Electric Guitar – History

Commercial Success

As with many inventions, the electric guitar
initially met with skepticism from
traditionalists–performers as well as makers
and audiences. But country and blues players
and jazz instrumentalists soon took to the
variety of new tones and sounds that the
electric guitar could produce, exploring
innovative ways to alter, bend, and sustain
notes.

The instrument’s volume and tones proved
particularly appealing to the enthusiasts
of rock and roll, which emerged in the 1950s.
While it was important to other genres, the electric
guitar was at the heart of the cultural revolution
that rock and roll symbolized. The media
capitalized on the image of the rock and roller
with his slicked-back hair, leather jacket,
motorcycle–and electric guitar.

Rock and roll music was particularly
associated with a new electric guitar design, the
Spanish-style solid-body. The earliest known
commercially produced Spanish solid-body is
the 1939 Slingerland. Around 1940, Les Paul
experimented with such a design, and in 1947,
Paul Bigsby teamed up with country singer
Merle Travis to design a solid-body guitar that
more closely resembled the ones we know
today. But it was radio repairman Leo Fender
who would be the first to successfully
mass-produce and market a Spanish-style
solid-body electric guitar.

The immediate success of Fender’s new
style of electric quickly influenced other
manufacturers to start producing their own
models. In 1952 Gibson became Fender’s first
major competitor, introducing its own
solid-body guitar with the help of celebrity
endorser Les Paul. The mass production of
these and other new models of highly desirable
electrics allowed teenagers across the country
to reinvent themselves in terms of a vision of
musical rebellion and independence.

Although many people thought that rock
and roll would be a passing fad, by the 1960s it
was clear that this music was firmly rooted in
American culture. And electric guitarists had
become the superstars of rock. Live
performances in large halls and open-air
concerts increased the demand for greater
volume and showmanship. Popular groups like
the Beatles and the Rolling Stones generated an
international following that verged on the hysterical.

By then, most rock guitarists were no
longer aiming to achieve clean, cutting sounds
on the electric guitar. They began to
experiment, and new sounds and textures, like
distortion and feedback, became part of the
guitarist’s language. Jimi Hendrix was rock’s
great master of manipulated sound. By using
techniques such as maneuvering the guitar’s
tremolo arm and playing close to the amplifier,
Hendrix achieved spectacular effects.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s guitarists
continued experimenting. Their new musical
vocabulary emphasized loud, raunchy power
chords, flashy solos, and overall volume,
becoming known as heavy metal. Eddie Van
Halen
experimented with sounds like “dive
bombing,” using the tremolo arm to drive the
guitar’s lowest note even lower. Hendrix had
done this and frequently forced the instrument
out of tune as a result. But by the mid-1980s,
inventor Floyd Rose had improved solid-body
guitar tremolo systems, making it possible to
“dive bomb” repeatedly.

The last several decades have also
witnessed the rise of professional female
electric guitarists. Thanks to pioneers like
Bonnie Raitt, women have earned an equal
place in what had traditionally been a
male-dominated field. Today, more than six
decades after bursting on the American musical
scene, the electric guitar still features in all types
of music and is played and admired by men and
women, young and old, throughout the world.

      doc holliday

your question on the 85 q2000 gibson?? it was made as a glam rocker by gibson for contention in that market. mine has kahler bridge and locking nut, 62 profile explorer neck and headstock, one i-500 max pick up in the bridge and one volume control. the color is panther pink and its value is over 800.00. the neck and body is mohogany and the fret board is ebony. the frets are larger than anything you can buy today. answer your questions bud?? have fun,,,,,doc…..

It also has f holes like a violin as well as the conventional round voice hole. I was wondering where can I find information on this guitar. I am not sure of the model #. I mostly want to sell it for a fair price and help pay some bills. Please let me know.

: : CAN U PLEASE TELL ME WHO INVENTED THE GUITAR….THANKS

lol, the guitar dates back to like 3,000 years ago. but Adolph Rickenbacher invented the electric guitar. i think that was the question you wanted right? the oldest guitar is like 3700 years old from baghdad i think. egyptians had guitars in cave paintings, during the renisansse in spain, they were some of the first people to document the guitar. i hope this answers your question… cuz i could make a whole report on how invented the guitar 🙂

replace the tuners with locking ones(just ask for locking tuners at a guitar store), and take it to a guitar store to be set-up professionally.

          the texas guitar company

if your label is on the neck block inside the guitar, and if "use only light or med gauge strings " is pressed into a brace inside the back, you have a copy of an old martin. some of these guitars are great, but as with everything in life, even the most expensive guitar can be worthless and unplayable. i use a percentage rating to determine how many guitars are professional grade if you were to see ten of them at once( one could be good out of ten, or nine or any other number could be good out of ten). any guitar made could turn out to be a gem, but the possibility goes down with price, time and place of manufacture. hondo is all over the map for reliability and quality.
if you ever want to sell it give me a shout and send some pics! thanks, robert

while some may think of hondo a cheap, the early models (70’s-early 80’s) were well crafted. I have a ’76 Explorer reissue from gibson and a early 80’s VIP series explorer from hondo and both play equally well. The hondo came with dimarzio pickups and the dealer added a kahler brass trem setup. The gibson is a little lighter than the hondo and as the original owner of both I can say they have aged equally well and both play great today. The hondo even came with a hsc that was better form fitted than the factory gibson case I must say.

In 1975 I got A Hondo steel string Acoustic for my birthday. The strings at the 12 fret were at least 1/2 inch off the neck. The intonation was terrible. I wouldn’t stay in tune. I couldn’t play a chord above the 5th fret without buzz because the strings were so high. My friends from High School still make fun of that crappy guitar!

              2. I have one of the first Hondo strat copys with a maple neck. I love it it plays better than most guitars ive picked up. I like it so well I bought a 1978 Les paul honey burst Hondo it plays and sounds just as good if not better than my nephews Epiphone Les paul plus top

I got a used Atlas single pickup guitar in 1966 for $30. I paid too much! After a couple years I moved on to much better guitars. As the decades rolled past I always wanted to get one again just to see if I could make it sound good knowing what I now know.
After much investigation I found that Supro, Atlas & Airline guitars were pretty much the same thing. Same basic pickup, bridge, body and 2 bolt neck. The Airlines like my Atlas have a rectangular headstock where the Atlas had the Gumby style.
I finally found one on Ebay a couple years ago and snagged it for $100. Unfortunately UPS broke the headstock off so I have yet to play it.
It turns out the neck is a steel bar with a thin wood veneer and the headstock is an injected plastic. I have been unable to find or neck or repair this one.
Below are links to the only 2 pictures I have of the original. They were taken in 1968 in Hollis, NH.
