while stationed in korea I bought one of the most beautiful guitars I’ve ever seen. A sorta subduded black body, with a natural wood finished neck that went through it. All the metallic items (tuning pegs, cord insertion thing ect.) were all matching bronze. Well back to the point. On returning home I showed it to a friend who quickly offered to buy it. Foolishly I accepted, and now he want sell it back to me… I’ve looked all over the net trying to find something from the brand "phil" without any luck, I guess what I would like to know is does anyone know where to find these phil guitars, maybe somewhere I’ve over looked on the net.

      1. Phil Pro Strat
        Edge

        Hey folks!
I’m in Australia and enjoy ‘the hunt’ for vintage and interesting instruments. Enjoyed reading the posts re Phil Guitars and have to say the one I’ve got is a stunner. It is pretty equal to my Tele (2012US) and my Bullet (1983 Jap) which are fantastic guitars. I bought this on a whim and trying to get good info in them is like trying to find rocking horse manure! Seriously!
I paid peanuts for it, and after setting it up and cleaning the electrics it is great.
And I can’t seem to find another one in Australia anywhere, so I would have to place it in the extremely rare category.
        Cheers!

      9. Phil Guitars
        Tennessee

I own a Phil Pro I just bought from a music store I work with here in the Southern USA.
From all the store owner, (who has been in the used instrument business 23 years), and I could find, here’s the story we have on Phil Guitars.

Manufactured by Myung Sung Music Ltd, South Korea from about 1993 through at least 2002, may have dragged on until 2006, according to one store owner in the UK.
They made very wide selection of guitars, mostly knockoffs but with enough changes to keep them out of court. They had PRS, Jackson, Fender and other headstocks. Bodies tended toward elongated horn Strats, but thicker with harder edges. Most were either basswood or alder with maple caps, usually with a heavy trans tint finish. Some upper level models were neck-through, with multiple woods used. Actually very nice looking.
There is one catalog available at VintAxe.com, a 1998 catalog. You must pay VintAxe.com $10 US to see it in full size, but they will show you fairly good thumbnails, in which you can see the crazy variety of their guitars.
They built electrics, acoustics, and even did some mandolins. There may have been some others, like ukes. They also had acoustic basses.

They were known for fairly good quality, and sold fairly well in Korea, Australia, England and a few other countries, but there is almost nothing out there information-wise.
The killer for the company was their inability to ever get a USA distributor in their 10-12 year run. Without the US on their sales list, they were doomed.

They had two main lines, Phil, and Phil Pro. Within each of these lines were series, like the Max series, the Ardent series, etc. Within each of these series were at least 7-10 different guitars. They had model numbers that usually started with MSG, followed by some number. The serial numbers, usually on the neck plate, nobody knows how to translate them. Just a bunch of numbers.
Their 1998 catalog is 12 pages long, and probably holds more than 50-60 different guitars.

Mine is a Phil Pro, with a Wilkinson style floating tremolo, and an HSH pickup setup, which are very much overwound and very hot. One Vol, one Tone, five way switch. Alder body, Flame maple cap, cherry red trans tint finish, 24 fret rosewood fretboard, medium jumbo frets, main neck is maple with Phil branded tuners, (look like Golden Eagle, but who knows), and instead of string trees used the bar system on the headstock. The dot inlays are on the side, Ibanez style. The logo is inlaid in white on a black headstock.

The guitar neck is ruler straight, and the action is very low. It plays very well, and the tremolo floats nicely, and keeps tune. Overall, a great guitar but not worth much since no one knows about them. I suspect mine was brought back from maybe Korea by a US Serviceman or woman. I paid $100 US for it, but it plays better than my Epi, and my Strat. It is also hotter and the sustain surprises you.

That is about all I know. I continue to hunt them, but looking on all major ebay platforms, (Japan, Korea, UK, Australia, USA), I have never found one for sale. Same with Reverb.com. Nothing to find. If they made that many, with that big a catalog, you would think a few would pop up more often. For me, just that one that hung in that music store for about a year until I stumbled onto it and bought it, put new strings on it, polished it up and started playing it. I did a little setup work on it, but not much. Nothing any decent guitarist or luthier would have problems with.

My husband just bought me a Montaya accoustic guitar model # W15, at a junk shop for $30.00 including a hard case. I am trying to find out information on it and saw the comment by roger with the same model #, could it be the same guitar? there was an airplane baggage ticket on the case with the name of Nickolas Rosseter on it. I am just wondering how much it might be worth, especially since we payed so little for it.

        1. Montoya / Montaya - Tomato / tomata
          Anonymous

In 1981 I had a montaya acoustic guitar. It was actually rented for me as a nice gesture since mine had been lost due to a dramatic breakup. Those were the days. I kept it long enough that I worked out a deal to buy it from the rental guy in New Philadelphia or Dover Ohio. The guitar as I recall fits the description as a not so expensive knock off. It had abalone inlay around the hole and I can’t remember if it was on the frets or not. The guitar was very nice looking but the strings were too high off the fret board. It had a nice sound for playing to a few friends. It had steel strings.
I eventually carried it around once too often. The sun and the tension on the strings caused the neck to crack while in the back of my car.
It ended up as a trade in for a Sigma guitar in Nazareth Pa. around May of 1982.
I have not seen one since. I still have the Sigma along with a few others.

Was a survivor of the 70’s lawsuites of Fender, Gibson and Gretch guitar companies ended in the 90’s. Had very good sales on their dread naughts which do mimic both Fender and Gibson the most. Hand sprayed finishes and pretty nice action necks. they were sold by small shops and large retailers on “specials” around 1990 they were a $49.99 starters and even give aways for $20 with a regular guitar the shops were advertising. they have a 12.5 ” Tenor Bout and a 15 ” bass Bout. Stationary bridges — some with ajustible Saddle screws. saddles and Nut were made of a platic or synthetic and held up reasonably well.A quick upgrade is good strings –Nickel wound Martin’s and switch out Nut and Saddles with bone.. thats about it…Play and be happy…tommy

I bought my Montaya SJ-971 some 25 years ago from a very good friend. I paid only $60 dollars for it, but wouldn’t sell it for a million, it has meant that much to me. It is kind of rough; it has had a 1/4 inch hole near the bridge since long before I bought it and my nephew broke the head off, which I repaired more than 17 years ago… It still plays beautifully. The only things I might change are the tuning machines and the plastic nut. I have no idea when or where this model was made, there is no indication on the label inside.I would like to know about its history like others on this string.

              Phil

I got a Montaya F-15 for xmas in 1983. My parents owned a music store at that time and I recall clearly that this was a $75 guitar at that time. Mine has been through lots, the finish cracked within the first 5 years I had it and it looks pretty rough now, but I will never get rid of this guitar.

Hey I just had mine fixed up, I had to have it reglued and had to get some things fixed on it. But this guitar still plays like a dream.

I bought a Montaya guitar at a garage sale several years ago. Here is my opinion on it.

I have never been disappointed with the tone or action (playabilty) at all. I have compared it to many acoustic guitars, and found it to be just as robust, and even clearer when I attempt play the higher notes/chords.

If you are ready to sell, let me know, I might be interested.

            [email protected]

I did do one thing however, I put on a set of Ping tuning machines, which I feel was much worth it.

The real bottom line is, "How do you feel when you play it, because every guitar has a life of it’s own is looking just as hard who’s for the right owner.

Get to know it, if you don’t like what it brings to your session, then get rid of it. I’m ready to buy.

            Richard

I traded an Ovation I had for a circa 1974 model W-15. It seems to be an exact copy of the 1970s Martin D-18s. It had a sticker inside that said made by Hyosung Corp., and was all solid wood. I’ve worked on it extensively, for many years, scallopping the braces, planing dow the neck, and putting a JLD Bridge Doctor in it, and it sounds and plays better than most Martin D-18s of the same vintage I’ve seen. The Koreans are great wood workers, and make good instruments. I’ll never part with this one — it’s a narrow neck for me, as i play fingerstyle, but I love its sweet, warm tone.

            Carol Foote-Bley

: Hello, well, I have read the questions and comments about Montaya model 145 guitars, and I have one that was bought new by a friend of mine in 1983 or 84, at a music shop in Geneseo, New York. I never was too curious about its history, but for a $100.00 guitar with a (cheap) case included, it has played beautiful, and many people who have played expensive guitars have remarked about the fine tone that my guitar has. About 5 years ago, the neck started to separate from the body, and I had it reglued. So recently I started to try to find more about its origins and history. If anyone else has found out more about its manufacturer, etc. please send me an email.

            Thanks,

            Carol

I just did a search and found this message board.
My husband is ready to throw out our unstringed Montaya Acoustic Guitar made in Korea , Model # 145
I wouldn’t let him , as my Uncle played this for years and it has been past down to my sister and my son. My son just bought a new Guitar. If anyone caould provide information on this Guitar, it would be greatly appreciated. I figure if my 77 year old uncle played it, It has to be at least 40-50 years old. I’d like to know a bit about it, for no other reason than it’s a family gem. Great sounding Acoustic.
        Thank you,

I just bought one of these guitars at a used pawnshop in Costa Rica. I paid $30 for it. The body looks like a Willie Nelson guitar. I tightened up the keys and put a new set of elixir strings on. Boy, does this guitar sing. I need to bring it to the United States and get it worked on. I would like to know some history on it. If anybody knows anything, I would appreciate your comments.

          Chad

I could not believe this guitar! Guy had bought it brand new in 79. Montaya F15. It looks like a brand new guitar. Its beautiful. I had a raised eyebrow looking at headstock branding and the label. But when i played it i was amazed. Im 30yo, been playing for 15 years, had, held and played great instruments over the years. Never have I come across a vintage korean knockoff that puts so many to shame. The top is exquisite. Aged very well, light as a feather. The guy said he always kept it in the case over the years, kept it in tune all the time, kept it clean. Did a set up on it a yesterday morning and sold it to me for 80 bucks. He was sad to see it go and sad theres no demand for them. Based on age, sound, care and playability this guitar is worth atleast 500$+ to me. Not even exagerating. Its better than low level Martins in that$range, and way better than some high end taylors and fenders. If you find one, in good shape, pick it up.

I bought mine new from a small music store on Broadway just east of the Vanderbilt campus in Nashville in 1981 for $100 (back when minimum wage was $3.50/hr 🙂 ). Several people have commented on its great sound and have tried to buy it from me, but I always held on to it hoping I would learn to play. Finally started this year…..34 years later.

I too have a montaya guitar, I beleave its a late 1970’s law suit era stratocaster. I would also like to know a little more about my guitar. I thought it was japanese. when it was given to me 27 years ago it was in rough shape. 1 pick up 2 pots and the input jack was all that was left of the electronics, the neck needed some work and the tremolo bridge was bad. 48th street custom guitars in NYC. repaired and set this up for me. new Semore Duncan pick-ups, new pots and switch in a new 9 hole pick plate. the body was a cleared hard wood body that would be painted black with an all maple neck. the body is an almost exact replica of my American srtat. size and shape. My montaya is a killer guitar. Im considering putting my guitar up flor auction, but have no idea of its resale value. does any one really know. please l

        10. Montaya FR42 accoustic guitar
          Anonymous

I bought a used Montaya FR42 accoustic guitar around 1981ish… I believe that I payed $65.00 for it from a music store, not a yard sale or flea market. I thought I would teach myself how to play but I wasn’t able to get very far, and I didn’t have money for lessons.

My musician boyfriend dragged it out of it’s case today (October, 2012) for a look-see and was surprised as to how well it played after being in the case for over a decade!! He says it’s plays better than his. (Not sure which of the 3 he has that he means, or if he means all three.)

Don’t want to sell it but was curious and from what I could find out online, it’s only worth about $60.00 to $100.00, though everyone that plays one raves about the sound that is comparable to a guitar worth 5 times as much. Since you won’t get much for it, unless you really need the money or have nobody that is interested in playing it, I’d hang onto it in case the value goes up once everyone realizes how well they play and they become in demand.

          Happy strumming!!!

          Hi,

I have a Montaya (Model No. F-29) Acoustic Guitar from the Hyosuns Corp. It’s about 40 + years old and in excellent condition. Can anyone tell me the value?

          Thanks

        12. Montaya Md# 145. 46 years old
          Jared Barker

My father gave me his guitar that he bought before he went into the Navy when he was 22. That was in 1977. He said he bought it from one his friends who had had it since he was 10 which would make the guitar to be 46 years old. It has the nicest sound I have ever heard come from an acoustic guitar. It has one ding on the bottom side at the edge where it was dropped and some of the tuning nuts have been pushed up but other than that it looks just fine.

I always put fresh coated strings on it every 3 months or so (probably cause i play too much) and I oil the neck every 6 months. I have never adjusted the bridge or the neck rod. Just left them in place since I got it.

As many of you, I don’t know a single thing about Montaya guitars. My father had never heard of the company either when he bought that guitar. Obviously, these guitars are one of a kind if you have one and should be cherished and kept in good condition.

Being 46 years old, the wood of the guitar has aged, shifted, curved, heated and cooled over and over again. It really brings out the softness of the wood which gives off an easier deeper tone to the guitar. No doubt Montaya guitars were known for their amazing sounding guitars.

If you are tired of having the old guitar around since no one can play it, it would be worth your while to find someone who would gladly except the guitar for a good price and not sell it on eBay for $100 or less. These guitars are priceless! I will always keep this guitar and eventually give it to someone who also respects it and wants to keep it tuned up as it ages and keeps on sounding better and better and better.

        13. Montoya Model: SJ-975
          FireBreather691

I recently bought a Montoya Model SJ-975 at a flea market in Hillsville Virginia for $40 dollars with shitty case and instructional dvd and booklet included. Excellent condition guitar, no dings at all, great finish and plastic still under the pick-guard! It plays very great and I also believe it resembles the D-45 Gibson. But, I also know nothing historically and cant find anything on the web about it either. Hoping to learn more along with you guys.

PS. Putting up pics in a few days if i can remember to take some and get back on.

          Dori Anderson

I’m curious as to where you found the galaxia- I used to own one. I bought mine new, from Riverton Music in Utah in 1980 and paid $800. It also had a spruce front, mother of pearl tree up the neck, and around the edges and sound hole as well as a 3 piece rosewood back. It was one of the few professional grade models they made, and had a lovely sound. Unfortunately, it was stolen 14 years ago. Even though I filed a police report and got descriptions out to all the pawn shops, I never found it. The thief did call a few pawn shops just before I got there, and they all quoted him a value of $100- cause they didn’t know any better.
It made me sick- I bought an Alverado which has a similiar sound but isn’t nearly as pretty for $1200- which was the current market value 14 years ago for my galaxia.
Treasure her- or let me know if you want to sell!

          Patricia

I just pulled out my Galaxia TS12 that my mom bought for me when I was about 11 or 12, circa 1984 or 85. I have now, 20-some years later decided to do it, to learn. I brought it in today to Guitar Center but they didn’t know anything about it. I got new tuning keys and strings, vinyl this time so it may be easier to learn then it was with the steel that cut my fingers. (Although I think they sounded better). $20 to fix up, and it seems like I have a very nice guitar, that I never appreciated until today. Rosewood back and sides is my guess. It was from a music store in Binghamton, NY, but details have been lost as memories fade. Anyway, would love to see some pics of others. -Pat

I have a Galaxia Atlas model# WJ722 that my father purchased from a convienant store in California during the 70’s. He says he remembers paying very little for it. Somewhere in the range of $20 to $40. It was my first guitar and i have a great deal of sentimental attachment to it. As for any information regarding the company, i have none. I have tried searching the internet but have had no luck. It is a beautiful guitar and has a very rich sound. It always gets compliments but no seems to know anything about the company. Due to it’s country of manufacturing, the price at which it was originally purchased, and the location at which they were being sold, i fear it has little monetary value. Any information would be appreciated.

          Dave

For anyone wanting to know more about their Galaxia guitar I have some more concrete information for you. I’ve got a Galaxia DN149 and its gorgeous. Got it off of craigslist for $100 and its one of my favorites now. Like most of you I googled Galaxia guitars and the only thing that shows up is all of us asking "What the hell is this thing?". While looking for my next guitar purchase I saw the label for a Terada guitar, and its the same exact label as my Galaxia. It says Terada instead of Galaxia and is in the same font with the same border around it. Its even aged the same color. Terada has been making guitars for a long time and are still in existence making hollow bodies for Gretsch. I haven’t figured out how to contact them yet but heres a link to a list of guitar makers. Halfway down the page is an entry for Terada with a pic of the label.

          http://www.jedistar.com/jedistar_vintage_guitar_dating_t1.htm

As far as price don’t expect to get much for your guitar. Things are only worth what people think they’re worth and nobody is going to know what a Galaxia is. Look up Terada and find out what other brands they made guitars for and you’ll see our Galaxias are in a high pedigree.

        mark v

I have a Galaxia DN-149. My dad bought it in Japan in 1968 while he was station in Yokosuka. This guitar has a very beautiful and exquisitly done Tree of Life inlay work on its neck, and a very beautiful letter “g” inlay work on the headstock adorned with intiricate designs. All inlay was with mother of pearl. This beautiful guitar was made in Japan.

The guitar has tightly grained spruce top, rosewood sides, and three-piece rosewood back (similar to Martin’s D-35.)
The sound this guitar projects is amazing. Lots of volume, yet well balanced. Great sustain! Strong bass and very clear trebles. I have yet to see a guitar that can surpass the sound of this guitar.

The binding is combination of mother of pearl and white material on the outside. The headstock is also bound. The rossette is mother of pearl.

The action has always been low. The neck has remained straight as an arrow. There was never a need to adjust the truss rod. Sometime in 2005. we replace both the nut and the saddle. And that was the only repair we had done for this 45 year old guitar. We have a collection of vintage guitars, Tama, Martin, a Santa Cruz, and Yairi.

Dad said he bought this Galaxia for $425 at the Navy PX store in Okinawa, during one of his short trips there. A lot o money during that time.

We have sold some of our collections, but this Galaxia will stay with our family forever. Dad said that only very, very few of this guitar had been made. This guitar is a few years older than me, but other than the darkening of the spruce top and the yellowing of the binding, it is in immaculate condition. I like the way it looks. You can readily tell it is a vintage, a very nice vintage,

I’m sure that you could go look in their shop and see what the retail value of the same make/model bass and amp sell for, and base your decision on that.

Do your parents still live here? Maybe they could check it out? I know what you mean about their site. Apparently a new one is in the works.

My only other comment is that outside of Ottawa (and even in Ottawa itself), the Intex brand name is not widely know, so even if you decide to sell at a fair market value, some people might see the price as too high since it’s a not know brand.

    1. Re: Checkmate Guitar Model G115
      JoySue

I purchased my G115 in the 1970’s, I got it at Kmart for about $80. I recently got the Esteban at Goodwill for $90 (had a coupon) and the Checkmate is worth more, sounds better and will probably outlast the 2009 Esteban. I wouldn’t sell my Checkmate for less than $120 and I would have to really need the $120 to part with it. I too, wish I could play better. Also just got a Casio CTK-900 (paid a needy friend $140) that I would sell long before the Checkmate Guitar.

        Tim

I learned to play on a Checkmate acoustic purchased by my father in approx 1974. When I turned 16 my parents purchased me a Martin which promted me to smash the Checkmate against a tree. What a piece of craap. All the time I thought I was retarded and couldn’t learn to play guitar. Now I am a professional studio musician with terrible memories of that infernal piece of crap.

I know it’s been a while, but I just saw this thread.. I have one myself, it was my aunt’s and she got it in 1958.. They were made by Teisco, in Japan, from the 50’s through the 70’s.. The G115 is a 3/4 size.. It’s a nice instrument, small body, and great tone… Value wise, it is worth probably around $50-100 depending on the condition.. I doubt you would get that though… that’s only the book value.. what you would get if you sold it, would be somewhere arounf 30-50.. sad but true… butthey are great little players. Check the bridge, they have a tendency to lift a little, nothing that can’t be fixed easily, and inexpensively…

      1. Re: Checkmate Guitar Model G115
        Jim Koontz

btw.. they were sold in all kinds of stores.. All over the world.. I have seen them in Denmark, Italy, Egypt, as well as many states in the USA.. The one my Aunt had was purchased from the F & R Lazarus store in Columbus Ohio.

Checkmate et-200 were made in 1969 by the Teisco company of Japan.
It is a keeper. Not so much for the value but for historical reasons. I have seen then being sold for as little as $80.00 USD.
I do not know what their value is for a collector but it is ,again, worth keeping.

These were beginner-grade instruments made in Japan in the 60s-70s and sold through Gibson Dept. Stores…no idea of the value, but I’d think fairly modest.

I have still today one of the first Checkmate E-120 guitars. It still gets played all of the time. It is number 120608 off the assembly line. So only 607 made before mine. Can’t remember they year I got it but would have been around 71. It has been alot of fun and keeps alot of memories.

        James Reynolds

I just purchased the checkmate model 115 fir 20 bucks from a homeless man that needed money for food…. I actually didn’t realize what I bought until I was on my bus to work…. I would have gladly given him more considering this was the first kind of guitar I started playing at the age of 10 in the 90s as a hand me down from family…. this is actually the same guitar that helped me build my love for music

      3. My First Guitar
        Gregorio

My first guitar was a Checkmate G115 purchased at KMart for $12 in 1974. I began playing it when I was five. The guitar lasted until 1995 when the bridge finally fell off. I didn’t repair it because I bought a handmade classical to replace it. I can’t imagine there are many left now.

      4. Checkmate Model G115
        Anonymous

My wife’s father passed away about 3 years ago. We went to WI for his memorial service and returned with a few of his things, one of which is a Checkmate Model G115. I was trying to research the guitar recently to decide if it is worth repairing the couple of minor things wrong with it. She claims it’s the only guitar her father played so I’m thinking it’s at least antique and carries value as well as sentimental value for my wife. My 2 oldest grandsons taught themselves on this guitar and the 6th string would not stay in tune. I want to learn so I can play with them but, I’m not paying what we paid for their new guitars when I have one. Is it worth a small investment to fix..

        1. Yes it is worth fixing.
          Bill

Yes it is worth fixing. Tuners can be had from e-bay for around $15 they are standard 35mm spacing. A new bone nut for about $10 really improves the sound. I have one and I like it just fine. I also have a checkmate G-135 Classical w/ Nylon strings. Love them both.

I also have a guitar in the same color that has a sticker on the back of the headstock that says Made in Korea. From my understanding, Emperadour guitars were distributed thru a dealer in Chicago Illinois. I have an Emperadour Electric, sounds great. It’s got dual humbuckers, Gibson style solid bridge and Les Paul style knobs. It’s all wood grain and the pickups match the color tone of the wood. I’ll take some photos and post them online. I’ll look next week at starting a website with as much info as I can glean about these guitars.

I’ve got an Emperador acoustic. I traded some archery gear for it a few years ago. The guy I got it from said his parents bought it for him when he turned 16, but he wasn’t interested in it, so he put it away for years till he traded it to me. It’s in great shape for an old guitar and sounds and plays surprisingly well. I would like to get more info on it.

:I also have an Emperador guitar and I live out in Australia. The guitar was produced around the late 1960’s in Japan. It is very similar to the Gibson – Hummingbird. Possibly a copycat? It was only in production for a short time. I believe the Emperador is very rare, but don’t know it’s true value. The Hummingbird guitar is worth a couple of thousand US dollars. Hopefully someone might start a Website for the Emperador one day so we can gauge how many still exist.

Mine’s a ST-977A. Bought it a a music store over 20 years age, paid about $135 for it then. Apparently, it’s a copy of a Martin D-45, because I saw a guy drooling over it (from 20 feet away) until I told him it wasn’t a real Martin. Sounds really good, though, and has held up through a lot of rough travel and extended storage in that time.

oops, new to site so misposted. Sorry. I just bought one of these today for $15.00 in PERFECT shape and I’m tickled. It’s a Martin knock off for sure, but appears all solid woods, no plywood. I put on a new set of Martin lights, and damned if the thing doesn’t sound good. Dropped the adjustible bridge to lowest level, capoed on 2cd fret, as always, and finger pick. Nope, it’s not a Martin, but I’m flat amazed at tone and playability. Way above early inexpensive Takamine’s and Yamahas. No other clues about it or maker. Frankly, the best super-bargain guitar I’ve come across in 30 years.
            Who would have suspected!

A bit late on this but I was researching my own SJ971. It’s been in the closet for the last 25 years. Hyostar is just about non existent on the web. The 971 appears to have been a copy of a Martin D16 or 18. I don’t know my Martins that well but looks more like the 18 to me. Hyostar guitars are knock offs of the classic Gibson dove; Hyostar was a Japanese company that was sued by Gibson in the 70’s. The Hyostars are the high quality copies.

I just got a beautiful hyostar copy of a 1941 martin D45 that is absolutely remarkable. It has all the abalone and the woods are equal (or better!) than the original. Brazilian rosewood sides and back and the back is bookended as well. the appointments are lush and the tone and playability equal to a martin in every way. But I don’t know anything about the History of this company. I would also like to know anything anybody can provide regarding Hyostar. The label is very aged and I can no longer read the model # but there is no doubt that it is a D45.

        Doug Everson

I recently picked up a Hyostar 919 in Punta Gorda Florida. From the research I did thought it would be a guitar that I could take out and around camping or from one of my homes to another and not worry about dinging up my Martin D 45. I was correct it has a very very high quality of sound , tune it and it stays tuned. It’s a great guitar and for a 160$ I got a tuner and a stand with it. Now I just have to finish my handmade wood case for my D 45 and I will be set ! I know zero about Gibsons but I think it sounds like a D 18 maybe stretch it to a D28??
Go ahead and pick one up and you shouldn’t over invest.

I was given an accoustic guitar by a friend of mine. I don’t know its value, if someone could help I would appreciate it. It is a 6-string accoustic manufactured by Seajong. I cannot seem to find it anywhere on the internet.

Yea I have a seajong acoustic… the paper inside is pretty misleading since it is written completely in asian except where is says something like "We make guitars for people who like guitars"… Its a decent enough guitar and playable but does not appear to have a truss rod… Mine is almost a kind of tobacco style sunburst and is a full size… My guess is just for the oddity value it might fetch 100 bucks here… But I don’t have any plans to sell it

No kidding – I have one, similarly given to me by a friend who made me promise never to sell it. The neck on mine is narrow, it’s real easy to hit multiple strings on it. There still doesn’t seem to be any info on the net about them other than this page that we’re posting to. If you hear any news about it, please let me know… very curious about it!

I have a "Global E90" electric guitar made in korea. I am unable to find any info on it. It has a sunburst design. Seems to be an older make. I would appreciate any info available.

      1. I was given and still have a Dana WF 2 model guitar -it was given to me and purchased from simpson sears at the time for xmas 1970 0r 71.

I have a Dana acoustic guitar made in Korea as well. It looks like it says its a model WB2. A loose sticker inside the body has the (serial?) # 05409. Perhaps that means its the ninth guitar of this type made in 1954? The guitar was supposedly owned by somone’s grandmother, so 1954 would be around the correct era?

My Dana has something written in pencil… Very hard to tell what it is, looks like 08?o8 or 03?58 I guess I need a stronger glass.

      1. I too have a vintage Dana Acoustic, probably made in 1970s and sold by Simpson Sears; it looks very much like my friends old Stella acoustic from the 1970s; probably both made in Korea, which over the centuries has been subservient to Japan

      2. DANA GUITAR WB2
        Just starting

I have just purchased a 3/4 size DANA guitar from a friend who bought it from someone else. It’s my daughters name so couldn’t pass it up LOL. Anyway, the serial # is BL4057 and it’s a model WB2. I’d be interested in how old this guitar is. Where would I find this out. It plays real nice!!

    1. I had a DeVille guitar a long time ago that I traded for a BC Rich Warlock, I tried to find out who made them but never did. Mine was a Ibanez RG copy with a vintage trem, it didn’t play very well but looked great with a nice metal flake blue paint job. IF you find out anything about DeVille guitars please email me [email protected]

      1. De Ville Guitars
        tjm

I picked up a De Ville Les Paul Custom copy at a car booty recently and it is well worth the £25 I paid for it.
It is heavy like a Les Paul and has a solid one piece body with a set neck. I have had a Les Paul Standard and still have a Les Paul Studio, and although this might not be up there, it is a great guitar for throwing around, especially with punk stuff.
It almost cries out to you to play the whole Pistols set from 1977! Don’t think I would sell it, unless somebody offered silly money, as these old guitars are worth more than the market value, they have real character.

      2. i have one

SE335 Gibson, nice look & sound, bad paint, only 2 week i have it, but lost a pice a paint on the fingerboard. too much cover u, wrong technology, & anyway i like it!

    1. Re: TRUMP Guitar
      Keith

I had two of them back in the early ’70s, a 6-string and a 12-string. I bought them at Walmart. They weren’t very good quality. The 6-string, the bridge started coming off; The 12-string developed a pronounced belly where the bridge was trying to pull off. I don’t believe either had a solid top. They had truss rods though, but the 6-sting was developing a pretty bad bow to it and I couldn’t seem to adjust the truss rod to take it out.

I don’t know anything about the manufacturer. I’m sure it was a Japanese or Korean import. I don’t think I paid $100 for either of them.

    1. Re: Frontline Guitars (Korean?)
      Martin

I purchased a pink tele-shaped Frontline 301 some years ago at Covent Garden Antiques Market in London. It has two uncovered humbuckers controlled by a 3-way switch and quite a fast maple neck with a pointy headstock. It was missing a nut and some pickup screws, but I bought it anyway (for £15) just to see if I could get it playing again as a practice guitar. I never imagined that once it was repaired it would become one of my favourite guitars and compare favourably even with vintage Gibsons I have owned. "Pinky" just rocks and proves that some cheaply constructed guitars of humble origins can somehow turn out to play and sound far better than the sum of their parts. If you can find one, buy it!!!

I’ve got a Frontline 301 it was the first guitar i ever got. It has a very distinctive sound and i loved it. Cause mine was so old and had had a few owners it was well on it’s way out but i took it totally apart and am between using it as basis of building my own guitar. It has an amazing shape and the neck is made of Maple wood. Originaly had three pick ups. one volume switch and two tones which give an interesting toggle switch action. I recommend buying one. Seems like this poor little guitar is lost in the nether world! My son was given one by his grandfather, and it has a slight crack at the base of the neck. We were wondering if it was worth sending it out to be repaired properly would be worth the cost. It is small, and the label inside reads… GLOBAL Musical Intruments Co.,LTD. Manufacturers of Sorento, Nola, Bolero, Sonata and Torina quality guitars. The wording is centered inside of a globe. Any clues to whether it is worth fixing?

Someone was cleaning out & giving stuff away- my Dad ended up with a 6 string acoustic -Global Musical Instrument Co. # 401 on the back. Reinforced neck – Excellent condition – old strings but can be replaced – Looked as if the metal string board at bottom had been added – but maybe not. Has a good tone & small like a spanish guitar – My first guitar was a ‘Sears Special’ – but it was normal size guitar – you know the one – strings 1/2 inch off neck….If you learned on one of those without lowering the bridge – you can play anything 🙂
This Global has the string keys attached pointing off the back of the neck – unusual.
From the posts – these were asian copies – & they were marketing eye openers from the us manufacturers who had not cornered the ‘everybody wants a guitar that works’ market.

I have the same one. Brand new, never used in its original plastic and box. At the top where you adjust the strings is the no. 401N. It was made in Korea.

This global guitar I have one. It does have the hummingbird pick guard like others. It is the same pickguard that gibson uses on models costing 2.3K. The guitar is well made and I have refinished mine. It is not a cheap guitar and plays real nice with exceptional tone. Don’t be fooled by the Global name as being a cheaply made instrument. In fact, the guitar is quite exceptional in all design elements. I play it constantly with a condensor mic plugged into acoustic amp and sounds quite well. Let me know if you wanna sell yours? I WOULD LOVE to own another 306SHH

:: So, I am the next proud 306 owner. I picked it up from a guy who found it on an attic somewhere. It was dirty, the nut was broken and the bridge saddle was just a piece of cheap plastic. It took me some time to clean it up and to put a new nut and saddle on it. The guitar sounds really fantastic. I haven’t touched my Yamaha CPX500 since then. Here are some pictures. http://www.acverweij.nl/globalhummingbird/

I own a Jumbo body acoustic guitar by Global. This baby I picked up on ebay, She originally had autographs from the past owners band members and friends. But besides that she is a genuine Vintage Western Beauty. I am in the process of restoring her. As Far as it goes She sounds GREAT! I wish there were more details of this company. I just hope its not like in those movies like Click, and it has powers…. yeah Im a dork. Just know it sounds good and I am recording with it. P.S. I had a dean Marley pick up installed in it. So even better!

I found the following info at a different webpage http://www.guitarnotes.com This is what it said:

"Hello and Welcome to Guitar Notes"

The Global guitars were acoustic and electric guitars that were cheaply made instruments that came from a variety of Asian sources that got imported to a USA importer located in Chicago, IL and the importer gave the guitars the Global name and chained them out to catalog companies like Mongomery Wards, Sears and ect. and chained out the guitars as low end budget priced instruments to discount retail outlets and music shops during the 60’s, the 70’s and some found from the early 80’s. The imports were 6 string and 12 string acoustic guitars and 6 string electric guitar copies of name brands not quality. It’s rare to find one in excellent condition that’s worth $50.
They may have good tone/sound/projection or they may not for such is subjective to every individual by knowledge and ear, feel and personal prefferrences !!!
I have not heard of Global 14 string sitar but I cant count them out for the Asian sources made copies of most every stringed instrument they could clone, even fiddles which that’s what China and Korea and Japan culture was about , detail and what they did was take an item and start making it until they got it to standards and better, so instruments massed produced retained or got better in quality and got made better than the USA for a while, and it really strained the USA instruments manufacturers, thus to compete with just as well or better built guitars than the USA , USA instrument manufacturers started having their instruments made overseas in Asia and importing the instruments back to the USA as made in USA, until such time as companies such as Fender USA and Gibson USA had to get with the quality control and mass marketing and in the long run the USA and the Japanese Gakki instrument companies or such as Ibaneze faired the best heading into the 70’s and 80’s and onwards. There’s no denying the Japan made guitars worthiness nor Mexico made guitars, within specific brands and models and year dates quality nor the same from Italian and some Latin countries as well as the many independent instrument makers around th world.
The major brands pushed on the markets do have to really keep hard at it to stay afloat because of all the instrument company competition of today both domestic and foreign or foreign made under liscense to domestic and as well as some other foreign name brand boutique companies that are putting just as good or better musical instruments out in the market places at very competitive pricings.
Mind you there are low end to high end and quality instruments in most all brands and models from early era to present day and on into the future !!!

If this guy knows what he is talking about then there isn’t much else to say.

Picked it up from a man’s garage sale, silly me not asking anything about it- didnt want to make a big deal since his price was so low and its in great condition. Anyone get any info, please share!

I have a mini guitar with the Global Musical Instrument CO LTD "manufacturers of sorento, nola…" and so on lavel inside body. It has a white plastic pick guard and a finish that is red on the edges fading into brown toward the center. The gold and black sticker on back of head is 4001. It looks like I am in the same boat as the rest of you. I have no idea what the history or value of my guitar is. I agree it does have a pleasant sound. Brandon,
I have a guitar that conforms very much to your description, except that it doesn’t feel like a "mini" to me (though I’m an absolute beginner): same number 4001, same coloring, same tag about steel reinforcement on the neck. I found it in my father’s garage in 1983, along with three lesson books dated fall, 1979. Trained as a violinist as a child, he was always a stickler for quality. I’d guess that he bought it while living in northern Connecticut at the end of the 1970’s. Being preoccupied with the harp for the past 25 years, I’ve only begun experimenting with the guitar as I’ve been contemplating trying to sell it to help with financial problems….but now I think I’d rather keep it and learn how to play it!

I Have an old amp. It is a combo (amp + speaker in one box). On the back, a label reads: ‘Global Musical Instrument Co., Elk Grove Village, Ill. 60007’ & ‘4080 Instrument Amplifier’. Take notice of "Co." and "Ltd". "Co." means an American business. "Ltd" is most likely to be the non-US business.

I have one of the same instruments you have described. It has the exact same labelling on the inside of the guitar, however, there is no number that I can find. I bought this guitar about 1980 for $55.00. I still play it every so often. I love this guitar because of its mellow sound. It is a bit beaten up because my oldest son, now 23 years old, used it to learn how to play and, being kids as they are, did not take care of it has he should have. It has dings on it that would be hard to repair. It has, however, retained its mellow sound. I just put new strings on it today. As far as quality of sound, this is one of the best buys I ever made. I have no idea what it is worth, but have no plans to sell it. I would still like to know what it is worth, just out of curiosity. I can’t find much about this company’s history. If you could help me out I would apprecieate it. Thanks!

My friend has a small electric guitar made by Global. It has one pickup and a cherry sunburst finish. It looks like crap and it’s a little worn, but it has a really nice tone that I like a lot. He said I could have it if I gave him thirty bucks because he doesn’t like it that much. I guess I’ll buy it from him because it sounds like it’s worth a lot of money with all this rarity crack going on and he’s selling it for el CHEEPO.

I was looking to buy a Global 5-string banjo on eBay and the gentleman that was selling it said in his description that "Global was bought out by Martin in 1970 and sold to Vega in 1972". He wasn’t absolutely positive about it, but that is what he believed. Hope that helps! 🙂

      1. I purchased a Model 401DN
        Anonymous

I purchased a Model 401DN Global Instruments, LTD Guitar yesterday for $8.00 at our local help center. Was wondering What the DN stood for and if this is a guitar which a beginner could learn on and which could be reasonably expected to have a decent tone quality.

      2. i have a guitar no clue what the name is it is by global no serial number a broken string do not know how to play i would like some help with knowing the name and if it may be rare

      3. "Global Musical Instument Company Co.", not LTD
        Arick

I recently stumbled upon one of these (as well as a few strat bodies, one neck and a Fender Frontman 15r) in the garbage. Both amps worked, but I couldn’t find any info on the “Global Solid State Amp 4070” except for one site that says it sold on ebay but won’t tell me how much it sold for without a credit card.

Same address as all the others, too old to figure out a price on it, but I fully intend on using the Fender amp so I want to sell it. I would like to believe that it’s worth more than $10. Does anyone have a reasonable price range on these amplifiers?

      4. GLOBAL JUMBO ACOUSTIC CHERRY BURST
        Rudy Martin

Hey all, just a quick late addition, I just purchased online, A GLOBAL JUMBO ACOUSTIC in cherry burst from the 60’s 70’s era and it looks awesome, should be here sometime this week. will post details when it arrives! it’s in about perfect condition and looks like a wayyyy higher quality instrument than other global guitars. solid maple all around it appears, j200 copy. visually, it looks really really great. I’ll post some pictures and details after I give her a full set up.

the asking price was a very high 799.00 but I talked him down to 240 with/out shipping.

In my experience, if you don’t know what it sounds like, this is usually too much to spend on an import guitar. but sometimes you just get a feeling.

good luck everyone in finding their #1 guitars out there!

a few facts (maybe the only one’s that anyone has) about Global Brand acoustic /electric guitars is this:

They were imported primarily from Korea and Japan from the late 20’s to the 80’s. there is little to no evidence that they were ever part of a s Gibson Lawsuit (beyond consumer reports generated by people selling them.. fishhy?) they were imported from many manufacturers in the east and some few were made in america. There is some talk that there were atleast TWO DIFFERENT GLOBAL BRANDS, I dont believe this to be true. lots of websites refute this and say that the different fonts on the head stocks are a result of different post-production-printing in CHICAGO and NEW YORK over the course of 60 years. (seems pretty reasonable)

Tone woods, tones, build quality, design techniques:

Seems to be a group of ambiguous designs. anything ranging from gibson aesthetics to hohner/framus copies, harmony- look alikes and even some martin copies. seem’s like they follow the styles of the different guitar eras.

from what I can tell, it looks like most were made of maple and plywoods, I found one on google images that appears to be mahogany and a few of the latest models that they produced with spruce tops with much lamination.

Quality of build is just as stratified, for instance, this guitar that I’ve probably spent too much on had a straight neck, two way truss rod, nice high quality fret work, solid maple all around (from what I can tell, stay tuned(hopefully it does(crazy parenthesis inception moment))), and unrealistically close gibson copying down to the trim work. the appearance looks much much closer to gibson j200’s that the well known “Ibanez lawsuit model”. real pearl inlays and each details conforming closely, hopefully it plays as well as it looks.

bridge is the “batwing/moustache style”, looks great, probably rosewood from the color. strange to see it with an adjustable bridge saddle, probably will remove and put in a bone saddle fat on it’s surface.

if I should find that it’s in a moderate price range in it’s quality, I’ll be installing a full active pick up system under the bridge.

hope this helps, I’ll post more details hen it arrives on friday.

        Good luck friends!

I just got as a gift from my mom a Global acoustic #4002 .. She has had it for years. I recently took up learning guitar. The neck is smaller and so is the body (just a bit anyways). She had it restrung and tuned. All I know is its in awesome condition and it sounds really nice. 70’s I would guess maybe earlier. Can’t really find a great deal of info yet on it

      5. Global Guitar
        Matt

I picked up a Global from a friend that was giving it away and it is in pretty rough shape. It obviously had a hummingbird pick guard, needs all new tuning system, and a lowered bridge. It has no name on the head, but inside the sound hole says “Global Musical Instruments Co. LTD.” It has no model number and is a sunburst color. It highly resembles a Gibson I have in shape and sound. Any ideas?

I have an old mandolin that I now nothing about except that it came from this company with the serial number of 3384. It is in rough shape. needs strings and a good body make over. Please contact me with any information on this mandolin. either at [email protected] or call 505 267 7539. Thanks for your time.

      7. Global Classical Guitar #106
        Mary Lou Martin

I have an old Global Guiitar I would like to sell and was reading these posts to learn more about them. However, none mentioned what I have. On the back of the neck it has Made In Korea and the number 106. It doesn’t have a hummingbird on the pick guard. It is just solid black plastic. The color is honey stained into a much darker brown edge and the back is the same. There are thin yellow circles and one black circle around the middle. I would love to know what it is worth.
        Thank you,
        Mary Lou

Is it me, or is that the second or third dumbest thing ever said here?

Meaning what? Some people learn to play on their SECOND guitar?

        What an astronomically ridiculous statement.

It’s possible that the first guitar was not taken seriously, got trashed, given away… without ever being learned to play. The second one was a charm… Just saying

      10. global 4001 acoustic guitar
        Becky

I have a global 4001 acoustic guitar that my husband has from when he was younger. Its missing a tuning peg on the top of the neck of the guitar. Im not sure what their called. sorry. Does anyone know where I can find replacement parts for this: I need strings also but I believe that we can use regular strings for it. Any help for this would be appreciated. Thankyou.

Click on the picture. This isn’t my actual guitar, but the only differences are : Mine doesn’t have a saddle, and the headstock on my Global is black instead of brown.

Here is a link to the Rogue acoustics I was talking about in my last post. I have the blue one, but the pictures don’t do it justice. Not long after I got mine, I bought a few to re-sell, and the others that I bought look pretty much like the pictures. The two that look the best are the blueburst and the walnut. Again, if you buy one, be ready to make some changes to it.

I think we have the same guitar. My girlfriend was given it as a gift from her father who has since passed and I am doing some restoration on it. I am curious if you have any information on it and if you could send me some more pics of it as it is the only one that we have been able to find that is similar to hers.

      12. Re: Decent replacement for smaller Global guitars
        Chad

I also have one of the Global acoustics with a hummingbird on the pickguard, and along with being my first guitar, it’s also the guitar I learned on. Anyway, after playing it for a few years, I noticed that the bridge was starting to pull away from the body. It also developed two sink spots in the soundboard, so in 2008, I finally decided to retire it.

Two years later, I got one of those Rogue beginner acoustic guitars from musician’s Friend for $35 (mine is blueburst), and I was very surprised to hear how close the tone was to my beloved Global. The only thing is, if you get one, be prepared for a few necessary upgrades. The factory fretboard is literally made out of plastic, and so is the bridge. There is a quick-fix for the bridge, though I don’t know how long it will extend the life of the bridge. I had a friend of mine make a metal plate for the back of the bridge, with holes drilled for the strings, so that the balls of the strings don’t cut into the bridge.

Anyway, for those of you that love the sound of the smaller Globals, this is one way to keep that sound after your Global gets too old to risk any more repairs. Then again, my Global may have sounded different that most, because I played it without a saddle. The story behind that is too long to go into, but the point is, this Rogue helped me keep the sound I was used to after playing my Global for eleven years, and I thought I would pass it along.

      13. Global Acoustic Guitar
        James Terry

I have an Global Acoustic Guitar. The label on the inside has no serial number only the number 2.

The body is in what I would call exceptional. Just a few wear spots on edges around the back.

The face is in exceptional shape too. The finish is dull some what I can’t tell if it’s just dirty. I have been afraid to try to clean it. It has six strings three steal and three plastic.

The neck is strait and all the frets are there. But there is one problem with the neck. The film of black plastic or what ever it is that goes on the neck between the frets.
For the most part has come lose and flecked off.

It has what I would call a Spanish style head on it and is in very good shape nothing loose or missing.

All in all the guitar play well and has a very nice sound to it.

If you can give me some info on it I would really appreciate it.

        Thank you.

      14. #4004 Global Musical Guitar
        Kelly

My next door neighbors, an elderly couple, just showed me a guitar that he says he’s had for 60 years or so. The label is the same as the ones mentioned previously. On the back it has a sticker saying “made in Korea” and a #4004. They are cleaning out the place and wonder if the guitar has any value. The body and strings are in excellent shape, and the plastic trim on the front has one tiny corner missing. It has a very bright tone, and appears to have been well kept. Any info? Anybody?
