  1. Harlan Smith 6-string PSG
    Ann Vidrine

Hi, I just bought a used Harlan Smith 6 string PSG. It only has 2 pedals. I mostly intend to play Cajun Music. Do yall know what I should tune the strings to and the pedals? Thanks, Ann

    1. Tuning
      Anonymous

Ann, if you do an internet search there are alternative tunings for 6 string guitars such as E9th, C6th, drop D, drop G tunings and several others I’ve heard about. If you have a 6 string Pedal Steel you have a few choices here.
I would try the E9th first since most ten string pedal steels use this one the most. But if that doesn’t suit you, you may also try a standard guitar tuning. Chances are, your 6 string steel guitar is specially made for someone who wanted to only bend just a couple of strings. One pedal would be used to bend just the B string and the second pedal used to bend the G string and both pedals at the same time would bend both strings. The effects would become a cross between a Lap Steel, Dobro, and a Pedal Steel guitar, and a Telecaster with the benders installed all wrapped into one, played with a slide. I believe you have a one – off unique instrument there, very rare, but would produce a wide variety of sounds. Just sit back, relax, try the different tunings and see what you can do with it.
Most of all, just have fun.

This quite surprises me. have you a pic of the guitar?
I am D I Langdon, and I do build my own pedal steels, but I think it may be one that I had and worked on. Sounds like the red pearl is a later finish.

        Velda Hiscott

I have the prototype Ernie steel Guitar built by my husband, Rolly R. Hiscott who worked for Ernie in Newport Beach, CA. It is for sale. Rolly passed away Jan.11, 2015. I am his wife and I would like to sell it as soon as possible. I live in Franklinton, LA. I have had the guitar ever since my husband died and have been waiting for someone who would appreciate the workmanship. Rolly (Dick) Hiscott invented the keyless tuner.

We have the proto-type with blue print to the keyless tuner. Built in Newport Beach. My husband worked for Ernie Ball and designed the tuner.

Greetings Velda, in researching an Ernie Ball Black Eagle PSG, I came across your post dated Wednesday, 3-21-2012. I own one of these guitars, and need information concerning the Tuners, and what I call the tuning gear locking fingers. Mine are worn at the tip just enough that they will not hold correct tuning pitch, and one is broken. I’m thinking that I’ll never find these parts, and I will have to have them machined by someone. Could you or someone possibly help me in this? Thank you

Just ran on to your comment. My husband was a great machinist and machined this guitar for Ernie Ball. Rolly invented the keyless tuner. I still have that guitar if you are enterested. It’s one of a kind and the proto type my husband built. Franklinton, Louisiana, 985-789-7734.

Musician’s Friend has the Carter Starter (which) has everything you need, including four knee levers) for $700 for the bare bones version. That just might be no tax and free shipping as well. You might find something on Ebay, but cheaper than the Carter Starter, you’re also likely to end up with junk. Good luck.

I bought a Carter Starter & had to rebuild it to make it worth playing.Bud done a good job but didn’t put a lot of time into the original. Most everyone I’ve talked to that bought one either did as I & rebuilt it or sold or traded it.Best bet is to find a good cheap used GFI or something else.A bit more $$$ than the Carter but you’ll keep it longer.

: Have a 10 pedal fender model 1000 in perfect condition with orginal cases in excellant condition and would like to know value.

It depends – is it an early one with the triangular silver-colored pedals, or a later black pedal (side mounted rod) type? the changers are totally different on the two other than the cables used to pull them. They are the exceptions to the Fender vintage world – the older ones are worth LESS, and Fender pedal steels as a rule aren’t very valuable. Personally, I love ’em, but they are completely impractical for modern playing. None of the modern instructional materials are workable with them and you will find zero teachers thhat work with Fender beeginners.

An older one (early 1963 and earlier…and there are a few with triangle pedals and the later changer) is worth around $800-900 in mint condition; a newer one a hundred or two more. You’ll see them on eBay all the time with asking prices of $1500 — with NO bids. Gruhn has had one for months at $795 with no takers.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but that’s the reality.

There is a TINY market for these. Best place – The Steel Guitar Forum.

Is that a keyless steel guitar? If it is keyless I am the original designer and have the only other one in 12 string. I was employed by Ernie Ball as his designer and engineer from 1971 to 1974 You can contact me in person if you like at 985-789-1575 [email protected] I can provide you with photo’s of my keyless steel 12 string upon request.

: I’m having a terrible time trying to find parts to fix up my old "SIERRA CABLE DRIVE" pedal steel.
Where would one get parts for this pedal steel? I need the whole pedal outfit & Rods & also Some of the Knee Levers.
Would You suggest replacing the pickups as well?
I do believe I will need to replace some of the tuning keys also.
THANKS FOR ANY HELP , JIM FLOWERS

: ANyone know where I can get a used Fender 400?

Yes, I have a late ’60s Fender 400 in good condition and in the original case. However, the 4th pedal was removed for some reason. I am in the process of trying to find the pedal but will sell if someone wants it as is. The guitar is playable it is just missing the 4th (far right) pedal.
If you would like to see pictures of it e-mail me at

: : I have what I can only figure to be a Fender 400. I has a black face with the Fender logo, the actual body looks like some sort of burled maple(don’t know why they would hide that with that black stuff)…It has three pedals, and one knee lever….In the original case, the latches aren’t even beginning to rust…I can’t see a volume or tone knob on it anywhere…It has 10 strings. The volume pedal and what looks to be orignal era cables(2) are also in the case..The only number I can find on it is stamped twice on the bottom side. The number is 1605…Trying to run info down on it as we speak, going down in a little while to get a new set of strings for it…
