Jeff lost his sight to a form of cancer at the age of one. Healey received his first guitar from his uncle at the age of three and started playing with his unique lap-top style. Blues guitarist B.B. King has acknowledged his virtuoso technique when he and Healey played together at a 1986 Vancouver music festival. Stevie Ray Vaughn, who was also a close friend, said that Healey would revolutionize guitar playing. When they released the debut album the guitarist immediately developed a devoted following in blues-rock circles. Featuring the hit single "Angel Eyes," the record went platinum in the U.S. Healey's instrumental prowess is shocking. At an early age Jeff developed an unconventional lap-top technique (resting the guitar on it's special stand or in his lap, playing with his teeth, bending the whammy with his foot, or playing over or behind his head) that involves using all five fingers for fretting, hammering, and bending the strings of his Fender Stratocaster. This technique allows him use of his thumb for an extra stretch to hit unusual notes that most guitarists can not reach. Unconventional as this style can be his artistic genius still shines through. Jeff Healey has been collecting old jazz and swing recordings for over two decades. His library now consists of over 20,000 recordings dating from 1917 through 1942. |
