Any tips on removing lacquer from a store bought guitar?

I just picked up a really cheap Dean V, the only problem is it's a gross rust/bronze/brown colour. I want to get the varnished paint stuff off of the body so i can paint it black, anybody have any clue how to do this properly? at the moment i'm chipping the coating off...any help is appreciated,
