  1. Looking for 40th Anniversary American Standard Strat
    Misty Moore

About 6 years ago my husband had one of these guitars. It was midnight blue with a rosewood fret board. Someone stole it & I’m now looking for another one just like it. If anyone has a guitar like this, please drop me a line at [email protected]. Thanks!

I have one Chris. It is near mint, in silver gray or Pewter. It has original case which is near mint too. I can send with owner’s manual and everything, except I can’t find a tremelo bar (but I’m still looking). Price is $850. I’d have to get $$$ and shipping charges up front. I can send a picture.

This guitar is also completely original. It has had some other pick-ups in there at one time (I think), but nothing has been altered, only some pot wires (not PC board). It is now wired stock. It has original pick-ups in place and they work great.

I am looking for a Rickenbacher or a Tele Elite. I might trade for something else, but would want name brand guitar of at least the same value.

I see your add was placed in July, so you may have found one by now. If you did, I’m glad.

      Have a good Holiday!

      Best Regards,

      Terry (USA)

I was wondering how I can tell if my pickups are original. I bought a 1979 tobacco sunburst and it looks like all three pickups match. It has flush poll pieces black plastic bottoms, white and black leads with numbers on them. Thanks!

  6. Strat American standard - wood types
    Ian Roberts

How does the different type of wood used in the body affect the sound of an american standard, particularly given that the pick ups really determine the sound quality. The ash body is supposed to be better than other types of timber. Is there any truth to that or is it simply a sales pitch?

    1. Re: Strat American standard - wood types
      Matt Myers

      Hi Ian,
I never heard about ash having a better sound until after I bought my 2000 American Standard Natural (ash). A friend of mine who has a bit more guitar knowledge informed me of this. I love the guitar, but I honestly have a hard time believing there is a huge difference in sound. Anyway, I have a baby on the way, so a couple of my guitars will be on ebay this weekend, including the Strat. I would recommend that you check out the ash body if you haven’t already. Maybe you’ll notice the difference! Sorry I couldn’t help much more.

    Greg Buckles

I just bought a guitar in january on ebay for $75 just as a starter guitar and i thought it would be time to buy a new one now that I know I’m going to stick with it. I was looking to buy something in the range of $600 (Most likely a fender, but maybe a Rickenbacker). I was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback on what i should do. Most people are satisfied with strats, even the newer mexican made ones. But if you could send me some feedback advice that would be great.

        Shawn,

Fender did not introduce the Mustang until late-1964. These early guitars usually have a slab body (no contours) and a serial number starting with "L". Beginning sometime in 1965, there is a large "F" on the neck plate.

If your guitar has the original white finish, this is the coolest of the available finishes at the time (white, red, or blue until the later 1960’s). It should have a reddish tortoiseshell pickguard.

The original case would be rectangular with a speckled gray covering and orange interior.

If the guitar is in nice shape and all original, it’s probably worth in the $600-800 range.

        : Can someone help me put a price on a 1963 Fender Mustang… Cream color… short neck…???

hi, I want to buy a new amp and I was thinking off a Fender ’65 Twin Reverb (reissue) or a Fender Twin Amp and I don’t really know witch one is the best. I don’t really need a second channel, you know, for distortion, ’cause I like to use my Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi pedal for distortion. The Twin Amp’s got a second distortion channel and the Twin Reverb doesn’t. What should I buy?

fender pink paisley. 1969. out of this psychedelic era came this finish, which is actually adhesive-backed paper oversprayed with a polyester clear coat. exposesure to the air ages the polyester, except under the pickguard where the orignal pink colour holds true

        1. Background to Fender Paisley Telecaster
          Ed Horka

Wife has a re-issue of this tele – here’s a good summary from another web site:

Accomplished guitarist James Burton has worked with a variety of top musicians, including John Denver, Buffalo Springfield, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and Elvis Costello. It is, however, his stint with the other, more famous Elvis – Elvis Presley – that James Burton is most famous for.

          James and Elvis

Between 1969 and the Presley’s death in 1977, Burton was the King’s number one axeman, playing on numerous tours and records.

In 1969, Fender gave him a gift of a brand new Pink Paisley Telecaster®. Burton explains: "Chuck Widener [former vice-president] of Fender® called and said, ‘I have a guitar here that’s you.’ And I said, ‘Really? It’s got my picture on it, huh?’ He said, ‘Well, no, not exactly, but I think you’d like to have one.’ So I went down to Fender® and picked it up and played it. It just felt great, and I knew that was it."

Asked what the King’s reaction to his flamboyant new guitar was, Burton recalls, "I took it to Vegas, but I played my original Tele® for two weeks. Finally, I got up enough nerve to bring that pink paisley out. I was like, ‘Man, what’s Elvis going to say if he sees this guitar on stage?’ So I took it out and he came over to me. ‘ Johnny B. Goode ,’ he says, and I kick it off. He went out and was singing, then I played the solo, and he turned around and did a double-take when the lights hit me and that guitar. After the show, he came up to me and he said, ‘Man, where did you get that guitar?’ I said, ‘Well, I was worried about playing it because it’s a little bright.’ But he liked it and that was that."

          Some Changes

Burton has had some small modifications made. "The front pickup is stock, but the back pickup is a dual winding that Red Rhodes did for me," he explains. "I was looking for just a boost, but not necessarily a change in the sound of the guitar."

          Resting Place

Despite owning well over 150 guitars, the pink Tele® remained his favourite studio instrument until it was replaced with a black and gold Paisley model. The original Pink axe now resides in the Elvis Presley collection at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

The James Burton Telecaster® and James Burton Standard Telecaster® are available through your local Fender authorised dealer.

  12. Is the Standard Strat any good, for a beginner?
    Jimi O' Hendricson

Well is it. Whats it like sound wise and what is the difference between a strat and a tele? Also which is better maple or rosewood? Any answers greatly appreciated.

      1. Re: Is the Standard Strat any good, for a beginner?
        Cartaya

: My first guitar was fender standard strat. Not only is a good beginers guitar, but also works well for those with a few years of experience. The quality is much better that a squire, which is also made by fender, is not to steep in price. Whether you want to buy a strat or tele is personal choice, i prefer a strat.

I Perfer the strat, better controls, more comfortable to play because it has more contored surfaces and more flexible pickups.

And for god sakes BUY THE AMERICAN STRAT, it is simply not worth saaving a couple hundered to go with a mexican "Tacocaster" or a "Japcaster" = ) the tone of the american strat justifies its price plus its a better value in the long run.

I personally own a Blackie, That used to belong to Eric Clapton. Best dang guitar i have ever played, beter than most production claptons and it has an all maple neck.

Heres the differences in the fretboards, they all have their own pros and cons.

Maple. Solid, one piece, truss is put in though the back of the neck, this maakes for a more solid sound. the maple neck has less midrange and more trebble, it has a more nasaly sound. The downside is that the maple neck has a clearcoat many dont like and the finish wears and that makes wear marks that you will either love because it adds charater or hate because it looks dirty, my personal choice because it brings out the single coil sound the best and is solid as a rock.

Rosewood. Truss is put in behind the fretboard on this guitar like any other guitar, which changes not only the harmonic properties, but also the notes sound looser and warmer with alot more mid. Erics fret trick does not work on the rosewood fretboard or the ebony fretboard. Also, for some reason, the guitar feels less "solid" with the rosewood fretboard.

Ebony Yes there are Strats out there with ebony fretboards,
        * the old strat ultra has an ebony fretboard
        * The old jeff beck model before they sadly axed the lace sensors on every guitar but the Buddy Guy Signature series.

It sounds alot like the maple fretboard but even tighter, with slightly midrange and more sustain. But for the beginer, dont even worry about the ebony fretboard unless you have 1200-1600 bux lying around = )

The nice thing about the strat is once you have a decent one, you’ll always have it, they are rugid as hell and you could have em for decades and never hate em. I HIGHLY recommend going on EBAY and looking for a strat delux or strat ultra, throw a wilkinson locking brige on that and you have one hell of a package for 600-750 and ALOT more bang for the buck. Those Lace Sensors are worth it along with the stability of locking tuners and a better finish

at any rate good luck to ya

      1. Re: Value of a '79 strat

I completely disagree. A black 1979 strat is worth maybe $800 in excellent condition. While a "mint" one is worth more ("mint" meaning absolutely no wear, scratches, dents, etc), you’d be hard pressed to find a buyer at $3000.

Check gbase.com, plug in 1979 stratocaster, and see what the dealers are selling them for, understanding that their prices are generally a bit negotiable.

I am trying to find out what a 1965 Fender Stratocaster is worth. It is in perfect condition – everything is original on it. Sunburst finish. Hardshell original case. Has maybe 40 hours total playing time on it.

      Hugh

You must mean a ’65 re-issue. How would you know it only has forty hours playing time on it unless you owned it since 1965. If it the real thing, it’s worth around $6000.

  19. Fender DG-14S, Good Choice????????
    micah

i am considering buying a Fender DG-14S. i have played it and it sounds great, but that’s in the store in their acoustically wonderful practice room. can anyone give me the low down on this guitar? it seems hard to believe that a guitar that sounds that good would cost so little. thanks in advance.

  20. Limited Edition Stratocaster
    Tord Westlund

I have two Limited Edition Stratocasters -95 or -96 (N5). They have coloured headstocks (bodycolour). The red one is a Candy Apple Red with mapleneck but I also have a dark green metallic with a rosewood neck. Can anyone tell me the name of that green colour and how many "limited" they made? Was there anything more "special" with them?

I believe the green one is called Caribbean green or something to the like. The pickups are Texas fat types. Don’t know the production run. I just bought a candy-apple red one!!

  21. Stratocaster or Telecaster ?
    Amir

I can’t understand the difference between Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster.
    What is the difference.
Telecaster seems to me like an ugly peace of wood.
and why do some player choose to perform sometimes with their telecasters and in othertimes with their stratocaster

    Rich

I just purchased this guitar at a pawn shop with hardshell case for $250. It is in excellent condition. Did I get a good deal? What does this guitar usually go for ? Thanks.

I just purchased this guitar via private sale for about the same price as you, so I guess the price is right … In any case, it plays great and sounds great amplified or unplugged, that makes it worth alot!

  23. Do Pre-CBS pickups have serial numbers?
    Mark Mastroianni

I have a ’68 Strat that I bought in ’82. The pots were switched when I bought it, and I was recently trying to date the pickups, but I realize now that they’re NOT the gray bobbin type from the late 60’s. They have black bobbins, a waxey coating, cloth wiring, surgical tube mounts instead of springs, and staggered pole pieces consistent with the ’56 – ’64 pickups. Does anyone know if the old black bobbin pickups had any type of numbering or intials on them, because these DON’T.

    THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!

    1. Re: Do Pre-CBS pickups have serial numbers?
      RW

No, these pickups are not generally dated or identified. You can compare the winding wire and general details by consulting a reference book on Strats. A reputable vintage dealer can also tell you if they look like originals.

I know nothing about guitars. All I know is I have a Fender Coronado XII and it needs a little repair. I have to get it restrung and one of the bridges (?) need fixing. Does anyone know anything about them? Is there any where on the web that I can look up info through a serial number. If anyone knows anything at all please email me at [email protected]. I want to bring it in for repair asap but I’m going out of town for a while, if you could respond soon I’d appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any help!

  25. Fender Mustang?
    A Badr

I have had a black electric guitar left to me, eith a "mustang" motif on the top – along with the picture of a prancing horse. I was also left with a fender amp – I was wondering if the guitar could possibly a fender? The Head is angular, nout rounded and the guitar is black, witha a black finger board.

  26. wiring on a telecaster
    Matt Mason

Help..I’m rewiring A Tele and have tried to attach the 3 way switch and am only getting bridge pick up and bridge and neck but no neck on its own. I’m not so good at this stuff. Any Ideas. The switch has a configuration of 3 terminals on the left and the same on the right with one alone smack bang in the middle. I want the three choices of course. I have a diagram to follow but its not the same switch, so something is awry. If the telecaster god please e mail me soon I promise to eat all my greens.

        Anyway…I digress.
I am in the UK and have a very good condition Montara. I’m looking to sell so I can buy a Martin and co guitar. The problem is that it is so hard to find a true value of the Fender Montara as they are rare and nothing much about them on the internet….apart from this very old thread.
I have considered selling to Cash Converter but know I will get very little for it there. There are never any for sale on eBay either due to their rarity.

      3. Fender Montara Flame Maple
        Skyhawkim

Anyone still interested in buying one of these? I have the coveted flame maple that I received as a gift a long time ago. The binding and tuners look a bit old, there are some scuffs and 1 small dent (like 1/4 inch) nothing major. Finish is still sweet and glossy. Freeware is still good though may need new ones in a couple years if you’re a heavy player. The tone has really become great over the years. I haven’t played it very much since the frets are bit too wide for me. A local buyer would be great in Socal.

      7. Fender Montara
        Anonymous

I haved a Fender Montara for sale. It is the Amber Flamed Maple color. The guitar is in near PRESTINE condition. ONLY a few micro scratches in the back barely visable and only in the clear coat…not into the wood. The guitar has just been set up professionally and a bone saddle was installed. This really brought out the brightness of the guitar. The mop inlays are all intact…the rosette is perfect as well as the body binding. As you know this guitar is VERY rare, and this color is by far the prettiest and most sought after. The luthier who set it up valued it at $675 because it is rare…with the new saddle it sounds awesome and plays like butter…and its the most popular color. It comes with a HSC. Contact me if interested. We can negotiate a comfortable price. Mark 720-231-8320
