This guitar history is beyond new to me. Can anyone please shed light on this totally black issue. This guitar is in near mint and looks like a Hofner with a Vox twist to it> Sunburst finish and seems to be a good chord style guitar rather than a hot lead style. Got to be early to mid 60’s era. Help, Rusty

    Dear senor Orozco,
Wishing you an inspiring and prolific 2009!
I bought one of your wonderful guitars back in 1992, at an Amsterdam flea market. It’s a 1979 "10" model, and it’s been my closest musical friend ever since. The basses are majestic (I used to play duets by Carulli with my father at the piano)while the mid and treble range is mellow yet penetrating in a most sophisticated way. It’s led me to the vihuela repertoire and Baroque composers such as Weiss and Kapsberger. Thank you so much for putting so much love into this instrument, it shows, even after 30 years. Wishing you all the best from Indonesia, where I live and teach English,
    Frank

I need Information on a Electric Guitar called the "Royal Artist" and under that name it says Bruno. It has two pickups a Vibrato and is a Semi-Hollowbody. Very ornate Guitar. Any Information is better than what I have now.

I have one from 1978, type 8-u-133. Fingerboard ebony all through the neck so it will never bend. The guitar has been signed by Juan Orozco himself. On the back on the neck there is a serial number: 47251. Been playing on this guitar for 30 years now… Tone is soft, warm and sweet, although one can play flamenco or what have you on it. Love the instrument. I payed about 1350 Dutch guilders for it in 1978. To compare: a Ramirez costed 1800, but didn’t match the sound of this Orozco.

: hi im looking for any information about J Orozco classical luthier guitars. It was made in 1979 and has the serial number 8/4/37/ on the label. I know nothing of this make and any help would be appreciated

        Hello:
I am considering purchasing a J. Orozco guitar that I am borrowing to evaluate. I like it very much. But I don’t know it’s value. Asking price is $1000. Is this a good deal? The stamp on the inside of the neck is not completely readable. It looks like 7 digits: 011??41. The fourth and fifth characters are not legible, but the fourth might be a 6 or an 8 (a roundish character).
This guitar also has two hairline cracks on the front face, but is otherwise in near perfect condition. What is a good price for this? Thank you so much!
        Gareth

      Oops, something went wrong.
All the way from the Netherlands this message.
I was studying classical guitar at the end of the seventies and at that moment Orozco as a brand was introduced at the conservatory.
Good instruments that rivaled the spanisch guitar
      builders of that time.
And a lot cheaper (half the price!)

I know there is a site where you can download all kinds of catalogues (americain site!) and
though Orozco is not mentioned directly they
do have a catalogue of these instruments and
prices of that time. Kohno seemed to have worked for the Takamine factories at that time.

I had contact with the Masaru Kohno site but they
claim to have never produced any model for Orozco. Look at Trilogy guitars for the model 8, 10 and 15 from the same time. Very comparable!

Last year I obtained a model 10 Orozco 1979 and
that was really great. Though I hace a lot of guitars this one’s my baby!
And that includes my J. Ramirez 1974 clase 1a!

Have lot’s of fun with it and maybe someday we’ll
      know more, Best Wishes, Noud

        Hi
I bought a Juan Orothco guitar, model/serial no 10-u-26, from The Spanish Guitar centre in Bristol, England in 1980.
I tried it against a Ramirez. The Ramirez was better but only slightly and over twice the price! I paid just over £400 sterling for it. My musical partner bought one exactly the same.
As far as I know Juan Orothco moved his business to New York and Japan. He made/makes strings as well.

        Enjoy it
        Merv

          Hello to all Orozco lovers!
I kept on doing research untill I finally was able to contact mr. Juan Orozco himself!

These guitars are built by Tama (Ibanez)in Japan as the label says. This is his letter:

          Dear Mr. Noud Koevoets,

          In reply to your email.

I’m a guitar maker, I get it from my father and grandfather. From 1969 to 1983 I did a lot’s of business with the Japanese and put in a lot of work and time in the Japanese factory side by side with Matzuoka, Tamura, Yairi, Takamine, and Hoshino Gakkiten. I also help them design the guitar that has my name .The Kohno – Sakuray guitar we used to fabricate in a small shop in the company of Hoshino Gakki ten. These company produced the acoustic and electrical guitars on the name Ibanez and the main business is TAMA DRUMS. After we negotiated he decided it to produced the guitar Juan Orozco, in the same shop. This company used to make 175 Guitars a month, witch 100 of them were coming to Juan Orozco ,40 of them with the name of Kohno and 35 with the name Sakuray and just so you know they are the same Guitars, The only thing is that in the last years that we did this together,I’ve accomplish that they put my head design on the Guitars that would come with my name. Here you’ll find 3 pages with the pictures of my Guitars. The model’s we’ve design for me are the model # 8 – # 10 – # 15. One thing that you said that I thing is thru about the Ramirez guitar, because you’re not the only one that say’s that, I have many, many letters with the same opinion you have about the Juan Orozco Guitars.
I’ve moved my company to Puerto Rico 10 years ago, to expand my business in the Aranjuez Guitar Strings and the hard shell classical guitar cases, and very soon start to fabricated the same guitar that you now have in your hands.

Thank you very much, you really don’t know how much this means to me.I hope I’ve answer all your questions and if is anything else, I’ll be more than happy to help.

          Have a great day.

I have one from "1979" with the number "15-u-89." Its the best classical guitar I’ve ever had – It plays and sounds great (in my humble opinion)! I would like to know if Mr. Orozco (and/or others here) can tell me if the back and sides are laminated or solid. Its hard to tell just by looking inside because it has finish and is dark. Its a bit of a mistery to me. The guitar has a very immediate response so I suspect it is laminate back/sides but I’m no expert so I can be wrong here. Thank you very much for a great guitar, Mr. Orozco! And thank you to everyone here for this J. Orozco guitar info.

: Hello Mr. J. Orozco and fellow Orozco guitar owners,

: my name is Mathew and I am only 16 years old. Yesterday I was in Brooklyn visiting my grandparents. When I walked into the basement I stumbled upon an old beat up hardshell case. In it was one of your guitars. I happen to be a bassist, but I also like to play classical guitar. So I picked it up and it played beautifly. I have never heard a better tone from a classical guitar. Anyway, I cheched on the label and it said 1980, Luthier, and the ID was 15-11-54. It got me wondering about the worth on it and or the history behind it. I also have no intention on selling this guitar. I plan on keeping it and passing it down as a family heirloom. If you can give me some info on this guitar that would be awesome. Thank you.

              : Sincerely,

I just got(TWO DAYS AGO) a very nice Juan Orozco guitar built in 1979, the serial number is 56-F-99.

THIS model has a cedro sound board and a rosewood finger board, also a very nice wood mozaic rosette. It also has a stamp on the inner side of the neck – inside of the guitar – with the date : 790705.
              Any questions..

The label in my wife’s guitar says "Guitarra Fabricada Para La Casa" (different type) "Jose Orozco" Model #5 1970 with the 111 West 48th Street address in New York". This guitr doesn’t seem to have either of the names (Kohno or Sakuray)mentioned by Juan in his email above on the label. My wife and I were students in Manhattan at the time and she was interested in learning guitar. (Her first instrument is violin, but preferred and taught herself – mostly – piano.) She hasn’t been able to play the guitar much in the intervening years, but she "loves" the sound of her guitar. I wonder where and how this Model falls into the picture? Anybody know?

I have a J. Orozco No.50 and can’t seem to find anything about it. Like what kind of wood it’s made of and what kind of wood is the finger board. Some people at the local music store keep telling me it’s made in Valencia. Is that true?

: I found a Juan Orozco guitar made in Urugay. Is this luthier related?

                Hi Hugo

Your guitar is from Juan Orozco III., probably from his father Juan Orozco II. who also made guitars in Uruguay.

You may register your instrument on http://www.artesanoguitars.com/, a website about Juan Orozco’s latest guitar series Artesano. The registration is possible for all guitars brands he established: J. Orozco, Juan Orozco, Aranjuez and Artesano. An OwnersClub will follow soon.

I have a guitar purchased new in 1980 with No. 54-22–288, with J.O. at the base of the neck. It was purchased new from Juan Orozco music store in NYC via a music professor of mine that used to play with Juan Orozco. Can any assist in helping me understand its quality, value, etc.? thank you

I have a Juan Orozco Flamenco guitar purchased by my parents in the early 70’s the sound is absolutely extraordinary; Each time a professional or a teacher would hear it he would be baffled and start looking at the tag inside, it was purchase for 10 dollars at the time. It was repaired once and the luthier said there was no market for such an instrument and it could not be estimated.

Just purchased this instrument. The instrument is signed and labeled by Juan Orozo, Model 50, dated 1987, made in Spain. The guitar has a Rosewood fingerboard, Appears to have a spruce top, but note sure about sides and back. I bought the guitar with missing strings and no case, and have yet to play it. Anyone know anything about this Model? Guitar is in good condition. From what I am reading, this may be an instrument of quality. Can’t find any info on a Model 50.

I bought this guitar in either 1980 or 1981 in NYC. I just recently put new strings on it and started playing it again. I have a 1981 Juan Orozco guitar numbered #58. I cannot find a model number anywhere on or in the instrument. I previously had a Tom Humphries handmade guitar that ended up being stolen. This was its replacement. The Orozco shop was then down on lower 6th Ave. in NY. I played all the instruments, some more expensive, out of which I chose this one. I have never been sorry. Over the years it has mellowed and the treble sound is especially round and mellow and really sings while the basses are very strong. It projects beautifully and with new strings it’s hard to imagine a more beautiful sound. I think I paid about $500 for it. It beats the Humphries (about $1500 in 1981 $$) which had thin sounding trebles and was not accurate in the upper range. That one I heard is worth over $10K now. Go figure.

My #58 is and has been my best friend for life and I would never consider parting with it. However, I won’t live forever. I would like to know if there’s some way to find the model #, and also get some feedback on its relative value today.

            Hi, Eric,

Thanks for your post. I did figure out finally that the #58 is the model number not the instrument number. Other than that I haven’t been able to find any other info about it or have it appraised for $ value.

I did have a crack in the face that developed during the few years when I wasn’t playing it much. About 2 years ago I had it repaired by a guy in Kent, Ohio. He repaired the crack fine but really screwed up the finish. I think he tried to French polish the area, which wasn’t the original finish. There was some sort of problem with the original finish that he didn’t anticipate. To top it all off, the French polish smudged because it wasn’t completely cured. I was sick. If you have any info on the original type of finish, I would appreciate that too.

I expect that you probably love your 58 as much as I do. Enjoy.

          J. Orozco did not make guitars in Brazil – rather in Spain & later on in Japan. Around 1985 he was still in New York City selling his guitars which were made in Japan. I worked in his shop – so I know. None of his were made or built in Brazil. Once we received a very large quantity of guitars made in Brazil on consignment – very popular brand in Brazil – but they were all inferior in quality & most came cracked because of poor condition, etc.. I hope this answered your question!

      25. Juan Orozco Model 15 from 1979 for sale
        Paul Cohen

Hello Classical Guitar lovers. I have a 1979 Juan Orozco Guitar model 15-U-4 that I bought used from a guitar store in Manhattan in the summer of 1980. It had a few deep scratches in the table below the saddle but those blemishes did not effect the wonderful sound of the instrument. I have had it now for 31 years and during that time it has gotten a lot of use, and has some additional blemishes on the table, but again nothing that effects its sound. I had it retrofitted with a transducer pickup under the saddle that allows it to be amplified, but it can be played just as easily without being amplified (you would never know the pickup was there except for the input jack at the tail where I have a strap attached for playing while standing).

While I really hate parting with such an old friend, I have a need to do so, I saw that someone has the same model as mine and they are asking $4,975. I also saw that a similar guitar (1980 model 15) was placed on E-Bay asking $2,175 and it is in better condition than mine (only one blemish on the table). However no one offered to buy it. I am asking $1,500 for mine and can provide photos of it and even a short video where you can hear the sound quality. I really need to sell this lovely instrument a.s.a.p. I live in South Carolina but will ship the guitar wherever necessary. It comes with a case, string winder, tuning fork, Wittner metronome, two capos, an extra set of D’Adario long life strings, two cables, wire cutters, and a polishing cloth. My email address is “[email protected]” I will accept payment via paypal or western union (cash). I hope to hear from someone very soon. Thank you.

        Sincerely,

        Paul Cohen

Hi…I just bought a snare drum on Ebay – nice steel 10 lug unit from I’d say late 50’s early 60’s. It has a large black/gold Bruno Conqueror logo with lions playing a harp. I was doing some research on it’s origin, and came across your posting. I haven’t dug up anything else on them either, and am also trying to determine if this is legit, or an add-on badge. It’s a pretty good drum! Real pleased with the tone…

It is a es-335 copy with 2 pu’s.The body is sunburst with 2 F- holes. It even has th white binding in the F-holes.Gibson doesn’t even do that. All guitar necks should have binding on them.Mine has 4 control knobs.SN is 2122136 early 61 or 62.4 screws on back of neck with adjusting rod.I’ve seen 5 Brunos like mine always with a trapeze tailpiece and no tremelo.I would like to see the type of tremelo you have.It kind of leads me to think it is an aftermarket.Usually the Bruno bases look like violin style. If you have a 6 string 335 copy you have a very uncommon axe……. Hi i as well have a conqueror. Its red & black sun burst, nice tremelo bar, elevated pick gaurd, the plate has 2 knobs, 2 small white flip switches and cord jack, 2 pick ups. It does look alot like the ES335 gibson, but has a difference. if u stand ur guitar up at the top of the body, comes to 2 points, resembling flames. the gibson is rounded.

I don’t know anything about it but I ran across a Conqueror 4 string banjo that a friend was left by his mother. It also has quite a bit of pearl in it. Has nice butterflied wood on the back. Pretty good shape but needs strings. I too would like to hear from anyone who knows anything about the Conqueror banjos.

I bought a Conqueror brand new in 1969 and I still have it. Everyone prior to my note has pretty much described what it’s all about. I remember paying $140.00 for it back then. It came with a paperboard case .. it’s taken a lot of travel and pickin’ ..one of my sons borrowed it from a couple of years ago to learn to play. I just got it back … the only thing I’ve always thought was a bit irritating about it is the 5th string peg. If I keep it much longer (I bought a Gibson Ode in 1975 and still have it) I might be a geared peg in it and change to a fiber head and use it for a folky sound. Never was sorry I bought it.

Early 70’s seem to me to be the right time frame. I was looking at some stuff on Ebay and found a very pretty Conqueror guitar in good shape. It is a dead ringer of a Madeira 6 string guitar I have. Madeira was a brand name for a japanese import that GUILD guitar distributed in the early 70’s into the early 80’s. So there could be a connection. I’ve heard that Alarez had some connection to Midera, don’t know for sure.

i recently bought a conqueror from a gentleman who had a flea market booth for 200.00. It is a black solid body in good condition, two pickups, pearl inlay pinstiping on the front and back edge, pearl inlay on the peghead. There is a conqueror emblem also on the peghead, there is no other imformation on the guitar, not even a model number. I changed the strings, and hooked the sucker up to a digitech GNXl processor and it is sweet, i cannot believe it, it sounds like a gibson, smooth, smooth smooth. Can anyone tell me what i have here. I have searched and cannot even find the name on anybodys data base, this is crazy. It has a heavy feel and sounds great, but the knobs will have to be changed and there is no name on the pickups. any help will be appreciated, thanks.

      Hey,

How weird? I was on this site searching for that namebrand guitar. I have a guitar that belonged to my grandfather and it is a Conqueror. I was hoping to research its value, maybe discover when it was made. It is marked conqueror on the neck and has CS-7 on the inside sticker. This is all I know. I sounds okay for an old guitar. It needs a new bridge because some of the strings are buzzing, but other than that, it’s pretty decent. Anyway, let me know if you learn anything else. Thanks.

i was taught to play on this guitar by my grandfather, and he gave it to me recently…my mother was also taught to play on this guitar, so i know it has to be at least 40+ years old..there is no model number, but it has a mohagany front with a dark brown back and fretboard…its basically just a wall hanger for me, but its been cherished and it still has a sweet sweet sound..i was just wondering if anyone could tell me what the story is behind these guitars, and if they were quality in their day and time…thank you to anyone who takes the time to reply..

I think I own the model that you’re talking about. It’s a classical guitar with a walnut fretboard and back. It has an intricate pattern around the sound aperture and a surprisingly beautiful sound. I know it’s old because my uncle bought it in a pawn shop in Kansas City for my mom in 1979. Now I am the proud owner of this guitar and I play it every day. I’ve asked everyone I can think of about the origin of the mysterious "Conqueror" but I can’t find anything about it. The only other conqueror I’ve ever seen is a miniature banjo owned by a friend of mine.

I just bought a "Conqueror" classical guitar. It’s a parlor-style classical but says nothing but Conqueror on the label. No date, no serial #. It’s a beautiful instrument…solid cedar top, solid rosewood back and sides. Great tone and awesome sustain!

I have one of these too… exactly the same model and, same as yours, the sounds is amazing. I got it for $75 at a consignment shop, and I’m just as puzzled by mine as you are by yours. I’ve never seen another Conqueror in the flesh, but I want to, just to see how it compares. Another thing that’s notable about this guitar is that the harmonics are perfectly set, which is unusual on an acoustic, as the harmonics aren’t adjustable.

Well, it appears that we may have a C. Bruno & Son guitar as well. Apparently the company was orighinlly formed in Macon GA in 1834. The company has been in the music distribution business since then. In 1838, Charles Bruno and C.F.Martin formed a partnership to produce and distribute acoustic guitars. These specific guitars are labled with both names and were produced in NY. In 1839 Martin moved the company to PA and disolved the partnership. Martin did not provide the guitars that bear the Bruno logos on the peghead. Info directly from Blue book of acoustic guitars 7th edition . Hope this helps. Archangel

O K guys, when I did my first post, it never occurred to me that noone had any idea bout brunos period. I have done some reading about Brunos in the past, and if my memory serves me, Bruno was a dude that was one of the largest importers of guitars from overseas in the late sixties and early seventies, and imported from a variety of sources. I think that Bruno was also a guitar manufacturer before that time. What I do know is, the japanese made guitars of that era were every bit as well made as the instruments them mimiced. In the mid 70s, they were better than the guitars they mimiced, and then became the worlds innovators for musicial insturments. It now appears that Korea has taken the crown from them, Korean guitars are the best made production guitars available now. SOOO don’t sell you Brunos short, they are likely as usefull of instruments as the "name " brands, and probably had better quality control back then, which, of course, the do now.

Skeeter, you have some of the history correct. The most uncommon Bruno looks like a es-335 copy.Wonderful sunburst with 2 pu’s.SN-2122136 61 or 62Some ConQ Brunos look like violin style and some are hard bodies.I on’t know how old you are or what your history is with guitars but you are way off re: Korea being @ the top.I can stand @ the door of any axe store, look 80 ft. across the store and tell you which are Mexican,Korean, and American Fenders.Korean and Mex. Fenders of all types are pure pieces of shit. There is no comparison to my American Standard Strat in Korea or Mex.They just don’t make any axes in Korea, Mex.,Japan that are better than American Fender,Gibson,Martin,Taylor and a whole host of others.I collect and am also a luthier. Please don’t make statements like that. There are people looking for valid info and it misleads them.I could go on and on but I think I made my point….Best,Richard

I’m not familiar with how this comment/follow-up and converstion works, but I have a Conqueror, 6 string acoustic, made in Japan, very good Martin (D8?)imitation I am told. Bought from friend maybe 35 years ago. Have often wondered the origin of this guitar.

      SKEETER

I had one of those guitars, and have searched the net over just to find a pic of it. I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me pics. The guitar I had was cherry sunburst, lots of mother of toilet seat on it, seems like the pickup surrounds were even mother of toilet seat. I got the guitar used in around, 1972, I think.

I had one of these guitars in the 70’s. Bought it used around 1975 with a Silvertone 15 watt tube amp. It was several years old then. The hardware was already pitting. Mine was cherry sunburst with fake mother of pearl pickguard and headstock overlay. Had 2 single coils and a crummy whammy bar tailpiece. Sold it in 1978 when I bought a new LP gold top deluxe. Wish I still had both if them!

About 25 years ago, my best friend gave me his first electric guitar that he owned, a Bruno Conqueror. I remember he played it in a band I had at UConn in the late 1960’s until he got an Epiphone 335. I’ve never seen another Bruno either. This guitar is in excellent condition and is a two pup (single coils), double cutaway,
f hole, pearloid headstock & floating pearloid pickguard, free wooden based bridge with adjustable saddles. It has a slim fast bound neck, rectangular perloid markers, with an adjustable neck rod, the color is reddish orange sunburst and very pretty. It plays fine, however, the pots could use some cleaning or use. The guitar is made in japan (based on the neck plate) but there is no other identifying marks or serial numbers that I know of. With the rest of my guitars at hand, I never play it. It mostly sits in its original case . I do not have a clue to its value.

I have a Bruno Conqueror 6 string flat top, It’s the same design and size as a stella H 929 but with a smaller scale neck. The color is out of the world with a warm cherry flame top. Plays pretty well, neck is straight, came with nylon strings on it…that’s wrong but might have kept the neck straight all these years. As for the origin of these brunos, I think they’re from the kawai factory, which took over teisco in 1978. The kent accoustics have the same exact machine heads. Some early kents were guyatone made. Mine is a typical knock off from the stella/Harmony parlor guitar design. I sell it for $150 plus shipping. The color is out of this world…almost as hip as a colorrama harmony guitar. email me if you want to buy it. It’s more than rare,it could be of historical importance. I don’t see any of these around. I’m a dealer so I’ll sell anything. [email protected]

Yeah, I’ve got one too. I’ve been carting it around for about five years. I obtained it in a pawnshop and it was in horrible condition. Then, with the help of a friend, proceeded to rewire it and found it full of old ass lookin like airplane wire type stuff. Never been able to discover much about it. Orange sunburst, double cutaway, f holes, floating tailpiece with wooden bridge. When I had her playing it was sweet. Not sure if Gibson "ripoff" is appropriate, but a similar sound. Now its the corvette in the garage just waiting for another well needed restoration.

I just acquired a "Conqueror" guitar, with a violin-shaped body and an extra little block of wood at the top of the tuning pegs to resemble a violin. I found it in pretty deplorable condition while cleaning out a basement. It’ll need some TLC to bring it back, but it looks like a sweet axe.

Okay, I have one too! I think we should all just join the "WHAT THE HELL AM I PLAYING?" club. Anyhow…Mine is a guitar, however its one claim to fame for me is that it LOOKS like Paul McCartney’s 1963 Hofner Violin Bass. However, I need to take it in and get a whole bunch of stuff done to it. I do not know much about it, but from the little bit of research I have done on it, I have gotten two different stories. One is that These guitars are made by a company in Japan that makes mandolins…..so it was kind of a spinoff project. Ya know.."LETS MAKE A REALLY BIG MANDOLIN. .AND THEN, TURN IT INTO A GUITAR" kind of thing. The other is that it was done by some guy who was an apprentice of "Martin" guitars. However, I am not sure. But it seems we are all bewildered here. I am still investigating…I will let you know if I learn anything new.

                  m and J

J brought home a Bruno Conqueror today – but it ain’t no guitar – its a mandolin. She figures it was built around the mid 60’s. It has a turtle shell pick gaurd. Four sets of double strings.

Its about half way to a quality instrument, but I know nothing about mandolins. So I can’t say I can estimate its value… We are thinking of offering 50 to 75 – asking was 200. But, J pointed out the broken fretboard and the screw that was added to hold the neck handle to the body.

doubt this helps anyone – but it I’m guesing that you all have stuff made by "BRUNO" The mandoline maker..

I recently was given an electric guitar that has the name "Conqueror" in large lettering and Bruno in small letters on a oval background. On the necks heel plate is stamped made in Japan and a serial number. It is a Gibson ES-335 knock-off and very well done. The craftmanship is excelent in this quitar. The binding has yellowed a good deal making me think the guitar is old but I don’t have a clue. Does anyone know the history of this company? Of this guitar?

I feel lucky to have found one and believe others who have one feel the same. I also found a Trutone acoustic that has the book end headstock like a Gibson and it has great tone also. Hello Hery Martinez, I don’t know if you’re still out there from 2009 but, welcome to you & anyone else out there to the I just joined the “What the hell I am Playing Club?”. It is a semi-exclusive membership belonging to anyone who plays a guitar or other stringed instrument sold under the C. Bruno or C. Bruno & Son, Inc. name. They have been around since 1834 having been formed originally by C.Bruno in Macon, GA. Bruno partnered one year in 1838 with C.F. Martin to produce and distribute acoustic guitars. Martin moved to PA in 1839 and dissolved the partnership. This info paraphrased from Archangel of Guitarsite.com posting reply. As to your guitar you probably have a rather nice axe and this thread will provide lots of info for you. Also try Ron Busch the Guitarman at the same site. Try also http://www.vintaxe.com/guitars_Japanese as I did to ferret out info on my Bruno Conqueror acoustic guitar Made in Japan label and nothing else. Which you know by now, of course, can drive you crazy. Hope this helps anyone who sees it and hasn’t found any of the other replies yet. Thanks for reading. Steve

Hey, Barry. I have an old Bruno parlor guitar in OK shape(it needed some cracks repaired.) When I bought it, the seller told me Bruno was a protege/employee of Martin
before the turn of the century, and that the guitar he was selling was made in 1899. I know I’ve seen them selling for thousands of dollars in good shape, so be nice to yours! If you find any more info on C. Bruno guitars, I’d love to hear about it! Good luck, John

: Hey, Barry. I have an old Bruno parlor guitar in OK shape(it needed some cracks repaired.) When I bought it, the seller told me Bruno was a protege/employee of Martin
: before the turn of the century, and that the guitar he was selling was made in 1899. I know I’ve seen them selling for thousands of dollars in good shape, so be nice to yours! If you find any more info on C. Bruno guitars, I’d love to hear about it! Good luck, John

Hey John and Barry. I just found an old guitar that has a sticker inside that says ‘Bruno means Security’ and on the lyra style headstock is a plate that says ‘LYRA’. It looks like an old Martin, I’d say 20’s or 30’s, maybe later. I bought because the top is a very resonant fine grain single piece of spruce. I’d also love to find more out on Bruno guitars. Best wishes, Richard

My brother recently passed away, and in his closet was a Lyra guitar. What kind of value do these guitars have? I don’t know anything about them, and don’t want my son to use it until i find some information out.

Hi as it is true that martin made c.bruno then stoped making them buy the 1880s. after that washburn made them
i have done alot of resirch on them. I work at a music store and im in contact with martin and washburn. So if you can send me a photo of your guitar that would be great.

                1. I have a 12 fret Bruno guitar with serial number 16437 stamped into the top of the headstock. Can this number be looked up and the approximate date of manufacture be learned?

                2. I bought a Lyra parlor guitar last year and the owner told me it was made in 1936.It has a very unusual sound hole that was cut out in the shape of a harp.I have never seen one of these before and can’t find any pictures anywhere of this model. The oddity is what drew to it.

I have an old guitar that has a Lighthouse sticker inside it with Bruno Mars means security. It looks to be thirties or forties made, It seems to be made of Mahogany. Very mellow, smooth and bassy sound to it. Interestingly the Headstock says Harmony. Action is high. Would love to know if the action can be lowered correctly and not too expensively, Thanks Sincerely, Kelly Sampson Griswold

                4. 30" LYRA GUITAR AND FABRIC CASE
                  TERY

I am looking for some information about this guitar. I found it at a sale and I can’t seem to find any specific information
on a 30″ lyra. I seem to be chasing butterflies in the wind. It is in great shape and no doubt well loved by the previous owners. Maybe I shouldn’t let my young son play with it.

  17. buying a used one
    Jim

what kind of things should I look out for when looking over a used guitar? should the strings touch all the frets when pressed down at both ends of the neck?
