  1. Gretsch Model 8717
    Vasco Gigin

I’ve just bought a Gretsch model 8717 guitar (second hand) with a Se No: 8-0153 written on a paper label in the control cavity. Could you help me identify this instrument? Actually, I love the way it plays and sounds, though I had to change the pickups (it had DiMarzios) and put SDuncans (Jazz). Please, e-mail me: [email protected]

Hi, In a moment of impatience I bought a used 6120SSl (2001) and I can’t keep it in tune for five minutes. What do people do, throw the Bigsby away? They can’t all be like this.

    Help! Brian

My 1956 Gretsch 6128 sounds a dream but does anyone know what the 220 k resistor in series with the pickup connection to each volume pot is for? Also any suggestions for an ultimate treble bleed network to compensate for losses when the volume is reduces?

    Thanks

You bought yourselve a 1977/1978 TK300! The bolt-on neck, body style, logo and styling of the body are unusual for Gretsch. The pickups are placed in what seemes random angles. By far the ugliest Gretsch ever mad. Regards, Ronald

Just bought a second hand mystery electric gretsch. No serial number, very distinctive head stock with gretsch written vertically (when held horizontally the logo goes from left to right). Two humbuckers, natural light wood finish and unusual scratch plate. It’s looks more early rickenbacher than gretsch. The headstock resembles a hockey stick head and the logo has no over arching T. On the back of the guitar at the base of the neck is a white rectangular plastic plate protecting the neck bolt. On the reverse of this plate is scratched the date 27/2/78. Havent been able to find any pictures or info and experts haven’t got a clue but say it’s very rare. Happy to send a picture as an email attatchment, any info would be very welcome.

  10. Gretch "Mystery" Guitar
    Gary Stevens

The Dealer tells me the model number is G3700-CT7TS, it is new, it is priced at $669.00, looks like a Gretsch Rancher Jr., but has a small I.D. plate listing it as " Heritage." I can not find this 6 string, acoustic-electric, made in Korea, listed on the internet??? In fact, I found the G3700 to be listed as a 12 string. The guitar in question is a sunburst model and I need to find out more about it. Sounds really good. What is it, where can I get it on the internet, and what is it worth? Thanks

      DevilMan

The Gretsch G3700 is a 6 string acoustic and is the best sounding I have ever played. It is a jumbo. I had one and gave it to my best friend and now it is his favorite. If that is the one, check it out on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-05-Gretsch-G6120-1960-Nashville-Lennon-Beatles_W0QQitemZ7404988018QQcategoryZ33041QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Also, guitar center sells it. It goes for about $650 to $700 dollars. WORTH IT!!

I bought the same guitar! Music City in Schererville, IN had one on the wall and after playing Martins and Taylors, I found the sound and playing ability remarkable. I had to own it. Now…I’m not sure what I bought, other than the fact that it plays well and sounds great. I would not part with it! I too would love some info.

Go to the public library and get "Accoustic Guitars and Other Fretted Instruments" by Gruhn and Carter. It has one picture in it with a brief description of the "40". also look for "Vintage Guitar Guide" also by Gruhn and Carter, it has a brief description but no picture. I know for sure there have been two "40"s on eBay in the last two weeks, you could look them up using the "completed item" search. Good luck. Brett

My Country Gentlemen has serial number 47799. According to some experts it’s April 1967, 799th guitar built that month.
But other experts claim a 47799 was built in 1962. Some spec’s: double mutes, rosewood fretboard, two Filtertrons, and kidney tuners.

Hello (and sorry for my English).

I’m from France and i’m about to by a ’73 Gretsch Super-Chet, my personnal dream guitar. To know better this guitar before the transaction, i bought the book "the guitars of the Fred Gretsch Company", by Jay Scott.
I was surprised to see that in this book, is guitar is not well considered. So i’ve got somme question specially for those who own one :

    – That do you think about it? (look, playing, sound…)
    – Are Baldwin guitars really bad?
    – What should i know before buying one?
    – How many were built?

    Thanks

I played one last night, and it had the most ideal, pretty much idealized Gretsch tone one could imagine. Instant "Chet" i a thumbpickers dream. It was sill in imaculate condition – too. Must have distilled everything good from the Baldwin years. I believe it was a ’72.

When I was 15, (1972), my friend from Evanston Illinois pulled out an ancient banjo and showed it to me. I asked if he would learn to play it and, in that electric light age, he answered "a BANJO???? No WAY!"
He bet me that I couldn’t learn to play foggy mountain breakdown in one month and the stake was the banjo.

So, here I am so many years later, wondering what MY banjo, here, is worth and the history of it.

Head to tail it’s about 30 inches long and weighs a ton. About 22 frets, and 10 Mother of Pearl eyes. A five string banjo, black box and neck and steel? front with white plastic? pegs.

I think I’m looking for a vague appraisal before I fix it up to keep it and play it (I am in a civil war music group), or if it is valuable, I will sell it to a collecter who specifically wants THAT kind of banjo. I just need a banjo that plays, and this one sounds great, not set-up. Its missing four pearl eyes.

      Let me know! Thanks.

Does anyone know anything about these late 70’s/early 80’s guitars? I think I just put one on layaway, but I’d like to compare the one I got with some pix. It sounds and plays awesome. It kinda resembles a Les Paul Junior.

Email me at [email protected] if you can shed some light. Thanks.

Ihave a 12 string dorado. I found a guitar that was sold for $299. It’s a 12 string acoustic, Gretsch, 1971. Seems like the right period. The problem is that it is called doraldo. One letter out. Rosewood fret board, dot inlays. Exactly the same as mine but different name. Maybe it could be the same? Go to http://www.rabbithillmusic.9cy.com/id2.htm
and go edit, find on this page, doraldo.

Hello. If any of you who have a dorado guitar would like to sell it, please email me ([email protected]). I am always looking for cool vintage guitars. I am a big fan of the Gretsch name and have found the Dorados to be very nice guitars. I don’t check follow ups much, so you’ll have to email to get in touch with me. Put "Dorado" in the subject because I get a lot of spam and tend to get crazy with the delete button. Thanks 🙂

I have a Dorado classical guitar tha I bought "used" in 1972 or 1973 & was looking today for bkgrnd & value. Found
      web site http://www.gretschpages.com with following:

"Later, in the ’70s, a line of low-priced Japanese-made instruments were imported and sold under the Dorado name in an effort to compete with the flood of imports inundating the market. Flattop acoustics and solidbody electrics alike were sold under the Dorado name. None hold much in common with Gretsch’s own guitars." Also, that Gretsch had been sold to Baldwin prior to 70’s; reacquired
      later…
The Label inside mine says: "DORADO … Serial 6027 … Distributed by Gretsch … New York Chicago"
Also, on the neck is a metal plate with name "Tokai Gakki" that seems to support the above. One additional comment I saw was that the Dorado was of decent quality with less value than "real" Gretsch’s… no $ values found. Hope this helps.

            JD

Dorado is a line of Japanese made guitars imported and sold by Gretsch in the 70’s. I am looking for a 5965 which is the smaller of the steel string line, had a sunburst finish, sealed tuning pegs and an adjustable bridge. The market worth is between one and two hundred dollars depending ……. Please post if anyone knows of a real good one with original case.

            1. I have a Gretsch 5965 in really nice condition. It doesn’t have the case though. It really sounds amazing, and I love the way the back of the neck fits in your hand. I was looking to get 200-250. If you need to get a hold of me, my email is [email protected] , I have a guy coming by tonight, 10/05/2016, to check it out.

I’ve played it for over 40 years and it is still the best sounding guitar I’ve ever heard! It isn’t for sale, but I found it unbelievable that two Gretsch guitars #’s 5964 and 5966 would be listed on this forum!

I love the way it sounds and plays – its the benchmark for me for all my other acoustics – I dig the sound of this beast. Been a total metal monster for an acoustic \m/>.<\m/

I’ve had my Dorado, model #5986, serial #41 since 1972 and have used it for classical guitar study off and on since getting it as a gift. For what it is, the sound quality and playability are quite good. I’m donating it to a church rummage sale tomorrow (6/3/07) and will remember it fondly. I have an Alvarez Regency, similar to the Dorado, which lacks the sound character.

The guitar blue book claims it to be worth $100 to $200 but I would not part with mine for several times that much. I paid $100 for mine. It was the best sounding nylon they had in the store. Someone had intoneated it.

    5. Re: Dorado Guitar made by Gretsch I think
      Mark Basel

Instruments previously produced in Japan circa early 1970s. Distributed in the U.S. by the Baldwin Piano and Organ Company of Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Dorado trademark was briefly used by Baldwin (during its Gretsch ownership) on a product line of Japanese-built acoustics and electric guitars and basses.
Dorado instruments are of decent quality, but are often found at slightly inflated asking prices due to the attachment of the Gretsch name. Remember, these are 1970s Japanese guitars imported in by Gretsch during their phase of Baldwin ownership! Dorados are sometimes rightly priced between $125 to $175; but many times they are tagged at prices double that. Of course, what a guitar is tagged at and what it sells at (cash talks, baby!) are always two different animals.

      Incongru

Me got a Dorado resonator guitar, very nice dark walnut finish with white binding on edges. I bought it in 1985 but assume the guitar is mid-70’s. Incidentally the neck has a very "japanese" feel to it. I was told by a guitar dealer that these particular instruments may have been ( at least partially) manufactured in Japan, then possibly had their resonators fitted in USA. They were DISTRIBUTED by Gretsch, in Europe at any rate. Mine is a nice guitar but not nearly as loud as most resonators.

:I purchased a Dorado Model 5990 in 1972 new and it was DISTRIBUTED by Gretch, made in Japan. This is a low price "starter" guitar that equals many higher priced brands. I can let it sit for weeks and it stays in tune. Age has mellowed the sound and it plays as well as any fender, Gibson, or even Gretch, of equal construction all things considered.

I had to get the wood fixed as the bottom wood was broken. It has a good sound and I am curious as to it’s value and history also. Let me know if you have any information. 9/14/2007

Folks, I have both a model 5968 and a model 5969 "Dorado by Gretsch" which are identical to the ones listed in the 1973 Dorado catalog. Got the 5968 recently for $100, and the 5969 for $90 2.5 years ago. I think they sound nice and are well made for the money. Also, the 5968 was my first ever guitar purcahse, and I remember it costing $113 total when I bought it new in 1976 in Jenkintown, PA.

      1. Dorado model 5970 (1973 country jumbo
        Anonymous

Bought this on eBay for $51 with a plush1970’s hard case–shipping was more, at $53. I’ve owned, played and set up/repaired dozens of vintage acoustics, and this Dorado, after a saddle compensation and slight tweak in the nut is now my player and sits in the living room stand. It has the tightest grain I have ever seen on its solid spruce top. The back and sides are lam with mahogany veneer. The sound out of its deep, slightly over-dreadnought size box is amazing, comparable to D-18 for sheer volume; comparable to Guild’s D35 for sweet mids and clear and distinct bass. A huge surprise for me, as I thought I’d be cleaning up, setting up and reselling it packed in a cheapo case.

      2. Dorado 12 string
        Don Paolo

        Dorado Fans,

I received a Dorado 12 string as a birthday present in the late 1990s, installed a passive pickup, and played it around the house and at small venues for fifteen years or more. For an all-laminate, smaller body 12 string with a trapeze bridge, it sounded great. The neck was comfortable, too. I had a 1965 Gibson B-25 12 for a few of those years, but the neck was way fatter than the Dorado, which I passed along to a friend in need. I can’t say the Dorado sounded better than the Gibson, but it sure out-jangled it. Wish I still had it!

I’d love to know how old my 6 string acoustic is, but the discussion threads tend to be full
        of tangent discussions leading nowhere.

Does anyone know the production year of Model 5970?

        Thanks

I bought this same model 5970 about 2 years back from ebay USA. Dont recall the advertised manufacturing year but I love the guitar and play only it almost always and I have plenty of vintage acoustics to choose from, mainly Japanese but not only.

      5. Dorado 5984 or Dorado 952
        Hendrik

Does anyone have a Dorado 5894 Electric Classic or Dorado 5952 Electric Classic? These classical guitars had a pickup made by Baldwin. I am very interested in these guitars. If you have one, please contact me at hendriksibma [at] hotmail [dot] com.

      6. Dorado
        Boyer Bros. Guitar & Ukulele

I’m a luthier with a Gretsch Dorado in my workshop, Serial Number 5968. It must have been produced just before the gentleman’s guitar (serial number 5969) that was purchased while he was serving in Germany back in 1986.
Funny, the Dorado was manufactured in Japan during the 70’s and the Japanese factory worker must have arbitrarily placed a model number when he or she felt like it. However, it seems that Serial Numbers (presumably in proper sequence) were always assigned and hand written with a black ink pen. My example, while space is present, is void of any model number.
It is a standard dreadnought with 26 frets. There are no electronics, no cutaway, and no fancy upgrades. It has a book matched sitka spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, adjustable rosewood bridge, cream colored plastic binding, rosewood back and sides, and a black inlaid headstock. The neck is not one piece and is made from presumably African mahogany. It has closed gold tone tuners, black beveled pick guard and some plain black line art for a rosette. This guitar is void of polyurethane and has a lacquer finish, so much the better.
The problem: this particular guitar suffers from belly lift, a slight bulge at the 20th fret and a rattle that the owner described as a loose brace. This is not a forum on guitar repair, so I won’t go into detail about the problems and their solution.
Bottom line is that these are a decent Japanese guitar from the mid seventies and valued at around $300 dependant upon condition. Some dealers attempt to sell these for much more because of the name Gretsch attached to the label. Be smart.

        1. Dorado Model Numbers
          Boyer Bros. Guitars & Ukuleles

Boy, do I know how to look stupid? (please don’t respond to that statement)
The 5968 written on the label is a model number, not a serial number. It seems that the labels were void of serial numbers rather than model numbers (the opposite of what I had originally suspected). The Dorado I’m working on is constructed of rosewood while the Model 5969 is Mahogany. The 5969 is identicle in size to the 5968 but had nickel plated tuners and a satin finish. From my quick look around the auction business, it appears that the Mahogany back and sides model brings about $150 less than the Rosewood model.

      7. Dorado 5969 Guitar
        dj

I have a Dorado model 5969 guitar I bought in Germany when I was staitioned there in 1986. Still play it everyday. Has that look and sound similiar to a Martin D18 in my opinion and not to bad for a guiatr I paid $25.00 for. If anyone has any information on this model guiatr I would love to get it.

        Thanks

  22. White Falcons and Superchets-Great, but?
    HMay

I love Gretsch Guitars, the way they sound , that is.I’ve had two white falcons during the 70’s , a Super Chet during the late 70’s a a Super Chet during the late 80’s. No guitar in the world sounds a good as they do, however, they are the worst piece of crap as a guitar ever made. I had to send my first White Falcon back to get a new neck put on it. After each song you had to turn it up again. It wouldn’t stay in tune. Only the Super Chet didn’t have the floating bridge and it would stay in tune, but I had a lot of trouble with the knobs coming off the pickguard. My favorite guitar is the Super Chet and I got them and got rid of them as I would quit playing. I wish I’d keep the Super Chet. I have a Fender Custom Shop Tele, Jr now and I have two Gretsch White Falcon Pickups that fit in the P90 holes like it was made for them. It’s my main guitar now and it has the Grestch tone in the body of a dependable guitar. You’d think that Grestch would have made some changes that would have made the necks and tuning better for the money they charged for their guitars which were the highest in the country during the decades they were made in the USA. If anyone has a Super Chet they would like to sell and would like to trade for a Telecaster Tele, Jr Custom Shop guitar with White Falcon pikcups in it(Still have the original P90’s), I’d love to talk to you. Sadly, the new gretsches are worst than the originals. Only the Super Chet is a really find dependable guitar.

      Larry,
I’m in the same boat. I just purchased a 1979 Stereo White Falcon and someone messed up the tone switches. I took the board out and drew out the copper traces, but mine is missing components and has been significantly rewired (mono not stereo!). If I had an original example to go from I could draw a schematic for all of us to use.

If your guitar has not been modified, maybe we can work together to generate a schematic. I traced the board in mine, which is mounted with the pots and switches. Problem is, my guitar has been modified some (stereo changed to mono and some tone circuitry altered). If you’d be willing to take the pad and back off your guitar and carefully inspect where wires go I may be able generate a schematic. It might require pulling your circuit board, which is a little more complicated.

: : Do you have any available? Do you have pictures and info etc? Just saw one at Sam Ash in NYC (48th street) on May 17th, for $1200 w/ OHSC, neck looked fairly good, played okay.

My fater-in-law has a red Super Chet. I have put together a spec sheet on it and if you would like a copy send me your email address and I will attach the spec sheet to my reply. It is a beautiful instrument. The spec sheet has all the dimensions and component descriptions. We did check with a dealer to see what the value of the guitar is and we were told that it was $1,500 -$1,800 in the Used Guitar Book of Values. We were both shocked that the price was this low as the guitar is wonderful to play, is probably the most beautiful guitar I have seen and it is in like new condition. The cost of the guitar in July of 1964 was $1,100.

My father-in-law has a Gretsch Super Chet. It is a beautiful red guitar with very unique binding and great sound, It also has a thin neck. I have been trying to find what the market value of the guitar is. I have other specs on the guitar if you are interested.

Hi,I aquired a Gretsch Super Chet 10 years ago via my brothers friend, It cost £1000.00. It is the walnut model with bigsby tremelo and gold fittings.I play it through a recently aquired 17.5 watt zenith all valve jass combi with a celestion 44 speaker. This amp was all origional 1957 with a valve tremlo.I mike it up to a dynachord mixer and ev 300 speakers with added echo and it sounds fantastic.I us flat wound hi chrome strings for a smooth tone and the amp brings out the crisp punchy sound which i feel cannot be improved on. Thanks for taking the time to read any coments email me,thanks philip

I have one. Found it under a bed where it had been for 26 years, never opened. A fine 79 super chet walnut, original case, too beautiful for words. It was only played for 3 years when the owner passed away, his family left it under the bed until I was able to get it.

I also have a Super Chet (1972 model) and agree with your views about the guitar. I do need a replacement Schaller Tuner and bridge saddles for mine but have been unable to locate any at this point. I would appreciate any information about replacement parts.

: The Gretsch Super Chet is a very special guitar that was made from 1972 to 1980 and they are quite rare. There were several variations. The 1972 model had a headstock shaped much like a Gibson but was later changed to the "round-top" headstock that is common to Gretsch guitars. Chet Atkins was pictured on the cover of one of his albums with a 1972 Super Chet showing this variation. The usual finish was a "cherry-red" finish, however, there was a very rare variation made with Walnut and a tranparent brown finish. The Super Chet also was made with and without the Bigsby tremolo tailpiece. The Chet Atkins Bigsby tailpiece was much more rare on the Super Chet. The standard tailpiece had beautiful inlay and is a similar shaped tailpiece that was used in the late 1970-s and 80’s on the Gretsch Country Club. By the way, all the hardware was real Gold plating-not the cheap brass or alloy plating seen on guitars now. Be careful if you are looking to buy one because I have seen several imitations at the guitar shows that were nothing more than Japanese junk. Have the guitar inspected by somebody that knows Gretsch vintage guitars. As far as value-they can vary from $1000.00 for one in poor shape to $7000.00 for mint walnut with original Chet Atkins Bigsby with original case and papers. Of course we have to keep in mind anything is only worth what is paid for an item. I have studied the Super Chet extensively because I consider it the finest Hollow Body Electric ever made. If you have one that is original and in better than good condition please take precious care of it because you have a gem that will not be easily replaced and future generations deserve to see the workmanship that occured before all the imports took over the market.

I have one. 1979 Walnut with the Bigsby tailpiece. I found it under a friends bed where it had been unopened in the case for 26 years. It was only played for 3 years before the original owner passed away. Not mint, but pretty close to it. I’d say 90%, and in the original hard shell case.

I purchased one some years back. Absolute mint condition. Plays and sounds wonderful. Has the original, gold tailpiece, not the Bigsby. I take it out only when I want to reward myself.

            1. 1971 Super Chet
              Randy Cottrell

I was reading the article by Dan D and hoped he could respond to my quest to find out about my guitar, serial no. 101179. It has the Gibson style head stock and the Bigsby tremolo tail piece. It is a light brown stain. I understand that Clyde Edwards built the first Super Chet by hand and that only 2 were built in 1971. The first was given to Chet himself.

I would appreciate any insight I can get as to the provenance of this instrument.

              Anonymous

IN THE LATE 1960 – EARLY 1970′ I PERFORMED WITH A RED SUPER CHET. IT WAS DIFFERENT, HOWEVER, BECAUSE I ORDERED IT WITH CHROME RATHER THAN THE GOLD. MY DEALER TOLD ME IT WAS THE ONLY ONE GRETSCH EVER MADE LIKE IT BECAUSE THEY HAD TO TAKE THE GOLD OFF TO PUT THE CHROME ON — AND IT TOOK TOO LONG. I LET IT GO, DARN IT ALL, IN THE 1990’S AND I ALWAYS WONDERED WHAT HAPPENED TO IT. DOES ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW? I DON’T THINK I COULD AFFORD TO BUY IT BACK, BUT WHO KNOWS? I LOVED THE GUITAR AND WOULD LIKE TO AT LEAST HEAR IT HAS A GOOD HOME. THE CHROME IS THE OBVIOUS CLUE TO TRACK IT DOWN…IT PROBABLY IS ABOUT AS RARE AS YOU CAN GET…ONE OF A KIND.

I am trying to find any information possible about a banjo we just came across. It is a four string tenor. It has either ivory of mother of pearl inlay on the neck with other designs inlaid in it. It is very heavy. Any information you can supply to me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Lenora Dossey

I think I have a banjo similar to yours. It is a Gretsch Broadkaster Special. It sounds exactly the same as what you have described. The one I have is missing the mother of pearl dots along the fretboard, there should be seven of them.Do you still have your banjo ? Do you know what it is worth?
