In response to your Takamine question, I have a 1979 EF455S. I am not sure of the difference between an EF and an F455S. Takamine & Co. on the headstock with abaloney ivy inlay on the fretboard. I contacted Takamine after finding this one about two years ago. They responded by telling me I found the Holy Grail of Takamine guitars. Only Twenty Four were shipped to the USA in 1979. Rosewood back and fretboard, Sitka Spruce top. These were built prior to the Martin & Co. law suite over the similarities in Takamine’s logo. In 1979 the suggested retail price was $1,350.00 US dollars. I have no idea of current value.

        Good luck and good playing

I have a Takamine & Co. Acoustic F-307 made in 1980. The serial number inside is an 8 or possibly a 6 or S, then 1010240. On the head under the name is the picture of a rat with a patch over its eye. What might be the value of this guitar.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time looking for inf on may 1962 takamine f-365 s. I bought it in 1972. I’ve used it mostly in church, it’s beautiful, and I love the way it sounds. I would like to know anything you can tell me about it : price, history…

          Dana

I also have an F455 and I also bought from the same guy an F456 twelve string, so I have both models with the Vine or Tree of life. But if you look at Stuart Mossman on Wikipedia you will see he made some guitars called the golden era. The Taka. 455 and 456 are exact replicas of it. I also wrote Takamine about the production of these guitars. They tell me they didn’t really keep track, and so how a production number of 24 is to me suspicious. They are very rare and I like mine a lot, in fact when I found another 455 I bought it, and coincidentally it was made on the same day my other 455 was. If you check out Guitar Museum under Takamine f452 you will find one post where an individual who collects guitars sold a basically unplayed one last year for $5000. Can’t verify this but it is on the sight.

I’m trying to find some parts to re-build my mother’s old Harmony Montclair guitar. It was the guitar she used while she was in a band in the 60’s and we are re-finishing it for her as a Christmas present. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Please tell me more about Montclair guitars. When were they made, by whom? I have an acoustic Montclair guitar that’s practically in mint condition. I bought it at an estate sale several years ago. It plays wonderfully with a deep, booming voice that needs no amplification to fill a room. Please give me an idea on its value and age. Thanks – Arnold

Hi, I’m collecting any infos on the history of guitar making in the Eastern townships (Quebec)
You have a Lys Guitar ?
You have a Norman with no label but a burn in back strip ?

    Thanks

      Jeff

I own an L-18 12-string I bought for less than 200 bucks back in the early 80’s. Fantastic guitar. It was damaged and repaired before I bought it and the repair is cosmetically awful, but the sound is outstanding.

I think the Lys guitars were made in Ottawa (or the other side of the river in Gatineau) until the factory burned in the early 80’s. The current factory in LaPatrie makes Seagull, Art & Lutherie, Norman, Simon and Patrick, LaPatrie and Godin electrics.

Robert Godin’s guitars are excellent, fine workmanship and the equivalent of many much higher-priced brands.

Drop me a line if you need more info.

    2. Re: Lys Guitar
      Bob Giles

I am very happy to find some info on the Lys guitar. I stumbled on one in a pawn shop in San Francisco about 1991. I always felt sorry for the guy who pawned it. I have played it almost every day since I brought it home. It got a little wet one Christmas when a frozen pipe flooded the house, but it still looks and sounds great. I don’t know when I’ll have enough money to buy another axe that I would enjoy more. It is an L-18 CW with out a pickup. Serial number 9593. I would appreciate any details anyone may have on this model.

    3. Re: Lys Guitar
      Bob Giles

: : Hi, I have a LYS model-15 I bought sometime around 1978-80. I love it. It has a rich sound and has held up as good as most other expensive Guitars. It’s play action is even better than a lot of other expensive guitars I tried at the time of purchase. I believe I paid around $500 to $600 for it. I would not sell it now for any price and still enjoy playing it. I was told it had elephant ivory around the body edges but never checked that as being true. I am looking into having the tuning keys re-gold plated due to wear. Either way I love it.

    4. Re: Lys Guitar
      Christian

I’ve bought a Lys guitar in Montreal during the mid 80’s. Model L50 : serial number 15314. The sound is full and rich, all in all very good. Didn’t change it, cause I didn’t find this kind of sound on other guitars I’ve tried, and some were pretty costly. My luthier told me, these guitars were built in Robert Godin Montreal guitar shop. It was Robert Godin first Guitar cie. Now, we all know that Robert Godin owns LASIDO cie in LaPatrie, Qc, Canada. Brand names are Godin, Seagull, Norman, Art&Lutherie, LaPatrie and Simon&Patrick guitars.

I have two LYS Guitars, L15 -1980 and L20- 1980. I had the L20 for about 14 years and love the sound. Saw an ad in the paper regarding LYS, went to see it, brought my L20 with me, thought they were sisters, bought it. They sound similar but distictively different. When I get a chance, I will send pics.

For the value it will vary according to its condition, but the range is around 200-350$. Send me some pics, I will be able to get more precise on the estimate…I collect Lys guitars and have now about 30 of them…

            Randy

Lys guitars were made in LaPatrie Quebec. They are often described as the first guitars made by Robert Godin who developped the Seagull Guitar. This is incorrect. The Lys was made by Canadian Luthier Norman Butcher who also made the Kamouraska classical guitar. In the last part of 1980 a fire just about destroyed the Shop Butcher was operating and he did not have the financial ability to rebuild so he sold out to Godin, who remamed the Lys “seagull” and the Kamouraska the “La Patrie” Godin then developed the Simon and Patrick the Art & Luthier and the Norman.

          1. I have a Kay 588 accoustic
            Another musician

I have a Kay 588 accoustic guitar I bought brand new some time in the late 70s/early 80’s. There are spots on the fingerboard where the stain has worn off and there is a small crack starting in the bridge where the pegs hold the strings in, but the guitar still sounds and plays great to this day. The only maintenance I have done is adjusting the bridge and sanding the frets once about 30 years ago. This guitar was by no means a high quality guitar compared to others available at the time, but it has definitely stood the test of time.

    Rory Cubel

Does anyone have a slightly used violin shaped bass guitar for sale? I’m looking for one of these (cheap) – Rogue, Univox, Greco, Ibanez,or Galveston or a Conrad from the 70’s. Thanks- Peace.

    1. Re: Need affordable violin shaped Bass Guitar
      Kris Krumal

This message is actually for Rory, but if anyone else knows how I might be able to find any replacement parts for a Conrad "fiddle" bass guitar, that would be great. I have one that sounds like it is an identical model to Rory’s with the Sunburst body, Rosewood neck, violin shape, etc. It was given to me by a man I knew at a church back around 1992 or 1993 or so. After leaving it in California for about 5 years, I had it shipped back to me with some definite wear and tear. One of the tuning knobs was broken off of the neck and it had some nicks and scratches on the body and neck. It is missing one of the pick-ups as well as the tension/tremolo bar that rested on the bridge assembly originally. Anyone have any ideas how I can get a hold of any parts for this one?

      Thanks! Much appreciated…

Can anyone tell me the value of this guitar. Its a black cut-away model, and sounds brilliant acoustically, but not as good when plugged into a sound system. Might have to change the pick-up??

I have one I got garage sale that had a broken headstock from being dropped. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t built well, my daughter once dropped my Gibson and it broke in the same place. From what I know the factory was destroyed in 1980 and then they became Lapatrie. Lapatrie Quebec is the home of Godin, Seagull, Art luthier…. They make some decent stuff. I have bought an sold a few hundred guitars in my life. It’s a hobbie. I fix them, play them for a whilke and resell them. This guitar has a solid cedar top, Laminated back and sides. Looks like maple, if it’s not then I don’t know what it is. The fretboard and bridge I like. Nice looking rosewood. It says handmade and it is. It’s not a crudely made guitar but you can tell it wasn’t mass produced. No finish which I don’t really like. It sounds great and I don’t own a a classical so I am keeping it. They’re not worth alot of money but it’s a well built guitar IMO.

My father passed away about 2 years ago…he was great at the guitar, and I just started learning how to play about 2 days ago…lol. He had a Kamouraska Etude guitar, and a Fender. They are mine now, and I am curious out the Kamouraska. It says that it was made in 1980 I believe. I searched it on yahoo, and this is the only match. The neck is broken, but how much would is it worth nowadays? It is made of wood, looks very plain, and I think you pretty much described it. Thanks in advance.

        Hi,
I have a Kamourask guitar. I’m presently selling mine because I’m a poor artist. It will break my heart but that’s the breaks. It was hand made in Quebec, Canada. Mine is approx. 2 yrs old, in a beautiful no lacquered plain matt finish. It has a gorgeous sound with steel and nylon strings. I hope this is a help to you.

Your guitar was made by the Butcher Brothers in Lapatrie Qubec. It was the predessor of the Godin line of Lapatrie guitars…..just a much finer version. The Butcher’s guitar factory burned down in 81 and they did not have the financing to rebuild so entered Robert Godin who purchased the remains of the company and then started Godin Guitars Seagull Norman Simon Patrick and Lapatrie. It is fortunate that he took over rather then allowing Martin to take over. Martin has a history of destroying quality guitar lines that they do not want to compete with as they did when they acquired Goya guitars from Levine and moved them from their manufacturing base in sweden to korea just about destroying a small community in Sweden. If you can ever get your hands on an early swedish made goya you have a guitar as fine as anything Martin makes. Just as a seagull gives Martin a run for it’s money.

At any rate your kamouraska is a fine and very historic guitar.

I purchased a Kamouraska Etude guitar (#11015) also plain solid wood in 1981 for about $150 Canadian in Waterloo, Ontario. My guitar teacher at the time encouraged me to buy it. It was made in Quebec I think. Don’t know much else. sorry.

Found it interesting learning a bit more about the Kamouraska guitar as I have one too. I rec’d it as a gift when I lived in Canada 20+ yrs ago and have not used it much. Would like to sell it but have no idea what it is worth. I did have to have the face replaced as it was damaged in shipping as a brand new guitar! But it looks perfect. How can I find out the value of this guitar? It is an Etude Major. Any suggestions appreciated. 🙂

The Kamouraska guitar was made originally by Unisonic founded by Robert Godin & Claude Boucher son of
Normand Boucher who is the founder of Norman guitars
Kamouraska is most likely a design of Claude. It is the ancestor of the La Patrie line.
After Unisonic went down, it restarted as Lasido/Guitabec owned by Robert Godin
the name was changed afterwards to La Patrie
Quite good beginner/intermediate guitar or good beater to bring outside
Nice bolt on neck with truss rod.

This is probably a nice beginners guitar. Kamouraska guitars are similar to the La Patrie line made by Lasido in La Patrie, Quebec. The Etude in the La Patrie line is a basic model with a matte finish with a solid cedar top and mahagony back and sides. All of these guitars have a repeated butterfly pattern around the soundhole. Does this sound like what you have?

          Joachim Lüdtke

          Dear all,

I have since my last post got the instrument, begun to clean it (c. 40 years exposure to everything flying around in the living room have left quite a film, especially on the soundboard), decided to change the plastic saddle in the bridge against a bone one a.s.o.
It is a quite big guitar, with a string length of 660 mm and a rather large body, and should sound quite pleasant when newly strung.
The tuners seemed a bit stiff. When I had removed them I could see that the ends of the plastic rolls holding the strings seemed to have widened in diameter – just the ends which go into the wood of the headstock, center section.

Well, I still would very much like to see material from Kamouraska,

          My email is [email protected]

        Baz

These guitars are worth keeping. Forget the dollar value. I bought one long ago and will always keep this. I have had many collectible guitars. It is not a super finely crafted guitar or especially beautiful but it has a very beautiful sound. So I would counsel that you all just close your eyes, play it well and listen. Value: priceless.

I just had to relate my own tragic story. I had a Kamouraska “Etude” guitar. Actually, I still have pieces of it. This is one of the best guitars I’ve played or heard, considering the price. It’s a wonderful guitar. The fact that it doesn’t have a finish gives it a really warm, bright sound. It’s really easy to play. Unfortunately, a friend of mine left it on his living room couch and another friend of ours, who was drunk, came by and sat on the thing and just busted it all up. It was really sad. I later went out and bought a La Patrie guitar, which supposedly replaced the Kamouraska line, but it just didn’t match up. La Patrie is good, but strangely, it doesn’t match the Kamouraska. If you have one of these Kamouraskas, hold onto it and give it a play, because I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

I’ve owned many guitars the last 20+ years and I often come back to this one.
It sounds terrific. Like it glows.
No reason to make beginner sound bad, sometimes a well-crafted instrument transcends its initial purpose/limitations.

I just purchased a Fender acoustic F-265C with the sharp cut away. I checked the Fender web site and they show the guitars made in Asia in 1987-88. I believe these guitars to be made in Korea rather than Japan or China, however I could be wrong. This is just what I have found in my research. Hope this helps.

Palmer is a U.S.A. company based in Miami, FL. They contract out the building of cheap guitars to China and such; while reserving the high end, high priced guitars for those made in the states (like most guitar makers today). I had one that had a broken head stock. I paid $50 for it, just as a camp guitar. It sounded fair, but I could tell it was made cheap. I’d compare them to a cheap Cort, Mitchell, or Fender.

Palmer is a Miami, FL based guitar maker. They have high end models made in the states and cheap models contracted out to the highest bidder like most guitar maker today. I would say that if you tried to sell one of these, you would most likely not get what you paid for it new because they are simply made cheaply in huge numbers. They eventually turn up at used music shops and garage sales around the country. I wouldn’t pay more than $50 for one myself and did just that. They make good campfire guitars.

Palmer guitars are made in Korea.and MModel numbers fall in line with Martin guitars a Palmer P35 P standing for Palmer would be modeled after a Martin D35 and so on. I have one and
it plays nice and sounds OK neck is perfectly straight and stays in tune ALWAYS I havn’t hade to tune it for over a year.
It is all Mahog.and is constructed very well.Intonation is off just a hair on the 6th string plays as easy as a Martin
but the sound isn’t as rich not much chime.IT is what it is a nice cheep acou. guitar. Beats Fender acoustics. mine cost 35.00 dollars with a case on Ebay.I play it all the time cause it is always in tune.

I bought a Palmer acoustic-electric about 10 years ago, for 185.00, used, it’s white, with black trim, and still plays very well. I also can’t find out where it’s made, the neck is still straight, and the tone is good. It says hand crafted inside, and model p-38-12 and a letter I don’t recognise, or is a misprint. the pick-ups are near the last frets, small screws, almost hidden. The neck is kinda wide, but you get used to it. Thats all for now, I’ll bet all their guitars are pretty good.

Got myself a Palmer today 050627, it´s a doubleneck 12/6 and seems to be of rather good quality. Needs some neck adjustment but so did my brand new Gibson LP to :-). Mine was imported from Germany to Sweden from a firm called JJ Music (JoJo) but i also have trouble finding out were they are built, what kind of wood and so on is used. Would be nice if someone knew something about these guitars or were to find something about them on the net. I really don’t want to disassemble the guitar to check what kind of mics and stuff are used.
Have a nice summer. Greetings from SWEDEN

Hey dan, others: My first guitar was a Palmer, my parents purchased it for me from our small town’s jewelry store. That was like 1968. The guitar was an electric with two pick-ups and "wabble-stick" (tremelo). It was a beautiful natural wood tone sunburst. Jewelry stores have not been known to carry the best in guitars; but I had a lot of fun learning to play that thing. I still have it; can’t bring myself to part with it, though I now have three acoustics (Yamaha, Alvarez (12 string), and a Fender (DGS21, a Peavey bass and Lyon series Washburn. I’d say, for your money, your better off with a washbun. The neck action on them is very impressive. My Palmer is now in disrepair. I need to resolder the pick-ups. The key-board was quite nice; some bridge problems, however, a bit of a rattle. Maybe the nut needs to be reset. I don’t know where to find them now, but I understand that they’re still out there somewhere.

Palmer is made in Indonesia. There are a few acoustic models. The guitar is made for mainly beginners, late teens and adults. Go to http://www.tropicalmusic.com Prices are up to about $300.00 including a case. I bought one too. Nobody I have asked knows anything about them either.

      1. Re: Who know's about Palmer guitars

I think there must be several guitars of various types made by different manufacturers called Palmer. I personally own a Palmer Espana Michelle, which is hand made classical produced in Spain and imported via a distributor in Miami. It was in Accoustic Guitar magazines top recommended mid-priced classicals about eight years ago. Not too sure what you picked up that was made in Indonesia. 🙂

They are sold here in Puerto Rico also. They are relatively inexpensive (about $150-300) but have such a sweet sound. I purchased mine for $90 because haggled with salesman. They come with mediocre strings but if you put a decent set on, they play really well. There is another brand sold here that also has a sweet sound, and are so inexpensive. They are known as Don Pablo. Mostly classical guitars, but have many inexpensive student guitars. I love my Palmer. Best deal I’ve ever made.

Palmer is a Miami, FL based company that makes guitars in the states, and contracts the making of cheaper models abroad. The 3 main players in the guitar world today are Korea, Indonesia, and China, with a huge emphasis on China. Your guitar was probably made in China as I believe that PRC stands for People’s Republic of China.

: : I recently purchased a folk guitar made by Palmer. My in-laws brought it from Argentina. I spent over $100.00 for it. I too was trying to find more information about Palmer. With the current economic situation there, I hope I didn’t get ripped off!! Hope this helps a little.

      4. Palmer, Magnum Series PGA-65 Guitar Amplifier
        Jimi

Does anyone know anything about Palmer based Magnum Series PGA-65 guitar amps? I live in Costa Rica and bought one new from a music shop but with the amount of moisture here the original box was destroyed along with any manuals, paperwork, etc.. The amp says it is manufactured in China and is solid state. It is supposedly 65 watts with 2 channels, clean and dirty with EQ sections on both channels. It also has send and returns and a spot to plug in your Cd player, etc.. It has a big badge on the front saying Magnum Series, Palmer Guitar Company, Fl Usa. I didn’t pay alot for it and for the price it is a decent sounding amp although I probably will replace the speaker with a Celestion.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the origins of Palmer guitars. I know a few people have said they are made in America but I cant find anything about that site. However there is a guitar maker and restorer called James Arthur Palmer in Stoke on Trent, England. If you simply google his name then nothing will come up but if you enter J.A.P. guitars it will lead you to his site. Hope this helps.

palmer guitar were originally designed using stolen alien technology for the blueprint. they also have the world’s smallest known nuclear reactor and also featuring a liquid nitrogen coolant system. hence the fact that nobody in the world knows anything at all about palmer guitars

I bought a Palmer P41N about a year ago and I really love the sound, the action, and the overall way it plays. I also have a Fender and a Sigma(Martin) acoustic and I think the P41n holds up well against them. I will usually pick up the Palmer if I am going to sing and play. It has a very bright sound with good bass and plays pretty loud. I love this guitar!!

Does anyone have any history about maybe where the P41N was made, etc?

You need to get a Repair Authorization (RA) number before sending it. They’ll toss in a manual if you ask for one. Nice fellow. Don’t know the model but I can at least confirm the instrument is from the late 70’s. To be exact, it was made on 11/16/77, the 14th instrument made that day.

        Another site mentions:

"According to the Blue Book of Acoustic Guitars, the 8-digit Takamine serial numbers have a form of YYMMDDXX, where the first two digits are the year; the second two, the month; the next two, the day; and the last two as the nth instrument made that day. If a 9-digit number, the last three digits would be the nth instrument made that day."

Good luck in finding exact model.

        ========

Thus, your guitar would be the 14th one made on December 11, 1991. :I am trying to find the model number of my guitar

In this case, the first 2 numbers must be added to the Year Takamine began, 1962, so your guitar was manufactured in April, 1999, #1153 for that production period.

I have a Takamine F400 which I bought back in the 70’s. It’s been well taken care of. I checked my serial number and it only had 7 numbers in it. Following what was said it starts 79 which I would take is 1979 in May. Last 3 numbers is 036. However, I thought I bought it earlier than 1979. Just curious why some Takamine’s only have 7 numbers.

      11. Takamine f340
        Rick

I have a takamine f340 that I need help with the serial number that is inked onto the headstock inside the soundhole. While most takamine guitars have 8 numbers in their serial number mine only is inked 47.4.8. It does have a paper label in the sound hole much like a dollar bill that designates it as an f340. I got the guitar in the early 70s an I am wondering why it only has 4 numbers in its serial number.

      12. Strange Serial Number
        Larry

I have a Takemine Accoustic/Electric with equalizer that I bought used in the mid 80s. I have never really cared what it was worth because she is my baby! However, in looking at the “logic” behind the serial numbers, I find that mine is a bit strange. Inside the sound hole is se “SEF-391-R (4BAND). Any idea when it was made?

Does anyone know where I can find out what the Takamine Series "letters" mean? Like EF, EG, G, etc. Also, is there a site anywhere where you can look up vintage guitars? I cannot find anything on this EF381M series that I picked up at a pawn shop. Great guitar. Plays and sounds awesome.

In 1982 I purchased new a Dauphin Mdl 25 + case. It’s been out of the
case perhaps 20 hours overall. Otherwise it’s been stored in a closet. The guitar is "as new", unmarked and perfect. I’d like to
sell it but have no idea what would today be a fair price. Anyone?

I would have to hear it somehow. That is the best way to set a price for a 20-year-old guitar. Where do you live??

: I’m looking for a Unisynth XG-1 guitar. Anyone know where I can find one that still works? -Thank you.

I have just got a hold of one of these.I bought it because it was really fun and interesting. This one needs a little work.At the low end of the fretboard,it cuts in and out.It does’nt always work there-from the 1st to the 5th fret.other than that, everything else seems to work fine.If you’re interested, give me an idea of value,or what you’re willing to pay.If you do want it,I can post it in my store on ebay and you can snap it up.If you dont want it,thats cool too,I can just auction it off when I’m done playing with it.It is pretty fun.
        Thanx,Darryl

I have this guitar in working condition with only the problem that the frets seem to be dissolving and make your fingers black. Do you happen to know how this can be repaired? Did you find one?
