  1. Used Dano 59 DC
    Eric Callahan

I have a barely used Dano 59DC that I am trying to sell but I am having a hard time getting any bites. I was wondering if any body could give me insight as to how much I should be asking. The guitar itself is in mint condition, I barely used it at all, there are no pick scratches on the front and no scuffs on the back. I honestly cant think of anything on it that has changed since I bought it, which was about 5 or 6 years ago. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated

I’ve seen anywhere from $169-$400, but somewhere around $300 seems reasonable… speak of it, I’m here because I’m looking for a Dano, and I’ll have $290 in two months (I’m 14, and getting a job that will pay that much in that much time)… but yeah, I’ve seen $300 as a more reasonable number in most cases. Hope it helps!

I have a Coral Wasp Bass in my closet. It’s a little dusty. Orinigal working lipstick tube pickups. It’s the red Signature Design kinda cowboy looking. Looks like it was carved out of a hunk of wood. Bought it at a garage sale in downtown Atlanta. The original owner was probably an African American Blues Man. I am a 40’s Caucasian woman who hasn’t played in 6 years. Plus I still have my Fender.

  6. Bridge Swapping
    IanM

I’m a bit of a newbie to guitar tech stuff. Thing is, I have a U2 reissue, and I love it except for the bridge, which I’m getting kind of sick of. I wondered if it could be switched for one of the adjustable bridges that are on Allparts without much work. Thanks.

    1. Re: Bridge Swapping
      Deaconblues

      :
      Ian,
You can easily swap bridges on a U2. I have a U2 and made the swap with no trouble. You’ll need to set the bridge and string height once you’ve done it to get the intonation correct, but it’s not hard. The Allparts Danelectro bridge you’re talking about is for the U3 – the mounting holes are the same, so it fits right in.

      1. string height
        Dan Dille

How, pray tell, does one go about setting the string height on this beastie? I figured the cheapo bridge would have to be shot down hard to the top to prevent it pulling out. This is a mystery I can’t seem to get an answer to: How to set the action.

  7. Converting Baritone to Six String Bass
    Nick

I recently bought a Dano Baritone reissue and want to convert it to an E-E six string bass. Does anyone who’s done this already have advice on how to proceed. I’d like to change the bridge to something with adjustable saddles… is there a readily available bridge that anyone would recommend. Any suggestions would be appreciated

    Thanks,

      Hello,

I’m looking for information on this, as well. Did you ever try it? I just wonder if the tension from heavier strings would warp that neck? The Fender Bass VI strings are usually 25 to 95 gauge, as opposed to the Erne Ball 13-72 gauges. Thanks!:

D’Addario makes a set of strings they call Guitar Bass, probably like the Bass VI. I put them on my doubleneck and played it for years without any problem. The original bridge can be intonated nearly perfect with a little adjustment from a qualified tech. The neck can definitely take the tension.

  9. strap peg solution?
    Bruce

I would be interested in hearing from anyone on alternative strap peg solutions. Much as I love my 56-U2 and DC-3 bass, those pegs suck! I can’t even glue them in since one fell out and can’t be found! Thanks!

    1. Re: strap peg solution?
      Deaconblues

      : Bruce,
I took a tip from another U2 owner for my strap pegs. With a pencil, mark on the peg where it comes out of the body. Then carefully pull out the peg (this may not be so hard, if it’s loose). Then take the peg and cut it off at your pencil line (a hack saw worked for me). Now give it a good coat of super glue and reinsert it into the hole in the guitar body. Take a regular strap button (about $5 for a pair), look at the mounting screw that came with it and drill an apporiate sized hole into the original strap peg. Now install the new strap button. You’re screwing into the plastic strap peg you cut, causing it to expand slightly. This will make it fit even more snuggly in the hole, as well as being super glued.

You can also use a wooden dowel as the insert for the hole in the guitar, but I just found it easy to use the existing strap pegs. Of course, just pulling them out and super glueing thing back in will take care of them being loose, but I preferred the shape of the replacement metal strap button. I also think it looks better.

Hi y’all, just got a ’62 Convertible with the "top down" (no pick up or electronics) I have already rigged the bracket on a reissue lipstick pickup to work with the existing mount holes with rubber washers, what I need to know is where I ground the jack? There is no screw mounts for the bridge like other Dano’s etc…I am already going to ground the unshielded pup wire to the back of the volume control, can I ground the jack there too? Or the tone control? I know the old electronics could be bought as a kit to insert with no bridge ground & all prewired so I’ve been assuming it has to ground to one of the pots. Any input or pics or schematics are much appreciated. Thanks,
      Danny

I just finished rewiring my U1 to original-style and had to think about this as well. The switch has 3 settings so in the lower switch position, the tone control (next to the switch) functions normally. In the middle position, the tone control is bypassed entirely. In the top position, the tone control rolls off lows instead of highs, creating a sound similar to that of a bridge pickup.
You need an SPDT switch with a center off position. This way the tone control is disconnected in the center position. Here’s a page with a schematic and info:

  14. Ohm ratings for reissue lipstick pickups?
    Mark

Is the ohm rating to original specs (4.75 kohm) on the reissue lipstick pickups? The Dano ads would have me believe it, but you never know…it’s so tempting to make them "hot".

    1. Re: Ohm ratings for reissue lipstick pickups?
      Denny Turner

Original vintage ohmage was targeted at 4.7ohms, but loose tolerances produced many pickups with a sorta wide range around that figure. Reissue Dano lipstick pickups are targeted at 4.0 K ohms, and extremely good tolerances make all I’ve tested dead on 4K.

      1. Re: Ohm ratings for reissue lipstick pickups?
        Mark Pedersen

        Hi Denny;
Thank you for the excellent info. So, Dano did a better job of making their pups original than Rickenbacker, which apparently has made their toaster pups way too hot (up to 12 ohms). You’ve confirmed what my ears were suspecting. Thanks again.

    Josh

I have a 59-DC re-issue and the tape binding is pulling away from the body. I think that this is a common problem, and I was wondering if anyone have a solution to fix it?

    1. Re: 59-DC Binding
      Denny Turner

The binding is glued at the factory with a heat active glue. Heat the tape with a hair dryer and it will glue right back down by pressing it back into place. Hold it down in place with some twine wrapping a folded towel against the curved tape to keep pressure on the tape until it cools back down. The heat will also stretch the tape which usually pulls up because not enough heat was applied at the factory and thus not stretching the tape enough and not setting the glue properly.

  20. Need Danelectro Baritone replacement bridge
    Ian Whalen

    hi,
I currently have a Dano Baritone w/ the wood saddled bridge. As you may know this bridge makes the guitar a tuning nightmare. I puchased the guitar new about 3 years ago. Can anyone point me in the right direction in finding a bridge w/ proper metal saddles? I’m looking as well. I tried putting an intoneable bridge off a U3 on it, but the string spacing is too wide and the end mounting hole doesn’t line up. Pincott’s or Allparts sell the guitar bridges, but not intoneable baritone or six string bass danelectro bridges. Good luck, and let me know if you find a supplier.

      Josh Wow

Well this is a cool bass but it just isn’t for me. It’s a great bass and I wanted to save it for recording but who knows when that’s going to be. I haven’t picked it up and played it in over a month so I’ve decided to sell or trade it for something else. It has three lipstick pickups, 7 different pickup combinations, the best tuners and bridge that you can get on a Danelectro bass, tone and volume controls, and it comes in a black/gold sparkle finish. It is in excellent condition with only a few minor scratches. It lists for $500 on the Danelectro website (they aren’t made anymore though). I’m selling it for $250 shipped or I will consider trading for just about anything except for effects pedals (unless it’s a Sansamp Bass Driver) and guitars. I would love to have a 5 string bass, maybe a cool 4 string (BC Rich anyone?), a multitrack recorder, or some cymbals for my drumset. Speaker cabs are great too but you’d have to either pay for shipping or live close enough to meet me somewhere. If you want pictures of the bass just email [email protected] and I’ll send some to you.

      Hi Dan,
I have a "minty nice" Danelectro double neck 6/12 in Pearl White Metallic with the factory hard case for sale. Not a scratch or ding anywhere. Price is $500 + actual shipping. Let me know if you are interested.

How about $100 for the case – I already have the guitar ?
