  1. Kamouraska " Collection" Series
    Mike

    How are you all?
I have been looking all over the place for additional information on this classical guitar. Has certificate with serial number,
and is a " hand made classical". Supposedly, the maker named on cert. was father of small company in Quebec. Mine
was the last one made before company turned over to sons – went bankrupt.
Am looking for history, and present value. If any of you can give me any leads, appreciate it in advance.

      Hi Mike,

In the early years of the ’80, I worked in La Patrie Qc. at the Unisonic guitar shop where your guitar was made. There were three series of "Collection" guitars built at the time.

The shop was never given to "sons", but was founded by ex-rep of Norman guitars and the son of owner of the above!
After the closing of Unisonic inc. The ex-rep. and now sole owner of the shop, bought Norman guitars’ facilities in the village and started up on a new label: Godin…

Depending which model the price was at the time something near $250/350,can

          Hello, Jay-Jay,
I, too , just recently bought a pre-owned Kamouraska Concert. I have learned quite a bit more about its source and history through this site.
If you could answer my questions please. Can you please tell me if plywood has ever been used in this model? The wood inside has the grain of plywood -like. The top of the guitar is also similar. Am I wrong? I suspect that a dark ebony look-alike has been used on the top of the nut area, but not the fingerboard.
Thanks for any information you could share.
I also own a classical Aria from the ’70’s. I compare the interiors of both and they are quite different.
          Thanks.

Hi, I’m collecting any info on the guitar making history in the Eastern townships (Quebec)
          Following Jay-Jay’s comment
Unisonic were also making Lys acoustic guitar.
Kamouraska and Lys were registered trade marks in 1980 by Unisonic
I think Unisonic went down the drain but M.Godin bought back the facilities
and founded Lasido-Guitabec. They redesign Lys to become the Seagull line and
Kamouraska became without much modification, the La Patrie line of classical
They are top notch low end guitar in my opinion
Can you share serial no/model and pictures?
          Dan

: I have a Takamine EF350mc Aacoustic/electric guitar. Anoyone have any idea how much this is worth?
      : Thanks

I own one also. Bought it new about 3 years ago. Paid 850.00. This one has the Palathetic pick-up. I love the guitar and will probably never get rid of it.

      1. Re: Takamine Acoustic/Electric
        Frank Prescott

I still have my EF 350MC and still love it. I have been disappointed with the DSP pre-amp after using it for a while. The thing uses 2 AA batteries which will die after only several hours of use. My old Graph-EX used a 9 volt which never seems to lose it’s charge. The DSP will suck batteries dry if using the reverb or tuner too much. I like the tuner feature but will probably get the CT-4B EQ which has a tuner and uses the 9 volt battery.

        Rob Byfield

I bought mine from a pond shop about 4 years ago for $700. It’s a ’94, clear gloss finished maple, in great shape. I was told at a music store that it would have been around $1650 new, but I always take that kind of stuff with a grain of salt.

I saw the MSRP when I purchased mine. It was about 1200.00. Just recently I looked up the latest EF350 model and it listed at 1400.00. Check out the new Takamine DSP pre-amp. I replaced the Graph-EX pre-amp with the DSP. The sound is awesome. Takamine now offers pre-amp upgrades for guitars using the palathetic pick-up system.

I bought mine 10 years ago in San Diego for around 800 dollars. I think it listed around $1100. I have played mine for 10 years and had to have the first 5 frets replaced. It’s been a good quitar.

        Mark B., Garner, NC

I bought my EF350MC new sometime between 1989-90. I think I paid about $650 at the time. The shop owner/friend had said the price had just gone up and if it was put on the floor, anyone else would probably have paid $100-$150 more. Don’t know what it’s worth now but would also like to know. Still love it.

Yamaha G-260S was made in early 1980’s, retailed for approximately $400 Canadian Dollars new. If you have one in good condition, I’d say it’s a keeper.

Just picked up an Austin AG-330 here in the UK for an absolute bargain price of 40 GBP (which included a case!!). I can’t seem to find anything about it at all, machine heads scream mid to late 70’s to me. It plays extremely well, is loud with a rich, full tone and has an excellent sustain. Would love to know a bit more about it.

Sorry but the non-reverse models are not worth
the same price as the reverse models.

This is because the non-reverse models are not
        hotly sought after by collectors.

It’s still worth a couple of grand maybe 1800$ US
if in mint or near mint condition.

I also own a 12 string left hand lys guitar. The only info that I have about it is that apparently they were made in Quebec. They were all hand made, and I mean by that not made in mass production. Another thing that I have been told is that they would be the grandfather of either the Godin or Norman guitar. If you know anyone that would be interested, I have mine for sale.
      : Thanks!

In 1992 I bought a LYS L15 built in 1980. It´s a 6-string-guitare. Top, back and sides are from masive spruce. With the Guitar I´ve got a little brochure. If you´re interested send me your e-mail adress and I´ll try to send you a jpg-file from it.

      Eric

I actually have an LYS acoustic LYS L-10 guitar.
If you did not know the LYS is French for Lilly. On your guitar if you did not already notice the head stock is in the shape of a lilly flower. My acoustic was made in the 60’s and is made of all mahogany wood. SOLID MAHOGANY!. None of that cheap ply backing on others. I think all of them are handcrafted in Canada. I can say that it is one of the deepest and most buitiful sounding acoustic I have ever heard. If you have any web sites where I can find more info on Lys, Write back. Thanks
      Eric

I have maybe what you’re looking for. It is very possible I have a 1981 Lys 12 string guitar. My father worked in a guitar shop named Steve’s or something like that in Montreal in the beginning of the 80’s.He told me this guitar was one of the best of the shop and was worth a couple of thousand dollars.Even after twenty years, the metal strings are still good and the sound is fabulous.

I also have a 1981 Lys 6 string acoustic that I "inherited" from my sister. I enquired at a local music shop and was told that it was made in Quebec (the "lys" connection?) and that the manufacturer was bought out by Norman guitars. This person thought that the shop burnt down in the mid-eighties and after that the brand was discontinued. Has anyone heard this story?

I have a Lys 12 string, hand made by Gary Lys in 72-73? I don’t know much about it except that Lys had a small shop in Ottawa and later sold out to Seagull. It’s a great guitar. Cedar top, very unusual. It’s one of the best sounding guitars I own. Deep & rich. I have Fishman matrix pickup. I bought it in Madison WI from Spruce Tree Music. The owner, Will…knows more about the history of these guitars. Check out their website & leave him an e-mail. I can’t find it right offhand, but I check. I’ve modified my 12 to a 6 because we were worried about the durability, but I’ve pounded it on the road for 3 years with no problems.

I bought my hand made 6 – string LYS "L" in West Virginia in the spring of 1980. I have drug mine all around the world when I was in the military. I now work in a music store and the only info out there on LYS’s are the ones made after the sell out. I must say that after 21 years of hard living my baby sounds better than ever. I have modified it just a bit with new machine heads and a fishman pick-up. Other than some road scars it’s just the way Mr. LYS built her. Sorry I can’t give you any info you don’t already have but I thought you might like to know you are not alone as a LYS owner.
PS If you hear of another 12 String I am looking for one have been for a very long time.

              Hi,

They were hand made in Quebec Canada. The story I’ve heard is that the son of the fellow who made Norman guitars went off and formed his own company and that is LYS guitars. They are quite incredible, I have a dreadnaught cutaway and it is the only one I’ve ever seen. There is a rumour that the end result was the creation of seagull guitars, but I’m not really sure!

LYS is made in Quebec Canada in the early 80’s. It was owned by Robert Godin and is apparently ther predecessor to the Seagull line of guitars made by Lasido in southern Quebec. They make Norman and a few other lines as well. I have a 6 string L-10 dated 1980 with a serial number of 1114. The Lys line doesn’t exist. Don’t know if they made 12’s. There are new Norman 12’s and Seagull 12’s. There is a website but they aren’t known for being too responsive to email requests.

Sho-Bud was a company founded by Shot Jackson and Buddy Emmons in Nashville in the 1950’s Shot Jackson was a noted dobro and steel guitar player with the Duo Johnny and Jack. Buddy Emmon was and still is considered by many the greatest pedal steel guitar player of all time. Sho-Bud was THE pedal steel in the 60’s. Many still feel it’s the greatest.

After Buddy Emmons left the company because Shot would not incorporated cetain improvements Buddy wanted, he co-founded Emmons guitars with Ron lashly.

Sho-Bud was sold to Baldwin piano company in the 1970’s and then to Gretch. When Gretch folded, so did Sho-Bud. Now that Gretch is back, they are building and selling a few Sho-Buds.

You could check Bobby Seymour’s Nashville Pedal Steel site. There’s a ton of other information on steel guitars out on the web.

        Rich,
I bought one of those new in 1975 for about $160. out the door. I had it a couple of years. It was Japanise, a real nice axe/ bolt on neck. A LP custom copy. I made a reel good trade for a Ibanese korina flyin’ V.

I have a segova arch top guitar—really cool looking (on ax vault)—–I think its a tesico more or less the parts are definitely tesico style———-I thought it was a sekova (which I collect) but it has no sekova parts as compared to my other 50 sekovas. The segova is small possibly 3/4 neck with 19 frets. I watch ebay for segova guitars but have only seen 4 in the past 8 years. The electrics work but I have not set it up to play.

            Hi everyone,
I’m not sure either who makes them, as Segovia never made hard bodied acoustic Guitars, So it would have to be from a Japanese factory, whoever may have bought out Segovia. If you can find out who that company is, then you’d have a great lead in finding out more. I used to have a Segovia SAF-30 Session Series, and regret getting rid of it, as it had a nice sound… Any chance that someone over seas can help me find another one? Oh by the way I’m from Australia

: : Greetz from Holland John en Anita

              : Hi everyone,
: I’m not sure either who makes them, as Segovia never made hard bodied acoustic Guitars, So it would have to be from a Japanese factory, whoever may have bought out Segovia. If you can find out who that company is, then you’d have a great lead in finding out more. I used to have a Segovia SAF-30 Session Series, and regret getting rid of it, as it had a nice sound… Any chance that someone over seas can help me find another one? Oh by the way I’m from Australia

Here might be a clue to what you want. Some info on Segovia Guitars.

Guitar no longer in production, 1997 Limited edition, with satin finish, white binding on the body and fingerboard. This model was made in Taylor’s San diego-area factory. It is satin-finished throughout, with solid Sitka spruce top and solid Indian rosewood back (not quartersawn or bookmatched) and sides. Standard 14-fret-clear-of -the-body Grand Concert (analogous to Martin’s 000) size. No cutaway or onboard electronics. Bridge (rosewood) is pinless, which makes string-changing a relative breeze. Neck (relatively thin) is unbound solid mahogany, body and soundhole bound in standard b/w plastic. Pickguard is dark brownish plastic in Taylor’s signature baroque shape. Peghead rosewood veneer with Taylor logo inlaid in pearl. Plain pearl dots on average-width rosewood fretboard. Standard sealed chrome-finish Grover non-locking tuners. The guitar currently is installed with K&K sound Ultra Pure Western Soundboard Transducer. Installation of pickup did not require any alteration to the wood of the instrument. Guitar in stock quality comes with black molded SKB hard case.
