Stratocaster or Telecaster ?

I can't understand the difference between Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster.
What is the difference.
Telecaster seems to me like an ugly peace of wood.
and why do some player choose to perform sometimes with their telecasters and in othertimes with their stratocaster
