The following is from Smith's company. Lowe's was a local NC store then (now national home improvement).
My research supports the fact that an autograph line of guitars was manufactured in the 1960s under the Merlin name specifically for Lowe's. I am told that the Lowe's stores were quite different then than the ones we know today. Lowe's was a frequent advertiser in The Arthur Smith Show and this line of guitars was promoted on the show and at live performances by Arthur Smith and his cast at new store openings for Lowe's during this era.

Yes when i was about 13 yrs.old my father bought me an electric hollow-body guitar that resembled a Gibson es335...it had a picture on the pick guard "RED BARON"...it was purchased at Lowes'(hardware and lumber business) in Greensboro,NC..and at the time the floor manger said it was a company owned by Arthur Smith. This was 44 years ago..i remember it like it was yesterday...as well as i can remember, it was a very nice guitar and wish i still had it,but traded for a Gibson Melody Maker.
