Electric Guitar – History

Commercial Success

As with many inventions, the electric guitar
initially met with skepticism from
traditionalists–performers as well as makers
and audiences. But country and blues players
and jazz instrumentalists soon took to the
variety of new tones and sounds that the
electric guitar could produce, exploring
innovative ways to alter, bend, and sustain
notes.

The instrument’s volume and tones proved
particularly appealing to the enthusiasts
of rock and roll, which emerged in the 1950s.
While it was important to other genres, the electric
guitar was at the heart of the cultural revolution
that rock and roll symbolized. The media
capitalized on the image of the rock and roller
with his slicked-back hair, leather jacket,
motorcycle–and electric guitar.

Rock and roll music was particularly
associated with a new electric guitar design, the
Spanish-style solid-body. The earliest known
commercially produced Spanish solid-body is
the 1939 Slingerland. Around 1940, Les Paul
experimented with such a design, and in 1947,
Paul Bigsby teamed up with country singer
Merle Travis to design a solid-body guitar that
more closely resembled the ones we know
today. But it was radio repairman Leo Fender
who would be the first to successfully
mass-produce and market a Spanish-style
solid-body electric guitar.

The immediate success of Fender’s new
style of electric quickly influenced other
manufacturers to start producing their own
models. In 1952 Gibson became Fender’s first
major competitor, introducing its own
solid-body guitar with the help of celebrity
endorser Les Paul. The mass production of
these and other new models of highly desirable
electrics allowed teenagers across the country
to reinvent themselves in terms of a vision of
musical rebellion and independence.

Although many people thought that rock
and roll would be a passing fad, by the 1960s it
was clear that this music was firmly rooted in
American culture. And electric guitarists had
become the superstars of rock. Live
performances in large halls and open-air
concerts increased the demand for greater
volume and showmanship. Popular groups like
the Beatles and the Rolling Stones generated an
international following that verged on the hysterical.

By then, most rock guitarists were no
longer aiming to achieve clean, cutting sounds
on the electric guitar. They began to
experiment, and new sounds and textures, like
distortion and feedback, became part of the
guitarist’s language. Jimi Hendrix was rock’s
great master of manipulated sound. By using
techniques such as maneuvering the guitar’s
tremolo arm and playing close to the amplifier,
Hendrix achieved spectacular effects.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s guitarists
continued experimenting. Their new musical
vocabulary emphasized loud, raunchy power
chords, flashy solos, and overall volume,
becoming known as heavy metal. Eddie Van
Halen
experimented with sounds like “dive
bombing,” using the tremolo arm to drive the
guitar’s lowest note even lower. Hendrix had
done this and frequently forced the instrument
out of tune as a result. But by the mid-1980s,
inventor Floyd Rose had improved solid-body
guitar tremolo systems, making it possible to
“dive bomb” repeatedly.

The last several decades have also
witnessed the rise of professional female
electric guitarists. Thanks to pioneers like
Bonnie Raitt, women have earned an equal
place in what had traditionally been a
male-dominated field. Today, more than six
decades after bursting on the American musical
scene, the electric guitar still features in all types
of music and is played and admired by men and
women, young and old, throughout the world.

Hi, has anyone ever heard of a guitar company called ‘Joodee’..I’,m interested in a bass by the name of ‘Joodee Performer’..looks like a precision, plays like a precision. Any one got any ideas on their history/quality etc…many thanks.

Hi, Andy – Joodee is a Japanese brand, built in the 1970’s and ?80s by (I guess) one of the big Jap manufacturing houses. These are quality instruments, similar to the current Tokai range of Fender/Gibson clones. The Performer Bass I bought new in 1978 is still my main axe, and I wish I could find another for a back-up (a little decal on the headstock says "For Professional Use" – way cool 😉
Japanese guitars and basses circa 1980 have just about the best quality/price ratio ever, and Joodees are definitely worth looking out for.

Generally speaking I’m a guitarist but I have gig coming up where I’m needed to play bass. 2 friends kindly offered to lend me there instruments, a Yamaha TRB 5 string and a 70’s Daion P-Bass copy. After playing both I chose the Daion hands down. Besides the fact I get confused on 5 strings, The Daion is solid as a brick outhouse both in sound and feel. It only does one thing – rock, but it does it far better than the vey nice Yamaha could hope for. It seems in the 70’s Daion were making Fenders better than Fender were making Fenders.

Try going to major guitar web pages, then click on their history part of their web. I would go to these 4. rickenbacker.com, gibson.com, epiphone.com and fender.com.
Rickenbacker was the first to put magnetic pickups on a guitar. It was call the pan, because that’s what it looked like. That was circa 1935. A real good book on it is (Electric Guitars- the illustrated encyclopedia)it is a hard cover book I found at Sam’s Club (Wal-Mart)about $20.00. Good luck on your project.

      J-P

I used to own a Vision guitar back in the 80’s. I’m desperately looking to purchase one for my collection. The one I had looked a whole lot like the Carvin V220. It had these funky pickups with rails instead of pole pieces. Any info or leads please email me. From what I remember it was a very solid guitar. Gotoh tuners and it had a tremelo that I think was made by Vision(looked like something off of a Strat). Definately not a Floyd Rose!

        Rod Davis

I have a Vision solid electric, rather like a Strat, black, with humbuckers and two other pickups, also whammy bar(which I have currently misplaced), I don’t play it much and I could be persuaded to sell it or maybe exchange it for an electric semi-acoustic suitable for jazz. If you are interested please email me.

Now I can put a year to that guitar when it was made. Unfortunately I still play this guitar and love it very much. I just love the tone and the color of the guitar. Good luck to your search and I do hope you find one. Not sure if you have heard of Oribe guitars, the sound is superb and loud. Here is a link if you’re interested http://www.oribeguitars.com

I have had 3 of Mark XX’s; all blond, prices are lower for "painted" guitars.

Guitars were of American design and handcrafted by the Yamaki Corporation in Japan. The Mark XX is the top of the line guitar from a very, very good manufacturer.

        1 – original price for the Mark XX was $799.00, case $100.00 – total $899.00 – purchased in 1981.
2 – Purchased at auction MINT Mark XX – emphasize MINT (NO scratches – no corrosion – clear finish, nice wood match) – softshell case – $642.00 – purchased in 2004.
3 Purchased near mint Mark XX from pawn shop with original hard case – $475.00 purchased in 2004.

        Hi!
I have been playing metal for about 10 years. I find it’s good if you grow your hair really long, dye it blond and tease it on the top. I LOT of hairspray will help too.

Be sure to get lot of the stuff on your hands.

There is a modification you can do called a lobotomy that will also help you get the right "attitude" in your playing.

Or you could do it the easy way like Steve Vai did and study music theory and scales for 10 or more years until you have them mastered.
        Your choice.
        Hope this helps!

sears and montgomery ward both came out with cheaply made beginer guitars if you could send a picture i can give you a more accurate evaluation of the price taking in the condition and aesthetics, but its probably worth about $300 which is pretty good considering they were sold for ( i think) $40

Sorry, I’m not sure on the value of the Airline guitars, but I have heard of them. They don’t seem to be on ebay either. I am interested in buying one though, if it’s the same model as Jack White’s from The White Stripes. Please email me if anybody has any information on how I can get one. Thank you.

                    Beware of auction pricing…
The celebrity cachet of these once-cheap guitars has outrageously inflated eBay results of late. Some of the "Jack White"-like guitars (the "best" Resoglass model, with fiberglas body) have (allegedly) been going for $2000 and up … however I’ve seen a couple in great shape for $700 or so. Still, that’s probably twice what they’re really worth in today’s market. They sold for $70 and under in the ’60s in the Montgomery Ward catalog. Airline electrics were made by Valco, Supro and National.
The brand of comparable value to pre-White Stripes-mania Airlines would be ’60s Danelectro/Silvertone electrics, which are still more affordable, and offer the same retro vibe — ’60s style and tone out the wazoo.
Side note: I bought a 1964 Kay Catalina recently for $100 on eBay, misidentified as "possibly Airline." And I gotta say, it’s a wonderful guitar for the money; very playable, sounds and feels good, and it’s red-and-white! It’s an instrument Jack White would probably be proud to thrash around on.

Jack’s playing is more about attitude than gear. He’s said he’d never play a new instrument, used/older ones have more soul. I think you could get the same effect as Mr. White with any good vintage guitar, like the one I found, or a brand-new cheap Indonesian Stratocaster, or a Danelectro reissue. All can be had for well under $125. As with any individual guitar, once you hold it in your hands, your mileage may vary.

You can play White Stripes songs on the cheapest guitar imaginable, is all I’m saying. That’s Jack’s aesthetic in a nutshell.

Go to a used instrument store (a well-stocked one) and play around with everything they have. Then go out and buy the one that feels and sounds (and looks, in that order) best to you.

I was given a red Airline and a Silver tone amp in 1968 by some good guys at school in Eldridge Iowa when I left my first electric guitar in Canada. I still have the guitar today – an aquaintence here in the UK built guitars and reckoned he’d seen the airline in a collectors magazine valued at around £400.00. Apparently it was built for the department store market by National. Have you noticed the band Red Stripe are using them.

Don’t listen to that, I have 11 bass guitars including a starter bass by wards or whoever made it. I sold one of my Airline Bass guitars, had a sliver pickup and the wooden bridge that was also a pickup. Played very well, anyway I got 900.00 for it. You’ll suprised to know that some are worth 1500.00, depends on the shape it’s in. Just in case I’m looking for daul 15" Kustom amp, roll & tuck, at least 200 watts, prefer Blue sparkle, with the 2 chrome ports.

It was originally red but I long ago stripped that off and underneath is a much prettier curly maple veneer which now has a lovely ‘warm’ patina to it. The neck is a bit on the thick side, more like an acoustic, but is surprisingly fast. I love it’s simplicity and it screams thru my 1969 Sunn amp. Value? I’m not sure- these were sought after in the 80’s by punk bands who appreciated their powerful, squawky tone. Besides being a present from my beloved Grammy, it’s one of my most prized posessions and I wouldn’t give it up for the world!

I have an airline guitar sold by Montgomery Wards in approx. 1968. It is a solid maple top, I think, and is blonde with the rest being dark mahogany. I just played ?? it tonight at a jam session. I have had it since new. What is it worth? It could be for sale. E-Mail me please.

        2. Re: vintage guitars
          magjag

The airline was a model built by the Harmony company from the 50ies thru the 60ies with one, two or three pickups. Those from the 50ies had a more LesPaul like design while those later got a really weired looking shape (reminds me on som BC Richs). Thanks to Jack White from "White Stripes" and other garge bands this guitar comes back into the flashlight. Currently you can trade ist for about 350$ but in one year, I bet the prices will at least double, if the success of "White Stripes" remain.

I have an old airline guitar in my family room. It’s a really cool looking piece of furniture. The # inside the guitar is L 5774. Does anyone have any idea the year on this one? It’s an acoustic hollow body with f holes and a Les Paul type shape.

Basically your all hunting for the guitar which jack white has made famous so ill tell you all i know.
                  It is a 1964 Airline jetson res-o-glas.
It was made by the valco company and is available under the names of national and supro as well as airline, however the national and supro versions do not have the same headstock as the airline. The airline brand was created specifically for the montgomery wards department store. The cost of an airline jetson changed very little after the valco company liquidised in 1969, until mr jack white hit it big. Now these guitars trade fairly regularly on e-bay. The current market value is around $450 and this is a worthwhile investment believe me. The value of these guitars will only continue to rise especially if jack and meg carry on as they are. happy hunting.

                    Emma

Actually, Jack White hasn’t had that guitar since his first album. (Which isn’t as good as Elephant.) Since his second CD, he has played with a 1950’s Kay Hollowbody. He tunes it very high for a unique sound.

                    1. Re: That's not really true
                      adam

Thats not true..he plays that on all of his songs. he uses the kay for slide guitar..like for death letter .. little bird..etc.. all his normal tuned songs he uses his airline..even at live shows he uses his airline..then his kay for slide.

                john york

                :
: : katie i admire your selection in good guitars. it is hard to find these guitar especially the year 1966 or 1967 like jack white’s they are hard to find. a few places to go is a auction site prferiabley ebay.com. or you could go to a pawn shop or what some would call a swap shop if you play your cards right you can jew the boss down because if a guitar does not say fender or gibson on it and it says airline or harmony on it they think it is crap. so you may get it cheaper than you think, if they don’t have one just tell them what your looking for and take a copy of a picture of the guitar just so they will know what you are looking for and leave your phone or contact number on the picture and you would not believe how many calls you’ll get it may not be what your looking for but you could find some cool guitars. i just recently found a airline guitar (not like jack whites it is a little earlier or later than jack’s) but i am going to try to get it because there sound is awesome i am going down there to try to bargaain really bug and beg for it i could get it for like 150 when they were wanting $250 so i am going to go when i know the boss is there and bug them to death but just do your best and let everyone know what you are looking for in your town and they may find one. also check at yard sales especially at old houses where people are cleaning out there attics you would not believe what you’d find. and at like these auctions they have on houses being foreclosed because some old person died you can find interesting guitars at places like that.

                p.s. good luck sincerly,

I’m trying to locate a book on the rise of the electric guitar written by Steve Waxsman titled "Instrument of Desire". I saw him interviewed on the Jim Leher hour last year. I believe he is an historian at Harvard,Yale or it could be Princeton. I’m in Australia. Many thanks.

I’m a high school stundent in Michigan. I’m currently writing my term paper on the history of the electric guitar and I have found Mr. Waksman’s book: Instruments of Desire: The electric guitar and the shaping of musicial experience very helpful. You can order it through several online book stores such as Borders.com or Barnesandnoble.com. Hope that helps.

I have a black electro/acoustic Daion D124EB (dreadnught type) which I bought in Australia about 14 years ago. It says it was "Made in Korea for Central Musical Instruments Australia".
It had an overhaul a few years ago as the neck was bending
and I wanted the action lowered. It has always had exceptional deep tones and is an all-round great guitar, although I wouldn`t use it plugged in as it`s electronics aren`t exactly up to scratch…. then again, it was a budget guitar and I don`t really like the sounds of any electro-acoustics when they are plugged in.

I have recently acquired a Daion Legacy guitar and am trying to identify it. I’ve talked to a couple of people who know quite a bit about Daion guitars but they aren’t able to tell which model it is: L9, L99, or L999. It has two snowflakes side by side between the 4th and 5th frets, has a solid cedar top, and has the standard dark brown finish with dark wood binding. Does anyone know which model it is or know anyone who has a Daion catalog which identifies the three models. I can email images of the guitar to anyone who wants one.

I recently bought a Diaon L-99 and the way you suscribed your guitar it sounds the same as mine. So your guitar should be an Diaon L-99 BUT inside the soundhole there is a small print were it’s written L-99, just one centimeter big.

          Good luck

I have a daion legacy model 999 s/n 103 059 with also some feint marking which looks like AT:55.
I bought it new in about 1981, it was a first release I believe, Originally, it had a brass nut and brass bridge, but replaced these many years ago ( at Kirk Lorange’s advice). It is a beautiful little piece, has some wear, and some damage ( it was at the receiving end of a thrown knife, nobody ever owned up though), believe it is a copy of a Martin 1938 or D38 model , but not sure.

it’s shure no L 999, because it’s not similar to the one I’m happy to own. But the Number is stamped inside on the bottom right under the hole so you shuold be able to check it.

        Steevie Weevie

Mike — Steevie here with a l’il update… There’s a friend of mine who used to tour with a number of
bands back in the day who says when he got off a plane in Tokyo, some Japanese Daion reps GAVE
them Daions to play in their concerts! My serial number on my Power XX bass starts with "84" which
I’m told makes it an ’84 bass (a few were sold in 1984). These last few basses WERE Power XX-B
basses, but they dropped the "B" on the nameplate. I’ll send you some pictures that’ll get you all
frothy and frosted up in Daion bass juice — sproutin’ the SERIOUS wood!! –Steevie

      2. Re: Daion site
        Steevie Weevie

Nice Daion site — I happen to own one of the Daion basses nobody EVER mentions — the Power
Mark XX. It looks identical and plays/sounds the same as a Mark XX-B (which I used to play) but
it has a few cosmetic differences. On the headstock, for example, there is no Daion logo (tuning
fork) but a very elegant looking "Daion" name painted on. I was told my bass was one of the
last ones ever made by Daion (it’s an ’84) and aside from a couple of small dings, it’s in great
shape. I play an Alembic, Ken Smith, Musicman and of course, Daion — people wonder what
the hell it is until they hear it — and THEN the begin to UNDERSTAND! I had mine hot-rodded
with 2002 EMG actives and it is nothing less than a fiery volcano belching forth fire and bombs
from the very bowels of the earth — a total BITCH! –Steevie

My son (helps at a music store) brought a Flying V home today. Some kid’s Mom drove over it in her garage and the remains, sans humbuckers and tones/switches are right now in my lounge. It’s a lovely looking Jet Black, High Gloss instrument with a bolt-on neck. (neck is busted bad but the rest is OK except for the pilfered parts) Don’t you hate it to see one of these black beauties in distress. I had guitars 35 years – I’ll see what I can do. I´m Philipp Moonen, the son of Willibert Moonen from Germany. It´s 8 years ago, since I met Hans and Lou in Germany, but I´ve heard that they come again this September when my brother Clemens will marry Anika in Swiss. So I will meet them again.
I´m very happy, that my plans take me to Australia in October or November this year. Two years ago I finished my studies and wanted to become a teacher for sports and biology, but in school as a teacher I was overtaxed and always in a bad mood, so I cancelled my training. It wasn´t how I have had expected to be. I tried to get a new training to become a sound-engineer, but I might have been too old for the training and they chose another person. Later I decided to get away from Germany a little bit to think about all from another point of view. And the idea was to do that in Australia for one year like lots of people, coming for Work&Travel. I want to find different kind of jobs, drive around Australia with a van that I want to buy there and do a lot of windsurfing, which is my absolute favourite sport. I have seen the video of Erika, Christel, Hans-Willi and Hans-Willi2 and all of you nice guys. You seem to be a nice family with lots of fun and satisfaction. That’s coo
        !
It´s my 30th birthday on September the 17th and I want to party with lots of friends that age and my trip to Australia. Meanwhile I have an Australian flag in my room and a big map of complete Australia. I also bought the “Lonely Planet”, the best guide book you can get, to plan my t
        ip.
In August 15th to 21st there is the “World Youth Day” in Cologne (http://www.wjt2005.de/index.php?id=5&si=0), the city in Germany where I have studied and where I live for 7 years. I will work there as private sound-engineer in the KHG (http://www.khg-koeln.de), where lots of events are planned for that week. We will have concerts and discussions, etc. In the KHG I have my storage for my little music-rent & discjockey-company, that I built up the last 5 years and with which I financed my studies. My website is http://www.mls-verleih.
        e .
If you know some Australian people, who wants to come to Cologne for the World-Youth-Day, they can contact me, if they need a place to stay or if they need someone to show the city or to give information. They should also have a look at the concerts we make!

I´could write so much more about me and what I think about now, but that should be enough for the first time. I hope you or someone write back.

        Nice greetings from Germany!

If you can remember the very first Duran-Duran video on MTV, whasshisname is playing a lipstick red Daion bass. I hated Duran-Duran, but I would tolerate that video just to get a glimpse of the only other Daion I ever saw being played.

I bought a brand new black bolt-on neck bass in 1981 for the enormous sum of $400 (the aluminum neck Kramer I also lusted for was only $350). The only guitar I have ever owned that played better was a Rickenbacker 4001 that was undoubtably one of the first of it’s kind (four digit serial number…and I sold it for $175 because it was getting beat up on the road, aargghh). The only thing I ever owned that sounded better was a jap Spector. I’d rather have the Daion than either of the above, though. If anyone wants to sell one of the bolt-ons, I’m buying! Mike C.

I saw a dainon Gazelle in a shop in Alabama and bought it for 325.00. I knew I had seen something similar before, but not until I went to my next Widespread Panic show did I realize where. JB played a daion power markxx for years, and I’ve even a pic of him jamming with a Headhunter 555. Anyhow, I’ve got 2 mark xx’s, a headhunter, an L-999 and a Gazelle. Absolutely sweet guitars.

I bought a new Daion ‘Model 80’ in about 1981 in Charleston, SC. at a local music store.
It is a beautiful but unorthodax acoustic. Excellesnt guitar. The neck adjustment screw is in the body, fine gold colored tuners, an oval shaped sounding hole, all dark wood body.
I probably paid to much for it at that time (1981) $550, but just liked the guitar and the way it looked and sounded.
Will send a picture if anyone is interested, as I still have and use the guitar.

ok fellow daion owners here’s what i can dig up. from a very reliable source the story i got was that daions were built in japan and germany in the late 70’s and early 80’s and distributed out of austin texas.they apparently were trying to do battle with bigger luthiers ie.alembic and martin. by moving the building where labor was cheaper but still good. these instruments had a high ticket price if i understand… but lets just say they lost the battle. the company folded and these guys were literally selling these beauties out of hotel rooms. i love mine and i have owned basses ranging from fenders to handmade schectors to custom warwicks. i love this bass. hope this helps.

Notice that these guys want you to call for a price. All I know is that I played mine professionally 4 nights a week for 5 years and it plays as well now as it did then, although I did have to have the frets redone halfway up the neck. To all of you that do have a Daion, you’ve got a truly well built and beautiful instrument to enjoy for a lifetime. Enjoy!

I have the most amazing Acoustic DAION guitar. I bought it from my uncle’s music shop in 1984 in Newfoundland.
I have had so many compliments over the years, and there have been musicians who have wanted to buy it from me,
however, this gal isn’t selling….it’s that great of a guitar!!!

There isn’t a great deal of information on these gems, is there?
I do know that there were manufactured in Japan and that Ray Bensen, the lead singer for the country band:
"Asleep At The Wheel" did quite a bit of promotional work for this guitar. I have yet to meet another person
that has one… so, if anyone knows anything substantial about the Daion, like what the name means, or the symbol represents
that would be great. I cannot understand for the life of me why they stopped making this great sounding guitar.

: I likewise have an Anea acoustic guitar which I purchased new in about 1984 at Atlanta Discount Music in Atlanta. They were selling new Anea and Daion guitars side by side, and told me that they were the same instruments, simply with a change of label.Mine is labeled Model TN-27/T. I have no idea what these letters and numbers refer to. It’s shape is most similar to what is often described as a "Grand Concert" model,a very pinched-hip, womanly shape with an extremely rounded back. I opted for the model with the built-in bridge pick-up. Volume and Tone pots are on the top side, near the neck joint, I do not know the manufacturer of the p/u, but it is high quality. Price new was $360.00, with form-fitting hardshell case. I seem to remember one other model being offered, larger, closer to a Jumbo or Dreadnaught style. Likewise, two different finishes were offered, a dark brown, or a more natural blonde.I have never seen an electric Daion/Anea guitar or bass, however, I do remember seeing several country musicians playing the same model Anea I have. I love this guitar, over the past 25 years I have played it more often than my other acoustics, consider it my everyday instrument, and wouldn’t dream of parting with it. It is surprisingly LOUD for its size and has a bright, even tone that is somewhat jangly, but has mellowed over the years. I prefer medium-high action and brass strings, and the guitar suits my favorite acoustic music styles(Piedmont blues and country string band tunes) perfectly. No dead spots, but like most high quality guitars it is sensitive to temperature and (particularly) humidity changes-I have had the bridge re-glued twice and a new bone nut constructed. It also has some dings in the finish, and a small crack in the top(a souvenir of too many beers and a newell post), but these do not affect its playability or sound. That’s about all I can say about my Anea, except that like several others I have always wondered why they never became more popular, though I was once told that the company had pretty significant distribution problems. Hope this helps!

The story he told you is correct. I dated Anea’s older sister from 1980-85. I went to the Waco Factory to pick out my 81 Caribou. They were very well made and sounded great!

The quality is great, pickups are some form of humbucker and it plays great.

I own a Daion bass that I bought several years ago from my cousin. He plays guitar and bought it just to keep a bass around in case someone wanted to jam. He bought it from a music store that was going out of business in St. Louis, Missouri. I just started playing again with some friends after letting it just sit there for years. I get lots of compliments on it. I’ve only seen one other Daion, another bass that looked just like mine except that it was green (mine is burgandy), and it had all four tuning keys on one side of the headstock, whereas mine has two on each side. I saw it in a pawn shop here in Jacksonville, Florida, and I really wish I had bought it. I found this site in my own quest for info on Daion. I definately won’t part with mine. It’s a great instrument.

I am also seeking info. I got an acoustic for next to nothing 8 years ago. It’s cut away on the high E side
but also on the bottom (the entire body curves in). As my knowledge increased I discovered it has a
solid spruce top and a flamed maple back. The headstock is also flamed. It’s awesome! It originally
had a brass nut and saddle. The bridge needed work and now sports a bone saddle. The sound hole
is oval. I have worn a hole through it I’ve played it so much. It still sounds great. It is just starting to
need the frets filed. With medium strings I can beat the heck out of it and strings rarely snap. No one
seems to know a thing about Daion. I found some japenese sights but the contents couldn’t fully be
displayed. There were pictures and the Daion symbol is there.

I have an acoustic that I’ve had since the 80’s.I was told they were hand made in Japan by one person at a time. The one who made the guitar left his mark engraved very small in between the tuners,I heard that they were made from the late 70’s to about 85 or so.I believe the company that made them is making Gretshes there now. They have the brass nut and they are one of the best deep sounding guitars I’ve ever heard.

      Keith Mathews

I have a 1965 Hagstrom 1 (baby blue) that I have owned since I was 12 years old. I am now 53 years old. My guitar teacher was the original owner and sold it to me. It is in very good condition with the naughahyde back cover slipping away from the body in 2 places. That is being fixed by an expert right now. It plays great and the lucite front has NO scratches.
Would have an approximate value on this piece??? I plan on keeping it, but was just curious…

  13. Hagstrom
    Mike Cook

I am trying to find out if there are any swedish Hollow body Electric Hagstrom guitars still around. I had one, but it got stolen during a trip to New York, and i’ve never seen one like it. The problem is i’m not sure of the year. I think it may have been from the 1950’s or 60’s. I was told that is was collectors item, and constantly increasing in value. If anyone knows of a hagstrom like this please E-mail me and tell me where I can find one. Thank you.

      Tim Judd

:I have a Hagstrom electric hollow body from the late 60’s I believe. It is a beautiful instrument. It has all gold plated hardware, including the Bigsby apron, keys, and the name on the headstock is also gold. It is in mint condition and has the original tags and warranty card that hang around neck.I have no idea what it is worth because I got it from a relative. I am currently trying to find out. It has a sunburst finish and the woodgrain pattern really stands out.
I would probably sell it after finding out what it is worth. If you think you would be interested, I will forward you a picture in a few days. Tim

      Graham Burkin

      Hi Andre

If the guitar you have has a metal couloured pick guard it is most called a "Savage".

This model came out in the early eighties, I bought a "Savage" Bass in 84 and still have it.

Some came with a Kahler tremelo too, I even saw a bass with one!!!!!

I believe it has a hard ash body, Rosewod neck, jumbo frets, and if the guitar is like the bass it sustains forever.

At the time it was a mid priced instrument about 3/4 of the price of an Ibanez artist.

      Hope this helps

      Graham

I have a Daion Power Mark XX. I has a serial number on the back, it is natural finish w/ 2 humbuckers and 4 wood nobs with 3 2 way switches.
I don’t know a whole lot about them except that they were imported by a company from Waco Texas that is not in business anymore.
They are Japanese made, and aparently, mostly collectors have them. They were built in the 70’s and early 80’s. I think the guitarist in the band Slade had one.
They play and sound great. There are some auctions on ebays that
sell them once in a while. Mostly acoustics and semi-hollow bodies. Check out the auctions, they sometimes have old brochures for sale. : i have one , but know nothing of it .! can anyone help, serial # is 10768 can i date it with that serial # ,… its bright yellow 2 hum. b. pick ups. 4knobs ( gibson style ) 1- 3 way switch, 1 split switch.. strings thru body like a tele. all original 98% perfect never played W case. thanks andre

I have a Daion Guitar & Bass too. They came throught the same ltttle guitar shop in my home town so I bought them both. I know jack-crap about them other than they’re the best playing guitars I’ve ever owned. I’m not sure the modle number because they’re so blured. The body design is nothing I’ve ever seen… It’s got two lobes at the bottom and two horn like things at the top. if you’d like I’m sure I could get them scanned and send you a picture and maybe see that we have the same guitar ?? An idea that might help you out. at anyrate I’m trying to find some stuff about mine as well…

I’m looking for a Daion electric (that I should have bought when I had the chance 20 years ago)… From what I recall, it was TRULY sweet, was red in color, and body-wise,sort of resembeled BB King’s "Lucille".

Any thoughts on how I can find this axe are appreciated.

What you are looking for is a Daion Headhunter 555, a semi-hollowbody with brass hardware and string-through body, usually redwine paint with mahogany fretboard. Righteous sustain but the glue on neck (as opposed to neck through body) creates intonation and tuning problems. I have only ever seen two in my life, and have purchased both. Peace.

I’ve got one that I might be convinced to part with. it’s an excellent guitar. I wont say it’s never been played live though, and I did buy it used. it’s got excellent tone and sustain, but the neck’s not my personal favorite ( I prefer satin finishes for my style ) . It’s not the color you were looking for, but the finis is in good condition, and the neck is right on straight. If you’re interested, drop me a line.

: I have a beautiful one of these – 1975 (I think), excellent condition complete with it’s original plush lined hard case. It is a truly lovely instrument and the comments on harmony-central.com rate it right up there with a Gibson 335 / 355. It has a lovely flamed wood grain body in a dark honey coloured finish. I’m going to be selling it or trading it for a good acoustic since I’m really more of a finger picker – but I couldn’t resisit this one when I saw it some time ago – it’s available if anyone is intersted. (I am based in New Zealand).

            I have one too!

Had it for 16 years my brother bought it second hand maybe 5 or 6 years before that.

it’s the best, better than most les pauls (originals) and cost my brother about £150.
I’ve had it sanded and oiled, and reset by a guitar builder and it’s better than ever now.

love it, it was called JooDee Artist
it was black with full binding front and back gold platet hardware.

              tepe7

I have one here in Finland. I bought it in the late 70’s from local music store. It’s color is sunburst with cream scratch plate. It was considered as the best Gibson copy at that time (Ibanez and Kasuga were far behind). I have changed di marzio pick ups to it.

it is excellent to play and have great sound, but I have no idea about it’s value today 🙂
