It sounds E major to me. I think they mostly use ionian mode (E major scale), and mixolydian mode (equals to A major scale, or E major with b7 = d) when McLaughlin plays "f# e d e". But I'm not sure about those modes, I haven't studied jazz music enough, yet. I am just a selftaught guitar player...
