I’m looking for a set of tuning machines for an old Eko 6 string guitar (3 to a plate) with 33mm. spacing. New or used would be just fine so long as they work reasonably well.

      1961 I Believe ..Features: 10
      1961 Framus Texan 12 String

      Laminate neck / bolt on

Golden aged finish, no chips or scratches
      Sound: 10
      Booming, bright and crystal clean
      Action, Fit, & Finish: 10
Action is lowest I’ve seen in a 12 string, I owned a 1947 Gibson 12 string Jumbo and it was very difficult to play.

      bridge is beautiful
      Reliability/Durability: 10
I am very pleased with this guitar and due to the fact that it is 1961 I assume it will last

  2. Framus electric 1957-60
    Sherry

I’m wondering if anyone might have come across one like this?

I’m looking for a Framus electric guitar, custom made
in Germany in 1957-60. Cherry colored body, (almost
candy apple), laquer finish, 1 & 1/2" (?) inch thick body,
dark black frets, brass frets, pearl fretmarks,
laminated Maple neck, Wow bar all chrome (flat), 3
sliding pick-ups, chrome machine heads, locking,
slightly contoured shape. Bought in Germany
originally. The one I’m describing was orignally a
custom made one purchased in Ludwigsberg Germany
during that time period. I’m looking for one like it.

He told me that the pick-ups were adjustable and
adjusted by sliding either toward the bridge or
the neck. He also said that normally this guitar
came with only two pick-ups, but he had two items
added when he ordered it custom. An extra bridge,
    and the Wow bar.

After 40 years he can’t remember all the particulars,
except that the adjustment was on the outside. He is
guessing it was some kind of pressure slide. I can’t
verify any of it, because I’m no guitar expert. He told
me earlier today that it adjusted the treble and bass sound of it.
The guitar itself had also two knobs that adjusted volume and tone.
He said that if you had another guitar that you could slide the pick
up back and forth just the slightest little bit, and match the
resonance of the other guitar. He said somtimes it would only
take just a minor amount. I’ve seen Framus’s all over the place, but I’m beginning to think that this one has dissapeared. Just a note though. He also said that he bought this one from a Telefunken shop. He said that he took it back for adjustment of some kind or another and the Telefunken people fixed it perfectly. I don’t even know if this shop still exists.

: I have an original Eko Ranger 6 dreadnought. I bought it in England in 1981 for then 65 pounds. It was secondhand then, (in pristine condition) so I haven´t a clue how old it is. I suspect from the mid 70´s. It´s been a faithful friend and follower, nothing special soundwise, and the action is high, so it´s not easy on the fingers, but all the same it´s been with me everywhere. I now live in Copenhagen, Denmark, and recently purchesed a Finnish Landola JC 6000 dreadnought. This beauty is something else in looks, action and tone. I now want to sell my "old faithful" but haven´t a clue as to how much it is worth. As I said it´s an original Ranger 6, made in Italy, and in reasonably good condition. Can anyone out there help me? Thanks.

I would like to purchase it from you if possible. Haven’t a clue of the value, but I bought one in 1971 for £57 and sold it 5 years later for £30 as I couldn’t play it. I have actually learnt tp play over the last few years sort of and would like to be reunited with a guitar like the one I USED TO HAVE.

I’m not sure if I can be of any help. I was just checking the ‘Net for any info I can find about my Eko guitar.
I don’t know what your guitar looks like, as I’m not familiar with Eko guitars. Mine is the only one I’ve ever seen.
I don’t know what model my guitar is, but it is an f-hole, hollow body with 2 pickups, volume & tone controls
and a toggle switch. It is a reddish colour, which darkens towards the edges, and has a plastic, fake mother-of-pearl pick guard.
It still has the maker’s stamp inside, dated: Nov. 17, 1967. I don’t know the guitar’s value.

Hallo Leandro, I’ve also a beatiful Eko Pictor, it’s very difficult to found the original case, because in the ’70 unusually some sell the case in many case they buy the soft bag-case. You can try to read the year of fabrication inside the resonance box, there is a label. Can you send me the picture, I’m doing a restoration and I’ve missing the switch cap.

    Pee-wack

I’ve just got into playing bass and have recently bought one from a local retailer. I bought it with absolutely no experience of bass’ and was wondering if i got completely ripped-off or not. As im a newbie with bass’ and my memory is non-existent i dont even know what model it is. If anyone could give me a rough valuation on a Japanese made ibanez bass, 21 fret, 4-string with two knobs (one for tone, the other for volume) and with a pretty big chip at the bottom of the body, id be very grateful. Also there is a a phrase "roadster bass series" on the head and a serial number of G800805 on the back of the body. Im sorry the description is vague, but its the best i can do.

I also own a Marwin No. 1 archtop with HSC. My father bought it "used" in New York (probably in the forties). He was told it was owned by a prisoner.
I have also today checked the net somewhat and found one source which indicated the Marwin’s were made between 1935-40 by Harmony Co. in Chicago.
I have always wondered about the value, history, etc. of this instrument as three generations in my family have now played it.
If anyone has info to add, please share it. Thanks!

      1. Marwin Nr. 1 Guitar
        Phil Evans

I also own a Marwin Nr.1 guitar which I discovered in a pile of junk from an old house. The junk was about to be carted off to the dump. I rescued the Marwin, in terrible shape with no hardware whatsoever and a couple of cracks in the body. I refinished the body and replaced the hardware as closely as I could find. Still working on playability – needs pro setup but I discovered that it works great as a slide guitar. I will probably use it on some recording projects that I am currently working on.
I would be grateful for any history on these guitars that anyone can provide. Great piece of history!!

  7. Eko electric guitars
    Dave O.

Can anybody please give me some info on Eko electric guitars. I repair and make guitars as a hobby and I have been asked to restore an old Eko 6 string electric semi which is in dire condition. What I need to know before I make a start is will I be devaluing the guitar in any way by restoring it. I usually get involved with Fender / Gibson stuff so know nothing about the values of old Ekos. The guitar in question is from about 1963, brownish sunburst with two single coil (I think) pickups. The tone and volume pots are all broken and they look like they’re going to be a pig to get at. I haven’t got the guitar here yet it is coming over in about 4 days time. There is no name (except for Eko) on the guitar so I don’t even know what model it is. Any advice or info would be very much appreciated

I own an EKO Lancer Stereo that is part of the Lancer models (Lancer VI and Lancer XII)put out by EKO. Generally, these were two pickup solid electrics with tone and volume controls and two rocker switches, one per guitar horn. They had a tailpiece that looks a bit like the old Bigsby types. The stereo has two pickups that could be subdivided with separate tone and volume per half pickup. Yep, 4 tone and 4 volume controls, one rocker switch and two, three position rocker switches. Beyond that I can’t help you. But, I just discovered that EKO is back making guitars, so you may be able to get this info at their website. Try searchig for EKO. Regards,Ed

I have a Framus Starbass model 5/150 serial # 2149 that I need some info on. It’s a red to black burst 2 p/u,"Starbass" on the saddle all same as the Wyman bass. The only thing different is a springed trigger thing between and below the p/u’s that bounces the signal betweeen the p/u’s for a sorta tremolo effect. Anyone seen or heard of this? I have an old Framus 12 string acoustic guitar. It looks almost identical to a six string model they called The Texan. I’ve found pictures on the internet very similar to mine, but they all have decorative metal fittings on the bridge (which mine does not have). Can anyone help me on age and approximate value? Did they make a 12 string version of The Texan? Model 5/296, Serial Number 2031

I own the same model since the mid 60’s . sn is 13946, without any indication of a manufacturing date. I’ve bought it in Switzerland new for, if i remember well, about 400 CHF., quite expensive for me back then ..
She sounds still very good at the age of 35 ..

: I have a Framus 12 string as well. The year of manufacture is found on the inside label. You should notice a 5 digit number and then a space and a year number like 69, etc. The 12 string was not popular for production until the mid 60’s. Should you find a 12 string of any brand dating before the early 60’s most likely it was a custom guitar. Most of the experts have told me that the guitar is not an expensive guitar. My brother bought the one that I have out of a pawn shop in the 80’s for $100. If you find out anything to the contrary I would love to hear about it.

        Dave

I have the same guitar and the bridge is held on with screws. I looked on the inside and it appears that the wood would have to be pulled right off the guitar for the bridge to fail. I did observe that the bridge was pulling away from the body and was concerned about getting it glued on. Then I thought about it and perhaps the design is to have the bridge to give a little so that it prevents the top of the guitar from being pulled and distorted. Does anyone have any insight into Framus’s design?
        Thanks

          Jon

I have a 5/296 from 1966 that I bought new. It was made before the screw on bridge and bolt-on neck. It is a shade lighter and has an enormously better tone than than the "Texan" version. I also have one of those from 1971. I had a choice of the Framus or Gibson ($20 more, so not a big deal)but the sound of this particular Framus was better and it was easier to play. I have gigged with this off and on and it has a great presence. The tone has improved over the years. The bridge did start to come off years ago, but I had it professionally glued back on. It holds a tuning forever (unless your are standing by Lake Superior where nothing stays in tune)and someone will have to pry it from my cold dead hands to have it. I have only seen a couple of guitars like it and believe this version was only made for a short time.

Thanks for the information! Unfortunately my label is partially torn. I can only make outa 4 digit number (doesn’t really look like there eve was a fifth…but maybe). If there was a date next to it, that part is definitely gone. By the way, the model number is written in pen (not printed). Also, it says "Made in the Heart Land" on the label with a picture that looks like a factory. Anyway, thanks for your help. I bought this one at a yard sale for $10…it’s in pretty good shape actually.

I have owned a Framus Texan 12 String for a lot of years. Like the others, mine has a seal on the inside with Model 5/269 and Serial #13111 (in ink), with a 70 C following that. Stamped off to the side is "EX". I do not know what that represents. It has the "factory" picture, "Build In The Heart Land", and after the Model, Serial #, etc., the bottom of the label has "Framus – Werke – Bavaria", and under that "Made in W. Germany." There is also a steel back plate below the neck that says "Made in Germany." I bought it from a friend for $80.

          Hi,
I have a Framus 12 string and the inside label says made in Bavaria. The model = Texan 6/2951 M Or it is 5/2951 M it is written in pencil and hard to make out. It has a serial number stamped in ink which is 53388. Can you tell what this model # means? Was it made in 1951? or does the M stand for a year of manufacture? I have owned it since 1974/75 and it was previously owned by a person that played bars etc. It was a gift so I don’t know the cost but I got the impression it was a few, 3 or 4 hundred dollars.

They were never that expensive AFAICR. My dad bought a Gaucho, which I still own, brand new, in 1972 for £15 i.e. around £30 at the time. The now rarely make more than £120.

I’ve just bought a Framus 6-string acoustic. It’s model number is 7322 – it looks like a beginner’s instrument, 1/2 size, 18 frets. It’s really interesting, though, and sounds great. The back of the guitar is arched, like a violin, and I haven’t seen that before. The strings are colour- co-ordinated!! I’d love to know anything at all about its origin.
    Thanks, Damian Dowling

: Hey. I also have a Framus acoustic 6 string guitar. it was my grand fathers when he was a kid in the early 50’s! (old! jk lol) it too has an slightly arched back too. the only other guitar I know of that has an arcked back is Ovation. as for the color-co-ordinated strings I don’t know much about that. (I’m sure it’s been re-strung) My Framus is not half sized though. (it’s standard 22 frets) I don’t know the modle number. you said you wanted to know it’s orgin so I searched up this web site for you http://www.framus.com/history.htm The only other thing I can tell you is that they are made in Germeny and to never get rid of it because they are worth some money (depending on the modle you have) I hope this has helped you. thanks- Ben

I too have a Framus Texan 12 string. You can tell the year of manufacture by the serial number line in the guitar sound hole. The serial number is the 5 digit number and the year of manufacture follows it…like 69, etc.
The guitar is not an expensive guitar. Mine too has the curved back. Most have an adjustable neck. Dont try to adjust the neck yourself…take to a reputable guitar repair shop to have the neck adjusted. Overall the guitar has a nice tone…You might need new machine heads too. Get some good strings and have some fun with it. You most likely cant hurt it. Most of the materials are laminates so dont get it wet or leave it exposed to the direct sunlight. The one I have was purchased in a pawn shop by my brother in the 80’s for $100. Play it and enjoy it.

I have recently aquired an EKO Rangemaster 6 string solid electric. 2 gold pickups, gold glittery top, huge frets. All controls on top half of guitar, 4 push buttons to control pickup labelled: – 1+2, bass, treble, off. plus two rotary controls mounted perpendicular to the top of the guitar labelled volume and tone. It has a tremolo covered by a plate (similar to a telecaster ash tray but smaller)this plate has the word Rangemaster on it and on the back of the head stock it says ‘made in Italy’. The back of the guitar is gloss black. The neck is humungously thick and the guitar is extremely light. Oh and by the way, it plays loke sh** but looks dead cool. Who knows anything about it.

HELLO BRIAN. I PURCHASED MY STRADAVOX IN 1965 FROM ACHICAGO MUSIC STORE CALLED BIASCOS. IT IS A HOLLOW BODY ELECTRIC WITH TWO PICK UPS,TWO VOL,TWO TONE KNOBS AND A TAILPIECE/VIBRATO.THE SHAPE OF THE GUITAR HAS DOUBLE SHARP HORN CUTAWAYS,THE TOP AND BACK ARE CARVED SURROUNDED BY A VERY NICE BINDING OF TWO BLACK LINES UNDER WHITE,BUT THE SIDES HAVE A SINGLE WIDER BLACK LINE UNDER WHITE.THE WOOD OF THE BODY APPEARS TO BE SOLID CHERRY WITH A CHERRY STAIN.THE NECK HAS 21 MEDIUM JUMBO FRETS WITH MOTHER OF PEARL BLOCK INLAYS IN A EBONY FINGERBOARD SURROUNDED BY WHITE BINDING.THE NECK IS BOLT ON WITH ‘MADE IN ITALY’ ON A CHROME PLATE WITH 4 SCREWS.THE HEADSTOCK IS BLACK WITH ‘STRADAVOX’ PRINTED IN INLAY WRAPPED IN WHITE BINDING.ON THE BACK OF THE NCK IS ADARK LINE THAT GOES TO THE TOP OF THE HEADSTOCK.THE GUITAR HAS 2 ‘F’HOLES.THE BRIDGE IS THE ORIGINAL TUNEAMATIC TYPE.I DONT HAVE THE ORIGINAL PICKGAURD WITH STRADAVOX WRITTEN ON IT.I HAVE PUT A NEW NUT ON IT,AND PUT A GIBSON TRAPEZE TAILPIECE ON IT.ALSO IPUT SPERZEL TUNERS AND CARVIN C22 P/U.THE FINISH ON THE GUITAR HAS NOT YELLOWED AS DO GIBSONS.THE CRAFTMANSHIP ON THE GUITAR IS EXCELLENT.I CANT FIND A NUMBER ON IT. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND PLAY THE GUITAR REGULARLY,I KEEP FLATWOUNDS ON IT AND HAVE NEVER NEEDED NEW FRETS.I KEEPT ALL THE ORIGINAL PARTS THAT I MODIFIED.IHAVE ONLY MET ONE OTHER GUITARIST WITH A STRADAVOX AND THAT WAS IN 1971.I KNOW THAT THEY WERE MADE BY AN ACCORDIAN COMPANY WITH THE SAME NAME WHO IS STILL IN BUSINESS.IHAVE ALSO BEEN LOOKING FOR THEM OR OWNERS OF THEM WITH NO LUCK.I LOVE THIS GUITAR AND WOULD NEVER PART WITH IT BUT I BE INTERESTED IN EXCHANGING PHOTOS OF THE GUITARS WITH YOU.

Hello, I have an Italian made guitar called a Stradavox. I can’t seem to find any info on this guitar or the company at all. If you know anything about it please email me. Thanks

I’ve had this guitar since 1965. My Aunt bought it when I was 4. Actually she bought it for a friend of hers and at that time before she could give it to him they broke up. So I inherited it. Christy’s in New York couldn’t even locate information on this rare guitar. Can anyone locate more info, I’d appreciate it.
        Thanks,

Here’s what I’ve found after extensive research.

I have a Left handed Echo Ranger 6 which I bought new in the 70s. I cost me around £70, which was about 20% more than a right handed. The action was very high but when I checked the truss rod the kneck was way out. Fixing that and lowering the bridge gave it a pretty good action, comparable to the Stratocaster I bought some years later. Unfortunately the EKO kneck was almost twice as thick! Still it’s a lovely looking thing & I wouldn’t part with it.

      Dave,

I have owned an Eko Ranger 6 (Jumbo Acoustic) since 1971. It was just a few months old when I bought it. Built like a tank – strong, heavy, loud – with an action so high you could hardly hold down an open "E" ! However, it was my first steel string acoustic and, with a little help from the Beatles Songbook, I learned to play on that big mother! Just last year, a professional musician called by my office on a completely unrelated matter, saw the Eko in it’s case and told me that he used to own one too. He said his biggest regret in life was selling it! I explained about the high action, and that I had lowered the bridge as far as I could. "No problem" he replied, and took my guitar away. Next day, he returned it, explaining that he had simply shimmed the neck where it met the body, and WOW! The action is now nice and low, and the guitar plays as sweet as anything. A Gibson or a Martin it is not, and never will be, but it would never let you down. Try some nice D’Addario EJ16 phosphor bronze strings next time you change them – mmmm, nice!
Value? Well, I have recently seen a couple change hands on eBay at around £125 – £140 (around $200) so you’re not sitting on a fortune, but if yours is one of the original "Made in Italy" models (see sticker inside soundhole) it will only appreciate, even if not significantly. Hope this helps!

        Hi,
I have a 1963 EKO P2 acoustic, made in Italy. I found it in a skip. It’s the most beautiful little thing you ever saw and it plays easy and cute. No idea if it’s worth anything but its really nice to have something so sweet and old.

            jon

While working fighting off RATS in a very large crawlspace of a very old house in the area where money is not a problem to them I found a old dirty guitar case singing to my eyes. After killing off all the RATS I brought the guitar case out with me to show the home owner (an old italian man) in which he gave it to me as a tip for a job well done. I had no idea what was in the case in which the case stills has the JFK tag on it from Italy to New York until hours later i did open it up and found a Modello Eko Ranger 6 in very good condition. Talk about a beautiful guitar, WOW, I’ve played for over 20 years and nevered played anything like it in my life time and haven’t stop since the day i’ve had it. Here’s the problem, the sticker inside the soundhole shows it’s made in italy and is a Ranger 6. I’ve been doing my home work on all the sites and just can’t find the one I have anywhere. Theres a few different parts to it that shows it’s NOT a reissues from the 80’s and the one maded today in China since the end of era in Italy. The sticker inside the soundhole shows it’s made in Italy and stamped RANGER 6 along with a signature that I can’t make out. The head stock shows Eko written across the head stock and behind it spells out Made In Italy, the pick guard curves to a point at the bottom and the front reaches to the 17th fret around the soundhole. After countless hours and days trying to find a match on line I can’t find this beauty anywhere, although theres alot of them out there today it’s not the one I have. I would really love to know the year and the name of the maker. As for the VALUE, yea I would like to know but damn it’s riches feel GREAT in my hands. If theres anyone out there that know about these guitars please contact me.

The Kay Krafts were made in the 1930’s. The are predecesors of the Kay guitars . They are a collectable instrument but not a high quality one. they go on ebay for $200 – $400 and elsewhere for more.

Levin guitars was from 50’s to late 70’s sold in US under the name Goya Guitars.
In 78, I thing, the company was taken over by Martin.
Your guitar is probably made in Korea, and the value are maybe not so high. But if you like to play on the guitar and the sound is good, then why not by it, if the price is OK.

      1. I bought a Levin LDM 18 in 1980 in Munich
it sounded better than the ‘real’ Martin yo me
and that’s what counts – and I’m still very pleased with it

German, dude, German. They made some perfectly good archtops similar to the Hofners, Hoyers, Kliras and Framii of the day. – Nate

I am the owner of a semi-acoustic guitar, sunburst, two pick-ups. The only name on the whole thing is "Astro Trade Marke" with no othere references. It is probably a 60’s guitar. I cannot find any information on Astro, other than the Gretsch bass and a Vox Astro guitar.

      1. Re: Astro Meistergitarre
        Lothar Schrems

"Astro" means Anton Strohmer , who was an Master-Violin maker. His house still stands in Nürnberg / Germany.
His sons Max and Hans still build exquisit Classic Guitars and Violins. In the 60´s he made a lot of semi-acoustic and not so many Solid-body guitars. The Quality is normally- much better than Framus or Hofner Guitars.
Also, he made every Instrument by hand – thre are a few guitars, which were not so good. If your Guitar is signed "Meistergitarre" it is made by the Master himself and it is securely a Top-Instrument.
I play an ASTRO Solidbody since 30 Years and I never had a better guitar since, also I own a few Fenders and Gibsons, too.

Do you guys have any idea what the value of one of these, made in 1963 coupled with a hofner type 1505 (from 1956) pickup might be?

I recently was given an Astro Meistergitarre acoustic guitar from my uncle who was given the guitar from my granfather many years ago. Although we arn’t sure of the exact date of it’s purchase my grandfather was stationed in Germany in the late fifties until 61 when he purchased the guitar new. It’s in pretty bad shape (the pickguard is missing, the bridge is stripped and the head stock is missing the plastic piece). However, the paint is in ok shape and I can tell by moving up and down the neck that this is a truely well made guitar. I am very interested in resoring it but am having a lot of trouble finding plastic pieces. I am also having trouble finding any history on this guitar and any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Please email [email protected]. Thanks, Ryan

I bought a new Fender Kingman, (2006 model), on July 4th, 2006. I’ve already played out with it and are very pleased with this purchase. Along with active electronics, it has a built-in tuner.. Very convenient.
