The Jagmaster Zone

This is a great resource for Jagmaster fans and owners. This is a great and pretty rare guitar, which was only made by Fender for 2 years.

A little info for grunge fans. Kurt cobains guitar was a ’65 Jaguar with Duncan JB neck and Dimarzio HB3 bridge through a Boss DS1 (I own 1 they’re actually great pedals) And very high Quality Mesa Boogie Pres with other Power amps and 4×12 Marshall cabs, which were sometimes just dummies with the Preamp output going through a DI into the PA system. If you want his sound, a Jagmaster, Vista or standard shouldnt matter he used both scale length guitars, with those pickups through that set up should be getting close. DS1: distort full, tone half amp: treb 5, mid 2, bass 2

The jagmaster is already carried by the online music places like musiciansfriend.com. Local music shops usually have to special rder it though.

      Hi there

I was wondering what cash value you put on this guitar. I’m selling mine, but I don’t know what to ask for it.

I paid 299 for mine back in ’98. Was I ripped off?

      Scott

      Hey,
I have several older Jagmasters, and they are by far the nicest guitars I’ve ever played. As far as bring back the the sunburst — no idea. however a warning–I bought a newer model when they came out a year or two ago and it is ni where near the quality of the older models. Infact it was the biggest piece of crap that I could imagine. Personnally, I’d shop around at all the used music stores and find one that was made in 96 – 97. You’ll be happy you waited.

      Later!

  6. Jagmasters colours in the UK
    bullneck

There are 3 colours of the latest Squier Jagmaster available in the UK: silver sparkle, candy apple red, and montego black. I’ve played Jagmaster and really liked it as it was easy for a beginner such as myself to play and now I want to buy one. Just one problem, I hate the silver sparkle and thats the only version I have seen. anyone have any pictures or know where I can find any of the other two?
    cheers

I’m desperate to buy a Jagmaster in Sliver Sparkle in the UK. It’s extremely difficult to come across any Jagmaster here, let alone one in this colour! I’m a poor, poverty stricken student, so I’m looking to get one as near as the £200 mark as possible. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

      Racso

Jagmaters (but they could) don’t sound like NIRVANA most people don’t realize that kurt had heaps of modifications to his guitar and most of the time played through shitty amps and also used a Boss Ds-1 distortion pedals

  9. replacing the pick-ups
    Cam

I’ve had my Vista series Jagmaster for about five years and totaly love it. It’s seen a lot of gigs and it fair share of abuse and it still smokes! I’m thinking about changing the stock pick ups and was wondering if anyone had any recomendations?

    1. Re: replacing the pick-ups
      trevor

I have only changed the bridge pickup to a Seymour Duncan Parallel Axis Distortion humbucker and now the guitar really sings!!!!!! I had to make the holes in the pickguard bigger to accommodate the pickup (about an 1/8 of an inch) but it was totally worth it, especially when it is played through my new Brian May Vox amp with the Ebow!!!
I am planning on getting the Seymour Duncan Intruder for the neck pickup……’til then keep jamming!!!!

    2. Re: replacing the pick-ups
      Scott

I replaced mine with a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge position and a Dimarzio (Steve Vai Model) in the neck position. It is now the coolest guitar I have ever owned.

    3. Re: replacing the pick-ups
      Timhulio

I’ve messed about a fair bit with my Jagmaster over the last year.
I started by putting a dually red/silver lace sensor in the bridge position, but wasn’t entirely impressed by that, so replaced it with a dimarzio super distortion, which is much hotter and more to my tastes. I kept the neck humbucker stock for ages because it just sounded good, but eventually replaced it with a DiMarzio PAF which I initially liked, but decided it was a little too ‘muddy’ with distortion. Replaced that with a DiMarzio AirZone which works for me now. The super distortion is wired to a 3-way switch for series/parallel/split and the airzone is wired to a push-pull pot to split it.

    1. Re: looking for new Jagmaster
      Tim Webster

Yeah that’s the one I’ve got. It’s called ‘Montego Black’ or something similar, and has a bunch of little sparkly bits in the finish. Very nice, but just looks normal from a distance. Assuming you live somewhere in the civilised world, you can order one from your nearest guitar shop, and black ones come up for auction on ebay frequently if you want pictures of them. The wiring of these guitars is incredibly simple, so don’t buy a new one which will be identical or even inferiour, FIX THE ONE YOU’VE GOT! Or get a tech to do it. Ignoring the Les Paul comment.

    2. Re: This popular thread has been given its own page :... Josh
      Josh

Hi have an ’96 Candy Apple Red Jagmaster, but it broke. I was using it at a gig and at the end of the show i got carried away and a accidentlly hit it on the stage. Well something in the wiring when. I get no sound.. So i’m looking for a newer one. I want the all new all black Jagmaster. But i am still going to keep my red one. It has Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II Humbuckers in them, so i’m going to put them in the new along with the japanese neck which have a better feel. They are nice guitars that stay and tune and have a nice simple setup. Its fender’s version of a les paul. I can’t seem to find any pictures of the new black jagmaster. If anyone finds one…let me know. thanks.

  10. Jagmaster with Lace Sensors
    Tim Webster

I plan to replace the stock bridge humbucker in my new Jagmaster with a Dually Red/Silver Lace Sensor pickup with the extra switch for single-coil selection. Has anyone else done something like this, and is it a good idea? Is the output any hotter than the stock pickups? I’m looking primarily for a good distorted tone with Big Muff/MXR Distortion +.

  11. Difference between Japanese Vista series and new Chinese reissues
    scott

I’m considering getting a Jagmaster (possibly from tradmusic.co.uk) but a few people have mentioned that the new Chinese reissues aren’t as good as the original vista series made in Japan.

I was told the newer JMs don’t have the jaguar’s short scale neck..

Could anyone add to this, maybe provide a comparison of the two versions?

    1. Re: Difference between Japanese Vista series and new Chinese reissues
      Chris

Right, its like this; theres a load of old tosh talked about guitars in the pages of magazines and on certain websites. Its all about one-upmanship and aspirationalism.
I have one of the new jagmasters and so does my son. Both came from different shops; my sons from Denmark Street, mine from Music Bay in Gravesend (good people…not like the majority of wanna-be failed rock stars inhabiting most music stores). They both are excellent, and I have no hesitation whatsoever is saying that they are better guitars than the "genuine" Fender Strat and Tele’s that I owned when gigging in the seventies.I recently tried both Mexican and Jap strat and the quality of workamanship was not as good as on the Chinese squires that I have tried (all models). This "anti-new-squir’s" thing is all about misinformed perceptions of how things are made in China, Taiwan, Korea..etc…and it is BULLSH*T!
MOST OF THESE COUNTRY’S HAVE A CONSIDERABLY BETTER STANDARD OF MANUFACTURE THAN IN THE WEST!
So I say go ahead and get yourself a mega bargain with one of the new Jags. They play and sound great!

    2. Re: Difference between Japanese Vista series and new Chinese reissues
      Tim Webster

Haven’t tried the original vista series Jagmaster, but I tried a new one (for a considerable length of time) in Denmark Steet whilst shopping about for a different guitar. I can assure you the quality of construction is excellent, and the tone is great (bit like my SG, actually) also the stock pickups were surprisingly good.

As far as I’m aware, both versions have the normal, non-short-scale neck. Main differences seem to be colour options, with the vista series being available in assorted retro-looks (sunbursts, jazzmaster-style colours and tortoiseshell pickguard- but white pickups!) and the new series in 3 sparkle-effect colours (of which the black, with black pickguard looks the most cool).

Essentially, they’re both Squiers, and production standards in both factories are presumably pretty good. So it seems silly to spend up to £100 more on a 4-year old Vista Series when you can just buy a new one.

      1. Re: Difference between Japanese Vista series and new Chinese reissues
        Scott

I have owned both the old mid 1990’s Jagmaster and a new Jagmaster and can honestly say the old ones are much nicer guitars. My mid-90’s Jagmasters (I have two) are by far some of the nicest guitars I have played—including my friends $4000
        PRS.

The fit and finish of the mid-90’s Jagmasters is just far superior compared to the newer ones—actually, exactly the same as any new Jagu
        r.

The difference seems to be mostly in the neck—as the old ones have a standard gloss finish, smooth neck lines, and great fretting. The new ones have a non-gloss finish (seems cheap), the neck is thicker, and the frets are sharper on the edges—over all just not impres
        ed.

For anyone looking to pick up a Jagmaster, I would highly suggest looking for the mid-90’s vista series. It’s well worth it. They are by far my most favorite guitar to play. As for the new ones—don’t waste your money. They are much cheaper and just don’t stand up to most other fender products.

        1. Re: Difference between Japanese Vista series and new Chinese reissues
          Lloyd

I went to My local Music store and they had a Vista series Jagmaster New/old stock from the 1990’s.
It was never owned and they had it in the back room still in the box it shipped in, I put it on layaway and can’t wait to pick it up.

      2. Re: Difference between Japanese Vista series and new Chinese reissues
        Jim

I recently tried out one of the new Jagmasters and was quite unimpressed. Granted, it was a demo guitar, but the pickguard had scrapes going every which way all over it, the fretboard felt very cheap and the overall craftsmanship seemed to be lacking. I also noticed that the wire used to wind the pickups was visible on one and the pickups seem to have been forced into the pickguard.

Now, to be fair, the guitar played well and sounded good through the Marshall I was using. I am going to soon buy one, but I’d like to try one of the old Vistas first. And even if I buy a new one, I’d almost surely replace the pickups.

  12. Is the Squier Jag Master an entry level guitar?

What i want to know is if its suited for people who are just starting out on the guitar, or if someone who has been playing for a while would benefit from having one. Any help would be good. Thanks.

  14. Need Advice on Buying Jagmaster
    Rich

Hi, I’ve been playing guitar for almost a year and my first guitar is a complete piece of crap that’s good for learning but not too much else. I’ve been set on obtaining a Jazzmaster/Jaguar type sound, but I can’t afford either of them, so I figured a Squier Jagmaster would be an obvious choice… less than $300 and every bit as good sounding from what I’ve been led to understand. However if I buy this guitar expecting that Jazzmaster/Jag type sound, will I be disappointed or satisfied? I will probably just change the pick-ups to the single-coils used in jazzmasters, assuming this is possible… any help would be appreciated.

    1. Re: Need Advice on Buying Jagmaster
      Jason

If you’re looking for a jazzmaster/Jaguar sound, you will be disappointed. At the very least you need to change the pickups to 4-conductor humbuckers so you can split them into single-coils. I have my jagmaster set up to split the neck pickup into a single coil for sparkly clean tones. I have a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge position, and a SD ’59 in the neck. Swapping pickups is fun, if you have the time, money and skills to do it yourself.

  15. New Jagmaster
    Big D in Big D

Well I got Mine! Brand new silver metalflake, it is sharp! This thing is well made, I thought Squiers were the cheep line from Fender. Mine came out of the box in tune if that says anything. Well it made it from China to Texas and stayed in tune….Fit and finish is exceptional, this thing is beautiful….OK I’m talking about a $199.00 guitar, No I’m talking about a really nice and hard to find work that Fender is giving away at $199.00. This won’t last so if you can find one, get it. I think there trying the waters with this model. They know they can sell Strats and P-Basses but the Jagmaster is differant. Bargan basement cost and exceptional quality, won’t last.
Mine sounded so good I couldn’t put it down. Everything is in the right place, no more hitting the volume knob while strumming like on my Strat. It’s got a Strat neck which is exelent, rosewood finger board, Alder body which resonates hard while playing. This is a Big guitar, taller and wider than a Strat. Sounds good and loud while not plugged in, of course plugged in its very good, but a pickup change is in need for exelent. Can’t have everything for $199.00
This thing is very bold looking, kind of intimidating, has that, "you had better know what your doing if you pick it up" look. It’s all business, like a machine for music, the black on silver gives it a mechanical look……I love it!…..And no more horns!!!….I’m getting tired of horny guitars….I would have payed much more for this guitar just becuase I like it, who cares where its made the fact is, it’s a bargan that will either fade away due to cost or someone will make a name for it and it will be so expensive we will be looking for another bargan storybook guitar.

  16. How can i tell the difference
    Bob

Hey, I ordered A Candy Apple Red Jagmaster form this music store, but since I ordered it, I found out lots more, and if i’m not mistaken, arent there two ‘types’ of Jagmaster? Like the Vintage ones from the Vista series and now the newer ones. Doesnt one type have 22 frets compared to 21 frets? Is there a difference in value? How can i find out when it was made? Is anyone going to reply to this? Please?

      1. Re: How can i tell the difference
        Joe Petro

Here is the best description that I have been able to find. I recently purchased one of the Vista Series from 97 and I love the guitar:

Some people might be wondering why i categorized the Jagmaster as a Fender guitar, since it does bear a "Squier" decal on the headstock. To explain it as briefly as possible…the Jagmaster was part of Fender’s "Squier Vista" series which was introduced in ’96 and discontinued in ’98, most likely because of low sales. These guitars are basically Japanese made Fenders marketed under the Squier name. Fender may have given the consumer too much credit by assuming that they would recognize the value and quality of these guitars and that would override any preconceptions regarding the "Squier" name.

The Jagmaster was made just the same as any other Japanese Fender; namely the Jazzmaster and Jaguar reissues that were being produced there at the time. I hear that Fender has recently shifted all Japanese production to Mexico, which is unfortunate…personally, i think that Japanese Fenders are a better representation of craftsmanship and quality then the Mexican and U.S. models, so maybe i’m a little biased. But anyway, the Jagmaster:

The guitar features a Jazzmaster reissue body (made of basswood of course), a jaguar neck* (maple with a rosewood fretboard, 22 frets, 7.25" radius, vintage style tuners), 24" (Jaguar) scale length, a strat-style vibrato, 2 humbuckers, a 3 position toggle switch, and a volume and tone control. The switch and two control knobs are layed out as they are on a Jazzmaster. The Jagmaster was available in Vintage White, 3 Tone Sunburst, Candy Apple Red, Sonic Blue, and Black. The list price was $699.99.

*Fender did start making Jagmaster necks slightly different from Jaguar necks somewhere between January and July of ’97. The later model necks are a little thinner and feature a bullet type truss rod, with an odd chrome piece at the headstock rather than the typical wood-lined channel.

With as much as everyone complains about the electronics of Japanese made Fenders, the humbuckers on Jagmasters actually sound relatively good for being stock, and all the controls are smooth and quiet. I hope that the production of the Jagmaster has saved at least some Jaguars and Jazzmasters from being ripped open and modified, because the Jagmaster is basically an answer to the most common complaints about Jaguars and Jazzmasters: poor vibrato units, bad pickups, and an unnecessarily complicated switching system.

I own two Jagmasters (see the gear section) and have no complaints except that i wish Fender had opted to use a Jaguar body for these. Eventually i’ll probably buy a couple more. Now that they’ve been discontinued and few people realize that the Jagmaster is a really good guitar, they can be found for around $300, new or used.

In response to the difference of the Vista Series Jagmaster guitars versus the newer ones. In January,2001 I purchased a Silver Sparkle model to replace my 65′ Jazzmaster since I haven’t gotten around to cutting out a Jazzmaster body to modify. The first thing I did was disassemble the guitar and compare it with my Jazzmaster. First, the guitar was made in CHINA with 21 frets instead of 22, and the scale is longer. The neck is thinner and the bodies are not routed the same as the Jaguar or the Jazzmaster. The strat type tremolo is okay for lowering the pitch, but have to be adjusted to do pull-ups as I did with my 64′ Strat. The chinese versions are sold by Musicians Friend and The Guitar Center stores. The serial number and the Made in China is stamped on the backside of the peghead . As no schematic is available, I had to design my own. I contacted Fender here in Phoenix,Arizona to determine the year made as I have the original shipping box it came in. I hope this information is of some use to you and others with Jagmasters. I may invest in another with 22 frets and compare the Japanese versions as well. If I can be of further assistance, contact me at : [email protected]

            Sincerely, Kermit S. Payne

  17. Just purchased Vista Series Jagmaster - Want info
    Joe Petro

I recently purchased a new Jagmaster, Vista Series, with a made in Japan stamp on the back of the neck. The Fender inspection tag had a 1997 date on it. It is black with a tortoise pick guard. The guitar is new, still had protective coating on the pickguard. I bought it from a shop that had picked it up at an estate sale of a guitar shop owner. I payed $300 for it. Can anyone tell me how I can get some info on this guitar? Did I get a good deal? I can’t find it listed in any guitar, guides or websites.

    1. Re: Just purchased Vista Series Jagmaster - Want info
      Jason

You did fine on it….The price can range anywhere from $175 up to $400 depending on the color you have, and the condition it’s in. If it was brand new, you got a great deal. I have two Jagmasters, sunburst and vintage white. I paid $175 for the sunburst, and $225 for the white one. These are my favorite guitars out of my collection of 7. If you replace the tuners with some good vintage Fender tuners, and replace the stock pickups, you’ll really be stylin’.

    Lee Mattox

I bought my sunburst Jagmaster, knowing it was a Japanese model, not one from China. The Chinese models are only
available in Red, Black and Silver Sparkle. I have seen a blue one and wonder what others were available.

Hello, thanks for your Fender guitar site, I enjoyed
    reading about the Jagmasters.

I would like to invite you to check out a discussion

The jagmaster is usually hard to find in the uk, but you are able ask most guiter and music shops to put orders in for guitars, which will usually take two weeks due to waiting for the new shipments. If your not keen on waiting, the other option is to just flick through guitar mags, which will have ads for shops and their latest offers. I have seen the jagmaster featured in some of these ads in the past, and usually cost about £200- £250. Happy searching.

I got one via a Sound Control shop in Newcastle. They had to order it in for me but it came in ten days. Any chain music store should be able to order you one in.
Mine cost 249 cos its the silver sparkle but the black and red cost 239 I think.

I played one of the new jags and I thought it a sweet playing and sounding guitar. I also thought it was a real deal at $249.00.
