: I have just been given a kiso ‘grand’ suzuki classical guitar and was wondering the worth of it. It has the number 00806 printed on the sticker and model number is GA-120. does anyone know anything about its worth or how old it might be?

I have the excact same guitar, i’ve bought it in 1975 in Holland.
there is so little information and i would love to know more about it. What kind of wood it is made of etc.

I have a little information as I believe my wife’s father worked in the Kiso-Suzuki factory. He has told me that the KSuzuki factory only made 1000 before the factory was shut down before the war. Apparently the guitars were originally sold for roughly $2. Many americans bought them during WWII. Due to the lack of information about them, I would think that not many remain, let alone in their original condition. I think that it would be worth at least $600 now. I suggest you keep it as I imagine that its value will continue to increase.
      Good find. Lucky you.

Hi, i have the same guitar Ga-120 no. 80815 and what my classical teacher has told me is that the body of the guitar, back and sides are made of laminated wood wich gives it a low value. For the top, i am not sure but he says that is laminated wood to. Nevertheless this is a good guitar for students and beginner and because of its old age the sound is really great, however, because of the weak soud of the base strings, it would not sell well, it is estimated about 400$ can.
I recommend that you keep this guitar and use it because it is a great tool but not a lot of money.
Also it was made in the golden age of classical guitar in japan so it is pretty well made.

Is there some way to get some information about this guitar ? It’s still in origianl shape, used but in good condition 🙂

: I am looking for a date for this lovely guitar, any ideas? cheers

      Try: http://www.ariausa.com

I found this paragraph in the Archive section:

Dating Aria guitars is a mix of fair precision and historical triangulation. The early guitars did not contain serial numbers, so you have to go by the rough historical outlines here. There are no pot codes. In the mid-’70s serial numbers began to be used. At least for Aria guitars made by Matsumoku, the serial number contains the year of manufacture in the first one or two digits (Y##### or YY####). Thus, a guitar from 1979 might begin with 79####. One from 1981 might begin with 1#####. The scheme becomes less sure after 1987. Some Korean- made guitars use a serial number with year and week indicated in the first four digits (YYWW####). Thus 9628#### would be from the 28th week of 1996. However, this is not the case on all guitars, and some have serial numbers which are not date-coded.

: anyone know the quality of mangore made guitars, michael

I purchased a used over ebay, best sounding guitar I own out of 12 guitars, people comment on it’s sound from rooms away and its looks are very appealing it is a spruce with bolivian rosewood I have yet to match it at any price. Workmanship appears good, not the best, I have a yamaha with better overall finish but this has more eye appeal and the SOUND!!! did I mention the sound?

        :
I saw the commentary posted by Jason Chan… The response you got tells you nothing which means that he has never seen one let along touched or played one. I own several of the mangore guitars, mostly from woods that I acquired and sent to Renato. The guitars are incredible for the price. Workmanship is top notch, quick response, nice intonation, great sustain, belly in the basses, and cyrstalline trebles.

I would recommend these to anyone looking for a concert level guitar at a reasonable price. If you would like, I will send you pictures of my guitars.

My instructor, Mel Hallam (studied under Pepe Romero) also has a mangore Bolivian Rosewood/Cedar and was blown away by the guitar. He claims that it is as good as his $14,000 Jose Oribe. You can see a picture of Mel Hallam in the photo gallery on Jose Oribe’s site.

        Hope this helps.

i HAVE TO SAY ALSO What a bastard this man is. I sent money up front for a narrow necked classical guitar. It was going to be so special he said. a masterpiece he said. will do your mother proud he said.
This was a present from my departed Mother. He sent me a beautiful looking guitar, but did it have the narrow neck I ordered? No it did not. Its protective lacquer was peeling off the neck and the frets were absolutely appalling.i am about to check out the gold name tag to see what it’s made of. and I’m having a camera inside to check everything out.
Obviously Mr Bellucci had not checked on my order. I mean how could anyone who said that he was going to oversee the project miss the fact that he was sending a ‘normal necked’ classical guitar when it should have been a narrow acoustic style neck. I am going to chase this man up until i get justice. I’ll take a bloody army out there with me if necessary to get the revenge for all the money he has taken off people for doing a shitty job. A con man hiding in the jungle.
I wonder who he will get to respond to this letter to tell more lies about his operation. I hope you drop dead very shortly.

        2. Mangore/Bellucci guitars
          Theo, UK

I was so impressed with the photographs and professional presentation at Mangore.com that I paid £3500 for a Bellucci instrument. After waiting 2 months for it to be delivered, I took it out of its embossed leather case and proceeded to tune it up. This was a never-ending process. The intonation was appalling.

I took it to Matthew Bascetti, a respected ex-pat American luthier in Chester and he informed me that the frets were incorrectly positioned and that it would require major surgery to put right. He went on to observe that the excessively lacquered woods were not European spruce or Brazilian rosewood as described on the Mangore website and that the tuners were cheap Korean gold-coloured and not gold-plated as described. He added that the inside of the instrument was very crudely finished and that it would not surprise him if the instrument had been made in China rather than Paraguay. I was appalled.

After an exchange of email with Renato Bellucci, in which he became increasingly foul-mouthed and abusive, I resigned myself to the fact that I had been conned out of my hard-earned money for a piece of junk sold by this fraudster.

I have written this to, hopefully, warn anyone considering the purchase of a guitar from Mangore/Bellucci before becoming another of his victims. Matthew Bascetti fitted a compensated nut and saddle and amazingly got the intonation to around 95%. I gave the instrument to my teenage son.

Never, ever buy a guitar without comprehensively trying it out and comparing with your current instrument.

          Be happy,

          Theo

Hi I just read this. I just purchased an Aria A553 Flamenco guitar on ebay for a couple of hundred. It has a few little marks but what a beautiful sound It was made in 1972 solid spruce top and maple sides and back. When Aria first visited the U.S around 1964 it was dissapointing because his guitars were rejected. He returned home and proceeded to improve his Guitars so he improted the best timbers. The serial no of my Guitar is 34819. I realize I would have to pay a couple of thousand to get a better Flamenco Guitar.

Hi! I have an A553 withthe serial number 01697, and my parents bought it for me in summer 1970. It was my first guitar. As our serial numbers are nearby (with yours having been built earlier) you can be sure it was built in 1970 or maybe one or two years earlier.

      Greetings!

I have one Aria AC-7 concert guitar. It’s a great sounding guitar. Mine is serial number 4040 made in Japan. I use low tension Augustine Black strings. You can find this guitar for only $150, surprisingly cheap. Great versatility. Someone used mine to play some flamenco and it sounded great. I also do a lot of finger tapping on it. Pop rock acoustic songs sound quite decent even though it’s not a steel strings guitar. The timbre is well balanced, clear and sweet. Not heavy — light or medium weight I would say. That being said, I don’t know how to date the production of the guitar based on the serial number, but I bought mine in the late 90’s at the guitar shop.

Beautiful guitar in case. The finish is great the neck true and the sound is bright and rich. This guitar is for sale at the Charleston Outlet Mall in Laas Vegas, NV for $149.00 usd. I thought someone in this forum might be interested.

Sorry I took so long to respond. I have both guitars, and I like the action on the JM 20 better than the AST 50. It has a fuller sound, as well. Of course, being a spruce top, it takes a little longer to "warm up" while the cedar top does not "grow" in sound as much as the spruce top in the long run. I hope this is helpful, if not late.

HI, I have a p60 made in 1972. It is the guitar that I bought after a year of classical lessons as it sounded equal to many higher value ones in the guitar store in Washington DC. I am curious as to its value today. or how I might find out. Ultimately, I may want to sell it.

The YW1000 was one of the higher-end dreadnaught models of the K. Yairi YW line. It was either the 2nd or 3rd highest model depending upon when yours was produced. This was a popular Yairi guitar in the 1980s.

I bought a brand new Crestwood electric a few years ago at a music store in Chesterfield MI. One-A-Chord music store (they also have a website) on Gratiot between 22 and 23 mile road. He carries their whole line. I had there technician set it the action low and calibrate it a few weeks ago and I love it even more.

I love my guitar could not beat it for the price. It has a nice feel and good sound. Very well built. I was looking to buy the Fender Sqier and this guitar beat it hands down.

I know the distributor is in Detroit. They have been around for years. I did find this distributor which is in Madison Heights Michigan only sells to dealers. http://www.lpdmusic.com Hope this helps!!!

I have a Crestwood acoustic 6-string purchased new by me around 1970. model # 2025, serial # 711. It is in mint condition and has matured harmonically into an excellent instrument. I was told at the time of purchase that it was manufactured by Yamaha to be marketed under the Crestwood label. It was remarkably identical to a Yamaha model then being sold at twice the price. It is NOT in any way similar to the guitar currently marketed as Crestwood model # 2025.

I also have a Model 2025, Serial No. 426 flat-top, made in Japan and originally purchased by me around 1967 from a Saint Clair Shores, Michigan shop, now no longer in business. The guitar is still in amazingly good sound. Great with Martin Marquis strings. The top is a spruce with mahogany sides and back, black pick guard with a gold vine design in it. It looks very similar to the Gibson J-45. It still plays well but could use another set up. Strings are a little high at the neck. Time has a way of changing everything.
There is a comany in Madison Heights, Michigan ; LPD Music International that distributes the Crestwood, including it’s newest line of electrics, the "DIVA". You can maybe contact them at 32575 Industrial Drive, Madison Heights, MI 48071, 248-585-9630 and possibly get more historical info on your acoustic.
Me, I’ll just keep playing mine until they have to pry it from my cold, dead hands.

I live in California, but my friend was from Ohio and that’s where he bought it. Mine is a 2029. It would be great to know more about these guitars. Made in Japan…. and made very well. Mine is probably 30 years old now and has no issues at all. Very good sound. Excelent sustain and resonance. Very fine neck. easy to play as a good electric. Please… someone enlighten us about our Crestwoods!

I have a large Crestwood hollowbody. Two pickups, very nice and very nice sounding pickups. The model is 2036. It reminds me of a Gibson ES-350 or Super 400, or even a larger bodied ES-175. I live in Flint Mi which is close to the Detroit distributor. I picked it up at a garage sale a few years ago for $15!! I took it home and plugged it in and was quite surprised. It still has the Ping tuners on it that were there when I bought it.

            Helo Alan,

I also have a Crestwood 2029 and it sounds like the twin to your guitar. Same quilted maple back and sides, exquisite neck, low action, etc. I bought mine from the lead guitar player in my high school rock and roll band (I sang lead) in 1973 for $75. It was in South Haven, Michigan, so maybe they were distributed in the Midwest. Wish I too knew more about this great guitar – I still occasionaly gig with it. There are other Crestwood nameplates now out there, but I imgagine that the original Crestwood factory in Japan must have made guitars for someone like Gibson or Guild.

            The mystery continues . . .

            Good luck and good tunes.

Like the rest of you, I just bought a Crestwood acoustic guitar and wondered what the history might be. I found some general information about them at wikipedia. It seems they were manufactured by the Japanese company Matsumoku that made guitars for several different well known brands, including Gibson, Fender and Washburn. The Crestwood name is still around and is owned by Gibson/Epiphone as a low priced guitar for kids and beginners. The early Crestwoods were made by the Matsumoku Company sometime between 1950 and 1985 when the company went out of business.

I know that mine (a model 2024 / serial number 324) is at least 35 years old, as I bought it from a guy who owned it that long.

                I hope this helps.

My #2067 I have had since I bought at Guitar and Drum in Detroit in June 1970. The drummer in my band loves playing my Crestwood – he loves the sound and ease of this guitar. I never knew much about the guitar. I remember taking along a great guitar player with me to the store and he and the sales person raved about it for the $100 it ran.

I"ve had a Crestwood since 1970. Don’t play it much, but out of curiosity Googled it to see if anyone knew anything about it. It’s a model 2019, serial # 2. It always played well and sounded very good for an inexpensive guitar.

I can’t believe how underrated they have been over the years. Just had it set-up again a few months ago and it sounds like new. The neck is in perfect condition with low action and no string buzz.

It also has what I believe to be Humbucker pick-ups and a very different tremelo bar, maybe an Aria or who knows. I can’t find a serial number on it anywhere though. Can anyone tell me where I should look for a serial number so I can tell what year this guitar is? Thanks

If you know of someone that has a busted body but the neck is still good let me know. Otherwise, I will just have to carve one from scratch.

I have one – Crestwood label inside with hand-written number 2021. I bought it in 1965 at a small guitar shop in Detroit called "Pick and Strum" that was gone long ago. They had about 5 of them. Said they were samples made by Yamaha who was considering getting into the acoustic guitar business. Still plays beautifully after all these years.

I too, have a model 2066. There is no serial number, just a model number. It was given to me by my uncle in 1973. He was a professional studio musician in Nashville at the time. It sounds and play beautiful, so much so my friend wanted to trade me his Martin for it. So, I decided I wanted to learn more about my Crestwood. Anyone know the manufacturer or importer’s name or phone number?

Can anyone provide a definitive manufacture date? I’m guessing early 70’s based on style and dating the components but I’m looking for a more certain date based on an.

I am the proud recent 2nd owner of a model 2029 no serial #. It was purchased new in Trenton Mi in 1969 by a returning home Vietnam Vet. He paid 110.00, took 2 lessons and was done. So there it sat until now. He said I played it 35 or 40 years ago at his house shit I don’t remember I’ve been playing 40 years, had lots of guitars, and to me this thing is a solid well made guitar. He said I was the last person that played it, How Fuckin Cool !!! Everything is tight structurally, it looks brand new, Made in Japan sticker still on back of head stock. The only issue I can see is the binding. Top, bottom, and head stock, it’s not starting to separate or anything just yellowed and checked. Anyways he told me it’s Brazilian rosewood and it’s rare because they cut all that wood down. Did these things ever gain value? The fit and finish is great. new strings on sounds Kickass !!! I’m honored to have received this, I’m smiling you would be too if you heard it. Okay Whew!, Anybody with background or history on this would be very much appreciated.

just read thru some of this old thread – wow! I have a Crestwood 12 string #2024 – one of the few numbers I’ve not seen listed here. It’s in great shape, really plays well and sounds beautiful! It’s 1 of 3 vintage acoustics I have, and I too would like to find out more about it, if anyone out there has any info. I’m also amazed how many in this thread are in the Michigan area – I spent the first 27 years of my life in Flint (yes, I drank the water), but didn’t get this Crestwood until I moved to Arizona some 40 yrs ago. Any info is appreciated.

        John Peter

I bought my Crestwood 2029 acoustic at a music store in Dearborn Heights MI in 1973 or 1974 (don’t remember exactly) I learned to play on an old $50 Harmony and wanted a better guitar. I was immediately drawn to the all blond, (spruce top, quilted maple sides and maple neck) beauty hanging on the wall in the music store. I paid $200. The old guitar has stood up well through the years. It has a few dings on the front and one of the machine heads needs a little work but it still plays and sounds great. I don’t know much abut the history, but it’s good to see that their are a lot of other people who enjoy their Crestwoods.

He just gave it to me to sell in our upcoming yard sale. But when I strummed it, and heard its gorgeous tone, I thought I’d better check out what it’s worth today. May be way too good for a yard sale!?! Could you please let me know it’s value – it appears to be in excellent condition.

      9. Info on Crestwood Acoustic 2065 please?
        Margo

Hello I have a Crestwood Acoustic Guitar model #2065. I know nothing about it other than its condition, which isn’t the best:

It is a 6-string but 1 string is missing. There are many light surface scratches on the back and one long scratch on the front. It has 3 picks but they are pretty generic so probably worth nothing.

Can anyone please shoot me some numbers on a vague guess at the guitar’s worth, before I list it online somewhere? And maybe a creation year or history of this model, as I have googled the model and cannot find it anywhere.

Thanks for any info you all can give!

          Dr. Sixstring

This guitar was made in 1970, it is handmade with good, durable materials. Back in those days they were not trying to save money by cutting corners. Its made in Japan, and it was built for those who wished to have a high quality guitar at an affordable price. In good condition, the crestwood 6 string guitar is worth approximately $350.00 to $500.00 depending on whether or not the buyer realizes what he/she is buying. I should note that singer/songwriters Garth Brooks, Tom Hanks Senior, and Johnny Cash all learned to play the guitar by using a crestwood! So did Elvis Presley. According to records, Mr. Presley learned on a crestwood after breaking his first guitar. His first was a Taylor model #6768-5567/80350. This guitar was worth more than the crestwood, which could be purchased in 1970 for $150.00. If you have any questions about repair or restoration, please contact me at [email protected]! Any questions, just ask!

      15. Crestwood 12 String model number 2022
        Greg

I bought this Crestwood 12 String model number 2022 off of a friend in about 1994 or so. I also live in the Detroit area which seems to have a connection to these older Crestwoods. I would just say that this is one fantastic sounding, playing and looking guitar. Its sound is better then many many high end guitars I pick up at GC or Elderlys or whereever I may be around nicer guitars. I had a cousin who has a great collection of guitars and lives in Kentuky pick it up. He was blown away by it. I used to tell him that was my main guitar, could tell he was skeptical about it. That was until he picked it up and started playing it. I actually have it strung as a 6 string. I’ve played it like that for all these years. The guy who sold it to me made me promise him if I ever decided to get rid of it that I sell it back to him. I wanted a 12 sting at the time. He had two, an ovation and this Crestwood. I wanted the ovation but he decided he didn’t want to part with that one because he payed so much more for it. But he told me he loved that Crestwood more. He was just in need of money at the time, but I could tell his heart was not into parting ways with it. I would love to know more about these wonderful old Crestwoods made in Japan. Were they only distributed in the midwest? Seems that is a connection everybodys story has in common. Anyway I’m glad I’m one of the people wondering about this awesome guitar I have.

        1. Crestwood 12 String model number 2025
          jim Toreky

I bought this Crestwood 12 String model number 2025 from a pawn shop back in the 70’s in Cleveland Ohio for $85.00 with the case, just pulled it out of the closet I did use it in a couple gigs during my Disco days playing in a band, it sounded great. Going to clean it up might play out this year I hope and will use it again. I was going to sell it but not sure I like the sound, the action is a little high but its not bad.

i still have my first electric guitar. i bout it in 1979, in Michigan. It looks very much like an Ibanez Custom agent. It’s still in very good condition, though it mostly just hangs on my wall as decoration. Any information on this and its value would be greatly appreciated. I also have a my first amp, a small wooden cabinet. The brand is “ROCK AMP”. any info on that would be cool too.

      17. Crestwood acoustic guitar, model# 2069
        Adam Deakin

I have an acoustic model #2069, work has been done on it, just cleaning and bridge replacement, it’s my fathers, but i take care of it for him, he still plays it occasionally, and lets me play it. this guitar is pretty nice shape, he knows his brother bought it new in the 1970’s, sorry i can’t be anymore specific:/ i’m assuming early 70’s… 72-74. it was given to my father after years of not being touched, sitting in its case. the guitar shows it’s age though, the frets haven’t been replaced, so they are very worn, but hey, that means better acting on the neck! the action on this guitar is great, the tuners could use some lube, i think i’m going to do that soon. the fretboard has been restored and cleaned very nicely. there are stress cracks in the clear coat along the back, nothing really bad, just a line. happens with age:/ the guitar’s a sunburst color, very nice actually, definitely eye candy. large black pickguard with a floral design on it. it has gibson style crown inlays, and the inlay on the first fret. 20 fret, can’t tell you the scale, or length of the fretboard:/ i hope the other owners of these guitars appreciate them as much as i love this one. I don’t care what name’s on the headstock, this is a remarkable guitar! the tone is beautiful, and the guitar is pure fun to play. the case my father has for this guitar is a VERY heavy-duty Gibson case, plush-lined, hardshell, keylock. and the guitar fits absolutely perfectly, does anyone know what model Gibson this guitar was designed after? I too live in the metro detroit area, and this was where the guitar was originally purchased. i have some HQ pictures of this guitar here…. http://s413.photobucket.com/albums/pp213/AJDeakin/Crestwood%20Guitar/

      18. Crestwood Acoustic Guitar
        Frank Joyner

This is an update on a previous comment I sent in 2008 on my Crestwood Model 2067. After a lot of looking inside the guitar I have found what appears to be a serial number of 614 with something else in front of it but can’t make it out. The guitar has mahogany back and sides with a book matched spruce top. I purchased it new in 1972 not 1970. It could have sat in the music store for awhile and may be older.
It is still a great guitar and has never been worked on.

        1. Crestwood Acoustic Guitar
          ramsey

I purchased a Crestwood acoustic model 2069 from a guy on craigslist for 250.00 He claims he paid 175.00 for it in 1973. All I know is he bought a 3000.00 Gibson and almost cried when I walked off with it. My opinion is this Crestwood has just as beautiful of a sound if not better than the Gibson. At one time they made Gibson from my understanding and was contracted to japan and this was their very own version of the Epiphone and Gibson. We played the guitars together and if you were blindfolded you’d think it was a 3000.00 guitar.. I’m happy! If it’s old Jam it out! New guitars are over priced and suck!! Just ask the guy that I walked off with his baby and he knew it!

I have an Aria A575. My parents bought it for me in 1988/89, it was second hand, but like new. I still have it and I really love the sound, it compliments my style of playing. I haven’t been able to find out any information about this model at all. No idea when it was manufactured or whether it was one of the higher models or not. It would be great to get more info about it

I have 2 A585’s and have seen info on this and other Aria models. Does anyone have a clue on which model was the best, was higher the number better the guitar. Would anyone have any info on an Aria A575 Classical.

      1. Aria 575
        Anonymous

Last year my girl friend found an Aria A575 in the bulky waste of the neighbour. I had to replace the mechanics and strings et voilà a nice guitar. THe only information I have is what stands on the sticker inside the body: Aria A575, made in Japan, no serial number. My sister owns an Aria A585 which she bought in a second hand shop. I prefer the sound of the A575 , it seems to be more volimous with more warmth. Top seem to be spruce, back and sides mahogany, neck nato, fretboard rosewood. The A 585 seems to have a brighter, more crisp sound.

  14. Kohno Professional-J VS Imai Handmade
    Tom

I am considering a Kohno Professional-J which I think sounds best in its price range (spruce top and cocoboro sides & back). Then I saw a handmade guitar by Yuishi Imai and was blown away (Brazilian back & sides with spruce top). Has anyone compared the sound between the two? Given the Imai is slightly more expensive, is it worth stretching a bit and go for it? I have not played the Imai btw. Thanks for any inputs!

The other is a 6 string, done in a black chinese laqure with a white dove, pink roses and green leaves on the pick guard, with rose wood fret board model no. W 65 BK. can you help me estimate the worth of this guitar? i aquired it the other day. Unfortunatly some radical teens have defaced the front of the body, and it has be exposed a little to the elements, otherwise it is in okay condition.one side of the tuning heads are broken.

: : : I have owned a Matsuoka classical guitar since about 1980. Like yours there is very little information on the label.
      : : : It says " RYOJO MATUSOKA – Luthier.
: : : There is nothing where it says Model No. but for the serial number mine says 50… nothing else.
: : : My pals at Coyles Music in Richboro told me that the sides and back are laminated rosewood. The top is obviously solid spruce.
: : : I paid about $110.00 dollars for it in 1980 from a pawn shop in West Philly including the hardshell case. I can’t complain. It sounds great.
: : : It has a huge amount of projection.
: : : Does anyone have any idea how much it could be worth.
      : : : Ron

It could be worth anything between $2 to $100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000. if you can’t count the zeros, its a good price
