Got one, looking for another. They are robust, jangly, have exceptionally rock-hard necks, some models have cheapo tuners, the Ranger series weighs a ton…solid. The finish is over a millimeter thick and terribly prone to large surface checks, but they are only cosmetic. The usual prices on eBAY run from sometimes a little below $100 to over $300…usually about mid-$100’s plus shipping expenses. To my way of thinking, they are incredible bargains, but are not known as collectible. They are just good workhorses. I actually prefer the Ranger series 12’s over the higher-end Rio Bravos as with age, things move, action gets poorer, and the Ranger is incredibly easy to adjust the neck using shims. Just my thinking. Wanna sell yours? Gordon Furr

: I have an e-ros model 406 with the serial number 1085 inprinted on the inside of the guitar and recanti, the headstock is of natural colour and all that is on it, is what looks like an "E" fom the epiphone logo carved in to the top of the headstock, can anyone help???????

      Paul

I know all the blurb says that these were only available up to ’70. However my wife owns one that was purchased c80 (and so far as we can tell it was new).

Of the pictures shown on fetish you can not make out the serial numbers on many. One or two however are showing four digit numbers – this one has a five. Maybe this infers that they were available later?

It is blonde in color & I know it’s made before 1960, other then this I know nothing. Well i have just started to try and find out more on Stadium guitars,I have my Aunts old guitar that needs some repair ,but she told me that she was given this guitar back in 1956 and it’s been in the family ever since. I want to bring it back to life so i can pass it down through the family, but i don’t trust just anyone to fix it.I may just do it myself. The guitar is an arch top. It needs a new fret board and frets, and the neck reset. The body is in great shape, but needs ro be redone. She played up to 2000 than she gave it to me when the neck started to unglue and come off. The heck joint seems to be in fine shape. I’ve been fixing old electric guitars for while now and i my try to fix it,but never tried to fix an acoustic before.

      ElChivato

I recently bought a Stdium brand guitar from a dude who told me that they were made by New York Pro. It’s black with a white pick guard and nice looking. But it has no model number or anything. Just the Staidum logo on the head, so I don’t know what the model is, and looking on the stadium site I can’t fond a model like it, so I don’t really know what to do about figuring out the model.

      Shawn Ryan

The Stadium Guitar brand was/is put out by Lou Capece Music. Lou started his own music distribution company in his garage in Long Island, NY and now has a huge company in Long Island. He produces guitars under the Stadium brand as well as other musical instruments. For exact info, you could probably reach Lou himself and ask, although he’s very busy. 800.321.5584 is the phone number, and his extension is 1. Hope this helped!

Are they made in Korea, China, Vietnam? I cannot find any info on where these are made. Where do the parts and woods come from? The prices for these guitars are not cheap -I’d hate to pay for one and find the quality be sub-par.

Never heard of this brand of guitar, however I came across one at GC used gear. When I got it I was very surprised to see how nice it looked and the quality. A rosewood fretboard the top of the guitar is laminated spruce the back and sides are a type of mahogany it’s the light color. Put new strings on it with a small setup, didn’t have to adjust the truss rod. The nut and bridge are plastic, the turners are cheep but work ok. This is a cutaway version but not an electric which means you can put your own setup in it. The frets are medium with a little sharpness on the edges not a big deal though. Sound quality is good didn’t find any dead spots haven’t had it but a few days and this is the best review I can give at this time.

Wow… My first electric was a Washburn G-2V that a buddty of mine bought from a pawn shop and resold to me for what he paid ($175 back in 1989).
I remember it was painted cherry red, but a previous owner had decorated it up with strips of black and white elecrtical tape – giving it the "Eddie Van Halen" look.

That’s the only G-2V I’ve ever run across… As I recall, it wasn’t a bad little guitar for the money – but mine had some sort of grounding problem, causing some nasty pickup noise/buzzing with some amps, depending on the switch position.

: i have a washburn g-2v electric guitar. if anyone would like to purchase or knows how much this is worth please contact me.

I have a Washburn G-2v with a single pickup, Floyd Rose tremolo and shark tooth inlays- And people keep telling me that those never existed. And the Washburn website is no help. I’m trying to sell it for $179, and I’ve had tons of interest, but no takers. Can anyone out there confirm that this guitar actually exists and mine is not a hodgepodge of different guitars?? Thanks in advance!

  3. Fender Dou-Sonic II

This guitar isn’t for sale. I am researching what is the approximate value of this guitar. I purchased it new in 1968. It is in excellant condition and is all original except for the strings. The body is a bone white color with a red plate. I understand that Fender manufatured this model for two years in 1967 and 1968.

  4. Fenton Weill Triple master
    john martin

I have a Fenton Weill Triplemaster which I believe dates from ’59/’61.I’d like to find out more from the serial number(1223).
In ’59, Jim Burns(Burns Guitars) hooked up with Henry Weill(Selmer,Vox and disco lighting!)In ’61 they split, I think unhappily.Weill continued to use the name and Burns designs;that’s about as much as I know.
I’d like to find out what the story was and is my Triplemaster part of the tale.

  6. stadium guitar
    Dan

I found an old guitar at salvo for 10 bucks and was wondering if anyone knew anything about it. It looks as if it were from the 50s or earlier. The name on the end of the fretboard is called stadium and shows little people walking into a stadium. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this brand. Thank you.

    1. Re: stadium guitar
      Philip Smith

That sounds cool. Some old guitars are worth alot, but some,
even if they are old, are not worth much. To determine how old it is, I would look at the metal, if it is still pretty
shiny, I would guess late sixtys, but if it is very rusty,
I would say that you are correct. The reason why some of the old ones are not worth much is sometimes that the electronics were not great in the first place or there is
very little demand for it. I love old guitars though. But
there are many in existence. You may still want to try
getting it checked out at a store.

      Hey Darren
      Are you still out there?
I have an an old Guiseppe acoustic guitar in a jazz Epiphone Zenith style!
The head stock has the name in embossed mother of pearl inlay.
Mine is apparently about a 1930’s era guitar and it is amazing to play.
Have you found out anything more about yours?

      1. Zenith Style Guiseppe
        Jonathan Coley

I’ve also got an example of one of these, with sbit of history.
Mine clearly started life out as a sunburst c.1935-7, but other than one other example, of a different style in an instrument museum in Germany, where they were made, I’ve seen no other examples.

        Does yours retain the sunburst?

Well, if you want to find that, ask yourself how old is it.
Squiers are not worth much. In my opinion, I would say 200 to 500 dollars

The shop manager Julian is a luthier by trade and they still have all the original templates so if you want a new one made give them a ring, or if you just want some info on your own guitar I’m sure they would be happy to help. I have a Fingerbone Tele that I bought in bits a few years ago. It has turned into one of those ‘unfinished projects’ It has a curly maple neck with (I assume) ebony fingerboard. The body is a sort of orange sunburst with a couple of dings in it. It was designed for a humbucker (original still there) and two ‘rails’ type single coils (which I have bought) One of the tuners is missing and it could do with some work, but obviously a very high quality guitar. I could be persuaded to part with it – email me on [email protected] for some pics.

Hello, really pleased to see some information on fingerbone. I hate to admit it, but bought a fingerbone via e-bay last week (the e-bay bit not the guitar!) It came from a shop (twang guitars) in London. It does not have a serial number. The guitar is in pretty good order, 6 string, fantastic top, green/blue in colour with Grover tuners, Kahler hardware, humbucker and a single coil pick up. I think its great, feels and plays very well. Would love to know a bit more about it, age etc, is it likely to be a Paul Richardson manufactured guitar, or later when Mark took over the name. Any info gratefully received, happy to send a picture if that would help.

        Hi
I bought this from Sevenoaks Guitar Centre about 1992, at that time they had a lot of guitar parts and I put about 10 or 12 together (see previous entry) I sold it to a friend of mine around about 1994/5 period he had it a while and moved it on to a work mate.

It should be loaded with a Kent Armstrong single coil at the neck and a chrome covered Rocker at the bridge coil tapable these were made at Kent’s place in Shadoxhurst.

The stock that your guitar came from was a bulk load of bodies done in various colours and design, yours has standard shaped pickups but they were often trapezeoid in shape.

You have a flipover locking topnut which came with the Khaler trem but last time I saw it a couple of the locks were broken.

If you look at the spacing on the 12th and 13th fret you’ll see that the spacing is reversed, the frets were hand cut and often weren’t completely accurate, haveing said that it played perfectly and the ebony board used to feel great and would set up with a really low action.

Sound wise, it sounded great clean and probably suits blues country britpop styles more than metal.

I saw it in Twang guitars and played it a while – still felt like my guitar, but the finish compared when I’d had it had taken a bit of a bashing, not terrible but certainly not straight out of the box as new which it was when it left me.

It’s a nice guitar which could do with a little TLC, I went back to Twang to buy it back but it had already gone on Ebay, I’d been watching it biut missed the sale, I would have put a new neck on it to the old shape and had it refinished at Sims back to new.

        Enjoy it

I have two, made for me in 1987 and 1988. The guy who made them was called Paul Richardson, if memory serves me correctly! He was originally based near Tunbridge Wells and then moved to Brighton. He made me an Explorer with very fancy inlays and the best Stratocaster I’ve ever played. Great guitars, but he struggled against Paul Reed Smith who turned them out all the time. In my opinion Fingerbone are much better and were made to suit an individual’s requirements and it was a shame when he stopped making them through lack of funds and sold the name to someone else who did not make them with the same attention to detail.

Largely through this site and from this thread, I’ve been contacted by quite a few of my old friends from the Fingerbone days: would it be worth me putting a website together for the old guitars, do you think? I could put pictures of instruments (and the old workshop etc) up there, with some details and perhaps some serial number information? If anyone’s interested (owners of instruments who are prepared to supply pictures, especially) then drop me a line at [email protected].

        Cheers,

After Paul left the old Manson Guitars workshop in Crowborough, he moved his workshop to Brighton and shared premises with the excellent acoustic guitar maker Mathew Carter. I believe that Mathew is is still producing instruments and may still be in contact with Paul. The last time I spoke to Paul, he was building loft conversions, as it paid better than building guitars! What a waste!!!!!

: I have a fingerbone 4 sting bass, serial No 86222, bolt on Maple neck, ebony fingerboard, flamed maple top over Mahogany body, ebony pickup covers. Hello Dave,

I might be pursuaded. I’ve owned a Fingerbone 6 string solid-body for some 10 years, and I’m thinking of selling it to make way for a quality acoustic.

I have to confess, however, that until I found this site (in preparation for advertsing the guitar on e-bay) I knew very little about Fingerbones. So please excuse my comparative ignorance !

Mine is a Les Paul shape, with a beautiful cherry sunburst finish. It has a glued on neck and what looks like a rosewood fingerboard with a nice low action.

It has two humbuckers, gold plated volume and tone controls and all other hardware is gold plated too(including removable pickup covers). Machine heads are schallers with pearloid buttons. It is a joy to play.

In fairness, it is not in mint condition. There are a few dings in the lacquer finish, but the wood (the important bit !) is undamaged. Frets are in good shape and the intonation perfect.

I paid £350 for it 10 years ago, second hand from a music shop in Maidstone. The shop didn’t have a clue about it either ! I was attracted by it’s alluring appearance and it’s playability. Since then it has seen only sporadic action…I still love my Telecaster the best !

I would consider parting with it for the right price, and am happy to provide more detail if you wish.

I will withold my e-bay advert for the time being.

            Graham

Hello chaps – it’s me. The Fingerbone episode of my life ended quite painfully (and was followed by a difficult couple of years), so consequently I failed to stay in touch with anyone from those days. I regret this, as many were good friends – I remember you especially, Andy, and think that you may have bought the last Fingerbone I ever sold (you must have had quite a collection by then!). I haven’t made a guitar since then. I found this discussion as a result of my first-ever Google search for Fingerbone – my son Ted, who was born the week I opened for business in Crowborough, is now a 20yr old commercial music student (better guitarist than his dad, thankfully) and wants to see if we can find one of my old guitars. I never owned one…
So if anyone has one they would part with, I’d be glad to hear from them. After I stopped (in 1989ish, I think) the Fingerbone name was taken over by a guy called Mark Hammock – I don’t think there should be much confusion over which instruments were which, though. If anyone wants to know more they are welcome to get in touch. I still have a lot of photographs that might be useful for identification, and many of the old invoices with the guitars’ serial numbers: so I might be able to tell you an instrument’s manufacturing and first sale history from the serial number.
Best wishes to everyone from those days,
          Paul

                Hi, Paul!

A friend of mine sold me a Fingerbone bass a few years ago, which everyone who touched fell in love with. It played, as they say, like butter!

All was well until a couple of weeks ago when someone broke into my house and stole it, along with a number of other things. Can’t fault their taste, but…

Wondering what they’re going for these days on the open market (for the insurance). The bass I had was said to be "a prototype built for Mark King". It’s built of brown and white grained wood, with 4 knobs and 4 switches, and I can provide pictures, though nothing close-up.

I’d really appreciate any info about that you (or anyone) have about it. It’s an amazing instrument– hopefully it’ll turn up at a pawnshop somewhere so I can get it back.

I discovered this whilst surfing, I to have a fingerbone fretless bass, it is my favourite guitar. The quality of it is stunning. If you read this Paul, thank you! I remember when you brought it up to my friend’s house in Slinfold, I fell in love with it straight away. I believe it was the model before the Fastback series. Beautiful wood!

              Hi Paul.
I have just found this while trying to find out a bit more about my bass, it’s a 1985 Fingerbone Fastback 4 string fretless so one of yours. Firstly I have to say "well done you!" It’s the finest bass I have ever played, I use it for every gig and every recording, just love it mate. If you ever start making them again I know a lot of pro players who would buy from you, I would buy another one for a start. If you want to see some pictures of the bass and hear it go to http://www.corkyscats.com or http://www.myspace.com/betsanandcorkyscats or if you want to come and play it just get in touch. When we play festivals or gigs where other bass players are around they all come up to me and ask about the bass, I have refused an offer of £3500 for it, just would not sell it for any price. You should make them again.
              All the best.
              Phil.

I got to know Paul quite well in the 80s when he was based the old Manson Guitars site in Crowborough. I can only confirm what has been said about the insruments Paul produced. I have four Fingerbone guitars – a conventional Strat, a Fingerbone Fastback, a more heavily customised Strat with EMGs and a Khaler trem and an explorer. If anyone has a fastback guitar or base with a coloured headstock to match the body, that design was my wife’s idea and my Fastback was the first he tried it on. The bassplayer on one of my bands has two Fastback bases, an active 5 string and a 4 string fretless. A count of 6 between the two of gives an indication of how "revered" these instruments are by many of their players. I have another Fender Strat, a Fender Telecaster and a Gibson Les Paul. What’s the guitar I almost always use live? The Fingerbone Strat with EMGs! Paul wherever you are, the workmanship you put in those years ago is still appreciated by those lucky enough to own your guitars!

I had basses built by Paul when he was in Crowborough, and also when he moved down to Brighton (when I think he shared a workshop with "Matthew"? who was building acoustics) I still have my green fastback bass, and a friend of mine has the last 6 string fastback ever built (by Paul).
I too would like to know what happened to Paul, he built fine instruments and his service was second to none.
I also have to commend the Kent Armstrong pickups.

I have been looking for links for fingerbone guitars for ages!
I bought my fingerbone bass in Apr. 91, english walnut back, quilted maple top, birdseye neck and ebony fretboard.
It had the trapezoid pickups but replaced them with bartolini single coils and had a defret…..sounds much better now (ebony fretboards seems better with a fretless than fretted.)
Had lots of trouble with mine from the off. The truss rod rattled against the fingerboard, so they had to fill the cavity to stop the rattling!
I think the guy i delt with at the time was called Julian.
I think i bought mine at the end of their time as i remember they parted company with one of their builders (who made my neck!) and were going into just making acoustics.
The bass feels good to play, but has a very brittle sound (probably due all the hard woods) The neck is very thin aswell which i think doesn’t help the sound.
Its a good bass for an active rock sound and i wouldn’t part with it (had it too long!!) but it just doesn’t cut it against mi’ fender jazz.

I met Paul Richardson when he happened to be in a guitar store in Brighton I walked into, in 1985. I play 5-string electric guitar (not bass) tune to open-G, a la Keith Richards. I gave him the specs to make me a custom guitar and it was a beautiful job: Tele-like, Mahogany body, tigers-eye veneer, ebony fretboard, rock-maple neck – I think, Bubinga and mother of pearl skull inlays; Schaller pickups (because they have rail pole-pieces to span my 5 strings; and active electronics, which I removed. A really great sounding guitar, and very easy to play. The neck is thin, which plays great, but I’m always concerned it’s going to break – but it hasn’t in 20 years. I wish Paul all the best.

Living near Crowbrough I had a ‘Tele’ Custom built in ’86 which is tabacco sunburst, solid i.e. heavy, mahogany body and the best low profile maple and ebony neck I have ever found (allegedly!) Like Julians it had Schaller hardware and is probably the least Fender sounding Tele out there. I have often thought about a few changes to the pickups over the years but have resisted, the only cange was a coiltap to induce a bit more lift. Loved it when it was completed and still love it now!

When I first dealt with Fingerbone guitars, Paul worked with another guy who eventually went off to set up his own business in Tonbridge. I think that the guitars that were built exclusively by Paul were sometimes superior to those built by others. All of mine were built by Paul when he was working on his own in Crowborough. My bass player’s two Fingerbones were built by Paul and the only problems he’s had have been have been with the electrics but these were just dry joints. I think the issue of getting and keeping luthiers that met Paul’s standards was a part of what made it so difficult for Paul to compete with other handbuilders.

              dave

I think my bass was built when Paul had sold the company to someone else, but they kept the Fingerbone name.
Its good to know that others have fingerbone guitars and enjoy them.

:I have a Fingerbone fastback 5 string fretless built for me in 1990. It has a mahogany body, with a flamed olive ash face, a birds-eye maple neck with ebony fingerboard. The pick-ups are split wound Kent-Armstrongs which give me a stereo output into a custom built stereo amp. This gives me B,E and A through the left channel, and A,D and G through the right channel. Huge sound and very controllable. I wouldn’t part with it for the world.

I also have a Fingerbone. It’s a hybrid…the body and all electrics are Fingerbone, bought from the Fingerbone stand after a show, and the neck is a fretless rosewood boarded thing…probably a Washburn. It is the only fretless I have encountered that has that ’80’s ‘Paul Young’ sound from the off. It plays faultlessly, always has. It may be a mongrel, but it has a really low action, the hand would Fingerbone ‘wood’ pick-ups (which is where the sound comes from) and most important of all, it hangs right. I can’t be doing with Fender basses, the octave is too far round the body, my main bass, a Guild, has its octave where Warwick basses do, in front but a little to the right…The Fingerbone is the same!

                    Hi
I put together a number of Figerbone guitars and bass’s in the early and mid 90’s.
One bass had a fretless neck, it was a Westone neck with the end modified to get rid of the signature Westone shape.
The pickups were originally made by Kent Armstrong (himself) and were cast into a black resin, for this bass I used standard bass pickups in and outer casing of MDF toped off with very thin ply and stained Walnut-ish.
It was a great bass, but being a guitarist not a bassist, I swopped it for a Gordon Smith that I saw in a shop in Southampton around about 1993.
Over a 2-3 year period I probably put together about 10 several had Fingerbone necks but the accuracy of the fret spacing was somewhat suspect, most had Tanglewood neck re shaped to 6 – aside bit like a Sur.
I think all had Kent Armstrong pickups but most were standard shape in an outer trapezoid cover.
I’ve probably got pictures of some of them if anybody is interested.

Yup, And I bought it from that shop in ’93 (In St Mary’s Street) and I still have it!…As you say, it’s a great bass and I bought it entirely on the sound…A perfect classic ’80’s fretless sound. My son knocked it over about 5 years ago and chipped a bit of the lacquer on the body but otherwise it’s still excellent…

                      Nice job!

                      Hi

A couple of weeks ago I saw one of my Fastbacks on Ebay, I knew it was mine as soon as I saw it and discussions confirmed certain points of construction which were mine alone.
I really can’t remember why I traded it in on an Eggle but I just had to have it back, it has been round the country a bit, down to Cornwall then back up the South Coast to Brighton but after about 10 years I’m really pleased to have it back and I won’t want to part with it a second time.

Anybody got my 3 pickup Fastback? H-S-S Kent Armstrongs chrome at bridge single coil size black enclosed humbuckers middle and neck. Wilkinson locking trem 6 aside headstock, rosewood board.
The body is highly figured flame maple/ash? on mahogany.
Sold to Planet Guitars Marlow 6 or 7 years ago if anybody has it and would like to move it on I’d like it back.

Hi, I know this thread is from a long time ago but I came across it whilst googling for info on a Fingerbone I recently bought locally. I don’t know if this thread is still even alive or if you’ll see this Geoff but my guitar matches the description of yours, at least the H-S-S, Wilkinson, highly figured flame maple/ash? on mahogany bits, though there could be a few with the same spec perhaps? I was going to keep it but if it does turn out to be your guitar and you’re still interested in buying it back then feel free to get in touch (though I’m not sure how to do that on here). I have enough guitars to keep me going and only really bought this because it intrigued me and I could see it’s inherent build quality. It’s a great instrument and now I know more about the maker it all adds to the history.

        Andrew Tweedie

I have a Fingerbone ‘Fastback’ that Paul Richardson made for me in the mid eighties. His workshop was in Crowborough. I have a vague recollection that he was making a guitar for John Martin and a bass for Robby Shakespeare.

The quality of the guitar that I have is very good indeed. The neck plays like a dream. The snazzy tappable twin humbucker set up was a bit odd but I’ve fiddled with the set up and got a very sweet out-of-phase tone from it … from which I can switch to a meaty Les Paul tone.

It would be intersting to know where Paul Richardson ended up – design consultancy perhaps – the headstock of the Fastback is a classic (if perhaps frail).

Well it’s good to know that the guitar that I play has not been totally forgotten.

Maybe I should track Paul Richardson down and do a short history of the guitars.

WOW! I posted that comment ages ago and forgot about it, just found the discussion when google searching! It’s been great to see so many other fingerbones are still out there! I own a fingerbone (with Kent armstrong pickups) and an Ibanez s620x! I love the sound of the Ibanez but nothing has ever or can beat the playability of the fingerbone! It plays like a dream, perfect action, fast neck etc! Can’t fault it at all!
Cheers all, been great to read about such a beautiful beast!

        John Cox

I have this Fingerbone guitar that I brought about 20yrs ago originally it was Tobacco Brown but the finish was cracking and falling off.
So I had Bernie Goodfellow refinish it in Teal really nice but where would the serial number be I can’t find it.

This is a early one the previous owner called Mark from Tonbridge had two of them both made by Paul in the crowborough factory.

        Any help would be appreciated.

      2. Fingerbone Explorer
        P J

I’ve recently got hold of a fingerbone explorer shape. It’s model number is 88315 and it’s a plain mahogany wood finish, simple ebony fret board with a nice subtle detail on 12th.
It had EMG pickups – the bridge EMG has practically worn off ! Gold (once) hardware and tuners are schaller Germany.
The case shows only a KLM tag with a NYC address & number but most is gone. Low e tuner area of headstock has been repaired.
This guitar has soul – there is music in it. It’s clearly had a real life on the road and seen the world. If anyone out there knows something about it I’d love to know.

      3. Remembering Fingerbone
        Dominic Whiten

I found this thread whilst googling Fingerbone last night and thought I’d leave a comment. I used to work for Paul Richardson at the old Manson workshop in Jarvis Brook, Crowborough during the mid-eighties. It was a period that I remember with great fondness and I was saddened to learn of Paul’s death – my thoughts go to his family and friends.

Unfortunately my time at fingerbone didn’t end well (I was 18, naive and stupid), and we had a row over an amazing bass he’d been building me. We never met again and it’s been a source of continual regret over the last twenty-something years that things ended as they did. Paul was a thoroughly decent man with a gift for making the most exceptional instruments.

I used to have two Fingerbone’s, a fastback guitar and fleetwood bass. The 6 string was put together by Paul’s number 2 (whose name escapes me – perhaps someone can help?), with a yew body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. It had two of those incredible Kent Armstrong pick-up’ s and the body was finished in a bottle green lacquer. In those days, a lot of the spraying was done on site using cellulose based lacquers. Part of my job would be building up the many, many layers of varnish along with hours of rubbing down between coats. I loved every minute of it!

The Fleetwood bass however, was something out of this world! I remember a trip with Paul to the wood supplier (who was based in a former chapel just around the corner from the old Merrydown cider place in Sussex), during which he bought the craziest selection of wood, most of which went into the bass. So, it had a two-octave through neck made of maple and paduak. The body was two wings of yew faced with Macassar ebony. As if that wasn’t enough, it was finished off with a rosewood fingerboard and burr elm facing to the headstock. It weighed a tonne! As was the norm with Paul’s guitars, it had a pair of KA pickups and was kitted out with black schaller hardware. I went a bit mad and fitted it with an entirely irrelevant collection of phase and coil tap switches but held back from loading active tone controls!

I sold both instruments when I hit tough times financially. I wince when thinking about this – but hope that one day I’ll come across one, or both of them again. For now, I hope they’re being played and treasured by their current owners.

For all of you reading this who are lucky enough to have a fingerbone, cherish it! A piece of Paul lives on in each of them – it’s such a shame that he didn’t receive the recognition his work truly deserves.

Ps – reading everyone’s comments, I think I recognise a few of your guitars… There was the slightly wacky 5 string tele that went to the chap in the states. A stunning piece of work that looked (and sounded), like nothing else! There were a couple of explorer’s we built during my time there – one went to a guy called Mitch (?), who also had an old SG called Betsy. His bass player had a couple of Fleetwood’s as well…. It’d be interesting to know if they still have them and how they’re doing after all these years.

Pps – oh, and if anyone comes across either of my old guitars please let me know. It would be very, very special if I was ever able to be reunited with them.

        1. 5-string Fingerbone guitar
          Julian Shelbourne

I’m the chap in the States who had Paul build me a beautiful 5-string guitar A la Keith Richards in 1985. I have made some changes to it over the years – replaced the Schaller ceramic pickups with The 78 models by Seymour Duncan, and removing the active electronics. I also replaced the top with a nice bit of blue quilted maple after the ebony skull veneer started to lift. A fabulous guitar though. I met Paul completely by accident as I walked into a music shop in Brighton and asked if he knew any luthiers and the guy sitting next to him just happened to be Paul. I’m so sorry to hear of his passing. I was looking him up to see about some custom fret work 🙂

        2. Explorer and Betsy
          Mitch

Hi Dominic – I still have them both and they are doing fine…. I am re-wiring the explorer as we speak! Very sad to hear about Paul, a really lovely man…. many of my friends are slightly confused as to why I have an explorer named Paul. Take care and best regards Mitch

      4. Sad news
        Da'aboth

I have just learned of the passing of Paul, I met him a couple of times. The bass he sold me is the finest instrument I have played! It was, I think, a “one off”; before the Fastback basses. It has 4 strings and is fretless with an ebony board, the neck was birds-eye maple. The resonance from the flame topped maple and the mahogany body is musical.
I always wanted him to make me a companion 5 string, but sadly I had some lean times!
Truly a brilliant designer and Luthier.

What’ll you sell it to me for if your friend isn’t interested in a suitable payment? On eBAY, They sell for between $75 to just over $300 depending on the exact model and the number of people bidding and also condition. Of course, I’d like to know a few more particulars such as exact model and some pictures to determine conditions and any issues. Thanks, Gordon

I have a very old fender precision bass that I bought in 1969. It was old and well used when I bought it. It is in very good condition and in the original hard case. I took it apart and the date on the end of the neck is 1952 I believe. ( a little hard to read) The neck is straight and everything is in nice shape. The finish is old and I think is re finished ?? It’s been under my bed in the case for 30 years..I wonder if anyone is interested? I’d like to sell it..

I am currently looking for a 1980’s Stage series B-5 bass guitar. Any color will do and I am willing to trade, as I have “many” guitars and basses, all in great shape and all Washburn-Guild. 3. I just boyght a G2V but I fear it is too new
        Anonymous

This one does not have the Wonderbar, but a Floydish trem, and I think it is Korean. It may be Japanese. I just am not 100% sure yet. I bid $202 on a charity auction site. If it did not have a hrad shell case and was said to be in “very good” condition I would risk not paying for it, or be really kicking myself in the butt. With the case I paid a fair price. That is the last time I poke $2 at something I am not 100% sure of. I think it will be $250 with shipping. My email is [email protected] I am unsure if I want to sell it, have it sold locally or what exactly. I think the pick ups are active made by EMG high outputs with a 9 volt battery and preamp in the guitar. I should have looked closer at it. I am stunned I only raised the bid by $2 3 days ago and it is mine. I have a feeling I paid $80 too much. The roller wammy is the “WONDER BAR” and is a lot like the Kahler. I own one of Kahler’s NAMM ex demonstartors from 1977-79. It is a Les Paul Std with a stud mount Kahler. IT IS AWESOME! This G2V is strat shaped, but has the HSS pick up array. I can fix that and put any number of pick ups and wiring circuits from passive to full blown MIDI with preamp(s) EQs phasing split coils, etc. I am starting a you tube series on guitar and bass wiring tips starting with a simple tone cap swap out on a “The Duke” Kramer bass tone mod(s) and explanations of how the bass is wired and why a .022 micro Farad cap did not work in it, as well as a low cut treble bleed cap, and wiring them in. I do not want to get fancy and wind up answering 10000 questions so I kept it to a single pick up 1 vol 1 tone and a jack. Now I will only get 5000 questions.

  19. Are you familiar with the Rainsong brand guitar? They’re relatively new, but I’m obviously not looking for a new guitar. I’m looking for the first guitar ever made by founder and CEO of Rainsong guitars John Decker. It is an Indian Rosewood 12-string guitar, that uses synthetic gut strings. It has extensive mother of pearl inlay around the body, on the fret board, with the mother of pearl image of a trunpet playing angel and "JD" on the head. I would love to add this guitar to my collection if anybody knows the whereabouts of the instrument please contact me! Thanks!

: Trying to find out the value for a Acoustic Buck Owens American Red White And Blue guitar. have any suggestions? Please let me know..

I have a Buck Owens American. I’ve had it for several years. What I have found out is that it was made by Harmony in the sixties. Basically they painted a Harmony Rennaisance(?) red, white and Blue. I paid $40 over twenty years ago and there were people who would have paid much more. I have no idea what the value would be today.

I recently purchased a Washburn electric at a local pawn shop.It has had the hell played out of it but still plays and sounds great.I can’t seem to put it down. It’ a double cutaway Les Paul style,2pickups,tone and volume for each pick-up,3-way switch and the through neck. The serial #is80017E.The only picture that I have seen
that even comes close is that of a Washburn Eagle. If any of you experts out there know any thing more please let me know.
    Thanks in advance

I to have the Anjo model W68 and its one of the best guitars I have.I am told that the one I have is over 50 years old maybe more, but I have trouble finding out more about it,so if anyone knows anything e-mail me.Great for open tunings and slide, its my favourite.

Im not sure about the model you have,is it acoustic or electric?.The one I have, was purchased in White Rock British Columbia,Canada in 1980 and is a fullbody model aprox.$200.00 cdn.It has a built in pickup that sounds OK.This guitar sits on a wall in a recording studio that I work at,but it doesnt get used anymore because of its poor quality. Its done a lot of traveling and jammin. If it could only speak the stories it would tell.Im not to sure if its USA or CDN. made. Good luck.

      Hey Bud,

I owned an Old Craftsman electric back in 1962.

      I was 12 years old then.I am 60 now.

Seem the pick-ups stop working so I took the guitar apart to see what was the matter.

Wound up throwing it in the trash!

It was really hard to play.

Like to have ripped my fingers to shreds ever time I played it.

But back then I was to young to know about having a guitar set up!

Ya know like lowering the strings, ect.

      Wish I had it now.

It was my first guitar to ever own!

      Oh well!

I have an original “Ventures Mosrite of California” guitar that I have owned for 40 or 41 years.

      Piece & Pick-On!

      God Bless!

      Bob!

: has anyone ever heard of a guitar or guitar company called Old Craftsman? i have an old openface electric guitar with the name of Old Craftsman on it. i can’t find any information on it and have no clue about where it came from. if anyone has any info. i’d be much obliged.

I got one from my folks back in the mid to late 60’s. It’s a solid body electric with a Fender style tuning head. It was used when I got it so I have no idea how old it is. Mine isn’t playable at this time. I’m planning on fixing it. If anyone gets anymore info let me know. It would be interesting to see if there is any value there.

I am 60 now. I don’t think it would be worth a lot of money per say.
Just knowing it’s an Old Guitar is it’s price.
But any guitar is only worth as much as you are willing to pay for it, or just how bad you want it!

My first guitar was an Old Craftsman that I got for Christmas back in the mid 1950’s. I’m pretty sure it came from Spiegels. It was the f-hole archtop and it, too, came with a pick, an instruction book, and that braided strap with the tassel. As I recall, mine was a darker sunburst model. I don’t remember if it had a case.

I played the honky tonks, bars and clubs around the South West for many years.
In the 50s when money was tight I ordered a Old Craftsman acoustic flat top Guitar from Speigel Catalog. In was called the Auditorium size. I received it by mail. I think it cost $89.00. what a bargain.
I don’t think Speigle Stores sell them any more.
Once in a thousand or so you can find a cheap guitar that will put a Martin or Gipson to shame sound wise, this was one that met that quality. I played it on stage fo years until I foolishly left it in the trunk of the car, you know the rest.
I wonder who still sells them.
            Would like to have one.

            Hey Bud,

I owned an Old Craftsman electric back in 1962.

I was 12 years old then.

Seems the pick-ups stop working so I took the guitar apart to see what was the matter.

            God Bless!

            Bob!

Hi. I’d like to at least see pictures of the guitar you have. I’ve only seen ONE. Some years ago, a friend of mine had one. NICE ax.

          Please drop me a line.

Stay safe, and may God bless.

          Peace.

            Dan,
My father had an “Old Kraftsman” electric when I was small (about 1964). My parents took a picture of me hold the guitar when I was about 3 or 4.
I didnt know at that time that I was holding something that would be with me still today. I keep it in a case and sometimes pull it out to just mess around with.

It is truly wonderful to see all the history that surrounds these guitars.

i have an old Craftsman guitar that was made probably back in the 60s. It was my ex father-in-law’s rather. Is Daddy bought it for me and he was about fifteen or so before he went to the war for sure. that he lost his arm in a drilling accident and I was supposed to have it fixed for him before that happened but since I never did he said why you can go ahead and keep the guitar recently I’ve rewind the pick up which I found it quite difficult if you don’t know what you’re doing . I’m having trouble with now is just finding the original setup for the volume and tone knob that I don’t know what size capacitor it was because it was a paper and wrapped oil type that had long since lost its wording on the side wore off other than that it’s still in good shape body pretty good the scarf joint at the top of neck that got cracked though because my wife got mad at me one time and decided she’s going to try and stump on all my guitars which I stopped Midway of that one other than that it was a pretty good sounding guitar

I didn’t know Old Craftsman made a solid body electric. Back in ’67 when I was 15, my daddy bought me an Old Craftsman hollow body electric from a pawn shop. He had a little 3 tube amp with an 8″ speaker that I played it through and that combo had a really sweet sound. Played it in a garage band. The guy who played lead had a turquoise Hagstrom, also a sweet sounding guitar. It would be interesting to know a little history of the Old Craftsman brand.
I went to a guitar show in Spartanburg, SC, in 2010 and was surprised to find 3 Old Craftsman guitars exactly like mine.I guess some old guitars never die, they just end up in guitar shows.

: wanna buy a sweet guitar?

Here’s a general question for anyone out there. How many Thunderbolts have you ever seen that have a black finish that appears to be very fine metalflake? In the time I’ve owned mine I’ve never run across another Tbolt of any color allthough ocation says they were put out in three colors. I can only guess that what they call black pearl is what the finish is on mine. I am looking to sell it, I boght it in a music store called Boes strings located in Fredrick Maryland. It’s condition is excellent. I beleive I bought it roughly 10-12 years ago and I’ve only played it probably 30 hours sice I purchased it new. I figured that it was rare then it sure wasn’t going to see anything in the way of abuse or neglect. As I said it’s in excellent condition.I payed 850 new and the value is only going to go up in time any offers out there?

I have an Ovation Thunderbolt guitar with a very rare hand painted top. Only about 50 made. Blue Dragon Skin, painted and signed by an artist named O’connor, and dated "89". Acording to Ovation the tops were given to him and he hand painted them on his boat.
            I’d like to sell it.

I have seen one like it for sale recently. It is from a shop in Florida. Looks like they want $650, is this yours? I have always wanted a Thunderbolt to add to my Ovation collection, but not sure about the artist’s dragon finish.
