I recently aquired a 12 string Madeira. The sticker inside lists the model as A14-12, the serial# does not seem to be printed there. I was wonsering if someone could tell me about how old this guitar might be and what it might be worth. It’s in raelly good shape.

In 1972 my wife purchased a Maderia A12 in Norfolk, VA for $230 back then $230 was a real $230.. I had that guitar until 1992 when someone decided they wanted it more than I did and so while in my bedroom changing they walked in and took it, leaving the case. I would say that the A12 is at least 20 years old.. mine would have been 33 years old this past Nov 2004… Sorry I couldnt help you out more. JB

    2. My Dad gave me his old Madeira guitar and the model number is A-14. I haven’t been able to find any information on it, but I can tell you he bought it in the early 70’s. Mine is only a 6 string though. Hope this helps.

I just saw a simmilar guitar on e-bay that sold for 115.00. I don’t know what shap yours’ is in. Let me know, I’ll sure give you twice what that other fellow said. You were right to be insulted.

I found a book with guitar values for a C-60, which I also own and the value in good condition was between $260 and $600.

I have an old guitar that my mom gave me back in the 70’s. I am wondering if any one can tell me what the value might be. Someone who ran a used guitar shop came around to my yard sale and offered me $10 for it and I was insulted. Not that I think it’s such a valuable guitar, but come on, $10? It still sounds great. Does anyone have any info? Thanks.

I have a Madeira P 500 and I have never seen another one. My mom got it at a garage sale for $20 w/case. It’s priceless to me because it is the guitar that I grew up with. Good luck in finding more info

Could anyone help me please? I am looking for information on the P 500 Madeira. I have had it since the early 80’s, I bought it second hand. It is very blond with a 3 piece back. What does the P stand for? What year would it be? What is its value (though I would not part with it as I love it and I have a friend who knows guitars who told me "you’ve really got something there". I’m curious. Thank you for your time.

just bought (2/20/13) one from ebay seller out in san diego. Looks to be (and is described as) near mint, without a case, and I agreed on $325. For reference, I came across the Madeira brochure info from the early production years, and its U.S. price was $430, as compared to the less expensive dreadnaughts, which ranged to as low as $145. I’m hoping the guitar will be great!

It seems like no one has info on this guitar. I also have one that is close to 30 yrs. old and in fantastic condition that I would like to sell. I know longer play and feel someone should be enjoying it. One sold on ebay for $305. Can anyone tell me the value?

          Chuck

I had bought one back in 1984-1985? Let it go regrettably in trade for some other gear and have tried searching for it’s whereabouts for years, hoping to reclaim it. It was black/white zebra striped(only one I’d ever seen like that) with a Kahler tremolo. Had personal sentiment to me if anyone evre stumbles upon it. Last seen at East Coast Music in Danbury, Conn.

            Mike Pietrzak

            Chuck,

I purchased your guitar at East Coast music mall back in the late 80s. It had the black and white zebra striped paint job and the built-in preamp that needed the 9 V battery inside. I ended up having East Coast send it out to be repainted and installed EMG pick ups and also had it fretted and have had it at home ever since. I am planning to sell it as I am relocating out of the Connecticut area. If you are around and still interested let me know.

I have the bass, it a SB608. Thing still sounds killer. It’s way to big for most places with the poiints sticking out but it is one of the best sounding basses I ever played.

      Ezra,

Check out my review of the X-88 at harmonycentral.com. As far as worth, I would probably pay way too much for another X-88, especially a white one with 2 humbuckers, and the kahler trem. I’ve seen them go for as little as $250 and as much as $750. I paid $670 brand new in January of 1984. I just saw something today regarding the bass version. Maple neck with ebony board, came with a poplar body, though there was an upgraded maple body as well. Nikki Sixx is credited with the design.

i have the 2 humbucker + kalher trem white id trade for a single hum stop tail piece set up. kahler trems such so bad. at least the flush body ones do. ive seen them on ebay sell over 1000. the old obscure an are in limited print. granted mine is a little used an abused an the pick ups changed to the emg 81 85 but if it were stock it would be worth a little bit of change.just a real nice playing guitar once you block the kahler off.

I have a white guild x-88 with a Kahler trem and a single humbucker. It was used as a back up on the Shout tour to the one seen in the Too Young to Fall in Love video. The guitar is also signed by Mick on the back. Pretty rad.

    Dave

Its hard to believe the lack of info on these guitars. I have a A30MF. I have seen more info here than anywhere, but that F is puzzling.
The quandry: Mine needs some work, but it is hard to get past the looks I get when asking about the price to fix. I guess from the inquiries here, many people can’t believe this is just a good sounding ‘cheap’ guitar. Count me in this group.
It would sure be nice money-wise to figure how much to spend on repairs.

      Eric,
All I can tell you is that I have an A25, not the A25C, I bought new in 11/84 that has been a real stand-up axe.
Though made in Japan, the tone quality has improve over the years. I park it next to sterio speakers when not being used and I know that helps to season the wood.
As for as value? I’m having the same problem. I’m trying to find out only from a curiosity standpoint. Have no intentions of parting with it. It has become a very good friend over the years.

I’m just getting the hang of this! I also have the model of Madeira A25, serial No.78781 which I bought from a friend in the early 80’s. He bought it new for 80 pounds sterling
& I paid 50 pounds for it when it was nearly brand new. Yes, it’s a great guitar.I chabged the nut for a graphite one and lowered the action under the bridge. Plays great & stays in tune. Have never seen another model like it. Any info welcome. Andy.

    MikeF

I have a Guild Madeira 12 String (model A-12)from the ’70s that has an EXTREMELY high action. Essentially unplayable at this point. I’ve asked one repair shop about the possibility of fixing it and they tell me the repair will cost more than a new guitar of equivalent value. The sound is BIG and rich and I am reluctant to use it as a room ornament. Anybody have any ideas?

    1. Re: Guild Madeira 2 String
      Kevin Rice

I also have a Guild Madeira A-12. I have had it a couple of years now, and it has been unplayable also because of the high action. The reason the action is so high, is that the glue holding the support struts, (inside the body) is rotted away. This means that the bridge is getting no support and rises with the string tension. Is thiswhat is happening to your guitar? (You can tell by the body having a curved appearance between the bridge and the acoustic hole). I have just started doing the repair myself. If this is the samelet me know. Maybe I can take some photos, and send you instructions.

I JUST REBUILT ONE-THE PROBLEM IS THE THIN TOP AND THE EVEN THINNER BUTTRES JUST UNDER THE BRIDGE-THE WHOLE AREA IS PROBABLY LIFTED. I PUT A 3/16 BLOCK OF POPL;AR UNDER THE AREA AND BOTH GLUED AND BOLTED IT BELOW THE BRIDGE TO PREVENT IT. DIDN’T SEEM TO HURT THE SOUND AT ALL. IF YOU ARE NEAR LONG ISLAND NEW YORK, I CAN SHOW YOU HOW.

I’m trying to get an accurate replacement value for insurance/repair purposes. One store gave estimate at 800-900.
Another store said its closer to $1600! This is a really sweet guitar, everyone whose ever played it, heard it raves about it.

    Mike

    Hi there,
I am looking for a ’70s Guild dreadnaught in good shape, with no cracks or other serious problems. Normal dings/scuffs OK. Primarily looking for a D-25/25M, but will consider all. Love the sound of those older Guilds and would like to find a nice player.
    Thanks a lot,
    Mike

      Hi Mike,

I’ve got a Guild Madeira A-30R. It has to be at least late 80’s, maybe even 70’s. The sound is wonderful, like nothing I’ve seen or heard since the late 70’s fenders. I bought it second-hand in 1988. I hate to part with it, but I have small hands and pretty bad arthritis, so I hardly play anymore. I might be open to an offer.

      Thanks,

I just saw your question. I happen to be interested in a Taylor and am willing to trade. I too am looking to see about current value, opinions, etc. This guild is my main acoustic guitar. The guitar has a great response. Beautiful for rhythm. Some resistance. Not easy to play. But as I say, the response is great. I paid US$800 in ’99. The list price was US$1,100.

The Guild Nightbird name was ended in 1991 and basically became the X2999 in 1992. They only made 53 of them. The CL000049 is the correct number for that year. There is a music web site selling several of these at $2,200 though they have been at that price for over a year. They are at http://www.vintagemaster.ch/VintageMaster_List.cfm . I would think in todays ecomnomy somewhere between 1,500 to 2,000 is more realistic. I just purchased a Celeb owned first year Nightbird for $1,000. A year ago it would have fetched closer to $1,500. Hope this helps:

Do you mean BS 301, because I have one of these – funny shaped body, single pickup (single coil, P90 type), massive neck, big schaller tuner pegs….sound familiar – I found a pic in a guitar dealers catalogue/book thing, mine is a 1979 model and I belive that a mint example is worth around £5/600 or there abouts. Don’t use mine much anymore, going to strip it and refinish it, also the pickup is broken and I’m trying to find a replacement.

    1. Re: Guild Madeira guitars c600 when was it made
      RolAnd

: Madeira Guitars used to be Guilds import brand. Just like Epiphone is to Gibson now. They were first made in Japan with USA parts then were made in Korea with USA parts by Samick.(which also still makes Sigma for Martin, Epiphone for Gibson, and Squire for Fender but not with USA parts anymore). The letters in the model numbers do mean R=rosewood, M=mahogony, S=spruce, H-herringbone, and A=abalone altho the abalone was fake. The Madeira is a fine instrument that will last a lifetime if taken care of. Very close to the USA Guilds and Gibsons with only the assembly being done in a different country while using identical parts as their American brothers. NOTHING sold in todays market for under $1000 will compare with a 70s-80s Madeira, Epiphone, Yamaha, Hondo, Alvarez, or Suzuki. My 35 years of guitar experience knows this to be true.

      Pick

I have an A-12, Paid about $350.00 about 1977. Still have it and just had the neck and frets reworked, plays nice…they are laminent tops though not solid. Great action for a 12 string with somewhat thin necks. very little information seems to be out there and hard to put a value on them today.

    4. Re: Guild Madeira guitars Model A12
      Melanie

I was given a Madeira 12 string large guitar along with my two brothers, Christmas 1970. Model A-12, abalone I guess, dont remember any abalone? I do remember the label saying Guild A 12 and it was the most awesome guitar I ever had.. I learned to play on it and have never stopped. It was stolen from me and there is one just like it on Ebay on consignment. But, I just got a Dean 12-string that is awesome for around $550 at Guitar Center a few months back that is also electric even though I dont use it that way much. I prefer this guitar over the many I have including acoustics and electrics as I am a strummer and picker. Sears sold the Madeira to my parents for about $50 each. They want $300 on ebay. It had awesome sound though. And easy to play, I was able to play it and write songs the first day I owned it. Taylor and Guild and Dean are great guitars. Well I still love my Ibanez hollowbody and elecs and Schecter Hellraiser is awesome long as I have the pedal board and goodies. But most of all I just wanted to tell you that a Guild is a great long lasting guitar! I took that thing to the beach, I lemon oiled it to clean it I loved it and it slept next to me at many a camp fire. It had a stell neck and awesome action. I miss it ;-(

      Greg

I have an A-30R that I obtained in the mid 70’s. It was a trade at Big Sur for my crappy Yamaha. Met a person camping who had this guitar with a broken neck tied with a twine. Anyway, I got the neck repaired years ago, but now it is tweaked. Worth replacing the neck?

In the early part of 1971 I had the good fortune to play a Madeira (A25 ?) and feel in love w/ the sound and incredible action. Saving up the needed $79.00 from my $ 1.35/hr p/t college job, I went to a local music whse store that had hundreds of guitars hanging from the ceiling, but alas, they were out of "my" axe. They did however, have several A30-Ms at the outrageous cost of $110.00 ! After playing all of them and finding one I could not live without, I borrowed against my next check from some understanding friends and have enjoyed this fine instrument for the last 38 yrs. I discovered this site trying to locate another for my stepson so mine doesn’t dissappear.

: : Madeira Guitars used to be Guilds import brand.

My father bought me a Madeira A-25 for my 16th birthday in 1980 I think the action is incredible and am having a hard time finding out the value and where I can buy the tuning keys for it. If anyone knows any information on it please follow up the serial number is 7890 with an A or a 4 after it.
It was brand new and in the box when he gave it to me.

I just purchased my first electric guitar (I am 60). I know nothing about it but love it already. All I know is it is a Guild Madeira, stamped on the back with EG-50MB, has 22 frets, and has 3 pickups. Can anyone tell me more info about it?

;yes sir, i believe it was a japanese or korean made guitar made under a madeira label under guild supervision and specs. the madeira acoustics are popular among most. you can find ads for the particular guitar on ebay, that is how i found out what i had. (guild madeira EG60 sunburst strat)

i liked it but traded it for another guitar i wanted. reviews i have read stated a good solid 1980’s era guitar with good sound and i agree.

Just searched Grover and compared prices. I DID have to re-drill the holes as they were too small. The diameter specs were on the package. I easily found the correct drill bit at Lowes. (25/64ths I believe-this may well vary by different tuners). Anyway, looks great and plays…well YOU know! What a diamond-in-the-rough!! Hope you get this and it helps.

:Most any open gear tuner will be appropriate. If your love for this guitar is genuine and your pocket book big enough, then Waverly makes the best replacement tuners on the planet. 18:1 ratio would be authentic. We recently rebuilt a Madeira at our shop and do find that the value is good across the board with the tuners as the obvious exception. The model [manufacturers paper label missing] we repaired had bracing/glueing problems which once corrected, remedied this guitar. I would go so far as to say that its sound, although a bit mellow was similar to some of the Martins and Guilds we see. Greg for GREG GUITARS LLC.

Defintely a good guitar, depending on its condition. The tone can be awesome. Limited market I believe because of its mixed origin. Parts were made outside of the US and then assembled here. There are not many fans, because of the reputation. Maybe $500?

I posted a few years ago, in response to another guy who had a Madeira P-812.

These were made in the ’70s and early ’80s by Guild. They are basically Japanese made Guilds, and were an affordable alternative to their American made models.

The P-812 is near the top of the line in the Madeira range. It has solid spruce top, maple back and sides.

I’ve had mine for about six years or so……….Gerrod

: : Madeira Guitars used to be Guilds import brand.

      Uncle Dave

I had a Madeira classical guitar for some time. I’d swear that the promo material I got from Guild said the classicals were built in Spain. My model was a C-900. When I had it appraised, it didn’t show up in the blue book, the highest "C" being "600." Solid cedar top, rosewood back and sides, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, bone nut and saddle, wood and plastic binding–exquisite sound and playability! I remember the neck being wide, even for a classical. ‘Made it fun to learn lute songs on it.

I pawned it ten years ago (hard times), and would love to find another. I’m in the market for classical guitar again, and I compare every one I see now with my memories of this one. So, who’s hiding and hoarding? Let’s talk.

Hi, Uncle Dave I have a fantastic 1977 or 78 GUILD P-600 in mint condition for sale. It’s at a shop being sold on consignment. It’s been there for 4 mnths. now. The owner told me he was interested but, he never got back to me. If you want to buy it, once I get it back this week, you can leave your e-mail and I’ll send you my contact info. Thanks for your time. I’m still trying to find out it’s value.

        Nicholas

I got a C-60 from a pawn shop (2009) for $54.00. I thought it would be a cheap piece of crap because someone had it strung with steel strings and it was warped pretty bad. They also wrote all over it with permanent marker. Really I just bought it because I needed something to play (my other guitar is dead now). I got home and found most of the bracing lifted off the inside, so I glued that down (pretty terrible job, but it works)and strung it up, and holy crap! this thing can sing.

I purchased a used Maderia classical Model C-60, serial #70412 10 years ago and have been trying to obtain info on this guitar over the last severial years with no luck. It now appears from this web page that many of us are in the same position. I suspect from your post and others my C-60 is at the lower end from the C-900 & C-600????? Either way it gets played daily and sounds wonderfully warm and alive. Couldn’t be w/o it.

I have a Madeira C-900 classical guitar that I bought in 1978. It has the rosewood sides and back with a cedar top. The sound, after 24 years of play, is outstanding. As I recall, I paid about $350 or $400 for it in 1978. I’d love to know what it might be worth today. It doesn’t really matter I guess, because I couldn’t part with it. It’s part of the family. I have a Martin, a Washburn, a Gibson and an Ovation, but when I really need therapy, I always pick up the Madeira.

thanks for the info. i’ve been wondering about Madeiras for years. i had a 12 string Madeira which i bought in about 1977 or 1978 (or thereabouts), played for years and eventually sold. i’ve regretted it ever since. i loved that guitar, but i never really thought about who made it or where it came from, until years later when i wanted to buy again and could never find Madeiras anywhere. now i REALLY wish i’d kept it!

      hey Bill,
I don’t know my woods very well. I just picked up a "Madeira by Guild" with extremely blonde
wood on the side, back and tuning head piece. It’s got an "A30M" label inside but it looks almost
like Ash. So, this is still mahogony?

It’s a beauty. The fretboard and bridge are in great condition.
It seems someone replaced the original tuning pegs with a Grover tuning peg.

The bluebook doesnt tell of workmanship and materials from imports as well as it does from USA made guitars. Tacomas might be the best guitar for the money. Much less than the other American guitars with hardly any differences in materials and workmanship. I dont however like the smaller chief series. I love the dreadnaught, the concert body, and my fav is the jumbo cutaway made from koa. Every bit as good as a Taylor or Martin.

Mine has “MADE IN JAPAN” stamped in black ink inside on the neck support block and adjacent to that stamped on the inside of the back is the number 70304. Does your’s have similar markings? Mine also has “SERIAL NO. 7341” on bottom of the oval Madeira/Guild sticker and it appears to have a solid spruce top. Thank you, Scott

Must be a “Made in Japan: guitar, does it have an oval label in the sound-hole? They did not have serial numbers, the square labels sometimes had serial numbers, but they were also often made in Korea in the mid-late 1980’s. I have a catalog/price list from the late 70’s(?) I believe they were making 3 models of classical guitars then, C-10, C-60 and C-600. I might be able to find it in my files and let you know the differences and original suggested prices.

Just futzing around and found “Guitar Site” and some information on Madeira guitars.

I’ve had one for a number of years (purchased at an auction for $65), and wonder if it can be dated.

Oval label in sound hole which says:

            Madeira
            Model: C-600
adjusted and distributed exclusively by Guild
            Serial Number: 70610

            Nothing else.
Nothing on head stock, base of neck.

Just curious. As I said, I bought it an estate auction a long time ago.

              Steven Boyd

I just read an extensive but admittedly officially unconfirmed by the writer on the sparse history of Madeira. Yes, sometimes the Koreans would use an oval label but not exclusively like the Japanese did, according to the article. It’s the following statement printed that gives it away as Korean.

“adjusted and distributed exclusively by Guild”

However, I cannot confirm that. I’m just now learning of Madeira after placing an order on eBay for an A12 Japanese made so I am just starting my research.

      6. Madeira A30-R
        Kiva

That AR-30 was the first acoustic guitar that I had ever bought. While at University in 1977 I became quite broke one month, and so in order to eat and as it was the only object that I owned of any value, sold it to a neighbor in my dorm, who, while having a bad trip on LSD one Friday night proceeded to scream “EL KABONG” and did his rendition of an angst teenage Pete Townshend, smashing the poor and innocent guitar repeatedly on the hard green and white tiled floor until all he had left in his hands was the bloody stump of the neck.

      7. I just got an A-12
        Oren

I got it at an online auction for $82, but I can tell from the pictures it’s pretty beat up. It even has holes in the side, but that never stopped Willie Nelson. What I am concerned about is if it will need a neck reset. 12 strings of pressure over 30 years is a lot!

I’m going to have it shipped to my 16 year old niece because she lives a lot closer, and ask her to string it up for me and bring it when she comes to visit in a few months. But what if it’s so good she won’t give it up? Then she’ll get a new vintage 12-string guitar, I guess – LOL! Giving people guitars makes me happy. Say Hi to Arlo for me, and tell him he was amazing at the Newport Folk Festival in 1985.

I bought mine from a guitar store in lower Manhattan in either 1970 or 1971 for around $120.00. I must have handled two dozen models until I found the one I bought. It sounded as gorgeous as it looked…that blonde finish, etc. Still have it though I should have the action lowered a bit to ease up playability. Just an amazing guitar.

      9. Madeira Model # A I-N/serial number M1077 info..
        Anonymous

Hello. I found this site researching my step dad’s guitar. He passed away a few years back and i bought all of his guitars from his brother. This little gem is in perfect condition and plays and sounds great! It has nice, rich tones and is mahogany. I suspect this guitar is pre-1960 because of the serial number. I have looked at several sites that say Guild serial numbers pre-1960 were not kept well. Anyone have info or a website that can verify this? Thanks.

        1. No Madeira Serial databases
          Guido

Just so you know, Madeiras have no database of serial numbers, and very little info on when models were introduced and discontinued. In general: Guild developed the Madeira line in the early 1970’s to build affordable “folk” guitars, but they also built Classical, Acoustic and Electric guitars and basses, even Mandolins and Banjos. Manufacturing was started in Japan when the Japanese factories were starting to come into their own and started building pretty good guitars at a reasonable price, thanks to cheap labor.

The A-1 was an early model and was one of the most basic models. As you know, they sound great, common theory holds that the early Madeira’s were USA parts, sent to Japan for assembly. Yours probably has a decal on the headstock, dot fretboard inlays, and a simple rosette – similar to my A-2 and I love the tone of mine. My bridge lifted, so I’m waiting on getting a Bridge Doctor to install. Best of luck with yours!

      10. MADEIRA EG-41 BLK
        Victor

Does anyone know something about this electric one? MADEIRA EG 41 BLK
I found couple of places selling it for around 450$.
Is this guitar that old? I have one but looks a bit old also.
        Should I sell it?
        Any idea…Thanks.

        1. Do you still have it?
          Guido

I see you posted this almost 2 years ago, but do you still have the Madeira EG-41 BLK?

That should be a Strat type body with a single humbucker near the bridge. I bet those places selling for around $450 still have them for sale if they didn’t come down in price. Unfortunately, unless it has the original hard case, and is inperfect condition – i wouldn’t expect to get more than $150 for it. It is in the same class as modern Epiphones and Squiers – a low-cost alternative made in Asia (most likely yours was made in Japan). I like them, because one of my first guitars was a Madeira acoustic, and now I have 20ish guitars all Guild, and “by Guild”.

Let me know if you still have it…

          Slavius

I also have a Maderia A 20, Japanese assembled, bought in 1973. I’ve read many of these comments, and I just wanted to say that I believe this to be a good quality guitar, despite some of the negative comments. Mine is still very solid, shows no age, is a real looker with the mahagony sides and back (almost like a cherrywood), and has a clear tone. I also have a Godin, Seagull, handmade in Canada, which is much newer (bought about 14 years ago), looks, plays, and sounds good, but no better than my Maderia. The tones are different of course. One thing I like about the Maderia is that it “holds tune” extremely well, better than the Godin. All things considered, I give the old Maderias a thumb’s up.

      13. Madeira guitars
        Wyzrdofahs

I see lots of people asking how to tell if their Madeira is a Japanese or Korean model and it is actually quite easy to tell, just look at the headstock if it has just a simple rectangular shape it is one of the early Japanese ones it it is rounded on top then it is a Korean one I’m not sure what year the change was but that is how you can tell which country it was made in!
Now as to the quality of an old Madeira I can tell you this much, My A-40 Concert box has been played by some Major players over the years including Steve Miller and Taj Mahal and basically everyone that has played it agrees that it is a excellent instrument that they would be proud to own! For sound and tonal quality as well as playability the upper grade Madeira’s are definitely comparable to Gibson, Guild and Martin models that cost well over $1,000!

Hello! I see lots of folks asking about & relating their stories about the various Guild Madeira Guitars. They ARE great aren’t they!?…. I bought my first one about 20 years ago at a Guitar Show in Indianapolis IN. I was looking for a decent acoustic guitar to use for open tunings with a brass slide to play the great ole’ “Delta Blues”. I found an, A-30M that fit the bill. I think I gave about $160 & it had a clap board case… It turned out to be just AWESOME! I gave it to my nephew about 8 years ago for his 21st birthday, just on the spur of the moment. He seemed to like it & needed a good beater, back seat type of guitar as he was moving to Portland OR. He played my Ovation & the Madeira & I asked which one he liked best, and surprising me he said the Madeira. (Good thing. Coz he wasn’t getting my Ovation I bought new in 1972!) Anyway, he still has it & he’s sent me pictures of it in all kinds of places all around the country! The Oregon Mts. (Moultnomah Falls), the desert, grand canyon, Babtist Church in MISS, New Orleans Swamp, Sunset Strip, Nashville TN, Houston TX, Cocoa Beach FL, Pike Place Market in Seattle WA….. and on & on…. I put them in an album. Pretty cool huh?… I had taken it a long way & figured it was time for a “changing of the guard”, so to speak. I’d written lot’s on songs on it & he’s done the same…..
Anyway, that started my love affaire with Madeiras. I currently have 4. Another A-30M, an A-12, an A-6 and a P812 which I just bought last week! It’s the huge Blond Maple 12 string. Lordy! That thing sounds good!…. So, if you have a question or a story, I’d just love to hear them!!!! You know, we should start a club, a group, or uh…??? A movement…Yes! A MOVEMENT!!!!! As my good friend Arlo (Yes, THAT Arlo!) would say!…… So come-on you Madeira freaks! Jump on board the Madeira train!!….. Send your stories to me at [email protected] and if I get enough entheusiasm, I’ll post them all somewhere!…. Sounds like fun doesn’t it!? And this is for young & old & everybody in between! I’m Mike & I’m a 60 year old Madeira Freak!!

To Melanie. I have a guild Madeira model A12. Almost the same story. Got it for Christmas when I was 16 and have drug it everywhere since. Also a “picker”. I considering selling it. I think I need a 6 strung in my old age. Are you interested?

      19. Madeira A30R
        Slarti

Back in the early – mid 1970s I purchased a new Madeira A-30R from a music shop in Fleet (UK). I can’t remember how much I paid for it, but won’t have been much as I had only just started work then.
I’ve still got it; it’s unmarked, and still plays beautifully.
The serial number is either 27001 or 270015 – the final digit is very blurred and cound be anything.
Any suggestions as to how I can find out more about when this guitar was made please.
        Cheers

I just wanted to write about my A 25 serial no 92085 , which I bought in 1982 at Ivor Mairants in London and still love to play it.
Looking back now, the fact that such a reputable shop as Mairants , though the owner changed after the death of its founder, had the brand
as its stock speaks for itself the quality the guitar. Just like Paul, I was a student and played many guitars except expensive ones
I could not afford and as soon as I ried one stroke, I was immediately impressed by the Madeira for its solid neck construction, ease of play and much deeper sound than many others I played the day. I had been playing guitar for ten years already by then. I was surprised at finding Guild logo and made in Japan mark inside its sound hall and felt understood why I was impressed by the quality. I don not remember the price but must be less than £ 100. I have been playing it for more than 30 years since then. I now own more expensive guitars as Dutch hand crafted guitar which is played also by Steve Howe, Martin D 18 GE among others. I can easily say the action is the best and the sound is very good admitting each guitar sounds different. I refretted, changed nut and saddle from original plastic ones to bone also changed pins to ebony. These simple upgrades further improve its sound. I tried to find out which Japanese manufacturer was actually building these guitars from Guild supplied materials but have been unsuccessful so far. My guess at the moment are either Moridaira, currently called “Morris” for the similarity in name or Suzuki Violine which was then building many OEM guitars for both domestic and overseas manufacturers at quite high standard of skill thanks to its excellent music instrument craft
        experience.

      21. TI own a Madeira 6string acoustic left to me by my father, which he was given by a terminal cancer friend in the early 80’s. The lable inside has two underline marks, top is model#, which is smeared & the second line directly under it reads a seven digit serial # starting with 66 . I’m definitely definitely not looking to sell, but i really would like to know it’s year of origin.. i have read how Guild/Madeira overthe years has lost or destroyed records over the years. Does anyone out there have any info (personal, or to) when my sweet little Baby was made? I’ve been going bat-shit over the years searching for info! All i get when i show it is offers for good money for it due to it’s sound & excellent condition. Can anyone help out with some knowledge / pretty please? Side note- already offered a couple different good quality acoustics for trade. More than two were pricie- and sounded good, but didn’t have the sound, or action. I’m 35 now, i started playing it ( trying to) when i was nine or ten years old. And i noticed around my early teens that it sounded better with age. It sounds & plays many times more incredible these days!..

        Larry

I have a Madeira C600, made in Japan that I bought in the fall of 1975 from the Whittle Music Company in Dallas, Texas. It was purchased for my daughter, age 9, to learn to play. After four lessons it was determined that this was not for her. It is in the original case.
The guitar and case are in new condition. The guitar has actually never been played. There is a made in Japan sticker on the neck of the guitar, The serial number is 7554. The strings are nylon. I am interested in selling and can send pictures.

Hi Larry, I recently acquired a beautiful C-600 that I believe to be from ’73 or ’74. I got it from the original owner but he couldn’t recall exactly what year he bought it. Serial numbers are close so I am curious if your’s has the inside marks I describe above. Thank you, Scott

      23. Madeira A2 SERIAL No 8117.
        Fraser Gray

I purchased the above guitar in London early 80’s. Does anyone have any info on it?
I was going to sell it and buy something better as it did not cost me much. Is this a good idea and how much would I have to spend to get a similiar quality now?
        Cheers

      24. I have a Madeira bought new in the 1975 or 1976. It cost $116. I went to the music store to buy something new and had to talk myself into the Madeira because even back then, that was incredibly inexpensive. But it sounded unbelievable.

And it still does. Neck is straight, top is flat, fantastic action…. and the sound will still stack up against anything.

All I’ve done in 30+ years was change the open tuners for some closed ones (cheapos). One of these days I’ll put some Grovers on there. Nothing wrong with the cheapos… but this thing deserves nice hardware.

Oh, and I had to refinish the back because it got a bad scratch from rough handling in my dorm room. I put nitro on it and it peeled off. Turns out they are finished in poly. Sanded off the lacquer, sprayed it with poly out of a rattle can… hand rubbed it after a month of dry time… still looks perfect.

Anybody have any idea what a guitar like this is worth? I paid $37, yes $37. I had it restrung at a Guitar Shop, big for our area of 150,000 population and the tech had never heard of Madeira. He is trained through a guitar college of music.

The fret board is worn somewhat but it plays nice. Only cosmetic issue is fading on the back.

        Any information is good information.

        Thanks,

      26. Madeira Guitar 1974
        KRM

I bought my first guitar in 1974 with a combination of grass cutting money and money I made working off shore on the oil rigs one summer before my highschool senior year. I still have it, completely all blond, maple body, neck and frett board. The model says A30MF, serial # 41044. It is beautiful to behold still, 38 years later. I payed somewhere in the range of $400-$450, don’t remember exactly, just that was $400 something. Only marks are the burns on the fretts where I played a lot of notes on those fretts, and chords. Mostly lower register, 5th frett and below. I have a Martin and Taylor, besides my electrics, and basses, I keep it on a stand to play occasionally, keep fresh strings on it, just because it is special, that it was my first, and money was hard to earn and save at 16 and 17 years old. I can’t find any country mark or lable. I just noticed that the back of the neck is really worn. The inner tag does say “Madeira, Model A30MF, adjusted and distributed by exclusively by Guild”. Then 41044 beneath. Any feedback of it’s value or history would be appreciated. Thanks, Kev

I have the brother to yours. Mine is the same model with serial # 41066.

Mine came by way of a trade. The sound is very good, but there is (was at the trade) lifting a bit. The sound is amazing, even with terrible action because of the bridge.

I will repair it one day, but I’m afraid of changing anything for fear of messing with the sound…

I would like to know more about my guitar. It was an inheritance and I want to give it to my son. I can’t find anything anywhere. If there is no answer, can someone at least tell me where I can find one.

        1. Guild Guitar
          gostwriter

On Guilds Serial # website it appears your guitar was built in 1973. If it is marked as Madeiros it was likely built in Japan. If it marked as Guild and Made In USA on the back of the head stock or on the interior label it was likely built in Hoboken, NJ or Westerly, RI – It should tell you on the label if it is still intact.

I have a P712, how does it differ from a P812 ??? If you decide to sell your P812, please let me know I would be interested. I would be interested in buying a P712 – 12 string also. Please let me know.

        Hunter G Crawford

I have a Madeira 12 string Model P812, serial # A 2108, it is in fair to good condition. My question is when was it made and what value it may have. I have no intrest in parting with it as it was a gift from a stranger. It does need a set of tuning keys as their are some missing and broken. so another question is it possible to replace them with original hardware and or there replacement in other brands that will do the trick.
Thank you for any advice in this matter
I pray you have a blessed day

Hi Hunter. I just bought a Madeira 12 string & it came today! Actually, I’m in the process of putting new strings on it & came to the computer to find some instructions, as I’ve never strund a 12 string before….Anyway, I just saw on eBay there are sets of tuners for for the Maderia 12. They are about $19.00 with $9 something shipping. I bet these would work fine! Have a grateful day!, Mike

I don’t think you’re going to be ripped off. Guild’s hold their value and are good guitars. The D-46 was one of thier top of the line too. It probably sold for more than that when it was made 20 years ago and to by a new Guild of equal quality could cost 2 to 3 times as much
