    1. Re: locknut on '85 PR1660
      Aubrey

It should be possible. Mine came from the factory with a locking nut that matches all the other hardware, such as the tuners, bridge, vol, and tone knobs. So I wonder if the locking nut on your guitar was removed?

As far as overall stability, you may also want to think about the bridge on the PR1660. The standard "pro rocker II" bridge that came on most PR 1660’s was not nearly as stable as the floyd rose type of systems. Therefore, even with the locknut clamped down, the original bridge is not ideal for any serious wammy action. However, it’s better than most of the factory equipped bridges from the mid 1980’s in terms of accurate mild to moderate dives and bends and returning to being in tune.
I like to tune mine, then quickly do a few dives, then re-tune, and this seems to give the best setup on my beloved PR1660.

: Is it possible to fit a locking nut to the PR1660, if not would locking tuners make it more stable?

        Martin Hansen

I don’t think that there has ever been a locknut on mine as there is no holes drilled for it there is just a standard "fender style" nut rout… Possibly the neck could have been replaced.. I bought it second hand so anything is possible

        1. Re: locknut on '85 PR1660
          Aubrey Turner

I looked at the headstock on mine. I also have a "fender" style nut rout. On the front mine has the words "pro line series" after the large "Ibanez". Also, on the back of the headstock, right in the center, mine has a small rectangular sticker that says PR 1660.
If you are wondering whether you have the original versus a replaced neck, the presence or abscence of these markings might be a clue. Aside from a replaced neck, another very real possibility, is that Ibanez changed the neck and headstock over time, with later guitars including a locknut.

Okay, if you can find a correct locknut, I think you’ll be in business. My locknut is not "straight", b/c the middle portion (which locks the 3rd & 4th strings) is staggered away from the nut rout, to provide access to the nut. If you want my to email you a picture of the locknut, let me know and I’ll send it so you can begin your hunt. Good luck!

I am a singer/songwriter/guitar collector, and my favorite guitar to play besides my Fender American Deluxe Strat, is my 77′ Ibanez Concord acoustic, which is basically a replica of a Gibson Dove. I’ve played an array of Taylors and even Martins and I can’t find anything more beuatiful to look at and hear than this vintage Ibanez. I was wondering if anyone might know what the value of this type of guitar in mint condition would be. Thanx

Mahalo.. I also own a Ibanez Concord, made in Japan, #699, but I think it is early 70’s or late 60’s. I bought it second hand in San Francisco between 1972-75 sometime. Mine is spruce top, and maple blond a very beautiful guitar, and plays nice too..

I bought an Ibanez Concord 360 BX around 1974. It is black with a butterfly as part of the black pick guard. It also has beautiful inlays. I find it more difficult to play than a Taylor or Yamaha due to the high string settings. Bar chords are more difficult and in fact I brought it to a guitar store today to try to lighten up the feel.

      matteo

Rob, I am looking for info too about this model. I have the same guitar.
It plays fantastic, and the sound is simply phenomenal.

Mine is a sunburst I bought second hand in Italy some 10 yrs ago. The inlays on the neck are everything but charming…. some kind of shiny plastic triangles. Two triangles per fret. Or a rectangle with a diagonal line generating two triangle , if you want.
The headstock is similar to an epiphone h.stock, but larger> it features a nice tribal icon, that could resemble a sword with some riddles here and there.
How about yours? How does it play? Same features as mine?
      Cheers, Matteo

A buddy of mine just got a very strange Ibanez.
Solid body double cutaway nylon string! Maple or spruce carved top, mahogony back and sides. Gold plated engraved tuning keys on slotted headstock. MOP inlay Ibanez on headstock. 4 bolt neck, wood bolt covers. Piezo w. volume, treble boost/cut, bass boost/cut. Black anodized tailpiece.
Appears to be an S series body, never routed for pickups. No f-holes.
Not for sale, but he would love some info if anyone knows this model.
May be late 80’s early 90’s
Thanks in advance= Tis a mystery and a really nice axe!

    1. Re: Help Identify an Ibanez
      Shayne

      Pre-1987
Serial numbers built prior to 1987 have the month suffix letter, then the year code and then the production number.

For Example: #A680001 A- would represent january B-feb…ect…
68- would represent the year of birth
the last four numbers represnt that this was the first built in 1968

      1987-1996
Serial number built between 1987 and 1996 had a factory suffix followed by the year code then the production number
      for example: F910034
      F=Fugijen Japan
      C=Korea
      9 would be 89 ( 0 would be 90 1=91, 2=92…ect)
10034 would be the production number.

  9. 1981 Ibanez AS-50 - What is the quality of this guitar?

        Jeremy

These guitars are made with the same woods and P/U as the higher line AS’. These are great guitars…

NOT the newer Korean ones…the older Jap ones from early 80s.

          1. Re: This popular thread has been given its own page :... Doug
            Doug

Agree! The early 80’s AS50 models were manufactored in Japan of quality wood and workmanship. Some people consider these models actually superior to the ES-335. John Scofield is featured on the cover of The Fretboard Journal with one – can anyone here trump John Scofield? I have an 81 cherry red in origial and pristine condition. I handed it to a highly talented, respected, and profession guitarist the other day. He started from scratch as a guitar tech and right now is on a world tour. Bottom line, I opened the case and his eyes lit up and started ratteling off the technical specs. He then picked it up and went to town on it. His opinion: without a doubt, a superior instrument.
After Japanese production stopped and was picked-up in Korea. The quality of the instrument dropped significantly. I believe that production then moved to China where the quality dropped again.
If you can get an earlier Japanese model then get it. (opinion).

              russ mckenzie

In 1964 I walked away from an old (in those days) beat up Tele.

And I’ve regretted it ever since. Back in ’64 it was advertised at $240 dollars.

I thought at the time it was a pretty good axe. And I let it slip through my fingers to my rhythm player. And because it wasn’t bright and shiny as my locally made Maton Fyrbird. And my mother couldn’t see the value. So my rhythm player (who couldn’t play but he had a car and a loud amp) won. I wonder what it’d be worth today.

Now I’ve got my hands on an Ibanez AS-50 vintage 1981. And it’s a beauty. Electrics are problematic, but the craft-manship is superb.

This is an instrument that I won’t let slip away. Sometimes we have to make our own judgements. And be prepared to suffer the consequences.

              Regards

          Abel

The Ibanez Lonestar LS300 acoustic gutiar is my all-time favorite acoustic. I wish Ibanez would re-release the series — I’d love another one. Beautiful spruce top, rosewood fretboard, black all-strings-on-one-side tophead, and perfectly proportioned slim neck.
There are other more expensive guitars that have a better sound, but I’ve never found one that’s easier to play because of the thinner-than-usual neck.
The slick neck is the killer feature of the LS300, in my opinion, because it allows you to position even complex jazz chords a fraction faster than other guitars.
For fast chord playing it’s almost impossible to beat.

        1. Your Ibanez
          Anonymous

I’m not a massive expert but sounds like a 540s, from 1990. Despite the custom made inlay these weren’t actually custom made, you will see these listed as s540 but thats only true if they were post ’92 guitars. If i am correct about the model then you got a great guitar, if you don’t mind how much did you pay?

          Hope this helped- Toby

    Richard J.Stanford

I have a very old candy apple red Ibanez which I got about 15 years ago I have no Idea of the history.Small body, old tremelo with the old springs showing on top,tin pick guard with old flat style pickup switches. Definatly from the 50’s

      robert anders

I have a black Ibanez ex series with 23 frets. The ex is written small. On the top of the neck has the numbers 305933, and the metal plate that attaches the neck to the body has the number 9005102. Can you tell me anything about this guitar and how much is it worth. You can’t find too many parts for it so I am taking this will soon enough be a classic. There not like the other ex series. Thanks

      Hi,
I have a black ex series Ibanez electric, model # 9005012 and I would like to know anything about this guitar. Other than the standard pick-up’s, I think the guitar sounds awsome.

      Dominick

I have an Ibanez Talman electric guitar made in Japan.
      Serial no. f412840
I don’t know the model no.
It has a cream body with pearl trim and white cover guard
Birds eye maple neck with gold plated hardware
If you can tall me the model no. and value I’d really appreciate it.

      1. Re: Ibanez Talman elctric guitar ( what is it's value)
        Ben Henning

Sounds like my guitar. I am pretty sure it is a TV-550 series Talman. I’m not sure of the value because I got mine on eBay (used) for way cheaper, but you can go into any music store and ask them to look it up for you in the Blue Book. I think it’s between $700 and $1000. Hope that helps.

      duke

: Hi, Anyone out there know any info on the Ibanez RT150? Good points/bad points, I wanna know everything. Thanks.

Very well made guitar. Ibanez’s attempt at a more ‘vintage’ rg style. Smaller frets than an RG, more fretboard radius, no locking trem. PUPS are worthless typical Ibanez stuff, weak and horribly voiced. The 24 fret neck can be a curse for those missing that ‘sweet spot’ on the bass pickup. The longer neck pushes the pickup back so far it is more like a middle pickup setting than a bass one. Still a very playable guitar, and stays in tune well even without the locking trem. Obviously lends itself to changing tunings a lot more conveniently than a locking trem, a big plus for guys who don’t have a couple spare guitars laying around that are already tuned differently. If you can get one for $250 or less you are doing pretty well. I think the popularity of these should increase as these are very similar to the new Andy Timmons signature model Ibanez is selling. Basically the same guitar with different pickup arrangement.

    2. Re: info on Ibanez RT150
      brian

This guitar was out in 1992-1993? It is on the low end and one of the lasts of the Ibanez guitars to be assembled in Japan. The higher model is the Ibanez RT450.
Compared to the RX series… this guitar is more guitar than they ever were.

    3. Re: info on Ibanez RT150
      Roger

: Hi, Anyone out there know any info on the Ibanez RT150? Good points/bad points, I wanna know everything. Thanks.

I have one. I’ve had it for many years. I bought it new. I didn’t like the orignal pickups very much, so I replaced them with 2 Dimarzio Tone Zones, and a strat pickup in the middle position (this pickup came from an old American Strat that I modded). I had the frets replaced with jumbos, and added a rolling nut, locking tuners, string saver graphite saddles, and some custom wiring (push pull knob for more pickup selections). I also replaced the plastic jack plate with a metal one.

The body is made of Basswood, with a really thick finish (I know it’s very thick because I’ve chipped my guitar down to the wood in many places). The neck is maple with a rosewood fretboard, and is pretty round, more like fender neck than the flat Ibanez wizard or jem necks. It has a standard 6 screw tremelo, like a vintage fender strat.

With all the mods, mine is a killer axe, and I still use it quite often, even though I have a few newer and more expensive guitars.

        Mac

I bought one of these guitars back in 1994, and still have it to this day. I still use it on stage at shows. I do not know very much about the guitar, except that I bought it used, and I am the second owner, and that it was made in Japan. I would like to know any information on this guitar, but can’t seem to find much about this series on the net. If anyone could help me out here, I would sure appreciate it, as I still find playing this guitar very enjoyable, even though the original pickups are still in it, and leave a little to be desired. For me it has been a good axe to have around.

Alan, I don’t have any actual information but I do have an Ibanez Salvador acoustic. It is number 1115, and the headstock says Ibanez Seville. The label inside the soundhole says Ibanez Salvador. I have no idea how old it is.

  21. '82 Destroyer II neck and body wood?
    kenwah

I have what I believe to be a 1982 Destroyer II (ser# 82497). Does anyone know what the body and neck wood are? For those interested, it has a thin sunburst flame top (1/8" or 3/32"), cream binding, gold hardware, rosewood fingerboard, abolone/pearl hatched block inlays and plays sweet. I currently have a second hand set of Pearly Gates pickups installed with push-pull pots for coil splitting, but the neck is way too dark and the bridge is too creamy – these will come out soon. Also, I have seen Flying V style guitars from the same era with the same top that I would like pair up with my Destroyer for a matching set. Anyone know what the Vs are called?
