Re: Yamaha SJ550HR
I had mine apprased last year in nevada. they told me that there one of the last guitars made in japan. there all made in china now. they said mine which is in exelent cond. is worth about $250.00 US. : : : : I have this guitar. The color is a deep brown with twin humbuckers. Can you tell me the date it was maufactured and approximate value. It is in excellent condition.
: : : I have one also. Information on this guitar is almost non exisrant. Yamaha is no help at all. I have been told they were only made for a couple of years in the mid 80s. If you can get their history, please let me know.
: I bought an SJ550HR in the mid eighties and still have it now. It is superb to play and I prefer this to my Fender Strat. I paid over £250 when i had the guitar and the retail price should have in Excess of £300. Dont know if it is worth anything now as you never seem to see any about. Not even on Ebay!!!
: I wouldnt part with mine for the world and would recommend the guitar to anyone who may be lucky enough to get a chance of buying one

Re: Yamaha SJ550HR I have one :)
I had been playing guitar for about a year on a cheap Sears type acoustic guitar with very high action and decided to buy an electric because I wanted to rock. So there was an ad in the local paper here in Canada for a guitar and amp for $500. The amp was a fender J.A.M. Just a 1x12" solid state but with two inputs and chorus. The guitar was this sunburst, but a tad darker, brown guitar and so beautiful. This guy had bought it new for his son and his son had played it once and didn't like guitar so I basically got it for brand new. The p-90 type pickups are so amazing. It just has this sweet spot and tone that none of my other guitars can get. It has an amazing Les Paul sound and one of my bands is almost like a zeppelin tribute band and it exactly gets the tone.
I've had to replace the push/pull knob (coil tap) and the B and G strings sometimes don't hold their tune but man it rocks. I had it stolen once but luckily got it back. I had taken down our videos on Youtube of us doing Zep but will repost them so guys can see it in action. I have a '96 50th anniversary strat that is awesome and a js1200 satch guitar and they both rock a ton. But there is something about this guitar that just has mojo. It makes a killer blues guitar!!!
If you can find one buy it. This kicks ass on most Les Pauls I've played. Nice to see some fellow players of this guitar. Hard to find any information about it and because I bought my 2nd hand I've never really known much about it other than it just rocks. I make my living from playing guitar and this is one of my main guitars. It looks incredible and it sounds incredible.
Cheers from the Yukon.

I bought mine new in 1984 for $350.00. Red Chrome. It has aged so sweetly, I would never consider letting it go.
In 1990 I bought a Strat thinking it would become my primary axe and the Yamaha would become the back-up. The Strat has been gone for about 15 years now.
I bought a Les Paul Std about a year and a half ago, again thinking it would become my primary. Its a sweet guitar, but, my Yamaha still get the strings played off it. When I break a string I play the Paul until I get around to putting strings on the Yamaha. The Paul is on its second set of strings in 1 1/2 years, while the SJ has had at least 5 sets.
Anybody that has one and wants to sell it. I will buy it right now. I'd love to have another one, but, you can't find them anywhere. I've been looking. Thats how I found this.
