I don’t know if you already found one, but…Check out this site: http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/
They have just about everything. (Once you go to the Twin Reverb page, make sure you look at the very bottom for the link to the schematic.

      your Twin reverb too.

  1. SRV Strat Dating
    Michael W.

I need help dating an SRV strat. The serial number has the SE9 + 5 digits listed. I researched the net and found that a signature series with this number should be a 1989 model but I am pretty sure that the SRV strats did not come out until a couple years later. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I just bought a ’61 at an average retail music store for $450–the finish is completely chewed here and there, but otherwise in good shape.

I sold an early 80’s (made in Japan) Esprit Elite in mint condition for $750 about 2 years ago. I’m not sure what the would bring today.

: What is an early to mid 80’s Fender Esprit worth?
The Fender Esprit was only made in 1984 and there were 3 models. Standard, Elite and Ultra.
The value is hard to say. I don’t know how many copies were made of each model.
Would be fun to know. I have a sunburst standard in almost mint condition.
I also have a Fender Flame in sunburst. It is also from 1984 and has a slight smaller body.

Bought one in 1991 for £350 sold it 1999 for £500. Regretted it and searched for one in 2004. very rare now. Settled for £800 but was asked for £1500 by one punter. £800 is about right considering its quality , history and pedigree and the quirky nature.

  4. 50th Anniversary strats
    Tom Davies

I’m confused – I thought that Fenders 50th Anniv strats were produced in 1996 with only 1250 (ish?) made, all with sunburst finish, gold parts, 50 plate on neck bolts etc. My buddy has produced a cream one (no gold but with a metal 50th badge inset on back of headstock) and checking the US adverts ,lots of others appear in lists of all colours. Was there lots of colours or a second "less exclusive" run or am i just hopelessly confused ?
    Tom

    1. Re: 50th Anniversary strats
      Andy

I happened to work at a Fender dealer in 1996. Here is the answer you seek:

There were 2500 50th Anniversary American Strats produced in 1996. They have the gold hardware you mentioned, etc., and are conspicuously numbered on the neckplate as "#### of 2500"; likewise, 1250 similar Teles were produced, numbered the same way. These are the "true" anniversary models.

Pratically every other guitar Fender produced in 1996, including Squiers, Standard Series, and Americans, displayed the metallic sticker commemorating Fender’s 50th anniversary. There is nothing special about these guitars, other than the fact that they were made in 1996, the year that Fender turned 50.

Many people advertise "50th Anniversary Strat/Tele" on their guitars, but unless it is the American, gold hardware, numbered neckplate version, it "ain’t the real deal". I know, I was lucky enough to find one, which is neatly tucked away until their 100th anniversary in 2046!

      Take Care,

      Andy

    2. Re: 50th Anniversary strats
      Winston Arblaster

I can’t really help you any, but I was wondering the same thing. I purchased an american made Strat on ebay. It has the 50th anniversary gold sticker on the back of the headstock, but everything else is absolutely normal. It has a sunburst finish and the serial number’s first digits are N5 would this not mean it was made in ’95 rather than ’96. The sticker is in perfect condition, so I don’t think any body peeled it off something and stuck it on there to make me pay more.

I know the 50th anniversary limited editions have gold parts. Were there 50th anniversary ones produced with nothing special, but a nifty sticker?

  6. telecaster
    beth jones

Rumor? My father had a fender telecaster with an extremely low serial number on it. He purchased it around the San Francisco area in the early 50’s. He said it was made for a guy in the symphony that needed an extra long neck and requested it be made from fender. The guitar was not ready when the guy needed it so he purchased another guitar. My father said he was able to buy this one at a great price. He was tall (6’4") so he really liked the extra long neck. Anybody with any info regarding early serial numbers?

    1. Re: telecaster
      Serial numbers.

I used to buy guitars with the sole purpose of following them for a hundred miles, stamping on it’s proposterously minute head and shagging the neck hole with my intensely erect lubed shaft. YES!

      Hi all,
I recently bought a Fender Prodigy from a friend of mine. This is my first guitar although i have been playing bass for a few years. It has been well used but also well cared for. Just the other day, I had a wire come loose in the cord plug thing. It produced an annoying buzzing sound, so it prompted me to open it up. Upon taking the pickguard off, I discovered that the ground wire (leading through the body) had also come off. I do not have the manual, so, consequently, I do not have a wiring diagram. If anyone could tell me where the ground wire (its black) attaches to, or can send me a wiring diagram (it can be in just about any file format you can think of), I would be very appreciative.
      Thanks again
      Matt

hi. i have a ’93 American Fender Prodigy. it has a rosewood fretboard, basswood body(black), 2 single coils, 1 bridge humbucker, 1 volume, 1 tone, 3-ply pick guard(b/w/b). it has a great sound and feels great. i love everything about the guitar, except for one thing: the input jack it on the pick guard,so i am always nervous that i’ll step on the chord and break something. other than that, its a perfect guitar(i just wish i had bought one with a maple fretboard).

  11. Fender Twin
    Russell Dawson

I have been told that you can remove two of the power tubes from a Twin to lower the output to 65 watts. I have also been told ‘not’ to remove two of the power tubes. The Twin is far too loud for the gigs I play. So, playing with the volume barely on 3, the amp is massively under used. Please can someone tell me what the right procedure is for reducing the power from 100 watts to around 60. I don’t want to sell the amp as its a vintage and I like it too much. Please, only those techs who know what they are talking about. Thanks RD.

Well, I’m not a tech, but I’ve had a "The Twin" for ten years now. I still have the manual. Yes, you can take two tubes out of it to reduce the wattage. Your wattage will be 60/15 instead of 100/25. What I am talking about is the hi/lo switching on the front pannel. If you take the tubes out they must be the two middle tubes of the four. Then you must reset your impedance switch to half of what it was previously. My amp has two 8 ohm speakers in series making the total impedance 16 ohms and this is what I have the impedance switch set for normally. When I remove the two middle power tubes I set my impedance switch (on the back pannel) to 8 ohms. This is per instuctions from the manual. You do not have to re-bias when you do this. Your gonna find out how ever that even when you do this and even with your switch set on low, the amp is gonna still be loud. Not as over-bearingly loud as before, but still louder than any 15 watts I’ve ever heard. Man, this is one strong amp. I love it though. Remember, half the tubes, half the impedance. Something you might try is what I do. I run an Alesis Nanoverb through the effects loop. The Alesis unit has input and output volume knobs. I use these to regulate the pre-amp’s volume going to the main power tubes. This keeps the amp in playable limits for small venues and practice. I imagine any effect with a volume adjustment will work in much the same way and its safe to do this. I have’nt found the tone to suffer much from this either. Just for clarification, I want to emphasize that I am talking about what they call the "Evil Twin" or just "The Twin" and not a Twin Reverb. These are two different amps. Well, good luck. Don’t give up on it. It is one really great amp.

        1. Re: Fender Twin
          ManicMonkey3

This follow up is so late that I’ll probably never hear anything back. I also own a The Twin red knob amp. If you cut the speaker impedance switch from 16 to 8, should’t you rewire the speakers to run so they are consuming 8 ohms total instead of the series wiring they’d be in the default setting? Otherwise you’re pushing 16 ohm speakers with 8 ohms output- I’ve heard this can damage an amp. I barely know what I’m talking about and want to try this 2 tube configuration and I just want to get some pointers.

            Anonymous

I have a ’68 Fender Twin and was advised by a few amp techs that removing the two inner power tubes will do no damage to the amplifier. I have been running mine like this for four years now with no problems… it is indeed still loud, but breaks up at lower volumes like the Pro-reverb and other smaller wattage amps. Also, it is very comfortable to play in smaller venues with great tone… Keep smilin’

      Steve,

I have a Flame Ultra, the top of the three available models (Standard, Elite, Ultra) in pearl white finish, with a factory-installed Kahler tremolo. I was told when I called Fender that they put the Kahler trem on the last ones they made, trying to attract the rock players who were demanding Kahler and Rose trems. I’d be very interested in what that’s worth these days – I *never* see them listed at vintage shops.

Well you guys are not the only ones wondering…I think its a damn nice guitar…made in japan huh? didnt know that…all the parts on mine say fender on every last peace…mother of pearl embling…and a glossy black finish..no tremelo on mine tho…I wanna know how much worth too..but I would really like to know..which flame I got….hope its not the cheap one…or the bottom model..

        Tony Clark

        Steve and David,

I can’t believe I have found some people who have these guitars. I have a Standard in the two-tone sunburst that is in mint condition. I have replaced the pickups with DiMarzio’s (and plan to replace those with something else). I still have the original pickups, though… just in case the guitar is ever worth something. Since these were all Japanese made, I doubt they’ll ever command too much money in the Vintage market. I understand there was a fire in the US plant in the mid-80’s which forced all of these guitars to be made in Japan. This also caused a year-long delay in production, so by 1984, interest had died in America. That’s why these were only made for a couple of years and then resurrected by the Custom Shop.

I own a beautiful Fender El Rio in drop dead mint condition. These guitars were made in the early 70’s in the Fender Japan facility which was later moved to Mexico. Not many of these guitars are around. I have never seen another one. Mine is a beautiful flame with the original hard-shell case. If you or anyone else is interested in buying it I would be willing to let it go to a person that can appreciate a fine instrument such as the Fender El Rio for $1,350.00 plus shipping. I can send digital photos of this guitar to anyone interested. I accept Paypal and Billpoint for electronic funds transfer. I live in New Hampshire and would send the guitar via UPS ground or FedEx.

I purchased my Fender F-260S in February 1986 in a music shop in Mt. Vernon, WA. The guitar and the Martin hard shell case were 500.00. The guitar alone was listed at 435.00. The only addition to the guitar is an internal pickup mic. I love the tone and have spent countless hours playing a great instrument.

    1. Re: fender f-260 acoustic guitar quality?
      tim c

I bought my Fender 260S in 1987 when they were first introduced. I would call myself an accomplished guitar player (I used to teach in university to make money, and played in a couple of bands over the years). This Fender is still my main acoustic. It has been very good down through the years. tone is great. Intonnation is great. I’m going to keep this forever now…I’ve had it for almost 25 years and I’m going to pass it to my kids one day. I wouldn’t suggest this guitar is better than a nice Laravee, Taylor or Martin, but it is a very good guitar. The price is also good.

I just bought one in a small shop in Collingswood, NJ. The seller got it from an Estate sale.

I took it to my luthier and he told me the back and sides are Cambodian Rosewood. There is very little information about the wood on the internet, however, it is harder and easier to work with than Brazilian, EIRW or Madagascar rosewood. It is rare and now used in some high end handmade guitars.

My luthier said it would cost over $1,000 to make the same guitar today. He is replacing the nut and the saddle with bone. The original appears to be plastic.

He said that the bridge is the only weak part because it is probably maple painted black. If the bridge goes I will replace it with ebony. It is a great sounding guitar.

I just recently aquired a F-260S and I was curious about its worth and value. Do you think I should hold on to it or sell?

      1. Fender 260s
        Anonymous

I bought this back in about 90 with a hard case I think for 350. I had played a 3000 Taylor and I fell in love with it but coudln’t afford it. Unfortunately, it “ruined” me as I compared every other acoustic to the Taylor. Then I found this beauty. I bought it on the spot and this one, along with my Stratocasters and my 1957 Gibson archtop that belonged to my dad will be one I will hopefully die with. Great instrument.

      2. I’m looking at a Fender f-260s, quite good condition, tuning pegs are still gold (it wasn’t played very much, original owner has had it since 1988), hard case (with stickers on it). I’m looking at these olds posts putting value around $300, but it seems this is a quality and somewhat rare model. What is a fair price today? Thanks for any help.

      3. Fender F-260S
        Anonymous

I fished one of these out of the dumpster at Fender (with permission) and put duct tape across the cracked back in 1981. It still sounds and plays great after all these years.
I use it to learn songs, and for practicing. The intonation is nearly perfect, and its a joy to play. NO case, so it hangs on the wall, and I keep it polished at all times. Its a great addition to my collection.

      4. Fender F260S
        Art Dewan

I bought my 260S in 87 from a small guitar shop (still have the original receipt). Be careful if you’re buying one second hand. Unfortunately we live in world of photoshop and high quality printers which make the labels easy to fake. These guitars are very rare, if the price is anywhere south of a grand it’s either not a 260S or the seller has no idea what they have. The back and sides should be a dark and reddish tight grained Brazilian rosewood. Go to wood-database.com and you will see the difference. The name “Fender” written on the headstock should be mother of pearl not just white paint. The machine heads are gold plated although they may be worn by now. If all checks out so far just play it. If it sounds like a 2 to 3 grand Taylor or Martin if not better, you have gold.

I’ve had my Fender F-260S since I bought it new in 1987. I left a comment in this forum back in 2010. You’ll find the F-260S for sale on reverb.com for between $500 CAD and $670 CAD (about $400 to $600 U.S. dollar). I paid $600 CAD for mine back in 1987…so it’s held its value.

  24. How much is a 79 strat worth-lola's question
    JBrajkovich

The worth of a near vintage Fender is going to depend on several factors-originality of the components, condition and whether or not its a hardtail, particular color, etc. I purchased a 79 susnburst/trem version about two years ago in excellent condition with original case for $800. This was probably on the low side, given that it was a sunburst and in excellent condition.

in the blue book of guitars (it look like a price guide for guitars) a 1979 strat is listed at 550$ but it depends (you know if i could find a 1953 telecaster i would pay a lot for it no matter what the condition is.

I played an aluminum telecaster about three years ago-it was a swirl blue stain with a rosewood fingerboard. The sound was surprisingly like a standard tele. The hollow body (no f-holes) seems to have made up for the tone lost in not using wood. I wish I’d bought it as I suspect they will be highly sought after by collectors.
