  2. WANTED: GIBSONS BARNEY KESSEL, HOWARD ROBERTS, ES-335 W/ 25-1/2 SCALE, OLD GUITARS PREFERRED
    Glen

Hi Guitar Players, Do you have an old Gibson Barney Kessel, Howard Roberts, or and odd ES-335 with a long 25-1/2 fret scale? ALL GIBSONS, nice Epiphone Elites, and anything of quality. I am NOT a buyer / seller, nor would I ever pull parts off instruments – I am the kind of guy that you would almost certainly enjoy talking to about instruments. I am trying to replace guitars lost in the 80’s from theft. I am ill, and re-learning to play again so that I can cut back on my meds, and to find "something" good within the time I have. I can buy several guitars, and prefer nice instruments of high quality and costs. I’m a former Luthier and know my way around instruments, so please show me your finest – I can appreciate them. I can’t really call myself a collector because I don’t obsess over value, but I do obsess over perfection, restoration, refinement, repair, etc. My forte was restoration and I love authenticity and originality of well crafted guitars. When I pass on, some of my guitars will go to museums and most will go to friends, to remember me by. I am well considered by the music industry, and have paid it forward all my life, and have given more of my work away than have ever charged for it. My hands are injured and arthritic, but I have surprised everyone after just two months of re-learning, and I can motivate my hands on older wood. If you have something that you’ve treasured, but haven’t played much, perhaps you can contact me. If I acquire it, it will surely go to a great place or person when I can no longer play, or when I am gone. Please take a chance and contact me. With thanks and best regards, Glen Quan [email protected] (415) 990-4531 ( please be careful with my number, its my medical phone, so you can find me easily, but please guard it. Thank you.

    1. ES-335
      Anonymous

My friend recently passed away and left an ES-335 with original pickups, circa 1963 I think. His kids may be willing to sell it ( I am his executor, and life time friend). I am not a musician and know only a little. It has been heavily played in the past and has some surface finish damage, where a pick guard might normally be on other guitars, about 2″ square. Color is Sunburst, case looks like has seen every juke joint east of the Mississippi over its lifetime, but it too is original. You sound like a guy who could me with maximizing value for his heirs. Any advice is appreciated

I have a Gibson Nouveau that I purchased in ’87. It plays and sounds great. At the time I was told that it is a departure from Gibson in that it is entirely handmade. I have no way of knowing if that is true.

Hey there. I have one of these too. I bought it from 30th Street Guitars here in New York about 7 years ago. As a beginner, it sounded great to my ear, but i figured for $275 i probably just had an inexperienced ear. Now, having played many many many guitars since, i have to say that it still sounds pretty great. The spruce top is particularly high-grade. The only thing i can find about it online is from Gruhn’s guitar guide. Here’s the link: http://books.google.com/books?id=A2qU15xkryQC&pg=PA308&lpg=PA308&dq=%22nv6r+s%22&source=web&ots=oI2xXywXGH&sig=FXpvWGastEvVV2vsxyxZi90sC2M

I had a Gibson Nouveau Mandolin. Beautiful instrument. Gibson does not provide info on these (almost denies knowledge when I inquired), although is was a series advertised with a one-page ad in FRETS in 1986 (a giveaway contest) but DROPPED after Gibson bought FLATIRON company. Unfortunately, I had to sell mine, I believe they were made in Japan and I had a luthier do some work on it (successful) to bring it up to Gibson standards and expectations!

I have two Gibsin Nouveau Jumbo F/Ts I underrstand the guitars were mad for a short time at Gibson in 86 87 What puzzels me is these have oval labels and sn stamped to the neck block. Gota call Gibson I guess.

            Jack Sasson

I had one given to me recently as I’m getting back into acoustic and after a few repairs and string height adjustments, this is a great playing guitar. From the links it sounds like the parts were made in Japan in the late 80’s and sent to the US for the final assembly and finish – ducking the import tariffs, I’m guessing. My Luthier was impressed that it is finished in a nitrocellulos laquer. I noticed Fender stopped imorting Japanese guitars made at the same time because they were as good as if not better than the CBS crap that was coming out of the US factories at that time too. All conjecture this…

I have a Gibson Nouveau also, mine is a NV-6-TM. while I don’t know all the facts I live in Nashville and bought mine in the late 80’s from a man that worked for Gibson.

From what I was told the guitars were assembled at the gibson factory here in Nashville but I don’t know much more that about the history.

There really great guitars, mine has some super sweet action, plays almost like a strat. Only problem I have with the guitar is that neck is not quite stable, when the weather gets cold it starts to buzz at the 12th fret, come summer time and all’s well.

If you think you may interested in buying mine you can email me and we’ll talk.

I got this guitar from an 89 year old man who was the original owner. I am looking to sell it. The finish is almost brand new with a lot of crazing under the lacquer. It has replaced tuners. It doesn’t have the pearl drops on the bridge but it looks like it may have been the one for this guitar. I am considering all offers and will send pics. Thanks. [email protected]
