I tried to find out info on this classical 6 string guitar but none on this model #. made in japan and beautful red wood. would like to know age and price

This GG174 is made during the Kustom ownerhip of the Goya brand. This period was Sept 1970 – June 1972.
Regarding value, I would say anywhere between 650 – 1000 USD on Ebay.

classical (concert?) guitar F-27 Serial # 181511. Made in Sweden by the Goya Co
The F-27 and the F-25 are sort of odd birds, Tom.
The Goliath body size (similar to Dreads), flat, wide fretboard, allmost like on a nylon string classical guitar.
The Guitar is designed for steelstrings, and have 14 frets to the body and slotted head.
The most unusual detail is that the top is fanbraced, like on a classical guitar.
From what I have heard this most often meant that the top lifted sligtly behind the bridge, which often resulted in need of neck resets.
I think a fair price for one of these would be 300 – 500 $ depending on condition. I know someone in Sweden who would love to have one of these. They were never offered over here, they all went for export.

Couple of Questions for you guys. I have recently purchased a Goya G-163. I am told it was built in 1974. It has a label that reads"distributed by Dude industries" Is this a swedish made Goya?
Also I have 1 damaged bridge screw- is there a sousce for replacing them?
Also what do you think of converting the adjustable screws to a bone saddle?

The G-163 was introduced in 1969. The first Year it had "Goya Music, New York" on the label and was marked with serial number. Later, sometime 1970 or 71, Goya was sold to Kustom Electric, Chanute Kansas and the labels changed to an ornament picture (actually an anagram with HCL for Herman Carlson Levin) with the selling slogan "The Special Sound". The serial numbers were dropped and at the bottom of the label it said "Handmade in Sweden". After Kustom went bankrupt, the rights were taken over by Dude Inc. also Chanute Kansas. I am not shure when, but do beleive in 1972.
During my inquiries among people with background in the Levin company, which includes the President throughout the sixties and seventies, no one recalls any deliveries to Dude, so these guitars may very well be re-labeled remains from the Kustom bankrupcy. These are my own speculations, mind You…
Anyway, in 1973 a new line of Levin flattops were introduced and I have never come across any of these Goya branded, and also the same year Martin overtook the Levin company, and started a small scale import of Levins to US.
My own speculation is that Martin terminated the manufacturing of Goyas in Gothenburg. A few years later, Martin bought the Goya brand from Dude and started import of Japan made guitars, and later moved production to Korea and Taiwan.
So, To answer Your dating question, I doubt that it is made in 1974, rather 1971-1973.
Regarding the saddle screws, the thread is metric fine-thread, called M8-75, meaning 0.75 mm per rotation. They are not that easy to find, but I have come across som spare on ocasion, remains from people who did as You suggest, replace them with a traditional bone saddle, which probably improves the sound.
Long answer, sometimes I get carried away…

It is at a local luthier at the moment for some repairs and a set up but I will get back to you about the bolted neck- what is the significance of the bolted neck?
It is a great sounding and beautifully finished guitar(one of the best sunburst finishes I have ever seen). I had never heard of Goya or Levin until I found this guitar but i am a fan now!

The Levin made flattops from the years 1957 until the early seventied had bolted necks, but they switched to traditional "dovetail" joint sometime in the early seventies. I have seen model 163 and 174 with both types of neck joints. There is no significance as far as I can tell regarding sound qualities, but fact is that a neck reset is far less complicated on a bolted neck, which should reflect on the price for such a repair by a luthier.
If the bolts are loosened, the only glue-joint to dis-assemble is between the fretboard and the top.

Yes, They tried initially to export to US under the Levin name, but were adviced by Hershman Music to chose another name as Levin were said to sound to jewish for the conservative Folk Music market in US. Hershman recommended the Goya name after the spannish painter, who often had gutarists in his paintings. A funny detail is that Goyish means non-jewish in jiddish, which was totally unintentional, according the the Levin people I have met.
In the beginning the catalogs said "Goya by LEVIN", but the Levin part was abandoned.
In the seventies after the Martin takeover, Martin imported Levin guitars under the Levin name, but not in very large scale.

I inherited my now-deceased father’s Goya Semi-Acoustic Electric Panther Bass. I’m uncertain of the year. The only #’s I can find are on the back: N4496, MADE IN ITALY. I’m guessing very early 70’s, since he worked for Kustom Electronics in Chanute, Ks. around 1970-71, and he says he bought it from Kustom while working as a guitar-tuner. If anyone can provide any additional info regarding the model/year/value, I’d certainly appreciate it. I’m also looking for a spare pickguard to replace the original.

There are no lists for Goya in the sixties. What I can say is that T-18 was introduced in 1965 and replaced in 1969.
In 1967 they introduced individual saddle-screws instead of a standard saddlebone, in the bridge. This may give You a "ballpark" figure.

I have never heard of a T-13. Perhaps it is a T-18?

If so, the neck has an adjustable trussrod, which allows straightening the neck if the relief is to big (neck is like a bow). Most likely the neck needs a reset, if the action is to high. The good news is that the T-18 has a bolt on neck, which makes a neck reset fairly cheap if left to a proffesional repairman. At least cheap compared to a guitar with a dove tail neck joint.
I recomment You to leave it to a proffesional. It is a to nice instrument to take risks by doing it yourself…

I have a 1958 Goya (Levin) Sunburst acoustic guitar, Model M-22, serial no. 376100, made in 1958. I got it in 1962 when I was 10 years old and have been the sole owner. It has had very little use. No scratches, excellent shape. Label says ” Goya made by A.B. Herman Carlson Levin, Gothenburg, Sweden.” Metal plate at top says “Levin 1900”. I am interested in selling it if anyone is interested. What do You want to know?
M22 was one of the first Goya branded steelstring flattops made by Levin for the US market. I think it was introduced 1957 or 58. In 1964 or 65 it changed name to N-22, and had somewhat more radius on the fretboard, and the fretboard dots adjusted towards the bass side. in 1969 it changed again, to "model 161", which had a new design of the headpiece and the pickguard. I think it was discontinued after 1973, when Martin bought the Levin company.
The spec of the guitar is basically:
– Concert size
– Back and sides of birch
– top of spruce
– mahogany neck
– Rosewood fretboard
– Adjustable trussrod
– Bolt on neck

There was actually a Goya 161 sold recently on Ebay for the amazingly low price 89$.
Based on sales I have seen of the predecessor Goya N-21, a normal price would be from 150 up to perhaps 300$ in resonably good shape.
Your cracked neck obviousely reduces the price, but I would expect a good bit above 100$.
The 161 was available from 1969 to 1972.

I have a vintage goya – 161. It has a fracture in the back of the neck. My husband – a guitarist and collector- says it may last forever or it make break when played. Does this Goya have any value in its present condition?

When I look inside, appears to be a block of wood – Mohagany? joining the neck to the body. Not sure if this is a truss rod that can be adjusted or not. I can push a small screw driver into the hole but does not engage for adjustment. Maybe I should try some allen wrenches? I would like to get the action lowered on the guitar but need to know if that is adjustable. Lokking for manufactured year of instrument as well

I have a Goya G-30, purchase somewhere around 1971 or so. I have kept it in environmentally controlled conditions for about 35 years. It has not been used in that time and is in mint condition as is the case. I always thought I would find the time to learn how to play it, but arthritis has caught up with me at age 70. I am going to sell it. Not sure of it’s value, but have been told probably between $1000 and $2000. Maybe more. It is a beautiful instrument. The Serial Number is 51043, but I think it is the Serial Number given it by the Dude, Inc. distributor that had Goya distribution rights about that time and later sold thos rights to Martin. The Levin guitar company of Sweden manufactured these guitars, the Levin 172 and the Goya GG172 (for export to US) between 1969 and 1973, when a new Levin line of flattops were introduced. It is possible that the Goya GG172 was offered some years longer, but I have not had that confirmed.
The 172 model replaced the Levin LT16 / Goya T16 wich was basically the same design, introduced 1965, replacing the LS16/S-16, which were offered since the late 1950:s.

Martin purchased Goya back around 1978. The classical guitars were actually made in Japan for Martin, and were originally sold in the $250-$280 range. They are a nice sounding and playing guitar, but not terribly valuable. There are a lot of them around, and a nice one would probably still fetch around $200.00. I would take it with you and play it.
A friend asked me to tuned up two G125 that were hidden in a closet collecting dust. They are in great condition and they sound crystal clear. Unfortunately, I play the acoustic. thank you for your input.

I have a Martin Goya Classical guitar G125 in pristine condition. I use it as a second guitar when I play gigs. the model number is the only number in the guitar. Where is the serial number? Can anyone tell me if these Martin imports are all solid woods, or are they laminated?
If the Model # is followed with an S then it is constructed of solid wood. If not it is laminate but that has it’s advantages as it will weather with less tendency to crack. They made both. The more ornate and expensive models were solid woods. On the cheaper models the sound hole is cut out and the decoration around the hole is a decal which suffers with time. The up side is it is easy and cheap to replace. I have a Korean made G300 myself but would love to find a G635 S. Some were made under the Greco Name but are the same as Goya. The age and construction gave them a sound beyond what the value and reputation would lead you to expect. Mine is not expensive but plays smooth and easy and all I had to do to brighten it up was put in a bone saddle. It sounds much better than some new solid wood guitars. 40 plus years have mellowed the sound box beautifully. Some were made in Japan and some under the same name were made in Sweden. Julie Andrews plays a European Goya in the sound of music.

I bought it from a man in his ’50s at a garage sale. He said he bought it when he was in his 20s, but he didn’t say if he bought it new. I looked up the serial number (51364; the guitar has the original nameplate inside) and according to the list, it was produced in 1923. I find that rather hard to believe. I’m thinking 60s. It is in perfect condition. Not a scratch. In the hardcase compartment there was even a psychedelic-colored pick. HAHA

I have aGoya M-26 who has had a short history with me. As has been previously posted, the guitar was made sometime in 1958 by the great AB Herman Carlson Lewis in Gothenburg, Sweden. It is alas a rare and undervalued guitar imo has a great sound but is thoroughly used nevertheless. The finish has been decaying over time but still holds and the neck needs a reset, other wise the head and bolts is in great condition and the wood provides a nice tone (I do believe it is brazilian wood). It will be polished before I put it on auction and I will remove strings as well. It is a goliath size giuitar with a sunburst flame maple finish and alp spruce top. It is again a rare model I believe and someone has posted its estimated value at $200-600. I was just wondering what price I should consider starting the bid on ebay? I bought a Goya Medalist Series 12 String Acoustic (Model m-75-12 Serial#3457) 15 years ago at a second hand store. Six of the pins are missing that hold the strings to the bridge and there is a small crack at the base of the neck, but it still sounds good. Anyone have any idea what this guitar might be worth?

These guitars still can be found now and then and as people are not aware of the quality Levin provided in this
model prices are not that high. However, to my believe a W32 Levin is no less than a Martin D18.
But famous brands mostly fetch hogher prices. I would say a Levin W32 in good condition should do between
1000 and 1500 USD

Most of these were solid spruce top and back with maple sides, Brazilian Rose Wood Fretboard, mahogany neck…if it sounds good then it is good…mine is wonderful and I own a lot of guitars.

hi!,, my father recently passed on, and left me his gutiar, i love the sound, and play it all the time now, even more then my fender teelcaster custom 78.. i really love the goya, and would never part with it, i have memorys of me touching as a young child on my fathers gallery, im only 25 so i dont imagine its very old or valuable, but as you can understand its priceless to me.

There is no info available anywhere regarding Goya serial numbers after around 1960, before this they used numbers from Levins series. However the N21 was introduced in 1965 and discontinued in 1969. In 1967 individual saddle screws in the bridge were introduced.

The serial number 1562 is printed on the label. I am the second owner, I assume the stress from the 12 strings caused the top to raise up slightly. This, in turn has raised the action somewhat. It has a wonderful, clear, booming sound. If anyone can tell me what they think it’s worth, I would greatly appreciate it.

If You have a raised top around and behind the bridge, this usually causes two difficulties; 1) the actions is high, 2) the tilting of the bridge itself limits the string pressure on the saddlebone (or saddlescrews if You have that type of bridge).
My experience of GG5 Goyas and the predecessor TS5 is that the ladder bracing under the spruce top was extremely massive, so I am surpriced that it is raised. Some of the latest GG5:s, with the neck joint at the 14th fret, were X-braced, which might be more sensitive in this respect. The neck joint of these were also dovetail, making a neck reset significantly more complicated.(The older were bolt on necks.)
I beleive that the label with "The Special Sound" was used in the early 70:s while Kustom was the distributor in US.
My experience from Ebay is that the price for these guitars varies between 300 – 800$ depending on shape and service needs….
After all, they were made by Levin Guitars, and of extremely fine solid woods. These blond flamed maple guitars are also extremely nice for the eye…
I own a Goya presumably bought i Gothenburg. Model S-18 serial number 375524, made by A.B. herman Carlsson Levin, Gothenburg, Sweden (All this from the text on the inside. By the the serial number I can gather that i was made in 1958 and it is still in excellent/very good condition, with the Levin 1900 plate still in place and just a minor scratch on the front. Do understand it corectly that these acoustics where sould first in 1957? Is there anyone who can roughly estimate its value?
I am selling a G-12, same year, on Ebay as of May 18, 2007.
Day and a half left on the auction. Good condition. No bids yet, 135 people have visited the item. Time will tell the value.

Goyas were, as You say, made by the Levin Guitar Company in Gothenburg Sweden. The first Goya catalog came in 1954 but You may be right about 1957 about the Goliath sized flattops, with adjustable trussrods.
Your guitar is most likely sold in US, which was the market for Goya, in other countries the guitars were sold under the Levin brand.
The S-18 was the 3rd model from the top in the late 50:s. The top of the line was M-50, followed by M-28, but the two top models were discontinued in early 60:s.
The S-18 was replaced in 1965 or 66 by the T-18. In 1969 the T-18 was replaced by model 174, which lived until 1973 when Martin Guitars bought the Levin company. In 1976 Martin started manufacturing of Goyas in far east of significantly lower quality.
My experience is that a Goya S-18 in good condition would sell for 600 – 900 $ on Ebay.

I bought my Goya Model G10 S/N 350128) in 1956, when I moved up to a new teacher in Buffalo, NY.
It has always been used only for personal pleasure, and was recently inspected by a professional who re-glued a couple small cracks, so it now sounds good as new.
Any idea what it is worth? I’m not that interested in selling it, but wonder if it needs a new hard case, and a bit more attention to its care.
Throughout the 66 years I’ve had it, I used it mostly to entertain my children and grandchildren, but my great-grandchildren aren’t really interested in anything like that .

My father received this gift around 1960 from a fellow teacher who nominated my dad to work with the kids doing school theater productions. He did that for a few years and then moved on to school administration. After my brother and I were born, he’d get it out once in a while and play folk songs for us. Otherwise, the Goya has been packed away in it’s case for all these years. I know he’s always wondered what the old thing is worth, and I’d love to find out for him. It’s in pretty darn good shape as it’s been used so little. Any ideas?

I am attempting to do some research for a friend on a guitar that was handed down from a family member, info kinda sketchy…here is what I have – Goya 6 string made by A.B. Herman Carlson [Levin?], in Gothenburg, Sweden for Hershman Musical Instrument Co., NY with serial number 327441…ANY INFO IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!! It may have possibly been made in 1955, according to one of the list I found, not sure! THANKS
The Model Number has been handwritten on the label, and must be G-25. The Serial Number should also be handwritten. This is one of the first Goya guitars made, lateron the Model Number and the Serial Number were stamped. Most likely there is an extra line on the label saying: distributed by Hershman. According to the information I have, dating it to 1955 seems accurate, as the Goyas with Herman Carlson Levin marking are numbered within the Levin serial lists.
The G25 is listed as "discontinued model in the 1957 catalog.

I have a Goya/ CF Martin acoustic guitar. It looks exactly like a Martin D41 Same wood same Inlay same everything except the Goya Name. It has no serial number but inside the sound hole is model G-341. Can anyone give me any info on possible year it was made and if it was made in Japan or Korea. I have owned it since 1990’s. Thanks!
Goya model G-13 serial #285806 that I purchased new in 1966 or 67. Would like to know approximate value range and date of manufacture.
My dad bought his goya in the navy, I researched it and it’s approximate value is 210 in the manufactured year of 67′ but is approximately 300 used today.

I would say early 60:s. If the label says N.Y. 10 it is pre july 1963, when zip codes were introduced. After this it would say N.Y.10010.
The Levin/Goya 12 string from these years were built like tanks, with extremely heavy bracing under the spruce top. This makes the sound a bit thin. Also, the flat wide fingerboard makes them a bit hard to play. Otherwise they are very well built, Like all Levin built Goyas.
My experience from ebay is that they tend to sell for 200-400 $

I have a Goya G500E N. Purchased new in 91. It’s a six-string slimline acoustic cutaway with pickup and eq. Spruce top and back/sides. Sounds warmer and warmer every year I pick it up, though my son plays it more now. It was a Korean-made Martin. Action has lifted slightly. Still makes for a great backup!

I think Goya was originally from Sweeden (Levin). CF Martin purchased the Goya line in 1970’s and manufactured them in Korea until 1996.
I have a Solid Black Martin/Goya Guitar Model: G500E-B, that was manufactured in Korea.

Yes, I have one. Mine says G500E N and was made in Korea. It’s a single cutaway electric-acoustic steel string. I love it, actually. Can’t find anything about it though. I would like to know what type of woods it’s made from.

Has an oval sound hole and rosewood fingerboard.
