how to tune a junior itchild's electric guitar

I purchased my grandson a Hondo electric guitar last Christmas. He didn't use it until now and is taking lessons. His instructor says it is impossible to tune this guitar. The guitar loses the tune immediately. Can you tell me where I could get this informtion. The guitar cost $119.00. He loves it and does not want another guitar. HELP.
