: I recently bought a '79 Les Paul Custom, built in the nashville plant. It has the word "Second" pressed into the headstock under the serial number, where "Made in the USA" would normally be. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

I've got a '79 Les Paul Custom with "Second" pressed into the headstock too. It's black with chrome hardware. Over the years it developed a hump in the fingerboard where the neck meets the body and couldn't be leveled off very much because of previous refrets. So, I am in the middle of replacing the fingerboard and refinishing it. From what I found out Gibson stopped selling their "flawed" guitars in the early eighties. I'm sure they were every bit as good as a "first" except for cosmetic flaws. Since Gibson just sells "firsts" now, our "seconds" are very unique. Collectable someday? Today? Enjoy your Les Paul and make sure to keep it in a humid/temperature-stable environment!
