I need to paint my guitar...nothing fancy, just a color

does anyone know how to go about painting or putting a finish on a self assembled fender body guitar? The one person in my town who might know says that you cannot do it in the winter because the finish will not hold...I need to see if there is another way to paint a guitar white and make it look good in the winter.
