    Hey guys,
I have a morris w-603 guitar.. I’m a beginner so I was thinking about buying a Fender starter kit (Guitar, extra strings, plectrums, DVD and more) for €134,-
I really have no idea if the Morris is a good guitar or not.. Is this Morris guitar beter or worse than the Fender?
Sorry for my bad English btw

Does anyone out there know anything about this guitar?

I found one in a pawn shop, busted up. I bought it because – 1) I have a hurricane case from before history, and – 2) it’s pretty enough that even if it never played, with a drill and a $5 clockworks, it will make a cool wall clock!

I have found absolutely no information on this guitar. It may be that it is absolute junk (I doubt it, since the problem was the tremelo bridge had come apart, screws and loctite cured it, and it plays awesomely, with a pretty wicked sound and a really sweet neck with low frets), or it may be JUST THAT RARE. Any help will be appreciated.

Additional info, it is H-S-H config (the humbuckers are dual single config tied together), single volume and treble pot, with 3 micro on-off-on switches. Not sure total capacity, as one of the switches is shot, and the treble pot crackles quite a bit (haven’t replaced them yet…) It has a body and head stock shaped just like the ESP LTD Deluxe 1000, although the body stock is flat, not arched.

Any and all information will be appreciated. Best way to contact is via my email [email protected]

Thanks, and cheers to all! Hugh

I bought this guitar on ebay about 5 years ago… ovation back. It has been an amazing guitar but I just bought a Carparelli DOS Hollow Body Jazz Guitar (what a beauty) and I have a Larravie electric accoustic. I want to sell the Tornado but no idea what it goes for… there is no info anywhere on this guitar… I paid $500 7 years ago and I thought I got a great deal once I played it… anyone?

      1. Really... that much?
        gordmer

I paid $700 10 years ago.. the guitar is in what I would call good- very good shape, not new but still… has some minor dings and the metal frets are worn on the 1st to 4th frets… needs a new pick-up but that is about $100.00 at long and mcquade.. being that it is a 35 year old guitar that has been played alot… any idea where I would go about selling this?

    BP

A buddy of mine just gave me this guitar, its in very good condition which is surprising considering where he found it and in what part of the world I’m in right now. Its a 1975 Morris M-18. I put new strings on it and it sounds great, but I would like to know more about it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    1. Re: 1975 Morris M-18 classical acoustic
      BP

Well, I’m no longer where I was. My buddy gave me the guitar while we were on tour in Afghanistan. He found it in KAF buried in some dark dirty dusty corner. It had been there a while, showed signs of drying out, the fret bars were starting to protrude from the neck, not too bad though. A few nicks and cuts, the keys needed help, but the neck was good and the body whole, it was a really nice guitar considering. I couldn’t bring it home in the end, I really wish I had. Still can’t find any info on it though.

Basically the 6à models are made with a solid spruce top, laminated brazilian rosewood bac and sides and maple center piece on the back. The neck is Nato, fingerboard and bridge are rosewood.

  12. Who knows anything about Morris WL-35 ??
    Klaus

Hello everybody. Does anyone have information on a Morris WL-35 acoustic (Western) guitar? The guitar is craftmanship made (made in Japan), the color is black with mother-of-pearl marquetries on the top and on the fingerboard. White Bindings. Very remarkable are two (!)pickguards (left and right of the sound hole). I don’t know anything about the materials, I am not expert. Does anybody know this guitar? When was it manifactured and what was the former price?
    Regards

    1. I know something about Morris WL-35 and WL-30
      Erik Kofod

I got my 35′ around 1980, and it is the best of my acoustics. Morris was so good at copying Martin and Gibson guitars, (sometimes even better – but always cheaper) that Martin filed a lawsuit aginst the factory in the early 80′. Whereafter Morris unloaded a substantial amount of guitars to Europe. Morris’ skill to make these excelent guitars stems both from the founder – Toshio Moridaira’ – previous working relation with Martin and Gibson, and the access to prime matured wood, e.g. brazilian rosewood, which is impossible to get hands on today.
Recently I managed to purchase a WL-30, and have been able to compare the two. The wl-30 and wl-35 are both “replica” / “inspired” of a Gibson Dove model.
I obtained this specification of WL-30 from the Morris company : “Was made in Japan around 1972. Top spruce. Back Side Birch. Neck Nato.
Fingerbord Rosewood. Bridge Rosewood. Sorry – we do not have any details for WL-35”
When comparing WL-30 and WL-35 it seems that the vital specs are identical, and the difference is in the decor of the head-stock and whether the board has (plastic) dot or square mother of pearl inlay. The body, neck, sound and playability is very much the same. I have now seen 4 different version of the headstock layout. Tuners are marked “Morris” but are similar to vintage Schaller. I belive the white binding on the side of the neck is made of plastic, but the colouring of the nut indicates that isn’t. It misses the fine stripes seen in bone, so – potentially – it might be ivory. I will NOT test it by setting fire to it !!! The spruce tops wood-grain is very dense, which indicates slow growth – and high quality, where WL-35 being slightly better than WL-30. The frets quality and filing is perfect on both guitars.

    2. Morris WL-35 Guitar
      Sanford Collins

I purchased my Morris WL-35 in September 1984 in Italy. I paid about $120.00 American dollars for the guitar new. It is my understanding this model was made for sale in Asia and Europe only. It is a very well made guitar with great sound. I love the double pick guards. Mine was black in color also.

Well I got one, too. On the Morris-Website they even don’t list up this guitar, which suprised me. If there is a possibility to do so, I would upload a picture I took from my guitar.
But regarding to Mario, I don’t know its market price, too.

: I bought a MD-515 Morris, and own 2 Martins and have played several. This guitar was made in about 1982 and was a style guitar for music such a Jimmie Rodgers,(the Breakman.) Morris Guitar model MD-515, Made in Japan, did a job on the D-15 martin, also on the DC-15E and a couple of Gibsons. I can tell you this, I play in Branson MO. Mon, Wen, Fri, and Sat., and the only guitar I use for acoustic work is my Morris. You are right in saying this Martin Copy Morris sounds as good if not better than the D-15. Hang on to yours as they no longer make this copy Jewel, and the price for it will soon be whatever the market will bare.

These 70s japanese guitars are worth scouting out for. They go for a song still..The Morris range ar flawless copies of Martrin dreadnoughts and named after their prices ..A Morris W100 [ if u can even find one ] was selling for 100,000 yen in the mid 1970s.. [ a 100,000 yen today is @ 1000USD$ ] so back in the 70s this is like a 5-6k guitar today. Ive found a Morris W40 [ 40,000 yen or 500USD$ in mid 70s} selling today for 300USD$… So ask yourself,.. would u rather pay 7k for a 70s Martin or 300$ for an equivalent guitar made in sitka spruce and brazilian rosewood..???

    1. Re: Morris Model W603 from 1977
      DeHulingue

Hello–my mother has the same model from her high school years, and I’ve recently taken a look at it. It looks like the top is laminate, and hence I would guess the back and sides are as well (since the top is the most critical component as far as materials are concerned.) If you are in doubt you could take a look yourself: you can tell whether the top is laminated by looking at the edge of the hole and watching the wood grain. If it continues vertically through the edge, it’s solid, but if it stops and is interrupted by horizontal lines you’re looking at the layers of a laminate. You can look at photos here: http://www.musicfolk.com/docs/Features/Feature_HowtoBuyaGuitar.htm
Perhaps your question has already been answered, but if not I hope this helps.

      Dave

I just got a Morris W603 and I think it’s a great guitar. It’s clearly a copy of a 1970s Martin D28. The top is solid spruce and the neck is mahogany. The back and sides are laminated (you can tell because the outside looks like rosewood but the inside has a totally different grain, more like mahogany). The fingerboard and headstock veneer are rosewood. It appears to have non-scalloped X bracing (like a 70s D28), with the X about two inches back from the soundhole. It has an adjustable bridge like Gibson used on their guitars in the 1960s. This is a different bridge from a D28 but it works very well. The guitar has a rich, full sound, much like a D28.

Hi, I have a 1978 W602. It is basically the same model. Mine is all laminated including the top and I guess yours as well.
I would advice you to remove the adjustable saddle which prevents the top from vibrating perfectly and to have a custom bone or ivory sadlle made to replace it, then you’ll have a booming sound

Hi! A Morris W611 Deluxe is from 1978 my own guitar, like also a Tornado model of first ’80 age. If for the second one I have had some details, about the first I’m not able to find anything.
The guitar is craftmanship made, body in rosewhood and Jacaranda on the back, rosewood on the band, cedar, I think, on the top, mahogany the neck’s body, ebony the fingerboard.
"She" has mother-of-pearl marquetries on the top, on the fingerboard so like on the upper side of the neck.
I post from Italy. Someone of you know this fantastic guitar? What kind of strings do you use? Have you an idea of the value?

      Hey Rikki!

I also have a Hurricane Rosa and I also know very little about it! Mine is like a pearl white colour, what is your’s? All I know is that it was made in Japan in the early or mid eighties….

Any more information would be hugely appreciated as there seems to be very little information about Morris electric guitars on the web. Even Harmony Central only has one review of the Hurricane Rosa and it reads as though that dude was totally stoned when he wrote it!

If it is the guitar I am thinking of, Jason Becker and Marty Friedman were sponsored by them in the late 80’s. You can see their guitars on the album covers of "Speed Metal Symphony" and "Dragon’s Kiss". As soon as those guys got famous, they were sponsered by bigger name companies.
That is all I know about those guitars. I have been trying to find out info on them myself. I guess Friedman might answer you if you email him. Jason Becker has been stricken with ALS.
        Great metal albums BTW

I’ve got a late 60s early70s wd-25. It is a copy of a Gibson j-45 and it has some of the early j-45 features (50s ie large beefy neck, reverse bridge) and some of the later features(70s i.e pickguard)It has a vintage sunburst finish, large gibson pickguard, older gibson style big neck, and the slope shoulders. These are great, well-made examples of japanese copies built by Toshio Moridaira and you don’t see this particular model in the US. Ive only seen one other.

      Nix

I have a G208 that is stamped 1975. I originally bought it 2 years ago at a pawn shop in North Hollywood for $65.00. I had recently given this guitar to a friend of mine as a house warming present, thinking I would buy a better one for myself. The only modification on my part was swapping out the bridge saddle for a herring bone piece. I then spent 2 months shopping around for another classical/flamenco in the sub-$500 range and settled on the Yamaha CG-171SF because it seemed well made & had many positive reviews. All the guitars I tested in this price range had reasonably good tone & craftmanship. ANYWAYS.. I went to visit that same friend last week to show him my new guit. & picked up the Morris that I had gifted, just for old times sake…(ahem)..the beat-up Morris g208 was shockingly more responsive & the sustain was far better..even with the same old strings I had left on it…Well, my friend was impressed with the new guitar I had bought- mostly because it was new looking. So we swapped! I couldn’t be more satisfied. lol. In fairness, the Yamaha was a flamenco guitar. This would lend to it having less sustain in the lower registers and give it more of a percussive response in the higher registers. Maybe it was overbuilt, but it really felt like an oar compared to the G208- even though the action & neck were comfortable. Also, considering that the G208 is 32 yrs old & showing its battle scars, the intonation is still great. Obviously a well made & resilient guitar.
      kthxbye

I’ve continued to play the Morris and feel the same way. I’ve bought and sold many guitars since this orignial posting (a couple of Martins, a Taylor) and turned around and sold them all except the Morris. I originally paid $25 for and had to change out the tuning gears. I’ve been offered $750 for it since then by a friend who plays and records professionally. Every time we sit down to write, he picks my guitar up first, plays a few rifs and shakes his head, smiles and sets it back down…I swear…the sound gets better every year. It ages like a good good bottle of wine.

    Hi, dear All!
I have an acoustic Morris guitar (model W604M) with bronze strings, made in Japan in 1977. I own it for 18 years, I very like the sound of it and I cared it very much. But unfortunately it slipped out from the shoulder-strap and fell down. The edge of the back side was bruised, and it seems that on about a six inches long part the back plate was parted from the side. I see another hairline cleft on the middle of the edge. I would like to know, that whether this effects the sound of the guitar? If yes, can the guitar be repared? The sound of the guitar will be the same as originaly? I am in despair.
    Thank you in advance,

I thought all was lost with my guitar. But I took it to the right person, and to my great relief, I got it back, and it was still the best guitar I had ever played.

        Hi,

I have a W-602 made in Japan in 1978; it was my first guitar and remains my preferred one, even if I have much higher value gears now… It is sentimental, but also because it plays great. The only backdraw is an adjustable saddle on a metalic chassis which is preventing the top of giving all it has; I’m currently replacing it with a custom made fossil ivory saddle from B.Colosi.
This was a cheap guitar, laminated spruce top (but very veloce) and mahogany back and side. Rosewood fingerboard and bridge, chrome tuners; these tuners can still be ordered for replacement from Morris in Japan.
I don’t know the specs of your model, but I suspect it is a close one.
        Hope this helped.
        Jeff

Have had this guitar for about 25 years. Great to play, great sound. Anybody know any more about this model? Is it Japanese made?

      1. I pickup a Morris W602 used from a shop in Toronto back in 2007. (Paid $120). It was in reasonable shape (a few dents and belt buckle marks on the back).
What I liked was the size, it’s slightly smaller than a full size dreadnought and I thought the sound was nice, full voice.
I cleaned the fret board, adjusted the neck as best as possible (it had to be tightened by almost 3 full turns and then new light gauge strings. I love it.

Since then I’ve treated myself to a very nice Taylor 410, and while I LOVE my Taylor, I still play the Morris often. It just feels and sounds so nice.

I drop into used shops and keep my eye open for another late 70’s model. I’ve seen web pictures of Morris’s with double pick guards, love to find one.

If do see a Morris, look for the Chuck Wagon logo and maybe you’ll be luck and find a gem like I did.

my wife was vacationing in Spain with her mom and sister and picked up a Morris tornado 6string acoustic electric guitar as a present for me back in the states. It has a label inside that states it was produced under license by Kaman Music Corp. It looks very much like their Ovation model. The label also says its a model AZJ and was made in Japan by Morris Musical Instruments. My wife purchased it for somewhere between 350-400$ to the best of her recollection in the late 1980 s. I think it’s a very nice guitar . It looks great ,is easy to play and sounds great in either electric or acoustic mode. I also have always been impressed with the craftsmanship with which it was made. The neck is perfectly straight, the finish is excellent and every thing about it makes it appear to be a much more expensive guitar. I write and record my own music and have used in on several albums and it sounds great on recordings. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar story . In closing , if anyone knows monetary value of this model would be interested to hear from you or if you own one and would like to share your thoughts on the subject. Thanks for reading this A.

This has allways been an outstanding guitar ,keeps its tune for years at a time when it was in the back of my closet in the original case and slightly forgotten, its completly black ,found it a a pawnshop in Freson Cal on my 18th birthday and have owned it ever since, thanks,Jim.

    1. Re: Morris Les Paul
      robyceruti

I have a Les Paul Custom wine red with three pickups and goldplated hardware by Morris. My guitar was made in Japan at thr beginning of the 70’s. Morris was the high brand of Hondo Guitars. A mint Morris can cost at least 700 euros. Usually it’s all maple made with an ebony fingerboard and abalone inserts. Pickups are a very good copy of the original Gibson Paf. The circuitation is better than the original, as to switch off the middle p.u. (it was impossible on the original les paul) they chose to provide three volumes and one tone knobs. As you can imagine, the overall tone is well controlled by the single pot and each pickup’s volume can be controlled separately. The sound is great. Really vintage with the typical features of the 59s and 60s les paul. They were very deep and screamy, easy to feedback at medium level of amp. Same as my Morris. In my opinion, it sounds much and much better than any current Gibson made after 1962 and better than many custom shops.

I have on too and it’s truly great. I don’t know much about Morris, but from what I’ve heard they were sued by Gibson in the 70s for makin guitars that were to close to the original. Don’t ever sell it. It’s not worth very much but it is as good as a vintage Gibson i reckon.

: I have a great Morris les Paul- model. It plays great, it’s more than fifteen years old. And I can’t find any information about this model.
: I got new humbucker (schaller) pick-ups and gear on it and in it. My dealer says it’s worth is 400 euro.
: If someone has any info about this model than please let me know.

So it seems there are more people playing on a Morris Les-Paul. Yes indeed it’s a great instrument but as everyone else I’ve never heard from it before. I Nought it for a price you would dream over. Seeing what the dealer would pa for I keep it to myself and hope to play it for a very long time. What I like most about it it’s the way it manufactured. Very detailed. and even the sound is great.

I Have also a black Morris Les Paul- I served it just a few days ago and it truly is as close to Gibson as possible. (I had Gibson Les Paul Custom 70´s Model 10 years ago and what it comes to my opinion Morrris is better to play at least to say). I am selling the guitar since i have some bills to pay… make me an offer if u are interested of the guitar… I live in Helsinki Finland and my number is +358469686104.
