Melody Guitars was a manufacturer in Sweden that closed in the late 80’s. Their products were also marketed as "Sounds of Sweden".

I believe your guitar is a Kalamazoo KG1. I think Gibson made this guitar in response to Fender’s strat… It’s got the SG look with a Fender-like headstock, single-coil (I believe).

Help! I bought a Japaneese SG style guitar that I like quite a bit. It was in very rough shape and I have been restoring it. It has a bolt on neck with a inline 6 tuner config. Headstock is shaped like Fender. It is SG shaped except the horns are equal in size. It has two bulky single coil pickups that are all chrome with the screws running down one side of the pickup, almost like the gibson deluxe les paul mini humbucking pickups look. The interesting thing is that the pick guard is a two piece metal (Chrome) and the plate on the back that covers the electronics is chrome also. It only has Made in Japan on the neck plate and a small plate on the back of the headstock that has a serial number on it. The truss rod cover is sloped and quite big and is chrome also. The guitar was white or a cream colored. This guitar looks to be an early 60’s from looking at the paint and style hardware. It has a vintage whammy that I have seen on older Hagstrom guitars. I have seen Domino guitars with the same kind of headstock with the chrome truss rod cover. I have also seen Domino guitars with chrome pickguard also. But none of their guitars are styled like this one. If any one has any info. PLEASE email me. I have searching the internet for months and can’t find anything that even resembles this. Thanks Rob Jones

In 1986 as a sophomore in high school, my father bought me a Kawai electric guitar. I want to know if anyone has any info on it? It is "strat" style body, black with a black neck and rosewod fret board. There was a similar guitar at the store back then for a bit less $, it had a maple neck and came with two double coil DiMarzio pickups. Mine has plastic covered humbucker pickups, dont know if they were DiMarzios too? It has a tremolo bar, and steel knobs, 3 position toggle switch and some button that I never knew what it was for? If anyone has any idea what model and component info please let me know. Email me at [email protected]

I have a Kawal hollow body guitar that my father had when he passed on. It is a sunburst. It also has the fiddle cut-outs and is in good shape. It plays very well, and sounds great. It has the origional pickup in the front, and appears to have the back one replaced by a IBZ V2. The gears have been replaced by ones made in Germany. The old ones must have been junk. I would also like to know about this guitar so you can e-mail me if you find out anything else on it.

I’ts painted over the original finish-with a flower power theme (bad idea). It’s missing all of it’s electrical components and more. I’m working on getting it playable and are looking for parts.

I have a Kawai electric guitar my dad bought me when I was in high school back in the mid 80’s. It is black with a black neck and roswood fret board, two plastic covered humbucker pickups, I think, since they are the size of two regular pickups but are covered by platic.I want to remove the plastic and see what kind of pickups it has. Been thinking of replacing with DiMarzio’s, maybe. I just recently wanted to try and play again since high school. I would love more info on my guitar but cant seem to find any. I dont know what model it is.: PLZ e-mail me if you even think you have one of these guitars

kawai are now named teisco. The model you have is the same one i learned on. My father has one. In the 1970’s when they were being produced the could cost $100 dollars. The high-end one (yours) was close to $400 dollars! A gibson goldtop cost $250 back then. They are some of the rarest actual makes of guitars around very hard to come by. My advice is not to sell it. They have a beautiful sound and you won’t get want its actually worth unfortunately. But to the right buyer with original case around $1000-1300. Thats as much as i know with a lot of research time.

I have just bought one of these too, although I think mine comes from the early to mid 80’s.
As far as I know these guitars are either made by Kawai Piano Corp, Teisco Guitars (owned by Kawai) or some other company that was owned by Kawai at the time??
I think mine is a solid top but not 100% sure.
So if anyone else knows anything else, please post.

        Phil

Hi I just got given one of these yesterday from a friend who brougt it for au$3.00,( that’s right three dollars.)from the garbage dump store. this model says it is a F=300D E, it has had one tuning key changed, strap button is missing, one of the braces needs re gluing, it has significant fret wear and other signs that it has been a real player in the past, oh and it is missing it’s saddle but over all is in surprisingly good condition for a guitar that has been thrown to the rubbish dump.

I too would like to find out more info about these guitars because they seem to be a good copy of a Martin.

        Phil, sunshine coast , Australia.

This model was exclusively made for export to USA, so very small number this basses can be found in Europe. They have the same LP model guitar, and it’s just perfect. Better than 80% basses made in today in China and Korea.

It’s an italian bass. The brand is "Crucianelli".
I write from Italy; I’m italian. I know what i say.
In Italy there are some people who collect’em, I cannot say what’s the value. The quality is not so high, you’re lucky if the neck is not bended…
It’s not so bad, if you are searching for a particular old style sound it’s ok but it depends of the conditions…

I have a Kawal guitar. It is an electric hollow body with three pickups, toggle switch at the top, three volume controls, one tone control and a whammy bar. I call it a Roy Clark guitar. It is the starburst design and plays great. My Dad got it at a pon-shop sometime around 1969. I am very sure if the name because it is very clear and in pretty good shape. The lacquer finish has some hair line cracking. This is the first time I have ever heard of anyone else having one.

Hi, I have an old Kawal or Kawai guitar that my father bought for me in the early 60’s. I too know nothing about it, and this is the first time I have heard anything about that make of guitar. It is a large hollow body electric. If anyone knows anything about this brand of guitar, or if it has value, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Eileen

      Marie Brown

My friend has what looks like an old Kawal or Kawai acoustic/electric box guitar. Unfortunately, that’s all I know about the guitar. Does anyone know anything about this type of guitar? Any info is appreciated.

      1. Im about to buy a Kawal (by the time you read this I will have bought it) but here goes. There are two basic shapes that I can find which look very similar. The first looks like a les Paul with the toggle on the upper bout and a single cutaway at the lower. The knobs are in a semi arc around the bottom back of the guitar and there is a trem. The other is a double cutaway, the toggle is on the lower bout and the dials are scattered below the bridge (no trem). Can anyone shed any light on these two versions …. Thanks

        Jeff

I have been on skype with guitar master Lee Ping from a town called Watain, i am not sure about the spelling of the town name but i am going to give you the exact broken engelish words he gave me; “Mr jeff son, hold tight to Kawal guitar, no more make Kawal, Sensi Kawal died, nobody got name of Kawal. Kawal is now plenty money” I dont want to steal anybody’s money so hold on to what you got till you can sell for the right price.

  4. Come across an old Jedson, whats it worth?
    Tom

My uncle has a Jedson guitar. Its black, has a Les Paul shaped body and was made in 1968. It doesn’t sound too hot (old strings) but the necks still as straight as the day it was brought. If anyone has a rough idea of what its worth, get in touch!

Global was sold by montgomery Ward in the early 70’s. I have a Les Paul copy, and the guitar is asseset at an average of $300.00 in good condition (normal use wear).

I have been playing for 6yrs now and I currently own a Roland GR-33 synth with a GK-2a pickup. I wanted a Roland G-707 guitar ever since Amir Derakh from Orgy used it the Blue Monday music video. I love that way it looks, It’s got a great range of guitar tones, and I already have a floor synth. I know the GK-1 on the isn’t compatible with my GR-33 synth, but I have an external GK-2a pickup that is!!!

  9. Pricing guitars Fender Elec. / Ovation Adamus Vintage
    Cindy Trotier

Is there a web-site that lists prices for guitars similar to what you would use for used cars (bluebook). I have a copy of a Fender Telecast ’52 (I believe 1st edition) and an ovation adamus that I purchased around 1981-82. I’d like a round about price for them. Also, I have an Epiphone Banjo. Excellent condition. Just looking for prices because I will be selling them soon.

  10. Identifying electric guitar
    Alan Darlington

    Hi,

my first guitar was an electric model bought in the mid sixties in Frank Hessy’s in Liverpool. I asked my mum and dad for a hofner colorama but they couldn’t get one so they got me this one. It was basically a strat copy with three pickups and a tremelo. The body was a distinctive two colour split. I think that the front was a pale green and the back of the body was red. The pick-guard was possibly tortoishell. I think that the tremelo had a chrome cover.

    I hope someone can help.

    regards,

    Alan

I’ve got two left-handed Wilson electric guitars – a black 6 string and a cream 12-string. Both original as I’ve had both from new. One of the pick-ups on the 12-string needs replacing – don’t think I can get an original – it seems to be a Maxon humbucker 34mm x 73mm plus fixing lugs.
I’ve also still an original tape Wem Copicat plus spare tape!

      1. Wilson ranger
        peter

I have a wilson ranger,I got it for a birthday present in 1968 from my mother.this guitar was a student model at the time, and was the lower end of the wilson/ watkins/web collaboration.the guitar neck is narrow and thin ,rosewood fingerboard mahogany neck and body, the pickups are toaster style very high quality with no noise what ever, tthe aranger came in a few variants ,my one has two pickups neck and bridge.although it was a student model it is every bit as good if not better than the mighty watkins Rapier which was the flagship. This guitar can play anything really it has a zero fret and a non adjustable bridge where intonation is concerned. The zero fret keeps the action as low as you want, and I mean LOW! Sound wise, well it has its own sound but consider it a cross between a telecaster and a strat, and you pretty much have it.i would never sell this guitar under any circumstances/ well almost! Anybody looking for one of these is got to be mighty lucky, and collectors can only drurll over the photos in magazines!.i own all the best gibsons and fender guitars, but this one goes everywhere with me whether I’m playing funk or jazz or rockIf I was to add a criticism it would be that the upper frets are hard to access, but it’s something worth living with. I wish you luck in your search, don’t hold out too much hope

HI my name is Andy and I have a WILSON 6 string semi acoustic. Its a really odd thing that I paid about £80 for second hand (about $120). Its got two chrome humbuckers and a single coil which looks like it has been screwed to the damn thing! hello
        my name is ken.
I used to own a Wilson bas when I played in a band around 1967. These were made by Watkins Musical Instruments of Rapier Fame. The company changed their guitar brand name to WEM after a while, but were more famous for their amplifiers. Our lead guitarist also played a Wilson sg.These were great instruments for their time, if you sould not afford a Fender.

Musicians’ Friend Magazine, Holiday issue (Dec. 2004?) has Wilson guitars. It is made in Japan, and modeled after
the handmade Mosrite Guitars made famous by The Ventures. In fact the M.F. Wilson is called "The Venture’s". I don’t have the M.F. before me, but I think it sells for $550 or so. The headpiece looks like the 1965 Venture Mosrite. I own a 1965 Venture Mosrite-why the Wilson caught my eye.
Check it out at Musiciansfriend.com. Thanks, Billy

Hello there. I recenlty bought a left-handed Wilson semi-acoustic for £50 as it didn’t have a nut or bridge on it. Another £50 quid later and it’s been professionally set up and sounds class. Mine’s got a bolt-on neck, a Bigsby-esque trem system and two really class pick-ups on it. The serial number on the neck plate is 18207. Any further information on the guitar or the Wilson company gratefully accepted! I’m also chasing information about an effects pedal I have – it’s an Electrolabs Sustain pedal, made in England, pretty good sound on it but I know absolutely nothing about this at all!! I also have an original 60’s Watkins Copicat with spare tapes – it’s not in mint condition but still does the business fine.

I managed to inherit a Wilson guitar from a friend about 6 months ago and have been trying to find out about it ever since. It’s a proper electric guitar and is still in good condition but it must be from 70s or 80s-any idea of value?

Hi,I have a Wilson ranger,1968, guards red,two toaster pickups.Had this guitar since 1968,lefthanded,and a present from qmy mum. This guitar is brilliant,if you have medium size hands the neck is a dream to play . Just recently had a pro set up,

I have a red Watkins that I know nothing about. It’s a Gibson SG copy and I bought it in 1981 for £48. On the headstock it used to have Watkins written like joined-up handwriting but that fell off and I think I’ve lost it. Not sure what the serial number is cos I’ve only just discovered this website and don’t have the guitar with me.
The action is not brilliant and the machineheads are knackered but I like it. If anyone has more info I’d love to hear it.

    cheers

Jedson actually stands for J.E Dallas and Son who we’re Ukelele makers in the 1930’s 1940’s.
George Formby actually played a Jedson !
They were taken over by Arbiter to become Dallas-Arbiter in the 1960’s and the Jedson brand was used to badge japanese imports.
I still play a Jedson half scale bass sometimes with my band the Fabulous Fezheads

I just bought a guitar that might be a Jedson. I know nothing about them except mine looks like a three quater size Gretsch Duo-Jet. The roller bridge is very well made as are the tailpiece and tremolo set-up. The steel is that of Bigsby’s quality. The colour is a "Gretsch Orange," I don’t know if it’s original. Lastly, there are two plastic "organ type keys on the ‘jack-plate.’ Anyone with any info would be appreciated…

My favorite guitar player, Bob Hartman of Petra (from 1972-1997) used that guitar during the Beat the System Tour 1984-85. Now it is hanging in the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando, Florida. Well, that’s the only player I’ve known to use it. But to find the geeetar, go to http://www.google.com and search for g707 synth and there are quite a few people who are selling it.

I just picked up a 1964 Kawai guitar that looks kinda like a Fender Jaguar but it has 4 pickups and a switch for each pickup. also, the entire pickguards are metal and raised up and it has a strange looking whammy bar spot. I have no idea the differences between ours but I don’t know anything about mine too.

            barry

my first electric guitar (back in ’65) was a kawai…what a piece of crap that was. it kinda looked like a strat – thin solid-body, double cutaway, exaggerated fender-style head, but it weighed a ton, and the neck and electronics were horrible. i don’t remember what i paid for it, but it was in the range of zim-gar and other japanese brands (less than $40 new) – hell, you could get a used gretsch in excellent condition for $50 in those days.
i think i ended up burning it or smashing it (as was the style in those days – i also burned a VOX Phantom – does anyone remember those?

Phil one other thing. while searchimg I came across a site called http://www.guitaczar.com and it looks as if a picture of the exact Watkins neck I have is on the left column of the home page! There is no mention of Watkins on this under construction site but somehow that neck picture is there! I even extracted all the source code and no underlying code mentioning Watkins at all! Hmmm this is spooky!

    1. Re: Watkins Guitars
      Paul

Watkins wre one of, if not the first production electric guitar in England. The rapier came in 22, 33 or 44 with two, three or four pick ups respectively. They came in red or black finish and production, started from 1961.
At the time, they were budget instruments. Watkins, were mainly manufacturers of amps and effects (Like the Watkins copicat).
Later on Watkins became WEM(1970s)and later still Wilson(1970’s and 1980’s) were they were producing guitars until 1982.
They also made some guitars for Vox.
Being budget models, then they are still relatively inexpensive now, you can buy good 1960’s 22s or 33s for around £300 and I have a few and seen a few others but you can pick them up very cheaply becuase most people have never hard of them, I’m talking about £30 -£50.
I’ve never seen a 44 so they must be rarer than the others and so I reckon you could add £100 to that figure.
      Hope this helps.

I own a Rapier 44 – bought for £20 in 1978! I saw several Rapiers in ‘Rock Bottom’ in Croydon – mostly 33s going for about $300 each – the 44 may be worth more. Why noy call them? Do you have any spares for yours? I need a scratch guard and pickup covers…

      Frank McLaughlin

Hello Phil! Would you believe I bought the neck of a guitar back in around 1972 and it was painted orange. The guy charged me $75 which was pretty costly considering that it wasn’t a Fender or any recognizable type neck (at least to me) but somehow in the back of my mind I recall the luthier telling me that it was a Watkins! Now this has to be what it is because I’ve never heard that name before. However, I have no clue what the actual body looked like but I can tell you that the neck is almost identical to a stratocaster neck except the headstock is longer but sort of shaped like the Fender headstock and somewhat straighter (not as fanned out). I’m not sure what the length is, it looks just a tad shorter for some reaon that a strat. I made a start body when I was 15 and am now 42 and still have not put them together because I had bad liuck with a router and my first trial telecaster body. Looked like moon craters when I finished with it. hehe so nexyt week I am taking the Watkins neck and start body replica I cut out of an old deconstructed upright piano and going to put Buddy Guy type lace sensor Fender pickups, the whole nine yards Fender and see how it works. The neck action is beautiful and smooth as a baby’s bottom with that oiled looking rosewoood with real dot abalone pearl inlays. Fret wire looks pretty think also. Let me know if you have a pic. My email is [email protected] I can also scan and send you one of the neck if you like. Take care. Frank McLaughlin

Hi Frank, I’ll get a pic for you, as you’ve probably worked out they used a strat style body, mine was originally red though someone has painted it black, which has worn thro to the white primer.
Funny you should say bout the Buddy Guy pickups, my guitar has been signed by Buddy when he came to the venue where I work, not sure if he played it though.

Hey Phil, sorry for the 3 year delay! I just saw your post back. My email addy changed so that’s probably why I never got a copy. Mine was probably red like yours but it may have faded to look orangish. I still haven’t put that darn thing together. You’re lucky to have Buddy Guy sign that. I have a hat he signed from his Buddy Guy’s Legends Chicago club. Well good luck! Thanks for your feedback. Frank

I seem to have become a Watkins Guitar collector by default since it was never my intention to start collecting them.
I have had a Rapier Bass since about 1967.It is currently in pieces and needs renovating. The action was always terribleIt is an awful pink/red colour. Many years ago I removed all the frets and converted it into a fretless bass.

My second Watkins is a red (possibly 33 but no other markings to identify) which I bought from a second hand shop in 1968 for 20 pounds, which seemed like a lot of money then.Serial No.14462.
It has rather a strange body shape, like a strat but with the horns rounded off.Action is very good.

My final purchase was 1998 again in a second hand store, a Rapier 44 for 100 pounds.I don’t think the shop owner realised it was a vintage guitar or it would have been much more.It had been badly hand-painted black body. When I renovated it, there were signs that it had been red but since I already had a red Rapier, I resprayed it a light blue to match the early strat colour.Serial No.17211.
Action is good but not as good as the 33.

Both my Rapiers say Wilson on the baseplate.Anyone know why not Watkins or WEM?

Does anyone know how to date the Rapiers fron serial No.?Charlie Watkins is on e-mail but not very keen to answer trivial questions from the masses (understandably).

Would anyone else like to leave details of their Watkins guitars?

Hello Watkins also made amps in the late 60’s (WEM) so they re-named their guitars to Wilson. Thats why both your rapiers say wilson on the base-plate.

Sorry Reg I seem to have copied your message. I was trying to say I have a Watkins Sapphire guitar from the 60s. 3 Pickups (I think humbuckers), tremolo bar (which is a flat bar unlike the strat) sunburst, body like a heavy, larger strat but neck and heads are different… 3 tuning heads on each side like a Gibson. It is all original and plays very well. Have a Selmer truvoice Diplomat amp of same era which also works well. Have you heard of or have any info about the Sapphire?

I recently purchased a "Wilson" left-handed semi-acoustic six-stringer for the princely sum of £50 from a guitar shop as it had no bridge on it. It appears to be based on a Gretsch Country Gent. After havin a Gibson style bridgea on it and a re-set up it’s playing like a dream and the pick-ups are just class!! I would put them slightly behind my Ibanez Artists humbuckers but not by much. If anyone has any info on the guitar I’d be over the moon to hear from you!

My first electric guitar was a Watkins Rapier 33, bought in 1962 for £30 (7 weeks wages!). I’ve been through the Fender and Gibson phase and now, in my dottage, want to turn the clock back. So, I’ve just acquired another Rapier 33. I didn’t realise they were so lightweight and a lot louder than they were through my 15 watt amp.

I’m after a tremelo arm – can anyone help me? Also a headstock logo.

            Thanks.

There’s someone selling the funny "backwards" Watkins logo transfers at this moment on eBay at about £7.00.
Not sure about the trem, but try modifying a strat or mustang replacement.

I acquired a left-handed 1958 Rapier Deluxe a few years ago. It was in pretty bad shape (missing bridge, neck warped) but I got a guy to repair it, and it plays awesome. Great old school jangle. Still has the original vinyl carrying bag, too! As someone with the last name Watkins, I had to have one. 🙂

Parts occasionally come up on e-Bay, but there’s no one who supplies them regularly. You can get good history and dating information here:

Good friend of the late Reg Watins, who I’m afraid died earlier this year.I have come into possesion of a 33 that was one of Reg’s favorites and he kept for himself when he closed the factory. Chrome a bit pitted as it was in his loft for years. Gonna spend a lot of time and effort to renovate this guitar in respect for Reg. Mine has Watkins in the headstock.

I got a Wilson Rapier 22 from a shop in Kent for £80 last year (2000), reduced from £120. The action is nice and it has quite a mellow sound. Tremelo is great – a simple but very effective mechanism. Condition overall is excellent, but there are some pits in the chrome and cracks in the body finish.

I think the change from Watkins to Wilson was in the late ’60s, but there are lots of other small changes over the years, control layouts, types of knobs and switches and the style of name cut into the scratchplate.

Mine has metal knobs like a Vox, with a plastic ‘boost’ switch and the name in capitals – the scratchplate is three-ply white-black-white and the name is machined into the top layer of plastic, showing the name in black. I have seen the name in lower case italic elsewhere and with cheaper plastic knobs, and one with a metal switch in s different position. The funny little pickup switches don’t seem to change.

Also I have seen one with a black neck and red body. Most were red, but black blue and white have also been spotted. Watkins ones have a decal on the headstock, Wilsons only have the name on the tailpiece. Don’t know about wems.

Very nice guitars, not deserving the snobby derision of those who only saw them as stepping stones to the holy Strat.

I bought a second hand Watkins for 30 quid back in 1976.
I have no idea how old it is, or it’s model typ.
It has 2 pick ups and the logo on the head stock is in block form.
                It’s not in great shap.
But trying to find out it’s value and history is problemati.
It’s stuck up in the lof.
I need to fetch it down and photograph it.
I thought it was a strat copy. But am I wrong?

I have a watkins that is non-wem and has a watkins hi-lo vibrato that is the best thing iv’e ever tried of its kind as far being strong at both tuning stability and resonance volume/tone loss-really takes alot of whamming and stays in tune for alot of it-a really great guitar pickups look like dearmond humbuckers

I emailed charlie watkins, ages ago about the same thing and he said to me that the serial are random and bear no relation to dating. As far as I can tell there is no easy way to date a watkins, other than gut feeling, they range from very early to quite recent, as I’m sure you know.
They only came in black and red so anything else has been resprayed. If it has WEM, written on the headstock this is a later model and, obviously not as valuable as a plain one.
Wilson evolved from Watkins (Not sure when) but they continued production untill 1982 (For more info and a picture on this see the Ultimate Guitar Book).

I have a Rapier 33 which has been lovingly restored by a friend. However there is an exceedingly faint image of the Watkins Rapier logo on the finger plate and would love to get a clearer, sharp copy of it so I can have a new transfer/sticker made up. Does anyone know where I can get a picture of how it looked in showroom condition? I also need a Tremelo handle.
