  3. Yamaha guitars or not?
    John John

I was looking @ buying a Yamaha guitar ($299… I am just starting and have limited budget) and was wondering if I should go w/ Yamaha or if there is another brand that I should get (in same price range – $250-$325)…I am looking at acoustic/electric. I dont know if you can answer due to there being so many guitars, but if you can tell me overall I would appreciate it!

I would recommend either ESP models or Ibanez models. They have more of a metal sound. Look for guitars with at least 2 humbuckers. If you have any questions about guitars, basses, or amps, please let me know. You can email me at [email protected] or call me toll free within the USA at 1(888)590-9700.

  5. New player question
    Angel Love

My 13 year old son wants a guitar for Christmas. He plays in the band at school, but plays the trumpet. Of course he can read music, but my question is what guitar is best for a beginner? He wants an electric one, but as I am guitar illiterate I don’t even know where to begin. Could you offer any suggestions? Thank you!

You might look into Fender’s mid line of guitars. These are mostly made in Mexico or Korea. They are well made guitars with decent hardware and pick-ups. I would suggest a Stratocaster or a Telecaster. These are both reliable and versital instuments. They will be in the 200-400 dollar range. But in buying an electric guitar you’ll need to buy an amplifier as well. There are many different ones to chose from for all kinds of different applications. But for a beginner I would suggest a small solid state amp with a headphone jack built in. Peavy and Crate make some good small ones. These will be in the 100-200 dollar range. He’ll need a good guitar cord (20 bucks), some picks ( pocket change), a guitar tuner ($20), and a strap ($10). As you can see, it is expensive to play a guitar. I’m not trying to turn you off from the idea, just trying to show you what is involved. Your best bet is to watch the newspaper in the classified section (most have a sectiion just for musical instruments) where you can find some really good deals. But you say you don’t know much or anything about guitars. Thats O.K. Asked around the people you know. Chances are someone you know plays. Get them to help you. I bet your son knows someone who plays. Thats another good source of information. People are always selling instruments to pawnshops. You might try there. In all cases take someone you know and trust to check it out. If you buy from a catalog, be sure there is a return policy in case there is something wrong with the instrument and/or amp. His band instructor maybe another good source for information. If possible, let your son do the choosing. If he does’nt like it, he wont play it. It’s exciting that your son wants to start at such a young age and it is commendable that you are supporting him. I started playing when I was eleven and am 47 now. It has been a life long joy and I hope it will be for your son.

      Good afternoon.
Since your son reads and plays few instruments, I assume that music is a part of his everyday life.
I would look into a guitar that is well made. Since his opinion is not fully developed yet,
of what he likes in the instrument. I would buy a decent guitar and make it an investment
sometimes good instruments prompt for better playing. If you have any more questions
please feel free to email me, if i can be of help.

  6. How good is Yamaha?
    Jesse

I will post this message again. How good are Yamaha guitars? I live in Southwest China and the best guitar here (the most expensive, and the only import) is a Yamaha. The model I have seen is APX 4A. Where does Yamaha rank in the guitar world? Would Yamaha be a good buy if I wanted a reputable guitar?

Jesse, Yamaha’s mid to upper line are good guitars.

        Hello
I play jazz guitar, but i do own two yamaha guitars. one is a semi hollow body one
http://www.yamaha.com/cgi-win/webcgi.exe/DsplyModel/?gEGU00004AES1500 that is the one that i have.
it is a very nice instrument, with respectable tone. the neck is rather long though, but if that doesnt trouble you
it is a great instrument. sounds great, playes great, and responsive.
i also have an acoustic yamaha, which is ok. but over all i am satisfied with the maker.

          Kevin Smith

: Jimmy–There was a notice that you posted a reply to my message, but there is nothing there. What happened?

I have a ’99’ish Yamaha Pacifica 412, 6 string Strat knock-off. It is a phenomenal guitar. Excellent action and very forgiving. Good tones, combo of two regular and one humbucker make it rock out. Bought for $375 used, probably can be had for less.

  7. archtop jazz guitar
    dale agan

I would like to get an archtop hollowbody – the choices seem to be either very expensive American or Korean and I’m leaning toward the more affordable Korean guitars. I would like advice from those who are familiar with both as to how the two compare (sound, playability, reliability, and any other pertinent info. These guitars are not easy to find in local music stores for auditioning purposes.

      Strummer

: I recently purchased a Dean Del Sol jazz guitar at a very affordable price which none of the American competition comes close to in comparison.
