Hi,
Just a wee bit of background about myself I am
29, and have been playing guitar/bass for 15 years .
Throughout the years I have had Gibsons, Fenders,
Rickies, Yamahas, Ibanez, Washburns etc… and was
generally very happy with what I had at that time. I
then discovered B.C. Rich guitars and was hooked.
They beat every competitor in every dep., build
quality, sound, variety of woods, pickups etc, support
was fantastic and so on. I then began to collect more
B.C. Rich’s and haven’t been disappointed with any of
them.

BCR has no records from #90224 to #94004 because they were Class Axe; this is from what the US Product Manager T Keyes told me.
OK i have what looks to be a USA mockingbird but the serial # starts with u0###, not the standard year than 3 digits. whats up with this.
These guitars are "USA Production" guitars, with bodies made in Japan, finished, and final assembly in USA. Great axes. Play and sound nice. Finish is a bit touchy, but normally are ready to rock.\n: OK i have what looks to be a USA mockingbird but the serial # starts with u0###, not the standard year than 3 digits. whats up with this.
The Japanese guitars’ serial numbers DO start with a letter, but none of them were a U. Wild stuff. Seen one for sale with a U labeled USA at a store in NYC. R headstock. \n: OK i have what looks to be a USA mockingbird but the serial # starts with u0###, not the standard year than 3 digits. whats up with this.

The very early imports from Japan had a letter followed by 4 digits for the SN. I am collecting these SNs & pics to help uncover the history of them – the records were lost in a flood. The Class Axe records are a different story all together – as company reversion to Mr Rico was a repo after a defaulted loan. Drop me a line & lets see what we can find – I’ll share what I can.

Can anyone finally shed some light on the origins of the LA Series ? There are 3 reviews listed on Harmony-Central and ALL are from Canada (so am I). What does LA stand for ? NJ is Nagoya, Japan. Is LA therefore Laos, Asia or Los Angeles or Louisville America ?I have a Warlock in great condition but this is bolt-on and does not have the Widow Headstock. Nice Floyd Style trem etc.\n\nThe only thing for certain is that these guitars are better than the NJ and Platinum series models.
From what i’ve come to understand is the La Series guitars are expensive imports and they are considered equal to the platnium series i own one my self best guitar i owned to date.

Hi Rockwood!
It has a bolt on Neck. Furthermore it has a reversed Headstock with only the Brand (BC Rich) on it, exept for the Bich an Nj Series on the Plate on the neck tuning part. I dont know what you mean with "sticker"?
Additional information: Colour is white, on the tuners are those little R logos and it has dot inlays on the fredboard…
Greetings

If anyone has any info on this..such as when exactly these were made, what kind of run they did, etc. The only info I could find was on vintageguitar.com. They said only 150 guitars were done in the first run with the BC Rico name on the headstock…all others after that had BC Rich on them because of the brand name troubles…is this accurate? PLEASE let me know..email me or post…thanks!

i also have one of these guitars. its a long story that goes back to my teens. i bought it for 100 bucks in or around 89′ at a music store. they had no info on it. told me it was a copy of the bc rich or something! anyway it was an off white and the fretboard was separating from the neck but it played great and sounded awesome. i later bought other guitars and didnt play the mockingbird as a main but it is still in my collection and i have always gone back to it and always find it to be inspiring and i still love its sound. i made the teenaged mistake of wishing it was black and so i took it into my school woodshop and took a DA sander to its back and ended up having a friend paint it later and he completed the sanding process as he was an automotive painter. first show in black i bounced it off the ball hitch on the trailer we were gigging on! it has taken other spills over the years off a stand and one night right off its strap to the ground between songs but it has taken it all and still to this day( even with the neck issue that i mentioned eaelier) it is still straight as an arrow and it plays and sounds awesome! i like you learned a couple of years ago that it was one of 200 or so guitars built by bernie rico himself and that the company ran into some legal issues with the name and changed thier name. i am not 100% on it but i believe i found that they were built in mexico and that some 200 or so pieces made it to the states. i still kick myself for painting the guitar and defacing its value. it seems to me that these are excellent rare guitars that need to be respected and that thier individual values are priceless and that to some collectors the right pieces might be quite valuable but i am uncertain as to how much so. even in its current condition i today, knowing what bit i do know would not sell mine for any less than 1000. hope this helps and would love to hear more and see pics, as i said they are rare!!!

:I also have one and can not find info anywhere. I’m searching for a schematic as the a toriod coil came loose inside the guitar and now the ‘color’ switch does not function. My serial # is 90127 – not close to yours. I bought mine in 1982 and still gig with it – I get comments on its "growl" all the time. I was told at the time I bought it (from a dealer) that it was assembled in Japan which is why it cost about 33% less than a Rich. At the time, I could not tell tghe difference it sound quality or action between my Rico and the Rich and that is why I still have it today….

I LOVE the tone that the Rico has….my husband put flat wound jazz strings on it and he tunes down to C…so he gets a really big huge growl…sounds amazing. I had another guys contact me who is also looking into the mystery of the Rico’s. I’ll let you know if I find out anything else 🙂 Thanks for responding!

I have a B. C. Rico Japanese crafted acoustic that I purchased in Toronto new in about 1980. It is in mint condition with pearl cloud inlays. I am just now searching for info about it.
Would appreciate hearing anything you may have discovered?
Don’t know if this helps or if you already know, but BC Rico acoustics are generally made in Japan, they were not made in America. However, they are still very fine quality guitars. I don’t know the model numbers, but I know Mr Neil Moser (BC Rich Granddaddy!) still plays his and rates it highly, also I’ve spotted tenacious D playing one in the ‘best song in the world’ video, and apparently live too….
Hope this helps.
I have all kinds of conflicting info or missleading info on the BC Rico series of guitars. I can’t even get a straight number of how many were made, but the only one I have seen in person is the BC Rico Mockingbird I have…it’s NOT and acoustic. Some eagle acoustics and electrics (from what I understand) also carry the BC Rico name. If ANYONE has info on these, pleawe post. I have had not luck and cannot find one in ANY book I ahve looked in. All th4e imports I ahve seem pix of, have the Rich logo NOT the actual Rico logo.
It was at about the time of the appearance of the Eagle in around ’76 that B.C. Rich first began importing guitars. Through a friend living in Tokyo, Rico arranged to have some copies of the Eagle made and imported carrying the B.C. Rico brand name. Bernie Rico chose this name so as to distinguish these imports from the guitars being made in the U.S. These were excellent copies with neck-through construction. Rico doesn’t recall exactly who made these guitars, but thinks it may have been the Kasuga factory, one of the primary Japanese suppliers of quality guitars at the time.
Unfortunately, the B.C. Ricos ran into legal problems right out of the gate. The Rico Reed company sued B.C. Rich over the use of the Rico brand name, and the first shipment of B.C. Rico guitars was impounded by customs awaiting a decision. Since Rico was Bernie’s last name, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that B.C. Rich would have the right to use the name, which it did. However, in the interim the decision was made to simply use the B.C. Rich name, which would henceforth be applied to all B.C. Rich guitars, regardless of where they were manufactured. (All imports carry an additional modifier such as N.J. Series or Platinum which idicate they are made offshore.)
As a result of the hassles over the name, these first B.C. Rico imports are quite rare; only about 150 or so were ever imported before the brand name was abandoned.

I’m an Ibanez S Series guitar player for several years, but looking to switch to a Rich. I ran upon a Bright, Canary Yellow BC Rich guitar hanging in a pawn shop. Guitar looks like an Ibanez, Charvel, Jackson, etc body style; actually looks made in the style of the 80’s Charvel and Jacksons. Headstock says "Made in USA" at the top above the tuners -near the point. Pickup is a single EMG humbucker mounted at 45 degree angle. Has only a volume knob. Neckplate says Hollywood, CA??? Did not take down serial #. Trem is double-locking, all black hardware and says BC Rich on trem, not Floyd. Is it collectable at all, or maybe even just a great player…They want $250 w/case…help before she walks. Can’t find comparable on ebay.
Sounds like a Gunslinger. Does it have a reverse headstock and a maple neck (Light colored)? If so, its a Gunslinger, and at $250, grab it. AS far as Gunslingers go, I have 4!

Its a BC Rich made by the Class Axe company here in the USA in the late 80’s. If it has a letter before the serial number it is made in Japan UNLESS the headsrtock says Made in the USA…….
Hi Joe!
All the B XXXX Rich’s were made during the Class Axe era? I have an NJ (not "Made in USA") B 17XX Warlock and was just wondering…
Also, I saw a B XXXX "Made in USA" ST at a local store the other day. I played it and something just wasn’t right. I had this strange feeling it was a Class Axe… 😉
Thanks!
rork
Not all Bxxxx were BOLTONs. I have a BCRico Neckthru Eagle Bass with SN B21xx. I do believe though that all NJs with a Bxxxx SN are BOLTONs ( you know – bolted on neck )
posted this at the bc rich forum and harmony central also:\n\ni saw at a pawn shop, an old NJ warlock with the hooked head, like in this pic ( http://bc-rich.com/images/bc-warlock-nj.jpg ), which i got from RONZ’s site, bc-rich.com). thing is tho, if i remember correctly, it had a fixed bridge. why the difference? is it a model year thing? i didn’t get the chance to pull it down and screw with it any, but it looked to be in pretty decent condition. i think they were asking $250 for it. i was thinking i’d go there after my birthday and try to talk them down some, since a new NJ can be bought for like $350 at guitar center down the road from there, and mod it like crazy. worth it? i currently have a usa bolt-on gunslinger (got it from the same pawn shop), a platinum ironbird, and a charvel cx390….how do you expect this would compare, if it’s in playable condition?\n\ni’m looking for something to either take over as my #1 downtuning guitar, or be a backup for my ironbird, which is my current downtuning guitar.

Ruber feet are stock
what kind of bridge knobs and truss cover does it have,
do the mini toggles have orange dots???
It has an early Kahler bridge, the style that is fully height adjustable front and rear. THe truss cover is a triangle with one screw at the top. I do not believe this is stock as the drilling is there for the kahler locking nut which is not present. I would like to know what kind of truss cover is supposed to be there, as the kahler lock will not cover the entire truss channel, or was it just left open that way originally.
I just picked up what I believe is an early Rich Bich Supreme. Serial on headstock is "80081." Unfortunately someone cut out the pre-amp so I need to find a replacement, but other than that it’s in mint condition. My question is.. Can someone verify the year 78??? and also.. there are little "feet" at the tips of the lower bouts where the guitar "stands" when you set it against an amp or whatever. Was this original? It looks factory, as the edges of the wood are slightly angled and the finish is NOT marred.
Thanks in advance.

I have what I think is a 1986 to 1988 BC Rich Bitch Bass. I Figure this because the first two numbers in the sereal number on the back of the headstock are 90. It is a neck through with Diamond inlay w/ rosewood fretboard. It is Birch and has passive dimarzio pickups with black covers.. Can not find actual Model in any of the popular publications as it has a gold Kahler bridge and gold grover heads. There are none listed with Gold hardware and most have black hardware. Original store hand tag says it was handmade in USA and retailed for $1899. It is in almost new condition as it was never realy used in any club work. I bought as a collector. Any ideas out ther ? I am ready to sell my collection and having a hard time pricing this one. It is a great bass though not realy my style.

Hi,\n\nI have an NJ Series Mockingbird and am trying to find out how much it is worth. I have no idea how old it is but the serial no. says B5351 and "NJ series" is printed in gold on the pointed (6 in a line) headstock…. It also has a Kahler trem so i reckon it must be quite a few years old….\n\nAny help would be greatly appreciated!

DUDE,
that has got to be the longest SN for any BCR I’ve ever heard of. Are you sure your keyboard keys aren’t sticking?!
I’ve owned this guitar from new (’84), It is a mahogany bolt on neck, bright yellow in colour, Anybody have any idea of current value? Or the availability of spares ? i.e. bridge, pickups etc.
From new in 84? You could help pin down some info by sharing your SN and bout when it was bought in 84! Is it a Neckthru or bolton? So far as parts are concerned, it really is a hunt n peck ordeal:( I found top hat USA knobs on EBay last week – better than NJs & the real deal! What are you looking for?
Serial number is 868949 bolt on neck….i need a bridge, bridge posts, and string intonation adjusters… oh a screw for the bolt on neck… and a jack plug surround .. rest is relatively ok..
