  1. Gibson J45 modification
    Steven kay

I’ve got a 1949 or earlier J45 and am considering replacing the bridge to the newer ‘belly under’ design and fixing some new tuning pegs.Does anybody know of a decent bridge with a pickup included (as my straight bridge doesn’t have one) and will i be able to find replacement tuning pegs that will fit into the original holes in the headstock? Im not planning on selling it so the vintage price is not an issue for me as i’d rather have a great playing guitar than an expensive ornament! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    1. Re: Gibson J45 modification
      Jim Anderson

I would stay with a belly up bridge. You may
not want to sell it now but later you may.
The belly up design is original and the belly
down will not get you anything except about a
      $700 loss.

I have a Gibson ES325 that I got in the early 80s. I understand it to be an early to mid 70s student version of the 335. It is in excellent condition, missing one volume knob. Any idea what it’s worth? Thanks.

: I’m looking to buy a les paul gothic, if anyone has one for sale please feel free to email me. thanks for your time!

      : Tara

Sam Ash is selling them new (w/case) for $999, so you might want to check there. If the Sam Ash near you doesn’t have anymore, ask them to order one from another store (they can do that). $999 is the cheapest you will find a new one through a dealer; used, you can probably find one cheaper (say $799-$899), but then again, it will be used, not new.
      Good luck,
      Robert

    DANA RAINS

WHY HAVE I NEVER SEEN ANY OTHER GIBSON LIKE MINE ANYWHERE? DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MY GIBSON NOUVEAU? I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND ANOTHER ONE LIKE IT.CAN YOU HELP?

    1. Re: GIBSON NOUVEAU
      Daniel

I own an NV12. It is exquisite with a beatiful sound (and I have a huge guitar collection) Note the hand made inlays I wouldnt sell my NV12 (w/case)for less than $800. It also depends on your serial number. many of them were hand made in Gibson’s custom shop.

      1. Re: GIBSON NOUVEAU
        jussi

: Yeah, Ive got an NV 6 also it sounds great.
I’ve got the NVJ version (jazz archtop w/pickup). The headstock says "Epipohone" instead of nouveau but all else is the same. I emailed Gibson and they said the same thing.. MIJ, assembled in USA. Mine was made in 87 only- The first 8 months as "Nouveau by Gibson" and the last 4 months under "Epiphone" (mine). Anyway, I havn’t seen any info other than in gruhn’s (alas, no prices). I have not seen or heard of ONE other jazz Nouveau. If you have seen one or have one, please email me!!! [email protected]

            Abigail Gwin

I inherited my nouveau from my dear friend and wonderful Jazz player four years ago and I’ve never played. And I have thought of selling it at a yard sale until now. WOW

          2. Re: This popular thread has been given its own page :... Bob
            Bob

I have a Gibson/Nouveau NV-6 flattop acoustic w/mahogany sides which I bought new in, I think, ’87, with a brown Gibson hardshell case. The pearl inlay at the top of the headstock says "Nouveau" and the diamond inlay at the center of the headstock says "Gibson." The sticker inside the soundhole says "Gibson." I remember that the music store, Limelite Music in East Aurora, NY, had only three: a 6-string acoustic (mine), a 6-string acoustic with lots of MOP inlays (a co-worker bought that one & still has it), and a 12-string acoustic (another co-worker bought that one but she sold it recently). These guitars are AWESOME, considering what we paid for them. Friends of mine that I used to play with have Guilds and Martins and I’d put my NV-6 up against them any day in terms of playability, tone, and build quality. The neck is dead straight & the action is super. I still play it. The owner of Limelite told me recently "Don’t sell your Nouveau!"
            I’m finding–from reading these postings–that:
            1) There weren’t very many Nouveaus made in ’87, possibly as little as 139(?), and that there is more to the Nouveau ‘story’ than I first thought;
            2) There isn’t a lot of information out there on them probably because there weren’t that many made, and it wasn’t one of Gibson’s "main" lines, and they apparently discontinued the "Gibson" Nouveaus shortly after production started;
            3) Pretty much everyone who has a Nouveau, be it a Gibson or Epiphone version, loves it, as I do mine.

It’s unfortunate that there seems to be no reasonable valuation data out there for used Nouveau instruments–evidently only current owners know their true worth!
I certainly know more about my guitar than I did an hour ago.

I have an Epiphone NVJ-SB as you describe, I found it in a seconed hand shop in Sydney for A$1200. I think it is a jem and I don’t realy care about its value, I just think Gibson is a wacky company that regardless happen to make great and occasionally interesting guitars

I know how you feel, I have a Nouveau 12 string and can’t find any information on it at all. Its not in the blue book and none of the music stores in my area can help. I would at least like to find some information on it. Good luck on your search.

I have a Gibson Nouveau and I too am mystified by it’s make. You and I must be one of three people in the world that have em, my sunds great though.

        Fred Moult

Hi, I’ve got a Gisbson Nouveau too! I brought it in Melbourne in 1986. It’s a model NV 6 and sounds really good. I haven’t been able to find out much about these on the web either. Good to hear that someone else has got one!

      2. Re: GIBSON NOUVEAU
        hbolt

have the nv-185 version of the nouveau, when i contacted the gibson factory there were very helpfull and confirmed that the nouveau was only in production under gibson for 1 year in the 80s, I then contacted the guitar shops reccommended to me by gibson for a valuation, (I bought the nv-185 off ebay for 350 dollars which is about 225 uk pounds (I am from england)). they inform me that they recall the instruments and that they were of a very high standard and the value would be around 750 -900 us dollars, which I was very pleased at indeed. I hear that the guitars are rare in the u.s so i prosume that they are even more so in the uk, I have not seen another one since, If I was to compare in to a taylor, high end guild, etc, no its not as good but compared to difference in price the guitar is unbelivable, I think if the guitar stayed the same but the nouveau logo at the top was actualy the real gibson logo, and you had just pick it up in a shop you would’nt question the quality. I would’nt sell the guitar because I feel I payed a very good price for it, but if i had payed more i would look at trading it in for the real gibson logo.(stupid I know)

I bought a pr700 this year for $129 U.S. Dollars at a pawn shop. These have been discontinued by Epiphone for quite a while. Does your neck look more like a Gibson neck than an Epiphone neck?

  14. I have an OLD Gibson, any ideas on what it is? what year it is?
    Justin Bower

Hello, I was hoping someone could help me out with a question about an old accoustic Gibson. My father recently passed away, and it was his guitar. It’s in pretty bad shape, but not unrecoverable. However, none of us know it’s date/type, and I am interested in finding out.
I will be posting a pic asap, but in the mean time here’s what I have in the way of information…
    1) it’s at LEAST made before 1963, because I have a pic of my dad holding it from that year or there abouts.
    2) although someone painted it pure black at some point (hopefully it wasn’t dad..don’t know if I coudl forgive him for that one;) it looks like it may have been dark colored with some sort of burst wood pattern on the front
    3) it is a little smaller than my standard size guitar, and the curves are more accented, looking rounder.
    4) instead of the place at the back of my guitar that houses the pegs you wrap the strings around, it has some sort of metal plate on the very end of the guitar, that attaches to two pieces of metal that extend up to the bridge, in a "V"
    5) the metal plate on the bottem says "patented 1910"
    6) there is a gibson maker label inside, with a place for the model and serial number(?) but I can barely read the number
    7) the gibson logo on the top of the head of the guitar looks pretty old, like it was originally handpainted by the manufacturer…

If you have any info on what model this might be, or where to start looking, please let me know!!:)
    Thanks for your help,
    Justin Bower

I’ve got one too. I think it was made in ’35. It’s got the back, which I learned was a bonus option.

I think they are so rare no one values them. Most muscians I talk to never even heard of them.

I see them occasionally for about $500 – $1,000, which I think is absurb. I sooner keep mine as a nice talk piece them cut loose of it that.

I would love to find out someone actually values my 1935 Gibson Banjo-Mandolin and tripped across this blog looking but sadly, still not anything anybody wants to pay any money for.

Sorry to sound discouraging but I’ve owned mine for 30 years and find it dishearting that no one wants it. Better luck…
