  1. 1966 Vox Phantom XII wiring diagram
    Bob Jardin

Hello,I’m in the process of a major overhaul on a Vox Phantom XII,(66′),and I can’t find a wiring diagram anywhere for it.So many vol. and tone knobs.the main problem is,I couldn’t find any 3 pos pick-up toggles that match the post configuration of the original ones..Just a wiring diagram would really help me..if you can…Thanks

  2. Vox Bulldog Electric Guitar: Need Wiring Diagram
    Justin

I have a mid 1960s Vox Bulldog 6 string electric guitar that had wiring repaired previously in its lifetime and seems to be on the fritz.

I have replaced the tone and volume pots, output jack and am looking for a diagram for wiring the 3-way switch.

The instrument has a Switchcraft 3-way (however it is not the standard “Gibson Style” 3 way). This switch has additional soldering lugs and springy steel contacts. It is a “Right Angle” configuration similar to those used in Gibson SG guitars (lower profile, etc.)

Does anyone have info on where to obtain the original style Switchcraft 3-way switch?
Or…. Does anyone have info on wiring a “Gibson Style” 3-way as a retro fit in this instrument?

Keep in mind this is a 3 single coil pickup equipped guitar with 2 tone controls and one master volume.

The hurdle is in keeping originality with the pickguard and not drilling any holes, etc.
The pickup configuration is that of a Strat, BUT… cannot use a blade style switch.

Once again, 3 single coils with a Switchcraft 3 way switch.

    Please advise. Thanks!

        Zenwalker Guitar

        Hi Robert,
I am hoping you might have a photo of where the pickup hots connect to the switch and/or the pots.
I am trying to connect original pickups to a NOS wiring harness I obtained from eBay, but have no idea where each of the leads go for correct function.

Please send/post a photo (if possible) of which pickup connects to which lug on the 3 way switch. That’s the biggest mystery for me.

        I appreciate it!
        Thanks in advance!

    Samuel Thrower III

I have a 2 ten Caimbridge, 30 watt amp. The volume of this amp won’t keep up with my Vox Pathfinder 15 watts. I replaced the preamp tube, but it didn’t help. Is this normal for this amp, or does something else need to be replaced?
    Thanks,

: Has anyone ever repaired the effects modules contained in 60s Vox guitars? Do you know anyone that has?
: I have two Starstream guitars, and a Grand Prix. They have the following onboard Vox effects:
      : percussion repeat
      : e tuner
      : distortion
      : treble-bass boost
      : palm operated wah
: The effects are not functioning 100% as they should be. There are no schematics for the modules themselves in the owner manuals. The modules are built like sandwiches, so it’s difficult to tell if they correspond to regular Vox effect pedal schematics. Does anyone know anything about these modules/guitar effects?
: Please contact me via my email address, or via The Routes Garage Punk Japan homepage, with ‘Starstream effects’ as the subject!!

I had mine repaired. I had the capacitors replaced and the circuit boards re-soldered, and one pot replaced. Works great. Now if I can only find a pick guard for it.

      : Thanks very much

Anyone who has a Tempest XII probably needs a pick guard. I have a 1966 which was in the case for much of the past forty years. The plastic apparently dried out and "shrunk," causing the two corners to pop off at the screws near the neck. Some guitar repair technicians are good at fabricating pick guards, but most are either woodcrafters or electronics geeks. Please advise how your search has gone. Maybe I’ll replace mine, too. RED

: is there such a thing as a Japanese vox guitar? This is how the seller referred to the guitar I bought. is it simply a fake? it has a sort of small sheet metal vox badge on the head.

Vox guitars were made in Japan several times. in the early 70’s there was a line that looked like Gibsons which were imported to the British market. In the early 80’s there was a line of Japanese Vox guitars called the standard 24 and 25 and the custom 24 & 25. After that there was another line called the Vox White Shadow. I do not believe any of these ever had a metal nameplate. I would guess the guitar is not a Vox or the name plate has been replaced

      John

There are two different Vox Shadows (the Shadow made between 1060 and 1965 and the White Shadow made in the early to mid 80’s). The Shadow is a double cutaway solid body with six-on-a-side tuner headstock, with 3 single coil pickups, the hardware is chrome, it has a white pickguard, tremelo bar with a retangular cover over the bridge with the VOX logo on it. It also has one volume and two tone controls and a pick-up selector knob on the lower cutaway bout. This is based on information from the 7th Ed. of the Bluebook of electric Guitars….Hope it helps…John

      Rory Cubel in Indiana

Does anyone know for sure where these originated. I have been told Vox (the England years) made this flat bodied plank guitar in the skiffle days of early 60’s/late 50’s. Mine is painted white(by hand) with a large black pick guard that curves to envelope the two chrome "toaster" pickups ,bottom of neck, and three control knobs. The strings have a moveable maple bridge(not secured) and a small chrome hardtail heel. The neck has a zero fret at top and 19 more playing frets. There are dot inlays at the 3rd,5th,seventh,ninth,12th,and 17th frets. The headstock is of natural finish light maple with a top edge cut at a sloping angle like Hofner. It has brass tuning pegs, gears and gear plates and the keys are white plastic. The beautiful short neck is true ,natural maple.Along one of the tuning gear plates is the numbers: 35515 which are etched into the wood. Four bolts without any plate hold the neck base to the plain body and a green decal above the pegs at top face of headstock reads: Shadow. The fret board is rosewoodand is laid on neck without bindings. It has six strings and sounds like a short scale Baritone guitar. It also only has one strap peg at bottom since they used to put the other end of strap on a tuning key. No other holes are seen for any former peg at other end of body(where normally found). Please send any info on this small, early, simple but awesome sounding electric skiffle guitar from England(Vox?).Thanks!!!!!

My first electric was one of these (1962, I was 14) . My mother bought it by mail order, probably from the Bell’s catalogue. I remember coming home from school every day for what seemed like weeks hoping it had arrived! It was very crudely made with a plywood body (mine was in a red finish). The neck was wide and flat (think that was ply too!) and the action appalling! I remember the original strings were copper wound and left you with green fingertips! I remember the price was around 14 pounds, quite a lot at the time! Even at that age I wasn’t impressed for long and soon traded it in for a Hofner Clubman. Wish I still had it now though!

I have a Vox Shadow that’s sunburst, white pick guard that surrounds 3 solid chrome face pickups and the middle pick up has "VOX" engraved in it. 3 seperate volume controls and a master volume control. Tuning keys are all chrome, and the green decal on the face of the headstock reads Shadow, JMI Dartford, Kent. Neck is attached withthe help of a chrome plate, on the back side of the ‘plank’ body is an access plate for the jack that states made in England. Guitar also has the original roller/tremelo tail piece with palm lever. The numbers of 64728 are stamped on the back side of the headstock just below the tuning keys. Finish is beginning to crack a bit but it’s all original, right down to the volume pots that have to be cleaned from time to time. It must be a rather unknown line that Vox had as I can’t find out much on it either. Had this guitar for many years. Was handed to me in pieces in an old ‘cardboard’ case, (that has since gone away) put it back together and added it to my "music room".

North Coast Music used to sell parts but the eko factory in Italy where the original guitars were made closed down and this company says that ‘new old stock’ parts are no longer available in the world so our guitars a a rarity..

          Tony Wilkes

Hi, my brother bought one of those new in around 1958. We had an Antora guitar (Japanese make I think) on order but apparently there was a fire at the factory and production was halted. An Antora was being used at the time by the UK Shadows guitarist Hank Marvin. It was also a plank type instrument.
Your guitar was at that time known as a Tuxedo and was actually purchased from the Jennings (JMI) store in Charing Cross Road, London.
I am unsure where the Tuxedo was made but we thought at the time it was an imported item. My brother is occasionally in contact with the salesman who sold us the guitar in 1958.
He may be able to make further enquiries from him.
One of the odd features of the Tuxedo was its ability to provide a good tremolo effect by bending the neck back and forth whilst playing. I wouldn’t recommend it though on your speciman considering it’s age and rarity.
It was from that same store in 1960 that I bought the very first Stratocaster sold in London. There was only one other in the UK then and that was the Fiesta red owned by Hank Marvin.
          Best regards,

: I have a Vox Shadow that’s sunburst, white pick guard that surrounds 3 solid chrome face pickups and the middle pick up has "VOX" engraved in it. Was handed to me in pieces in an old ‘cardboard’ case, (that has since gone away) put it back together and added it to my "music room".

            hI,

I have a Vox white shadow guitar for over 10 years now.
bought at a tiny store in holland, back then they said to me the guiter was already 20 years old. he was looking a new, and bought it for 1000,- dutch guildens. thats maybe…445,- euro now. thats nothing compared to the prices they ask for a vox guitar they make TODAY! thay are building guitars again and ask pricies beginning by: 2000,- euro’s. I wanna know when my guitar was bild, he has a chrome plate at the back with made by japan on it too.

            greetz, liza from holland.

: Hi, my brother bought one of those new in around 1958. We had an Antora guitar (Japanese make I think) on order but apparently there was a fire at the factory and production was halted. An Antora was being used at the time by the UK Shadows guitarist Hank Marvin. It was also a plank type instrument.
: Your guitar was at that time known as a Tuxedo and was actually purchased from the Jennings (JMI) store in Charing Cross Road, London.
: I am unsure where the Tuxedo was made but we thought at the time it was an imported item. My brother is occasionally in contact with the salesman who sold us the guitar in 1958.
: He may be able to make further enquiries from him.
: One of the odd features of the Tuxedo was its ability to provide a good tremolo effect by bending the neck back and forth whilst playing. I wouldn’t recommend it though on your speciman considering it’s age and rarity.
: It was from that same store in 1960 that I bought the very first Stratocaster sold in London. There was only one other in the UK then and that was the Fiesta red owned by Hank Marvin.
            : Best regards,
            : Anthony Wilkes.

:::I just bought one of these guitars at an auction. In Oregon U.S.A. It is a plank, with sunburst finish, 3 chrome toaster style pickups with one cover missing. The varnish has cracks in it like every other old Vox I have seen that date to the sixties or earlier. It has a white pick guard with 3 chrome knurled knobs and an old style switch that turns (not a flip switch) but is missing the knob that I assume is chrome like the 3 volume knobs. I haven’t put strings on the guitar yet so I don’t know if they are all volume or 1 volume and 2 tone. The roller/tremolo has VOX stamped in big letters and under that it says PAT.APP.FOR in smaller capitol letters. It has a plastic cover plate on the back that is stamped, Made In England. The neck is 19 fret with a fret just under the nut that has no use, as the string would never touch it and the neck is attached with a metal plate. Tuners are a single strap with gears steel not brass with plastic knobs. Just under the tuners on the back the headstock are the numbers 64523. A green VOX decal along with Shadow JMI Dartford Kent on the front. I was suprised to find this guitar, as I had never seen or heard of it before. I can’t wait to play it and see how it stacks up to all the other VOX guitars I have and have played. Wish I could find out more about it but this is as close as I have come, so far.

I don’t have it now (January,2005). I sold it on eBay this last Spring on Ebay to a collector that works at Warner Bros. studio. He bought it for $460.00 !! There were a few bidders, so I would hang on to that 1950 skiffle guitar if I were you. They are very RARE! Peace! Rory

I’ve had one for years but have never seen another.
Mine’s pretty bashed up, worn frets, warped neck.
Haven’t found a pic on the web ever, either.

      1. I own a natural wood version
        Anonymous

I own a natural wood version of the vox white shadow.
It never had. Pick guard unlike coloured versions of this guitar.
On its neck plate it has stamped MQ…….nothing else.
It has low action, two hum buckeyes and three controls plus other switches in
the positions described in colour models.
It still plays like a dream…. A great rock or blues guitar.
Made in the 80s as a cheaper guitar in Japan, it is every bit as good as the JV squiers by Fender
and ought to be recognised as the Classic it is!
It looks great in natural wood finish.

    Hello Doc!
I recently purchased this guitar, and was wondering if you had any insight of it? i.e.-the pick up selector switch has a reverse, mono,& off setting.Question is:I would like to know if their are certain settings that only work, because I’m just not hearing that much of a difference in sound with this thing? I am running through two amps with the "VOX" original stereo chord,it has 12 volume & 12 tone knobs.
Just wondering if the guitar is more show than go?
    Thanks for any help,
I love VOX istruments and amps (practicly swear by them)
