I have a Les paul copy as well , I’m not sure of th age on it but it does seem to be a prety good guitart do you have any information on it or the company?? I’ve been looking for quite a while but allI seem to have found was this site and a nother one that like this where people were asking the same questions as over here,"who is global ??, when were these guitars made ect"

      1. Re: Global Les Paul ripoff
        Adam

I recently bought a global Les Paul Copy. From what I can gather, these guitars were sold in the sears catalog, I believe in the late 70’s. The guy I bought it from thought it was a Epiphone.

I have done some tune up on it, but it is still not perfect. It’s a beautiful guitar, but I don’t know about the sound. I may need to put replacement pickups in.

Does anybody know anything about Global? this appears to be a early to mid 70s probably would get sued today as it is a pretty good copy

      1. Global Les Paul copy
        Pokerface

I am a seasoned guitarist and have many guitars, Gibson, Fenders, Epiphones and many more (well over 30). I just got a Global Les Paul copy for $150 plus tax in an auction. Pleasantly surprised at the quality and playability! It weighs 8.8 lbs. The volume and tone pots were a bit scratchy, but with a bit of spray silicone they cleaned up pretty good. The pick-ups sound like P-90’s. Feels better than my Gibson and sounds as good. It has a paper sticker on the back of the neck joint that says E-70. Made in Korea. It is a keeper would not sell it for twice what I paid. It came in a tobacco burst finish and was missing a screw in the pick guard, an easy fix for 50 cents at the hardware store. When playing pinch style harmonics they seem to jump out pretty loud for ZZ Top style licks. This axe is nice!

      2. Global Les Paul Copy's
        Dave

I have read alot about global ls guitars. I have had one since 1977 and I love it and have had the wiring redone and changed out the pickups, it plays great alot of folks have said there junk put I disagree atleast with the one i have it looks just like a gibson and if I were to cover the headstock you would think is one as well. My was purchased out of a JC Penny’s catalog. I also own around 20 electric guitars..Gibsons,Wasburns,BC Rich,Peavey,Yamaha and so on. They Were Made in Japan and in the late 70’s were made to specs as the gibson LP with the same tappered headstock but by the 80’s they didn’t want sued so they changed the tapered of the headstock and did not have the same feel as a gibson. still looking for more info..they were sold in JC Penny and also by Sears all different models.

      3. Global Les Paul
        TEDD

I bought a tobacco burst Global Les Paul from a Sears catalog when I was a teenager in the seventies for $69.00. Didn’t know too much about guitars then but it was a beautiful thing to me. And my dad’s guitar player friends with real Gibsons loved it. Someone else must have loved it too because they broke into our house and stole it. Always wanted to find another. No luck yet.

: Anyone have any info on an Alvarez Model 5011 guitar? Hey there, I also have an Alvarez model 5011 guitar, but mine was made on Nov. 16, 1977. The guitar you’re asking about is an Alvarez – they made them unitl like 1980 or 1981. I am currently trying to find a small set screw for one of my tuning pegs ( the guy at the local music store lost one of mine). If anyone has a lead, or moreover, has one, please email me! i own an alvarez 5011, it must be at least 25 years old
it is a nylon string classical guitar, made in japan. one of the best sounding guitars ive ever owned, great volume ,rosewood back and sides, spruce or ceder top, great guitar……be aware, if it is a classical guitar designed for lower tension nylon strings and has had steel strings put on it, the neck and tail peice can be seriously warped or ruined…. steel string guitars have a " truss " rod
a steel post that runs the whole neck of the guitar. you will be able to tell, if it has a plastic cover in between the strings on the head stock……… ilove mine and have also been searching for history

Very interesting. I too have a CARERA R-SERIES bass that is my first bass. No other info is offered on teh bass other then "Carerea R-Series Electeric Guitars". Mine looks more like a fender knock-off then an Ibanez (as stated by the other poster), although the neck is nice and thin like an Ibanez. No visible trus rod; which is intereting. Are we perhaps the only folks with one of these things? Any chance I picked up one of you guys hand-me downs?

I will post a follow up if I come across any info. Please do the same.

: I am also the owner of a carera bass, and ill tell you now, go buy a peavey, due to there short necks and poor body design, most careras arent good for starting out on, all they are is a wannabe Ibanez, there are a few good 1s tho. if you run across 1 dont play anything wit it exept for metal, and flat-wound strings work the best for them since there necks are short, it gives em that mellow tone, if you have a brighter tone from something such as a d’addarios bright round wound or somthin the sounds gonna turn out nasty, oh yea i might as well tell you now, dont bring it in to a guitar shop you like to go to just sell it back to another pawn if u wanna sell it, but once you buy ur new bass, something highter qual. such as a gibson or ibanez, keep it for when u play slap, the small "closed in" frets help stregthen your fingers, if you have any questions just email me back, im not saying u have a bad bass im just saying its not extremely universal as far a playing goes, but please mail me back

      1. Carera Jazz bass, model JBC-32
        Bluesman75

I own a Carera Jazz bass, model JBC-32, made in Korea, probably mid 1980s.
The scale length is 34″, I.e., long scale.
The nut width is approx. 1-7/16″.
The string height is low, approx. 3/32″ at the 12th fret. The frets show some wear, nevertheless there’s approx. 85% remaining.
My Carera is an excellent knock off of a 1970s Fender Jazz bass.
It’s a player grade instrument with lots of dings, scratches, and scuffs, especially on body.
The body is probably Alder. The neck probably maple. The fret board is rosewood.
My Carera plays fast, buzz free, accurately intonates, and the pickups sound awesome! Currently strung with round wound mediums.
I think my Carera Jazz bass could go head to head with any Fender, any year.

Old Kraftsman Guitars were the "house" guitar of the Speigel catalog company. They produced acoustics, thinlines, acoustic electrics and solid bodies. They were made in Chicago between the 1930s and 1960s mostly by Kay and Gibson. Good luck, Cool Guitar.

Play it before you buy it and don’t pay much – but you maybe lucky and get an ok one

: saw a nice guitar in thrift store. 6 string steel acoustic. only identifying mark was a stylized "K" on the neck and a label that said "model k410, made in Korea"
: any one know the maker? the stylized k looks kind of like a seagull with a line through it. it could have been model k415 or k416, my memory of it isn’t that clear. i can’t find anything about it on the web. thanks
it also has 2 seagulls on the brown plastic pickguard and that k on the head of the neck could be an A turned 90 degrees counter-clockwise. it’s just a stick on label.

i have no idea of the maker, i got it off a friend who had it lieing around. Its got a nice bright sound, and i liked learning on it, but its no forgotten classic! its a cheapo guitar, and ive decorated mine thorughly, only the "K" remains. hope this helps 😉

This is probably an old thread, but as I
Have read above we all have the same problem.
We all own a Jaguar or two in my case.Similar
Issues. I was unable to sweep the net for any info.
They were Korean made and knock -offs of
The fender strat style / Tele style. I too
Have had neck issues and Trem issues. They were
A run of guitars from as far back as 87 till maybe
1990 or shortly after. I am considering buying an acoustic
Electric model yet Iam holding off because
Don’t know what they sound like or if they are
Well built. I’ve owned the electric guitars for
A few years and I love how the play
And sound. Just not too sure about an acoustic.
        Anyone own an acoustic jaguar?
That can give me some input or insight?

I bought a Trump jazz guitar for $80 a couple of days ago at a Goodwill store here in Colorado Springs. I can’t tell anything externally about its model number, just that it was made in Japan. It seems fairly old (at least ’60’s)from the style of knobs and pickups, etc. If I find out any more about Trump guitars I will email you again. The one I bought seems to be medium-low quality, but I will check around with more people. It plays fine by me. If it were in more perfect condition I would think it would be valuable just from being rare.

I bought a wesley as my first guitar. So i don’t know a lot about guitars, but I can say build quality is good, it’s nice and solid feeling.\n\nIf you doubt these guitars, check out the ebayer’s feedback. Over 1500 feedback and ALL positive. Not even a neutral, let alone a negative. So I’d say that’s a pretty good indication of what these guitars are like.

I’ve just bought a seven string Wesley electric on ebay. I had never heard of these instruments before and have been unable to find any other info (which is why I’m on this website). I ‘ve been playing guitar for about 30 years and own 4 other instruments including a Strat and an Ibanez semi. I wanted a seven string but did’nt want to pay too much. I got the Wesley for £150 on Ebay and have had it for about 3 weeks nowand I have to say that I am absolutely delighted with it. It plays beautifully. I plan to change the pickups but apart from that I can’t fault it and plan to take it out on a gig sometime soon : Can anyone who professes to know a lot about guitars post a comment. These guitars look great for first-timers..are they really great, or just OK?

I have just recent bought a Jazz bass opy and have to say for £99 it is a stunner. The strings were a bit on the light side for my tastes but the finish is excellent (three colour sunburst) and I will be giving it a go at a gig in the next few weeks. Sounds good but for £99 it sounds brilliant. May replace the pickups sometime. Will probably replace the bridge sometime too, but i would if i had a fender!. Great.

You say it’s the sweetest sounding guitar you’ve played… no disrespect at all, but have you ever played a really nice guitar?
I ask because I haven’t, and so I wouldn’t really know what I was looking (listening?) for. I can see on ebay that they LOOK fantastic, but don’t know if that’s enough. Mind you, I’ve played a couple of right pigs of guitars, and I guess if you’re saying it’s not like that then that’d be good enough.

Any comments from self-confessed guitar buffs would be a bonus!

    2. I got me a Wesley 5 string bass for xmas – very good guitar considering the price (£220) – has a nice walnut finish on it (it’s a print, not actual walnut, but it still looks nice).

Just a few gripes about mine though:
I’ve just (as in 30 mins ago) snapped the nut – was just happily playing on it and ‘pop’ and broke just under the B string.
As I said above, the finish is just a print, covered in some kind of laquer – and it’s started to come off (the laquer, not the print) – I’d advise people to consider re-laquering this model as the finish will be more durable, and last longer…it’ll also give it a nice shine (which it currently lacks, very dull, almost plastic looking).

Overall though it’s a sound bass…I’ve played many basses in the past (from Aria’s, to Fender’s, to Status) and I must say, this is the nicest bass I’ve ever played!

    4. Wesley AKA Prince
      Oli Lea

I bought one of these guitars from eBay (a metallic red M06 model) and was quite pleased with it. I was actually told (by John Rackman, the dealer you’re all talking about) that these guitars are made by a factory in Indonesia.

At the time I bought mine they were going under the name Prince, and only later did it become Wesley.

A word to the wise – when I bought mine it seems the factory were not putting in the grounding wire from the electronics to the trem system/bridge. So at first mine was very noisy, but I added the wire myself (which did involve drilling a hole) and now it’s fine.

I spoke to John about this and he agreed it was a problem, and that he was going to ask the factory to rectify this problem, so for all I know the current Wesley’s might be just fine.

          Dave Bell

          To the last guy,
I bought my Wesley semi on UK E bay for £185.00 from the Guitarmogul, I have been playing for 22 yrs and I have been looking for a decent semi for 2 years, I have tried gibsons , epiphones and thought they were crap, and then I took a chance on E bay and bid for this one, never thinking I would get it for less than £200.00, I am so pleased it plays fantastic, I thought my Ibanez that I have been gigging for 20 years was good, but this makes my playing so easy. If you fancy go for it, I would be very suprised if you are dissapointed.

        2. Re: Reply to Mike
          Neil

Hi, Im based in the UK too. I spoke to the guy who deals in them on EBAY . Apparently they are his ‘OWN’ brand which he sources from Korea. He is in the throws of deciding which models to import to the UK depending on popularity.
The specs are really good for the price- even though they look a little ‘Tanglewood’ esque. Check out the thinline 335 copy. It has the same pickups and bigsby copy I have on an Elliot Easton GRETSCH (Korean made) and believe me GRETSCH are a lot more expensive, even for the electromatic cheaper models.
If ANYONE of you knows a shop where they have seen one let me know-as im a little reluctant to bid for something Ive never tried in a UK shop first-
anyone have any thoughts or comments let me know before I write silly cheques out.!

            Mike Prosser

I got a Wesley M06 off ebay after a friend of mine got one. However, his was an ex review model and had been given a full setup – and it plays like a dream. I ordered myself one, and it is an absolute steal for the price, although the factory set-up is not brilliant (im putting it in for a proper one soon). Thoroughly recommended!

            1. Re: Wesley - pretty cool!
              Iain Duncan

I am the friend mike speaks of, and my model does indeed play perfectly. I have fitted a D-tuna (www.d-tuna.com) to it which is the most useful thing to come along in a long time (for a drop d junkie like myself anyway). However having to stabilise the bridge now means i can no longer pull the trem up – but who the hell cares, i love it and it was cheap.

Old Kraftsman electric guitars were built by Kay for Speigel and were sold through catalogs. According to Michael Wright of Vintage Guitars, some models were apparently made by Gibson.

The Old Kraftsman label was a house brand for the Spiegel mail-order catalog company. Like Sears and Roebucks’ Silvertones and Montgomery Ward’s Sherwoods, these guitars were manufactured by other companies and branded with Spiegel’s trade moniker. Spiegel purchased most of its stringed instruments from Chicago manufacturer Kay, and for a short time in the ’30s from the Gibson company. The date of purchase, the squared-off shoulders of the upper bout, the shape and location of the f-holes, and the peghead contour suggest that this very nice entry-level archtop was made by the Kay company. While these guitars are not highly collectible, many of them are good players’ instruments, and the street value ranges from $250 to $500.

And then I asked if anyone could provide any information on them. Well, you had already provided just what I was looking for; I simply didn’t look far enough before placing my message. Thanks again!

At one time I owned an Old Kraftsman 6-string guitar, Old Kraftsman mandolin, and I still own an Old Kraftsman acoustic/electric bass guitar. Not sure about age/history/value of any of these intruments. I have used the bass in the recording studio, and the engineer tried to trade me his brand new Peavey for it. NO DEAL. I love the mellow sound of the bass. Would love more information if anyone has any.

I also have an Old kraftsman acoustic with f-holes, blonde, has holes for knobs, as someone modified it for a pickup, I currently have a bridge piezo on it, and I had to make a pickguard for it. She plays well, sounds well, she projects with enough punch for bluegrass! I have taken her to Africa and Switzerland, as well as all over the American West. Some of the Ol’ Kraftsmans I have seen are just great! An underated classic of the 20th Century! I would love to figure out how old she is and whether or not she is by Kay or Gibson. Any help on this would be welcome.

        Arebee

I paid about $300 for the guitar in very good to excellent condition. I mention that because a lot of posts are concerned with the value of Old Craftsman guitars. So now to my question, does anyone know if I can lower the action on the neck? It’s about.50mm at the nut and about 3.25mm at the 19th fret. My Strat by comparison 2.00 mm along the whole length of the neck. Any ideas?

So I found and old Old Kraftsman six string acoustic. It’s clearly very old and has a serial number of 47..it has a scrolled head stock like a violin. I can’t seem to find any other pictures out there of any thing close to the same as this. I’m wondering if anyone can help me date it and tell me what it might be worth and if I should restore it leave it alone. I know sometimes these things can be worth more with all the original finish or lack there of and and the wear.

Hello,.I found a a guitar in an antique store. The best I can tell is it may be an Old Kraftsman L6437. I t was re- finished at some point in the past with a low grit paper and has Sanding marks but no original markings other than the number in the F-holes. The fret markers are trotoise she’ll dots it is blonde body, neck and fret board. Is there a way to tell for sure make, model, and year?

        Jeffrey Jones

Hello, The other day I purchased an acoustic “Old Kraftsman” archtop parlor guitar for $150.00. I know that these guitars were made by various, (Kay, Gibson), manufacturers for catalog companies like Sears & Robuck, Speigle, & Montgomery Ward from like 1930to about 1968. It is purely an acoustic/6-string, having 15-19 frets. The color is a very deep, rich mahogany brown. Inside the body, seen via the scrollwork, are the stamped numbers L2282 on the right side looking into the scrollwork, and N-3 on the left side looking into the scrollwork. The measurements are as follows: L= 43″/W=16″/ D=6″. Can anyone help me with the age or anything else having to do with this great guitar? I do not care about $worth because it is too nice to sell. Anything to do with its history would be greatly appreciated. Thanks~

          Jeremy McKemy

I just recently bought an Agile guitar from rondomusic.com cause I saw some of them up on ebay and I got curious. I bought the most expensive one on the website which was only $300 (it’s the 2800 DLX Les Paul model) and all I got to say is that this thing is awesome. Their definitely better than any attempt that Epiphone makes at doing a LP, and the only thing that would keep me from saying that their not as good as the Gibsons is that the Gibsons have some really nice humbuckers.

          1. Pickups are relative to what style you’re playing. For me (rock n roll style of playing), the alnico VII’s in the 2800 match my playing style perfectly and I wouldn’t want V’s or anything other than what I got or ceramic magnets.

The TW- 400 is a current model but may have been made in a different factory to the model you have. It retails in Ireland for €215 check out http://www.muzonet.com/tanglewood/
Look for the solid top TW 28st
Tanglewwod have amazing guitars at €100 less than other brands. The EQ models sound like an acoustic not the sound of the pickup when put into a PA , try one and you will see what i mean

I also have a Brazos accoustic… all wood, brass nut and bridge. Got it in upstate NY back around 84. It also came unglued a couple of times and needed a bunch of glue. It hasn’t got the sound of a Dreadnaught, though the body is pretty large… but the action on this axe is second to none! It plays as well as any of my electrics.

I bought a mahogany BA78 in Illinois pawn shop 15 years ago. Tobacco and brass!! Hit an open E chord and it’s been my #1 ever since. I have many Gibsons, a Taylor 510CE, Guilds and all kinds of other stuff, but the Brazos is still # 1. So last year I found another in maple. So I have a semi matched pair. Absolutely the tops of the Korean movement.

        3. Brazos guitars
          Maximus

I’ve had three and still have one
The first two were twins (electric),
But one had a beautiful dark tobacco
Sunburst, and the other was a blonde
They sounded great and played just as
good as they looked. I cannot remember
Why I got rid of them.
I also still have a classical thaRt I
Absolutely love, and that I play everyday
I might add that this is the first classical
I’ve ever owned and I just cannot get enough
          Of this guitar.
The funny thing is, my buddy has a music
store and about 20 years ago I offered to
buy this guitar from him, but he said that
He had already promised it to his wife.
Well she said that if she ever sold the guitar
That she would sell it to me. Well she did,
But she made me wait about 15 years.
But I love this guitar dearly and I play it
          Everyday.
I googled the name and serial # but nothing
          Came up.
I as well would appreciate any info on?

          i have a brazos SG-style electic that i adore.i bought it
at a pawn shop for 160 bucks.it came with a custom made
wooden case.ihave seen another guy on the net with a strat-
style electric.apparently they made a lot more acoustics.
there is a river and a county named brazos in texas so i
think you are right about them being made there, contact me.

I have a brazos acoustic also. I am not sure if it is worth a damn though, i found it in my sisters room today and its all dusty with old strings on it. I am going to sell it to my buddy just cause he hasn’t anything to play on and kind of needs a starter guitar. If anyone knows more about them that would be sweet. I don’t want to sell a guitar that i might regret selling!

I am doing some research on my Brazos mod #202. Pretty thin out there. I bought mine new in 1982 and have always considered it pretty mediocre. However, made in Japan with rosewood and spruce beats the knickers off anything you can get today made in China.

I also have a Brazos BA78 acoustic flattop. I have had it since the early 80’s. Bought it brand new from a music store in DeBary Fl. It has many hundreds of hours on it, been knocked around all this time (no case ever) and it still has virtually no scratches or damage. It plays as good as any instrument I have ever played. I really like it. But…….I can not find out anything about it.

      Tim Mercer

I recently got a Brazos guitars electric off of Ebay for cheap and did some serious web searching. Nothing. The underside of the tuners say "China" on them, and the guitar has that look to it, but all in all though, it’s a pretty cool cheapo guitar. Pickups suck, but that can be changed.

Post some info if you have any.

: I own a gorgeous Brazos 5-string banjo. It says "custom made" on it. 2 different colors of wood on the back of the fretboard, mother of pearl inlays all over, and an incredible sunburst finish on the back of the resonator. It is also quite heavy, a good indication of a quality banjo. I have been trying to find out about this maker for over 2 years with no luck whatsoever. If anyone has any info, please email me at [email protected]

I also have a Brazos "Custom Made" 5 string banjo that is absolutely beautiful with all gold trim and hardware. It is very heavy, the 10" tone ring is 11/16" thick and bound, the resonator is a gorgeous birds eye sunburst, etc. Quality wise, it is as nice as any Ome or Gibson I have seen up to about the $2500 range.

I bought mine at a pawn shop in Lander WY in 1994 and was told it was made in Japan. It amazes me that I have not been able to find out anything about who or where these great instruments were made. If anyone does find out more about them, please let me know or at least post a link.

        Thanks. Kim Kasdorf

I bought a Brazos in aa pawn shop in Illinois about 5 years ago. All solid wood acoustic with brass nut and bridge piece. It is the loudest acoustic I have ever heard and, next to my old Gibson J-50, is my favorite. It’s a real gem

    5. I have had a Brazos classical guitar since 1983. I believe that they were Japanese made. Mine has been an excellent guitar of the finest quality. I bought it in Odessa Texas, the retail price at the time was $1150.00 with a really nice case. Other than one more in the music store at the time, I have never seen or heard of another Brazos guitar.

my brazos acoustic has been a favorite for 20 years. sounds great, has brass bridge and nut. has been on a west coast tour with a dean markeley pickup in a rock ska band. started to come unglued in the 90’s. a little glue and a lot of rope pulled it back together. it’s got big frets, a great neck and a warm sound. bought in 1984, paid $200. one of my better investments

very good. I am not a professional musican but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

        Hi,
I’ve got one of the blond acoustics with the brass hardware. Like seemingly everyone I’ve ever heard of (which isn’t many), I also bought mine new at a pawn shop for around $200.00 about 13 years ago.
I’ve had a number of high-end acoustics since (they come and they go), but I will never part with my low-buck Brazos. It’s kept in my living room and I call it my "couch guitar". What a beautiful guitar with a great, bright sound!

              Ladyteacher

I would like to know something about the guitar I just bought used in a guitar store. I am a beginning student. It is a Tanglewood TW 500 Acoustic/Elec, Custom Handmade in Korea, It’s color is a Vanilla Cream Colored Pearl with inlaid abalone surrounding outside trim and also surrounding the center hole, and large Abalone T and an Abalone Design that are near the tuning twist/keys. It has an Ibanez B-Band Tuner & takes 2 different kinds of plugs, and seller/repair guy said it’s body is made with maple. I paid 350,000 KRW, roughly about $335.77 and it included a new gig bag. Did notice a small crack on the bottom of the guitar once I got it home, but the neck seems fine. He said it is a mid-range as opposed to a beginner level guitar, and it seems to have a nice tone. i have a tanglewood starfire gold in antique sunburst, which i am selling, it is in good condition, only ever having bedroom use. You could take the neck of it or just replace yours with this one, it does haowever need the jack input plastic plate replacing, but that is the only problem with the guitar.
It is about two years old, but has been replaced by an SG so i no longer can justify keeping it.

      Hi Mike

I have a Blue Santa Ana acoustic guitar which I bought in Newcastle around 8 years ago – it was only £179 and it is a great guitar. I have been a pro guitarist for several decades now and have a very nice collection of far more expensive guitars but my Santa Ana looks and sounds great and if I could find another one I would probably buy it. I can’t find anything about them either – I guess we both just got very lucky and are both members of a very small club 🙂 This is a video of me using my Santa Ana a month or so ago on Sky TV.

      all the best

      Malcolm (via moderator)

The Intex line can be purchased through me at as well as TCM and Baron and several other private label brands. Intex Music Distributors has several lines of instruments made to their specs by several mfg companies. In Ottawa, Intercontinental Music sells them locally through their retail outlet and I sell them Internationally, direct on the internet and through eBay as well as sell to other stores and dealers. In the guitar line, as a rule of thumb, the Baron line is primarily geared for students and ocassional players, Intex for the part-time professional player (full-time job but play in bands as a hobby and maybe some extra cash) and TCM for the professional.
      Hope this helps.

Intex guitars are available in Ottawa Ont Canada.
      Intercontinental Music
      610 Donald Street
      Ottawa, ON
      K1K 1L4
      Tel: 613-748-9891

They represent TCM and Baron products also.

      The website is here:

      http://www.intexmusic.ca/

Can’t say much about it. I was in the store, the guitars looked OK. The guy who owns the shop is very tight lipped and not very helpful with respect to the origins of these guitars. I asked him some questions that he didn’t answer and then he told me to "Have a Good day" so I left.

They have a lot of strat, fat strat, double fat strat copies. The prices are not cheap, some of the TCM guitars are listed over a $1100.00 CDN.
They had a 50% off sale when I was there, but even at $550.00 cdn, I can get a MIM Fender Strat.

Perhaps the TCS is a better guitar, but the Fender will hold it’s value better.

      2. Re: Intex Bass Guitar
        R. Davies.

Intex is a private label used by International Music, in Ottawa, Canada. Intex guitars and basses are built in Korean factories used by "several major brands", according to the owner of International Music, and then sold directly by International Music, with no intervening distributor.

I recently purchased an archtop, which is easy to identify, because the f-hole patterns on archtops are almost a like a signature. It seems to be highly customized version of an Epiphone archtop. It’s definitely an Epiphone Emperor top plate, without the Epiphone logo on the headstock, although the headstock shape is the same. It has silver fittings instead of gold, and many other differences as well. But the top-plate pattern is unquestionably an Epiphone pattern.

        I hope that helps.

        1. Re: Intex Bass Guitar
          adam

I just found this, the distributor is NOT International Music(land). It’s Intercontinental Music. International Musicland has never sold this brand. I used to work for them.

        2. Re: Intex Bass Guitar
          GothicShredder

Yeah, the store is Intercontinental Music… they used to be owned by different management, I assume, because their selection used to have a wider range of name-brand gear (they once carried a limited-edition Lita Ford guitar for a time). Now they have all no-name brand gear.

The store-owner isn’t much better; rather pushy and not very informative in terms of the actual quality of the instruments. I would rather pay a bit extra cash for a name-brand, and not have to worry about either the quality, or the "here today, gone tomorrow" nature of the franchise.

A friend of mine bought a Les Paul lookalike (no name on the headstock) for about 200$, which carries a 700$ pricetag stamp under the neck/body coupling joint. I wonder of the legality of these instruments!

          Hope this helps.

        Annonymous

I know this man. He is the rudest and obnoxious person I have ever met. I had no trouble with him because I played HIS game. He is both defensive and aggressive. I tried not to let that bother me, as I had ME in mind and not him. He is though flexible. If it makes sense to him, (and you never know) he can make you a good deal. Just take him for what he is, smile at him, do not get mad, that’s the worst thing you can do. He is an asshole, but keep it to yourself and remind yourself why you’re there!! You’re not going to change the man at his age…look at the products, examine them good, then make up your mind. Not everyone can afford Gibson, Martin, Godin, etc, etc. If you like the guitar for example, play it and then make up your own mind. Never ever forget to negotiate…if I can’t do some bargaining with someone, I don’t buy. I don’t like to pay the full price especially on a no name but barely know name. Remember, he’s making a huge profit, try and get some of that for yourself.

I’m one of those that he kicked out of his store. I spent about 30 min looking through his store trying to figure out what I was looking at (Never saw any names I knew) and when it didn’t look like I was a buyer he very rudely told me to get out thing never come back. It was the first and only time I will ever go there. That was probably 10 years ago…Big sale on then too.

      2. Intex and Intercontinental Music
        Joe

Here is the straight dope. Intercontinental Music in Ottawa is the only store on the planet that sells Intex. Why?
The owner (Who is an asshole, BTW) orders guitars direct from China by the truckload. He has the Chinese manufacturer mark one of his brands (Intex, Baron or TCM) on the guitar. He also gets amplifiers, drums, pianos, and all sorts of band instruments. Walk into the store, and you will not see a single recognizable brand. No Epiphone, Yamaha, Ibanez, etc, let alone Fender or Gibson. It’s all stuff that he orders with his own brand names. Amps with names like “SuperRock”. And it’s mostly crap.

The owner should be in a training video for customer service -for what NOT to do! He is not friendly, not helpful, and if you aren’t buying like, right now, he will tell you to get out.

So how does he stay in business? Huge discount tags like 40% off. People who don’t know about musical instruments think they lucked out at the sale. They don’t know that the 40% off tag is permanent and that the huge regular price would buy a professional level instrument in any other store. And they don’t know what a poor quality instrument is with no resale value. You see used Intex and Baron guitars for sale all the time here in Ottawa. Poor suckers.

I wanted to get more information about this guitar and so i went to a guitar shop in germany! the owner told me, it’s a 30 years old guitar and was made in korea! in the 70ties and 80ies it was a concurent(?) of ibanez and yamaha, but it was much more cheaper! They have done good work, i think! I played 2000 dollar guitars which don’t dound so lovely like my cheap and goldy arirang!

            —————————————-

I can’t read the link it’s in a foreign language German I think. Just looked up the item on EBAY but it’s gone now. I also have an Arirang guitar, and have been wondering about it. There are some unique things about this guitar. First of all, it is an acoustic, and VERY old. I bought it nearly 30 years ago and it was used then, don’t know how old. It is a beautiful Sunburst, finish is holding up well – only checks are the idiot marks I put on it as a teenager. The bridge is starting to separate from the body, but the bridge is screwed it, interesting – NO PROBLEM. The bridge cannot pull loose. I had to replace the saddle recently, took me a long time to find one. The saddle ALSO screws in. Tuners suck, but haven’t replaced just to keep it original. Plays well, action good, sounds good. It’s the first guitar I ever owned, and I’m going to keep it. Don’t see a S/N anywhere on it. But I truly belive that guitar is going to last forever. Somebody put together a ‘cheapie’ guitar that was better made than some Gibsons I’ve seen for $2000.

        donjon33123

so, my friend gave me a guitar he had sitting in his closet for maybe 10 years. it didn’t work so i took it and decided to try to fix i up. however, when trying to find out what kind of guitar it was i couldn’t. It’s almost impossible. cut there is a CLUE! The guitar has a wood finish, just a light stained. the neck looks descent but i can’t tell if its great or not. at the bottom of the neck on the back there’s a model number ‘S310SG’. of course i searched the model number and found the model is that of an epiphone/gibson but looking through every picture of this series of guitar from late 80’s to 2004 i couldnt find a match. It says in various descriptions of this style that “epiphone” is on the headstock, but there is no name anywhere, aside from the model number. the only thing i could think of is that someone slapped a model sticker on a no named guitar, but the sticker doesnt look at all like it’s ever been tampered with. If anyone wants to take a crack at this Mystery email me and i’ll send you pics of the guitar in question. i’ll probably forget about this thread and page as soon as i leave it. i look forward to getting some help,

: Hi. my name is John & I have an Emprador semi accoustic bass that I would like to find info about. I purchased it second hand about 33 years ago. It has a 3/4 length neck and a body that looks like a viola. If you know of anyone who can estimate its age or possibly find parts to estore it I would love to hear from you.

I have an AW-16 model Emperador that I know is at least 22 years old because my dad bought it around the time my sister was born. He thought he bought it new, my mom thought it was used. Is there a way I can find out what year it was manufactured in and how much it is worth. I definitely don’t want to sell; it has much sentimental value.
      Thanks,
      Angie

It is believed that the date of the Emperador AW-16 model was manufactured around the late 1970’s – Early 1980’s. It was made as a cost effcient duplicate of the Martin D-35. I hope this info. is helpful enough.

Hi, I saw your post in guitar site dated August 18 ,2003 re:- Emperador guitar . I picked up a 12 string Emperador in a Moncton pawn shop last year and I’M be been looking to information on it. The guitar has dings and dents but produces a sweet sound. The guitar had a tough life and I want to give it a second chance to shine so I I’ll fix the dents and dings, replace the tuners, adjust or replace the thrust rod, swap the nut and saddle for bone ones and clean up without going all out and scraping and sanding.I would appreciate any information you might have on the manufacturer and importer, along with anything you have found out .
        Thanks in advance !

Unfortanatly, me being only 19, and my dad and grandparents that would of known anything about it past away about 5 and 6 years back. If you know any thing else please let me know

        Howdy folks,

I have a gorgeous sounding (and looking) Emperador 12 string that was appraised 15 years ago as "a decent cheap guitar that is poorly made and will fall apart in a few years"

…I hope that guy likes barbecued crow…

Andy, I have a friend who is a guitar/bass/stringed instrument *animal* who, oddly enough, also has the last name Wiesenborn (although he may spell it differently). I’ll talk to him and see what info he may have.

        Cheers,

God, these guitars have no info whatsoever. Anyways, as far as I can gather, these guitars were foreign made in the late sixties. I can find no other data on them whatsoever. I have a 6 string from 1967 that still sounds amazing, not kidding! Any help would be appreciated

I purchased my Emperador 335 copy new in november 1969 in edmonton alberta for $275..this puts it in the same price range as a Fender Mustang etc. It was made in Japan and was considered an intemediate guitar. Mine has held up fine and is still used for live gigs on occaision..great sound! Rob

I bought an Emperador Strat from a pawn broker about 10 years ago for $125. I dont think they have come up very much in value but the Les Pauls seem to have a bit of a following. It was an OK cheap guitar with crappy electrics but I loved it and would buy another.

I have an Emperador 4 string bass guitar. The bass has no serial or model number. I’ve checked it over a million times, pulled it apart but to no avail. I purchased the guitar with an old GB 60 Lennard amplifier 2 years ago and was told the amp was 23 years old. The bass is sunburst yellow in the shape of an offeset hourglass with two chrome double pickups. The bridge and the rear pickup is covered by a chrome guard and a seperate guard bridges over the front pickup an strings. The pick guard has a timber finger rest screwed to the guitar under the pickups. one more thing, the body of the guitar has been made with two pieces of timber glued together and the body is solid and quite heavy. Any feedback of the company, age and value would be appreciated. The guitar has been in a hard case all its life and is in immmaculate condition. Thanks

Hallo you ! The Bass is made in Japan, Emperador was a great producer of electric-semi-accustis guitars.
The Bass is made i think from 1980-1982.
The Bass is a Copy of the Fender 1975 Jazz Bass.

                      G’day,
I’ve had a second hand Emperador Semi Acoustic Bass, with case, since about ’84. It’s big & heavy & tends to tip down from the weight of the neck if I don’t hold on between songs. It has a fairly high action that I should get around to dealing with as it goes out of tune up high. I’ve installed a brass nut, I can’t remember why – it was in the 80’s. The thing looks like a Gib 335 bass, nice sun/tobacco burst finish. It BOOOMS. A good rib cage rattler. Came with a thumb & a finger rest which I found amazing at the time, being a plectrum user.
I love the thing but can’t find out much info about it or the Coronet SG copy bass I started out on in ’74. Both were common brands in Australia in the 70’s.
When I play it at home, no matter the volume or amp, things around the house shake & rattle.
Does it have any value besides sentimentality? I don’t know.I use it as a back up though with a new set of flat wounds it sounds awesome again.
                      Cheers
                      ray

The company behind them was sued by Gibson after a few years, supposedly because the sound was too close to that of the kosher Gibsons. I have also heard that Gibson later bought and absorbed the company into Epiphone, but I can’t swear to the veracity of that one. One guy tells me that his Epiphone was inferior to his Emperador though, so maybe there is some truth to it. I’m told that Keith Richards preferred the Emperadors briefly, but that might be a myth too. At any rate, the Emperador is apparently as close a to a Gibson as you will get without shelling out five grand for the real deal. If only I could.

I have owned an Emperardor 335 copy for many years and it is ‘so so’. The action is very high and the sound is ok. I actually just bought an Emperador SG Copy over the weekend and it is very good. The pickups will need to be changed as they sound very’muddy’, but the action and build is very good. This would answer the above, as I have only ever seen Gibson copies from Emperador.

I was on my way to school and needed a guitar for my video I was making. I found this Emperador in a pile on junk wrapped up in an old trash bag. Its at least fifteen years old. Other than being out of tune and a little scratched up it sounds just as good as my J.B. player. I dont know how good it is to compare a Emperador and a J.B. player but still i was impressed at the tone for not having ever of heard of that particular name brand.

I got my emperador guitar given to me by my Nanna. She owns a caravan park and one of the guys who stayed there couldnt afford to pay so he left his guitar there as payment. I couldnt figure out what type of guitar it was because the writing was italisised and hard to understand.

                  Amy

I have an emperador guitar that was bought for me in about 1994. It says it was made in Korea. But mine is model AAW41. It’s still pretty nice looking, simple ( no pick up or any fancy designs). The action is a hefty pain and leaves for intense callouses. But everyone says it sounds good. Does anyone know where these guitars are about?

: : : I also have an Emperador. It’s a Les Paul copy made in Japan with Grover machineheads & mother of pearl inlay. This guitar plays beautifully & has such great sustain, it allows me to handle Santana numbers etc. I got mine at a pawnshop 15yrs ago & even then it seemed as old as the hills. I’ve been trying to find out about the company, when the guitar was made etc.but have got nowhere. Does anyone know anything about these guitars?

Hi All, I also have an Emperador bought 2nd hand. I was told it was made in Japan in 1974 and it looks like a 335 but with a rolling bridge similar to a Gretch. a bit a mongrel butnice to play and sounds ok as long as you can keep it in tune. My guitar teacher remembered them as being cheap and Japanese in the 70,s but they seem to have lasted. I am also interested in finding out more if anyone has any further information on these guitars.

: Steve, I also aquired a emperador but I didn’t even know where it was from. My dad had it since he was young so I know it’s pretty old, and his parents have traveled all over the world. Unfortanatly, me being only 19, and my dad and grandparents that would of known anything about it past away about 5 and 6 years back. If you know any thing else please let me know

Well finally someone has found some info on emperadors! Were made in Korea and basically the brand just copied styles of other guitars like gibson, so there is no emperador style really. I also heard they were sued by Gibson, i think on this site. I hope this helps.

          Charlie Crook

Hi my name is Charlie. I got an Emperador Les Paul Copy when I was 16 (I’m 36 now). My Mother bought it for me from
my sister’s boyfriend at the time for $90. We’ve got some history that guitar and I . I played it in my first punk band "the Festering Sores" . Once I smashed a cupboard in half with it in a fit of rage (it’s now slightly cracked around the binding as a result). I was playing an Ibanez blazer at the time my band "Planet Cake" did a film clip that got on the tele 3 times, but I used the Emperador for the clip which is now painted the colour of a Ford car (Everglades Green). I got a bone nut put in by one of Australia’s most respected Guitar Makers (Greg Fryer) and he said it was a really well made instrument. I’ts sitting under my bed at the moment but I’m going to bring it back to life soon, I love my Emperador

        Steve Richards

I have for sale an Emperador Acoustic Guitar (probably made in the early 1970’s), which I bought many years ago.
Model no* 1240. Korean made (based on the label inside).

The colour is a bright rosewood polish, with a black scratch guard.

It is in very good original condition, shiny, almost no marks, a slight crack in the bridge, but still very playable etc.
        Otherwise perfect.

        I live near Canberra (Australia).
What might a guitar like this be worth?
Send me an email if you would be interested in buying?

        Jerry

I just purchased this Emperador 12 string guitar from a pawn shop, the guitar caught my eye when I walked in and upon a very quick appraisal , bought the instrument and took it home. The guitar has Nick’s and scratches and the bridge appears to have been re- glued at some point, but once tuned, what a beautiful sound.I had bought it for my campfire guitar but it is now more like my go to guitar for every occasion. The action is very high so I will attempt to fix that with the truss rod; I hope that this can be the cure since the sound is super nice. I would like more info on the guitar so I will include my email,if anyone has info or if we can compare photos,I would appreciate this greatly.

Hi, I found this page about Emperador guitars and I want to add some information:

it looks like “Emperador” was a Private Label / Brand of guitars made in Japan since the early 1960’s.

Why? I recently found a Emperador guitar in France which is identical to the Kent 820
guitars made from around 1966 to around 1970 in Japan. To see the Kent 820 guitar,
        check this site: http://kent-820.webstarts.com/

“Emperador” is Spanish for “Emperor”. It looks like this Brand was marketed in Canada and Europe.

Here’s pictures of a Emperador identical to the Kent 820.

I bought my Emperador in a music store in Yankton, South Dakota, in 1969 while in grad school. It’s been a great guitar through many years. I still play it occasionally, and it still sounds great and has held together with no repair for forty-four years. J

        Hi…
I have a spanish Emperador guitar. On a bracing near the soundhole there is a number: 140. I don’t know if it’s the number of the model or if its a serial number. It was bought in 1968 in the Netherlands for 325 guilders, which was quite a handsome sum of money then. The top is laminate with a spruce toplayer; sides and back are solid Indian rosewood and the fingerboard looks rosewood too. The playability of the guitar is excellent and it has a great deep warm sound.
Last year I had the fingerboard and frets repaired by a luthier and i used a finish restorer on the lacquer: the guitar looks almost like new again. I play it every week and enjoy every time i play it.
        Kind regards,
        Henri

      10. Hey everyone, I ended up
        Peter

Hey everyone, I ended up here trying to find out more info on my Emperador (6 string acoustic in a dark tan to light red wood, made in Korea- model 1244) from googling. Anyway, just wanted to say I’ve got probably too many guitars and have higher end ones (3 Rickenbackers, 2 classic Fenders, a Casino and 2 beautiful Takamines as acoustics) but this bloody cheap old Emperador is my favourite and the one I sit and strum when just sitting in the backyard happily having a few drinks.

It’s wonderful, and I have no greater emotional attachment to it than I went to a local 2nd hand instrument store to buy a spare acoustic for when friends are over and want to jam and bought it because it was cheap, I loved the finish and it had a deep, deep sound. It’s been kicking on for over a decade with me, and god knows how long before that.

Anyway, just wanted to say it in case someone else ends up here because they like the guitar and want more info; so no extra info on them, but just a thumbs up from someone else that things they’re pretty decent pieces of kit.

No, but I own a Horugel mandolin. I understand the company is based in Inchon Korea. So far the only other references I have found have been for Pianos and seem to be marketed primarily in Europe. My own instrument was purchased new at Petosa’s Music in Seattle in 1976 for $40.

HI! I am just mending a strange old Horugel guitar! I don’t even know how it sounds, but when I found it constantly getting dust-covered in the flat of my bass-players house, I couldn’t help the need to make it shine again! I think mine was received for very little cash!!! It has a very small sunburst-finished body, which seems to be crafted of the cheapest available wood on earth!
Nevertheless I like it’s trashy retro-design and now, after I have put fresh strings on it, I like the dry sound very much! Even without being connected to any kind of amp, it produces an ethereal reverb aruond it! The pickups are plastic-trash, and the tremolo doesn’t work
without thoroughly detuning every string! Let’s see what my Fender Deluxe sucks out of that baby!!!<

Had one sitting around in the garage for years. I can’t find any other info on it other than the name and made by Sammick in Korea. Acoustic and I just put a set of strings on it. Never done that before. The bone bridge fell out when I took off the last old string and bust on the floor. Damn piece of plastic BS anyhow. Went in my wood-shop and made a half-assed substitute but loosing tune on the skinny strings as they sink into the softer wood. Not that I’m at all certain of the tune anyways. Closest I ever came to playing music was strumming a Jaw harp slightly off-stage at a Goose Creek Symphony concert in Stanley Park in Vancouver, BC in one of the first Easter BE-Ins.

Anyhoo, I digress. Have no idea if i strung it right, need a new bone bridge for sure and my strobiscopic tuning pick sure seems have a large range of tune so off I go into the great white north singing songs that at least keep the coyotes away. Not getting me laid much either.

I guess my next move is to fix the bridge and find someone local that can give a clue or two.

I’m guessing it was when rock and roll was booming and all the maunfactures of instruments wanted to get in on it so they converted to making guitars basses drums etc…. not really sure though…

I also have a horugel-samick guitar from 1976, it is in perfect condition, I don’t know the value of this guitar, maybe it’s an exeptional model, or maybe it’s a piece of junk , they say you can find everything on the web, but there’s absolutely no information about this guitar, it is really fustrating. If someone has some information about this guitar, mail me please…(the serial number of the guitar is SF155)

I have a Samcik Horugel SAZ50 or SFZ50, it’s old, and I can’t really read the label on the inside of the guitar. Got it at a garage sale for 5 bucks. It’s solid, and sounds pretty good, but needs some work. I want to know if it’s worth putting the work into it, or should I use it for firewood?
