Brad’s Page of Steel

The Lap Steel Guitar

The steel guitar differs from a regular guitar in the way that it is played. The lap steel guitar is held in your lap facing toward you. The strings are raised above the fretboard; rather than pressing them to the fretboard, a steel bar is pressed against the strings. Typically the lap steel guitar is tuned in one of several “open” tunings rather than standard guitar tuning.

Steel guitars were originally invented and popularized in Hawaii. Legend has it that Joseph Kekuku, a Hawaiian schoolboy, discovered the sound while walking along a railroad track strumming his guitar. He picked up a bolt lying by the track and slid the metal along the strings of his guitar. Intrigued by the sound, he taught himself to play using the back of a knife blade.

I have a Gibson triple neck console steel that I want to sell – it has 8 – 6 – 8 setup since someone (not me) changed the middle P-90 pickup to a 6 string model [the tuners and bridge are still 8 string], the middle "fret board" is 6 string. Sunburst with original case, but the legs are missing, but I have made legs that work. Seems to be from the late 1940s or early 1950s. Think Don Helms without the really big pricetag. Rob Mahoney

Hi there, This is an answer to an old post so you might already know how to set up a Fender steel. I’ve got a 1000 double 8 which has a great tone but is a big beast to cart around, which must make a double 10 even worse. I think they sound cleaner and have a more colourful tone than short scale instruments, but are difficult to keep in tune and a bit sloppy to play. I like the organic feel of cable guitars and find they have a lot more soul than say, an all-pull Emmons.
You can change the pedal setup easily on a Fender by shifting the cables about and adjust the tuning by turning the screws in the recess at the right hand end of the guitar when you have the pedal down. turn your guitar upside down to see whats going on!! It’s a good idea to disassemble the instrument and clean it up every now and again and keep it well lubricated.
My steel has 8 pedals and 6 knees which I added. My knees are self designed and a bit mad but work quite well with the benefit of teaching you how the guitar works both mechanically and musically. My guitar is set up like an Emmons often is and has from left to right: the first 3 pedals work the front(E9) neck tuned E, F#, G# B, E, G#,D#,F#. The A pedal raises B to C#, B pedal raises G# strings to A and C pedal raises B to C# and E to F# The other 5 work the Back C9 neck which is tuned F,A,C, E, G,A,C,E and go, A pedal: A’s to B’s = C major7th. B pedal: Low E to Eb= D9th. C pedal: G# to G, High E to F = F9th. D pedal: High A to B, High C to D = C major 9th. E pedal” low A to Bb = C7 #9. This set up allows you to use adjacent pedals together e.g. D9 and F9 = Eb diminished With more pedals and strings you could do more but that would mean taking your foot off the volume pedal and using two feet on the pedals, which is what players did in the old days. Putting knees on will help you get more of the sounds you’ve heard since the beginning of the 60’s. That being said, you can do a lot with just the A and B pedals on The E9th. and no pedals at all on the C6th. A lot of steel players think they need a lot of changes so it’s all got a bit silly unless you’re a rocket scientist and nobody fires you for playing too many damn notes!! The pedals on the C6 correspond to tunings often used on non-pedal steels and you can easily get a lot of chords with forward and reverse bar slants. My Knees are cable operated because I didn’t know any better at the time. They do the trick as I put in two stages of leverage for the lowered notes as Fender steels need a lot more travel on the lowered notes. If I was you, I’d get a couple of your pedals to give you more changes on the E9th. neck, or put on some Knee levers. My inside Knees work both necks. I have probably put more Knees on than anybody else. E9: Left and inside left : E’s to F and Eb, Inside Right: F#’s to G, Outside right D# to D. C6: Left Knee left A’s to Ab Left Knee right A’s to Bb Right left high C to B Outside right C’s to C# , but that’s because I’m crazy and wanted to do it to see if I could. I found better designs than mine after the fact on an American Fender Steel site but mine work very well anyway and are probably lighter, Weight being an issue already. I hope this has helped. It’s always good for me to go through the tunings so any more info I can give you is alright by me. I’m in Melbourne but I’m a Kiwi and do some gigs for fun and a bit of profit which is an interesting change from teaching and playing the Bass. Cheers, Rob

  8. 9-string guitar wanted
    Drew Ferraro

Looking to buy a "9-string" guitar:
A while back I had the opportunity to play (what I was told was called) a "Missouri 9 string". It was similiar to a standard 12-string – except that it is strung with the 3 lower strings (E A D) individually, and the upper 3 strings are doubled, like a regular 12-string. It was quite a fun experience, especially for me – based on the way I utilize the bass strings for accents.
Anybody have one, or know where I can buy one?

:The Fender 400 PSG was available with up to either 8 or 10 pedals I,m not sure of the exact number, although most of them were sold with just 4. Back in the late 50s the E9th tuning was just coming into its own and most of the players I knew were stll using a C6th or A6th tuning. The sound of these old Fenders is fantastic, especially when played through a Twin Reverb.

However, if you want to seriously learn to play a PSG, I would highly recommend buying a newer model as they are better built and the changer mechanism is light years ahead ogf the old Fenders.

Carter Steel Guitars down near Dallas TX manufactures a great student instrument with 3 pedals and 4 knee levers. Go look at musicians friend website, they sell them for around $799 complete with picks, volume pedal, tone bar etc. And they sound good.

            1. Re: This popular thread has been given its own page :... Jim
              Jim

Old topic, but maybe worth adding to:

Fender 400’s came with 4-8 pedals. Up to 10 could be installed as options. there are two versions – the 50’s/early 60’s 400 had a longer scale, bar bridge and nut, flat Jazzmaster-style pickups and chrome pedals. In mid ’63, Fender changed to a shorter-scale sunburst, with integrated changer/bridge (the "fingers" rock to alter the pitch), roller nut, Jaguar-style pickup and black pedals. Both have the same cable-pull changer that is really dated, but on the other hand is the easiest one to make tuning changes on, ever. It’s also a very stable guitar – stays in tune and doesn’t "twist" (called cabinet drop) like modern steels.

Both are great instruments. Fender’s standard tuning was A6, and the manual can be downloaded at Fender.com. the long-scale ones are known affectionately as "string breakers", as when the E9 tuning with two top chromatic strings came into style the mechanism/scale length combination cased a lot of 3rd string breakage at the string attachment point. "Hog Rings" – small metal rings – were added to attach the ball ends to the changerand reduce the problem, but theyreally aren’t made to be used in that tuning. they work GREAT tuned to the inside-8 strings of a C6 10-string tuning, and setting the pedals up as the 5, 6, 7 and 8 pedals of a two-neck steel’s C6 neck.

But what’s lacking are knee levers, so it’s a bit of a compromise. I play a ’63 burst with 9 pedals, 2 added knee levers, an extra pickup, and I use a B6 tuning that is set up to use the first couple pedals for E9 country-style changes, and the others for minors, 7th’s and the C6-type "swing" changes. It’s the tuning Sneaky Pete Kleinow used with the Flying Buritto Brothers.

These are really IMO the best sounding steels ever – but they are NOT for the faint-hearted or good as a country-steel beginner instrument. There are almost no tab, CD o video lessons covering them, and no teachers. You’re on your own. So for MOST people, a Carter Starter as mentioned is a better beginner guitar – it has everything you need to play pedal steel for years, and is amazing for the price. It has limitations as it can’t b changed around to different pedal setups, but for "normal" use it’s fine.

But if you want to blaze your own trail, Fenders are fun. There is a small group of Fender players on the Steel Guitar Forum that trades parts, tips, and can give all kinds of advice.

FWIW, the Fender pedal steel models:

              400 – 8 strings, 4-8 pedals
              1000 – two 8-string necks, 8-10 pedals
              800 – 10 strings, ? number of pedals
              2000 – two 10-string necks, normally 8-10 pedals.
PS210 – 10 string, more modern mechanism (but very unique), no knee levers like the others, only about a dozen or so made.

Hey, if you go to the Fender website, in the Mr. Gearhead section, click on Manuals, and you can download a 10 page manual for the Fender 400 that will tell you everything you need to know. Setup, tuning, etc.

    1. Fender Double Neck Pedal Steel
      Thom E Ross

I am looking for some information on a steel I inherited from my late aunt. I have been on ebay and steels there are going for $1500 to $2000 and they are not even Fender products. I am wondering if you could direct me to a place where I can find the value of my steel?

      Thanks,
      Thom

I have one of these can’t see the point of having lower strings. Do you hear any lower strings on the radio? Anyhow, I have the pedals split 4 – 4, C6 on the back and E9 on front. A-C-E-G-A-C-E-G and E-F#-G#-B-E-G#-D#-F#. Hmmm. In this format, the copedents are a bit too difficult to describe. On the C6, it’s like this. P1=C-C#, P2=A-A#,P3=E-Eb, P4=G-G#. That gives you a healthy mix of chord flavor to work with, what with double pedals and all.

      Hi Barry Sain:

In general, the only difference between 10 or 12 string tunings and the 8 string tunings required for your Fender 1000 are that you loose the lower strings.

Therefore, you don’t have the low notes to create fuller chords and also for single note playing.

But, don’t be discouraged. I’ve been playing a Fender 1000 since 1964 and I gotten used to the lack of the bottom two (2) strings (when compared to a 10 string model, such as the Fender 2000).

I use an E-9th and C-6 tuning on my guitar but I tune them slightly flatter so that less strings break.

If you have any questions, please contact me at your convenience.

      Regards,
      Al Gershen

      Hi Brad,
I own a Fender 1000 pedal steel guitar. I need help finding the
proper "rodding" for this guitar. I have found numerous listings
for a 10 or 12 string. It is a double neck with 8 pedals, no knee
levers. Would the pedals be the same configuration on an eight string?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again.
