l found a guitar in a second hand store and after playing same realized it was a real gem but l can find no reference anywhere as to who made it and along with another gem l’ve found i.e. a mann steel string acoustic.. the chowa has a one piece spruce top which leads me to believe, (along with the workmanship) that it is a fine guitar. l would like to know who made these guitars and their vintage because they (the chowa) is at least 40-50 years old and the mann at least 20+ years old. No one has any info on these items, need help.

Here is a bit of information I found while searching for information about my Aria (Ariana) A570 Classical Guitar, which you Aria owners may find beneficial.
By the way, I still don’t the actual age of mine.

In the mid 70’s, serial numbers began to be used. At least for Aria guitars, made by Matsumoku, the serial number contains the year of manufacture in the first 2 digits, thus a guitar from 1979 would have a serial number, such as 79####. The manufacturing of Aria guitars were subcontracted out to Matsumoku from 1964 to 1986. Rumor has it, although I can’t find confirmation, that the Indonesian factory was thought to be to be an Indonesian "slave" factory).

If anyone has information on the age of the A570, I’d appreciate it.
My A570 sounds better than my Yahama C70.

I have a Aria AC – 15 but has no serial number, but there is a number stamped inside the sound hole against the upper bout. The number is 06766015. There is only one position marker on the top edge of the guitar between the 7th and 8th fret. 8. Arai Acoustic Guitar
        Rob

I bought my 1st guitar ‘way back in the early 1970’s. I still recall that I paid a whopping $70 CAD for it!! I played it forever and when my son was a toddler, he reached in with his little hand and peeled off the label. I thought that label was gone forever but I must have realised it’s importance because I came across it today sorting through some old papers!! (My son is now 45!!) Now that I know the model and serial number, is my guitar worth anything more than it’s sentimental value? It is Serial number 1142290 and the model number is Aria 6810. Can someone enlighten me about it using this information?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

          Hello Rob,
          maybe this will help you:
          ttps://ourpastimes.com/how-to-date-an-aria-guitar-12205874.html
Determine whether your guitar’s first two digits are 81 or higher. If the digits are 81 or higher, you can likely pinpoint the week the guitar was made. Guitars in this era included the year and week of manufacture as the first four digits. For example, a guitar made in the 10th week of 1988 would have the first four digits of 8810

      12. Dating Aria Guitar
        Dave

        Hi folks

Another one of many requests for dating an Aria Guitar, so apologies in advance.

I have acquired a Classical Aria Guitar, from what I can tell from the aged mucky label, it appears to be
Model Number A551. This is made in Japan, under Tatsuno.
The serial number only contains the number 1
Inside the guitar at the end of the neck, there is a date printed/marked 53.2.1
There is no date/stamp on the headstock, like others I have seen.

I had a passing thought, could it possibly be a prototype before these guitars where commercially released, around 4 years later? The date seems to coincide when this trio got together. I can only go off what limited information I could find, including forums/threads such as this.
I can send some pictures, if it would help in any form

        Many thanks
        Dave

      13. Old Guitar
        JimN Tennessee

My son gave me a fantastic looking old acoustic guitar that he found at a yard sale. It has no name on it and only has the numbers 50.8 18 in black on the block in the sound hole. No one has been able to tell me what this guitar brand is as that number on the block is the only markings. I first thought, as did a lot of other people, that it was an old Gibson as it has the “open book headstock.” It has an adjustable bridge. The original tuners have been replaced. The binding and markings look like an old Gibson. But one detail kept throwing the Gibson people, and me, off. This guitar has double dots at the 5th fret as well as the normal 12th fret. I have poured over images online for many hours. I finally found an old Aria with the open book headstock, copied after Gibson. That led me to look over images of old Arias. Just tonight I found two online with the double dots at the 5th frets. All that leads to this question, does anyone have any idea what year or model would have been assembled with the block marked as 50.8 18? Thanks

      14. I have an ARIA 570. no serial number. The right age is difficult. She is my mother’s guitar. She is at least from 1974. This was an average good guitar at the time. But unfortunately she can’t ask for more information from her. She is now watching from above. It was her jewel. she sounds very beautiful.

      15. Aria serial number
        Reggie

I have a Aria single cut Les Pauls style guitar.I would like to know how to read the serial number as for manufacturing date. The s/n on the back of the head stock is 516080049.

        1. I am in the same boat. I have a left handed Aria Les Paul serial 517100098. I read somewhere that the first 4 digits are the week and year they were manufactured, meaning mine would be week 51 of 1971, and yours would be week 51 of 1960. Unsure how true this is. I have written to Aria regarding this 3 times now, but only seem to get an automated response telling me they will get in touch

I have an Aria guitar and all details I can see are:
Aria CONCERT GUITAR, Serial Number: 3401, Model: AC 7 (or 17 – it’s unclear), MADE IN JAPAN.
How can I know when it was made and its value?

        1. that’s a low end one. 100 to 200 depending on condition. AC 50 and higher are the beginning g of mass production Aria’s of any value.

          1. Aria AC 80

I have a Aria AC 80 (classic nylon string) without any serialnumber. As I understand its made before mid 70, but is it a low, mid or hight end guitar. For a “perfect” condition guitar, how much is it worth-ish.

      31. I have an Aria A583 classical guitar. No serial number is listed but I found the number 46226 stamped on the heel of the guitar. It was old when it was given to me. Still sounds great. Would like to know when it was mafe.

      32. Aria guitar serial number 147
        Jimmy Memel

For those who have been researching the Aria serial number puzzle this may add to the conundrum. While trawling the internet I came across an Aria with the same serial number as mine. I bought my guitar new from a music shop between 1970 to 1972, it may be older as it could have been displayed in the window for some length of time before I purchased it, with a serial number 147 and model number A-880. The one I found on the internet with the same 147 serial number does not show the model number clearly on the photograph. If anyone is interested I will email the photographs.

            strom

I just acquired a Mdl. A556 ser. # 00144 and if yours is anything like mine its well worth fixing. Use only a reputable luthier(for the bridge to”fall” off typically means that it got heated to 150 degrees F. or more which is the melting point of horse hide glue which all quality guitar bridges are held on with)and if you’re lucky no strands of top wood[sound board] came with it. If bits of grain did tear off with it, the ultimate way of restoring it is to replace them[no voids] because you want 100% contact of bridge to top[with grain strands on the bottom of your bridge you might be able to stick it right back where it was] because this is the source of the guitar’s tone) as these instruments deserve it. Best of luck to you.

Hi, I have an Aria A544F, Flamenco. Serial no 00009. It has the numbers 106544-1, stamped into the heel on the inside of guitar. Solid top, possibly cedar? handmade rosette, ebony fretboard and ebony strip along the back of neck. Top of Headstock looks like a Japanese temple with a notch in the middle. Not sure of age, or maker, could be a Royji Matsuoka? Anybody know. Thanks

I also have an Aria model A555. I bought it new around 1970-1972. The serial number on the label inside the sound hole is 00081, which I think means made in 1970 and the 81st made that year of that model. If that’s true, then our 2 guitars were perhaps made by the same person maybe a few weeks apart.

I would like to know the age of this guitar. With a serial # this low, I expect it would have been built in the early 70’s or possibly in the 60’s. Does anyone have any info on this instrument? I would reaaly apreciate knowing more!

Let me know if you learn anything. I have a similar guitar I bought about 8 years ago in New York (also the MH80 model, but I don’t see a serial number). According to the Aria website, these were made in 1980 and 1981, and although the company is Japanese ("Arai & Co." — Mr. Arai reversed the vowels of his name for what I suppose are obvious reasons) and based in Nagoya, I’d like to think the guitar was handcrafted in Spain, like Arai & Co.’s other classical guitars. I enjoy mine — very good sound. The wood appears to be like those advertised from the company’s current series of classical guitars: spruce top, rosewood back and sides, ebony fingerboard. That’s all I can tell you.

      1. Aria Maestro Series
        cooltouch

I purchased a Maestro MH-100 new in 1983 after viewing a flyer that was distributed to the music store I frequented. The owner of the store was the drummer in my band, so we drove to Aria’s warehouse in Los Angeles, so I could pick out which MH-100 I wanted. They only had three to choose from, but at least I had a selection.

My MH-100 is a rather authentic reproduction of a Hauser in terms of body shape, and internal bracing. But not 100% — it uses Gotoh tuners instead of the Hauser looking ones, for example, and the slots in the headstock are not cut with the straight chiseled relief angles the way Hauser did, but instead it has the rounded relief cuts. The headstock shape is all Hauser, though. Another departure from Hauser is the woods — it has an Alaskan sitka spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides, with a Spanish cedar neck, and of course an ebony fingerboard.

It is a very nice playing guitar, but has always been a bit on the quiet side. I realized after several years that this was because of the finish — which turned out to be polyurethane. Why on earth they would cloak such a nice guitar in such a horrid finish is beyond me, but that’s what they did. About ten years ago, I decided to do something about it and refinished the guitar. Turns out it had TWELVE coats of polyurethane. Once I got it down to bare wood, I refinished it with shellac, using the french polishing method. French polish puts a minimally thin coat of shellac on the instrument, allowing it to breathe and vibrate as if there were no finish at all.

The difference was stunning. Suddenly that quiet little Aria had turned into a loud, brash instrument with singing trebles and a booming bass. Why had I waited for so many years?

I still have it, but it is semi retired now. The top decided it wanted to crack on the lower bout in two places — this was before I refinished it, by the way — and I had it repaired a few times, but the cracks keep opening up again. So I just ran a bead of super glue down each crack and decided that would have to do. Honestly, the cracks don’t affect the sound, just the appearance.

Except for the other two new ones when I bought mine, I’ve never seen another MH-100, but I have seen a couple MH-80s. The last one I saw was built in the style of another famous luthier. I want to say Rodriguez, but I’m just not sure anymore — it was about eight years ago when I saw it hanging in a music store.

I too have always suspected that the Maestro series were not built in the Aria factory, but what I suspect is that Aria farmed out the production of these handcrafted guitars to a good Japanese luthier who could handle the volume. Even though mine is finished on the inside, like a Kohno, I doubt seriously it was built by them. More likely somebody like Kimura or Matsuoka.

I have this guitar and am determined to find to find out ‘something’ about it.I collect acoustic’s but do have a few classical models-Gibson,Takamine,Yamaha’s etc.On the rare occasion I play classical,I find myself drawn to this Takumi every time. It is a beautiful thing with what looks like a solid top and rosewood (possiby Brazilian) back and sides. It sounds as good as it looks and is better than all my others. Does anyone have info on these?.

        Dr. Coenobite

        Hi there,

I bought my Takumi TC-125 S way back in 1979. Just graduated from high school and full of plans for an academic study (chemistry/medicine) I was fascinated by this guitar and made quick progress. In fact I wanted to be buried with this old friend/guitar. But otherwise, it is too good for that. Of course I mean the guitar! I want to sell it for anyone who is interesting in this nice and warm sounding guitar. Beautifully made with all the intention only Japanese luthiers seem capable of… Takumi by the way means… Luthier!

        XBoutaud

I bought my Takumi Luthier TC 125 S in London in 2003, new, in one of those specialists shops with plenty of options. I had plenty of time, and spend it carefully trying several guitars, new and vintage, then opted for it for its sound and feeling was by far what matched the best my expectations. I am no top class player, but over the years have tried many guitars and so far really keep a special preference to my Takumi, which is getting better with time, as it should given all top quality wood. I am now more curious about trying to find some of the history of its making, which woods were used, etc. Any additional info welcome, many thanks!

i can’t find any information on this classical guitar– not on the aria homepage or through any other discussions or forums. i know the guitar is old– at least 1960’s, and was made in japan — there is an ink stamp (which is mostly illegible) that has the city name "fukuoka" (export city? made in?) and "…by Arai," though i din’t know if he personally made it. has anybody ever heard of the model 542? (A542f)? and if so, can you tell me anything about it? (type of wood, year made, etc).

      thanks much,

      jordan.

      1. Aria classic guitar model number A541F
        Daniel Drouin

The serial number is 00613, back of headstock stamp 15625. I’ve had it for 8 years now and she plays well. I was wondering how old it is and maybe it’s value. I’d certainly appreciate any info………….Cheers.

      2. Aria 542-FS SN#13
        mowimbi

By the way, I’m guessing from some of the posts I’ve read that some 542’s had mahogany sides, so I suppose the FS on my model indicates that it is a Flamenco Spruce since mine is all blond…Blanca??

      3. Aria A542F, SN# 00023
        Duke Pearson

Bought this for 75 bucks, had the bridge redone, and the action lowered a bit. Solid spruce top, solid mahogany sides and back. Aged wood…sounds like a dream!

        1. Aria 542-FS SN#13
          Mowimbi

I bought this guitar in 1969(?) from the House of Music in the Ala Moana Shopping Center in Honolulu. Don’t remember what I paid.

I had been a flamenco fan since getting my first Carlos Montoya recording, and the wood friction pegs sold me on it.

The decal inside the hole has the Aria logo, Model and serial number. In addition, there is an oval ink stamp approximately 2″ wide centered on the right edge of the decal, so half on the decal and half on the wood. The center of the oval has a logo in the style of the decal logo, but this is spelled Arai. Above that in smaller normal print it says “Supervised by”, so: Supervised by Arai?? On the outer ring of the oval it says “Ryoji Matsuoka Luthier”. I assume all of this means Matsuoka was making guitars for Aria at this time under the supervision of Arai??

(OK, a google search produced the following paragraph and has cleared this up-cut and pasted from http://www.classicalguitardelcamp.com/)

“For a few years during the 1960s and early 1970s , Matsuoka produced the higher end Aria guitar models for Shiro Arai, founder of Aria . These Aria models either have Ryoji Matsuoka’s name on the label or are marked RM with a red stamp on the neck block. Matsuoka also made some models for Ibanez, including a few steel string flatop and archtop models.”

Having said all of that, I have loved this guitar since the day I bought it, but like my first wife, I wish I had been a lot more considerate of her! It has some definite wear and a small crack and a few dings, but the playability and sound is still excellent, and so lightweight! The clear plastic tap plate de-laminated years ago (too many trips to the beach??) so I replaced it with a white plastic one of my own design.

I also broke a few pegs over the years, so a local violin shop did all new pegs.

If you reply to this I’ll be notified, so if anyone wants to see pictures leave your email address.

      4. Aria A542F, SN# 00023
        Duke Pearson

Bought this for 75 bucks, had the bridge redone, and the action lowered a bit. Solid spruce top, solid mahogany sides and back. Aged wood…sounds like a dream!

      5. Me too…I have Serial number 000128. Got it a long time ago in Sacramento. The Model # is: A542FS.

It’s probably worth about the same $100 I bought it for, but one never knows I suppose. Mine will be donated soon no doubt to someone who might have a better feel for music or want an old guitar that looks like it’s worth something.

I think I bought this when I was in my late 20’s or early 30’s and now I’m 68. It needs to be 50 years old, I think, to at least be a collectible, tho.

It’s interesting that the name of the guitar is Aria, when the maker’s name is Arai as shown inside the guitar.

          Peter Melo

          Hi Brian,

A while back I put out a message (under the name Mowimbi) looking or more information on my 542-fs which I bought in Honolulu in 1969. I’d forgotten doing it until a search today brought me here.

I’m wondering of you disposed of it as intended? I never got any information on value, but I’d be interested in buying it from you if it’s still available. A buddy of mine who is retiring (who will now have lots of time to take up guitar) wants me to give him lessons. He has an interest in flamenco music and would love to have an affordable friction peg flamenco.

If it’s not available, I hope it went to someone who is using it! It would be a shame if it’s in a closet!

          Thanks,

          Peter

    1. Re: Asturias -Kodaira similarities
      Richie

Kodaira is a secondary or discount model that is manufactured by Asturias in Kobe, Japan.

Kodaira guitars are of the same quality as regular Asturias guitars, but they do not have the frills, adornments, and higher grade woods of Asturias guitars.

The Kodaira model number system is similar to the model numbers used by Asturias in the 1980s. The label does say Kodaira or Kodaira by Asturias. The current Kodaira line up starts with the AST 60 and ends with the AST 100.

During the 1970s & 1980s Kodaira models included the AST 40, 50, 60, 70, & 80. During that time Kodaira model numbers were tied to the Yen with the AST40 costing 40K Yen, AST50 costing 50K Yen, etc.

Asturias and Kodaira are great student workhorse guitars. These guitars were sold in a variety of scales: 650, 640, 630, 590, 550 and 530. There was also a 700mm bass model

I have a Meiko made by T. Tanaka, 1968. I bought it new at Sherman Clay, Stonestown, San Francisco around 1969. They had eight of the same model and I sat in a studio for a couple of hours until one "forced" to take it home. I have loved it ever since. It looks beautiful and has very wonderful tone. My teacher, Carl Bernstein (now in Colorado) encouraged me to buy a Meiko. After playing 50 guitars in all the music stores around, I was very happy to adopt this beautiful instrument. Bill Klein

A friend of mine bought it in 1978 and has hardly used it since, in fact it hasn’t been played since 1980. He would like to sell it but I have no idea what it’s worth.

The guitar: Asturias – Handcrafted by M. Mantano – model number AST 50. The label is signed ‘M. Mantano’.
The top is cedar, the back and sides rosewood and it has a mahogony neck.

        Rick,
Did you ever find a Dauphin model 30 guitar? I have one; Brand new when I was 16 years old and a new classical guitar student in 1983. Switched to steel string acoustic, so it was barely and rarely used. Few scratches from the pick. Otherwise, nearly perfect. Don’t think i’m ready to sell but I thought maybe in your travels you might have some idea of it’s value? Comes with hard case. Anything you can help with would be appreciated!

The only thing that I have seen recently is a Dauphin Model 60 that is currently posted on eBay. I bid on the item last time it was posted, but didn’t meet the reserve. After the auction, I received an e-mail offering it to me for somewhere around $620 plus shipping, but didn’t buy it. From the pictures, the guitar appears to be in good shape and the wood looks like Brazilian or Cocobolo.

I have a very nice 60 and the original case that I am getting ready to post for $550 + shipping. If your interested let me know and I’ll send some photos. It’s in great shape.
