    1. TANARA GUITARS has website
      Angel

The Tanara website is now up, but I called them and they can’t give you any info. When you call you reach the distributors. They also distribute for Ibanez. They know nothing about the guitars and will say only that they are built from standard parts so you can find parts at most guitar shops. They don’t carry parts. They also can give me no information on the history of Tanara manufacture. The guy says the guitar is a cheapie, so they don’t know anything about them. If I were Tanara, I’d be disgusted with them as a distribution company.

    2. Re: TANARA GUITARS
      peter

I just bought a Strat-style TG Tanara in a thrift store. Body is black with a light brown sunburst behind the white pick guard. The pick guard is a laminate of three sheets of plastic, two whites with a black in the middle (which leaves a black stripe around the edge of the pick guard). A sticker at the base of the neck identifies it as "MODEL TS-30/BS". A white sticker at the back of the neck head measuring 1/2 x 1 inch has the number 27674 on it. Like the rest of the electrics mentioned here, it has three pickups, 1 volume control and two tone controls. It came in a brand new-looking gig bag that has "TKL" inside a Cadillac-type wreath crest and "TKL" on each zipper pull. Tag inside the bag has same "TKL" creast and reads MADE IN CHINA. I have NO idea if this bag is original to this guitar, but the bag itself is in the same apparently seldom-used condition the guitar is in. Sweet!! I would love to network with other owners and enthusiasts who know more about this guitar than I do.

        RON

Ok. This is getting even MORE interesting, now: I just bought another, seemingly identical guitar …. except this one is white and has the brand name AUSTIN on it. EXACT same body, bridge, tone/volume controls, selector switch, pick guard, & pickups. The only difference is in the headstock treatment and machine heads.

        : hey man, i have a tanara p-bass and i feel ya

I just recently saw and played 2 Tanara guits. Upon asking, the owner of one of them — who is a real pro, so I’ll take her at her word here — told me that Tanara is a subsidiary of the Ibanez corporation but (unlike, say, Squier/Fender) they aren’t generic Ibanezes made cheaply but a small guitar manufacturer that Ib subsidizes — maybe a tax write off? — and that they’re damned fine inexpensive instruments. Possibly the best for the low price. Judging by her Tanara acc/elec cutaway model and her neighbor’s dreadnaught (I jammed with them and played both), she may be right. Look for the price to go up as more people discover ’em. Grab ’em up while they’re cheap.

I was just on the Tanara Website. I will try to call them tomorrow. Wish me luck!

I bought a Tanara with a chipboard case for $25 yesterday. I love this guitar. It was missing parts, so I bought a $4 saddle with spring and screw, and replaced the missing string, and it sounds great!

            Angel

I called Tanara today, here’s the scoop on their connection to Ibanez. Chesbro distributes both Tanara and Ibanez, but they aren’t owned by Ibanez. You can’t actually ever get to talk to Tanara. Chesbro is their distributor. They don’t sell parts, because the guitars are assembled from standard pieces and too inexpensive for them to stock parts for. They couldn’t give me any information at all about my guitar either. Chesbro is a sucky distribution company, but I love my Tanara guitar.

My LP Tanara is AMAZING. It plays extremely well. I don’t know where it came from originally, but it seems like a dealer’s model, before setup. Anyway, after a setup it is a dream to play.

Seems like every couple of years I stumble across this post while searching for info on this beast. I at least found out its called the ‘TG-100’…

Its funny… I paid 300 for it almost eight years ago, I have several guitars valued at $1,000 or above, and this is still my go to girl.

      1. Tanara bass
        Mex Guy

My uncle just gave me an old Tanara Bass, like you I can’t find any info about it. The bass has rust and has some broken chips so I started restoring it, but I would like to know the specifications of the bass.
It’s a black Tanara bass with no serial number or any label on it.

      2. Old Tanara Electric Guitar, Can't find information on the brand?
        klinch

I was gifted an old Tanara guitar from family. They got it from a semi-famous rock band. It doesn’t work and I want to turn this into a little restoration project. I cannot find any information about this brand, Tanara, other than it is a guitar that is sold by Chesbro… I found one source saying Chesbro just imports the guitars from Korea and Indonesia, but I can’t find any sources to credit that. Does anyone know anything about who makes this guitar and where it comes from? The only marked number is on the back of the guitar, which reads -8903112. I was hoping to use original parts in this restoration. I can’t even figure out the model of this guitar, there is little to no information on the web about this brand of guitars, and the website for Tanara has changed multiple times over the years…what kind of insanity is this??

      3. Tanara SD 28S
        Fred

I purchased my Tanara somewhere around 84 to 87. I remember playing many guitars in the store and kept coming back to the Tanara. It was around the 350 dollar mark which was comparable to most acoustics in the store at that time. The intonation of this guitar is amazing for the price point. I’ve had to have the frets reworked and adjusted the truss a couple of times. This guitar gets better sounding every year. Whenever I play it I get many compliments on how good it sounds. I have a couple of friends who are Martin and Taylor fanatics. They have 3000 dollar guitars and when we play they always want to play my Tanara.. The tones are very balanced from bass to treble. I’ve thought about putting a thin line pickup in it but am afraid it might harm the intonation. If you find a Tanara TD 28s.. Buy it !!!!

      4. I also have a Tanara electric, I have never been able to find any information about who made it or the year. What I can say is this, I bought this guitar with a hard case for $50. the body shape is exact match to a late 80’s Fender Bullet, not squire bullet which is a cheap strat, my Tanara is Strat shaped but smaller in most dimemsions, it has a tele neck-solid maple, with a fender style skunk stripe, it has two enclosed humbuckers, one volume, one tone , a three way selector and a small toggle switch, which I have always assumed was a coil splitter, or possibly a phase shifter. Mine is black with a black three ply pick guard, the black finish has a very faint metal flake deep in the finish, not near the surface, as I said the neck is all maple, with a tele shaped head, it plays fast and easy like a tele too. If you google images for “Fender Bullet” it’s almost exactly like the creamy white one that comes up near the top of the list. I think it was one hell of a bargain for 50 bucks and plan to keep playing it,probably forever. I know Fender purists don’t like to hear this but I am convinced that this guitar was made by the same factory that was making M I J Fender in the 80’s, it too much like those Bullets. If you’d like to discuss these guitars, I can be found over on the discussions forums USGold.

      5. Old Tanara's Rock!
        Anonymous

I have a 1987 Tanara TD-28S. It’s a Martin D-28 style with a bit sturdier interior bracing. Solid spruce top…aged to deep amber perfection….with a crack. Beautiful purfling. Silver-nickel frets. Gold Grover tuners. Rosewood…(Indian…but it is patterned so nice…it almost looks Brazilian)…back and sides. I replaced the nut/saddle and pins with Wyoming Buffalo bone…and added faceted Wyoming Garnets to the pins heads. Then, added new Elixir 13 – 56 strings. It is one beautiful…(I mean drop dead gorgeous sounding) sounding guitar. I found it in a Utah pawn shop and paid $55.00 I’m sitting at my library today…and all I want to do is go home and play it. In fact, everytime I woke up last night…I thought of playing it. If you don’t have a guitar that makes you nuts like mine does…you haven’t found your soul mate yet;-)

I called the Chesbro distribution center in Idaho and talked with a helpful guy there and he did a bunch of research and called me back a few days later. Tanara is the founders grand-daughters name. The “S” in the model designation, not surprisingly stands for “Special”. I haven’t seen another like it….so I doubt they made very many. It is a very high quality…Korea made…instrument. Too many people discount the quality from Asian companies. Don’t listen to the Parrots!

Value wise…my guitar is my favorite acoustic and I have guitars selling for 2 – $3,000.00
It’s all about the quality and sound, guys. If you like the sound and looks…buy it. In fact, I’m looking at a 12 string of the same year…and it is on sale for $200…which is still a steal…unless you are the kind of person that gets a bigger thrill out of saying” Martin, Taylor, etc”….rather than simply having the quiet confidence of actually knowing value.

        Cheers from Wyoming!

        1. I have this very same guitar, purchased new in 1987 for about $350, I think. I had a luthier do a bit of work on it, bringing the strings a little closer to the neck.

Your observations are spot on! This is a wonderful guitar, very well-made and it sounds better every year! I took it to another luthier a couple of years ago, just to have it looked at. She said the neck looked really good and that there really wasn’t anything else to do to it. I love to check out other guitars, but really haven’t played on one (under $5000) that I would like better than this old Tanara. One of a very few really smart purchases in my life!

I am also looking for info on this nice sounding guitar. Have no idea what yr is was made but would like some feedback on anyone out there who may know as well as the value. Thanx

      7. I don't know about the newer
        Anonymous

I don’t know about the newer Tanara guitars. I purchased mine some where in the early eighties. It is by no means a cheap built guitar. It has a solid top. the sides are not laminated either. tuners are very fine. It has great action and it sound will rival any 1000 to 2000 dollar guitar. I am currently having the action adjusted and the frets filed. So my question is… Was the old Tanara built differently then the new Tanara.
