Your DY74 would be a 1978 model. Called the Wellington Rosewood model, it has a solid spruce top, with laminated rosewood back and sides. Should have ebony fingerboard and bridge. Mahogany neck. Chrome Grover tuners. Retail list price new approx $549

I have a 1984 K. Yairi AR381 (signed by Kazuo Yairi) that I bought new in 1986. I believe I paid $400-$500 for it at that time. It is a shallow bodied (about 3.5" deep) electric(passive)/acoustic dreadnought cutaway. It has an ebony fretboard with abalone inlays, a metallic blue sunburst finish and a lacquered black back/neck. It has an arched back but is a flat top. I am unable to tell what type of wood it is made of because of the finish. It is a very unique beauty that has wonderful sound and action. I have never been able to find any mention of it anywhere. It is in very good condition. Has anyone ever heard of this model? Does any one have any idea of its current value?

I’ve got a 1976 Yairi Alvarez acoustic 6-string, model 5080 that I’ve owned since 1979 although believe it or not its been in my son’s closet for a very long time. My understanding is it’s basically a copy of a Martin D-41 but I’m looking to get a sense of street/insurance value. Its in excellent shape and plays well but the guy I bought it from way back then replaced the original tuners with a set of Grovers. The Grovers are a bit worn cosmetically but still work fine. I contacted Alvarez and they say the 5080 listed for $500 in ’76 but couldn’t give me a resale value and I found a guy who sold a 1970 model 5080 for over $1100 but I have no idea where the value would go from there.

Last question would be… anyone know anyone who sells vintage parts? I’d like to find a circa ’76 set of original machines. THANKS!

This model should be an Alvarez by Kazuo Yairi~ these were made prior to 1974-75 when they changed the model numbers and brand name around (from Alvarez logo to AY). Ask for more info

  4. Learning About Yairi Guitars
    Lee Holbrook

I am a new fan of Yairi guitars. I just recently bought two: a DY 71 and a DY 84. I love these guitars. They play better and sound better than my Gibson Song Writer Deluxe. What is the process for the Yairi Company to name their guitars, i.e., 70, 71, 84, 85, etc.? I have also heard that some Yairi guitars are no longer made in Japan, but made in Korea or China? Is this true? If so, what year did this happen and on what models. What year did K. Yairi pass away? Does this mean his signature on previous guitars make them more valuable?
I am sorry for all these questions, I am just really interested in learning more about these fabulous guitars.
    Thanks,
    Lee

      Hello Lee,

You certainly do have lots of questions~ I’ll answer a few here.

First, Kazuo Yairi is very much alive and well. It was Sadao Yairi that passed away, sometime in the 1990’s I believe. ALL AY or Kazuo Yairi guitars are made in Japan at the Yairi Factory. There are Alvarez models that are or have been made in Korea, China or Japan.

In fact the red X (or Almost Perfect or USED) all mean it’s a blem or seconds model. These are sold at large discounts and NO warranty for that reason.

I also have one of these I bought at Melody Shop in Dallas back in 1975. I thing it was about a $200.00 guitar then. It is in very good condition still and has been through many beergarden jam sessions and lots of fun times. It is still my go to insturment and sounds better than a new Takamine acoustic electric I was given a few years ago. The neck is a great fit in my hand and it stays tuned for a long time. Don’t know what the value is today, but I would not sell it for less than a grand. It’s that good!

These "appraisals" are way too high for these models~ The acoustic Bluebook sets the value much lower (for excellent and average condition) on DY59.. I paid under $400 for mine. The GF250 is 4 up from the bottom of the line, lowest GF80 highest GF500. Very similar to the 5017 AY model, which in excellent condition will normally sell for around $500.

Not sure if you’ve found the information you were looking for yet, but I was in a small "mom and pop" guitar shop in my area today, seriously thinking of purchasing the very guitar you are asking about. I trust the owner completely, and he gave me a little bit of information about the guitar. You do have one of the more common shapes, the "european jumbo", and they made it from 1988-1991, I think. But anyway, the value of the guitar is somewhere between $500.00 and $750.00, depending on the condition. The one I was playing today, is in near mint condition, with only a few minor surface scratches on the back, and it was priced at $695.00. I hope this helps, and I hope he’s not selling it! It’s hard to find a guitar with pecan back and sides these days. You just can’t match the midrange complexity if this guitar. If he does want to sell it, write me back, and I may buy it from you. Good luck and happy playing to you both.

        Hello,

This model had a retail price in 1989 of $649 and was called the CANYON CREEK JUMBO. Just a note, there are at least TWO other DY53 Alvarez Yairi models, so it could get confusing if you hadn’t mentioned it having the Pecan back.

Mine says it was made in ’90. I play professionally, and my WY-1 has been great for these 24 years. I moved the output to the strap end as having the cord come out the bottom was a problem playing while sitting. I also put longer wire on the battery connections. My only problem with this guitar is having to take the strings off to access the battery. It plays like a dream, and encourages improvisation.

      I own a 5053. I think I got mine around 71-72.
I think the sides might be brazilian rosewood, but
I am not sure. I installed a set of Grover tuners on it about 1973. It’s a good guitar, the action is a little high. The adjustable height bridge is not ideal. I want to replace with a solid one piece bridge. This guitar satisfies my need for a dreadnaught. I would like to find more info about it as well.

I have a very nice Alvarez 5053 for sale, manuf. date 21-11-74. I bought it used in the late 70’s and played in some in that era, so I am the only owner for the last 40 years. I have not played it much at all since and it is in very fine condition. It has a 3-piece rosewood/flame maple back. No cracks or other problems noted. The bridge is coming up slightly, but that is the only thing I noticed. I would be happy to send pictures if you are interested. I have seen this guitar sell for between $300 and $1200 online, but most are between $500-$650. Is it something you are interested in?

The number on the heelblock is 0851.
Can someone tell me what year it is?
It is in great shape with original case and yes it’s for sale.

I have a CBS Masterworks Yairi MWG Y1040 , handmade, cypress and rosewood flamenco guitar made for Charlie Byrd to play with his initials in mother of pearl on the neck of the guitar. Just wondered if anyone could know the value? I bought it from Richard Harrison (his arranger) at the Charlie Byrd music house in maryland in the early ’70’s when he was selling some instruments.

This is a Sadao Yairi model, not Kazuo~ without seeing it I can’t be sure, but most likely it has a spruce top and mahogany back and sides.

For you from Japan and sorry with my bad English.
      54.9.07 means Sep.7.1979.
One day before, when I visited Mr.Yairi’s factory with my family suddenly with no appointments, luckily Mr.Yairi was there on that day. And he guided us with his frank talking, and he made a nice cup of coffee for each of us. He always keep his manners or behaviors even if someone beside him is a rich person or not, beautiful or ugly, young or old, famous or not, welknown person or stranger.
Good luck with your Alvarez Yairi !

      1. Vintage K. Yairi guitar bought in the 60's (Y-100) value?
        Kat

I bought a K. Yairi guitar back in the mid60’s in northern California from a music store in San Leandro. On the inside label it states that it is an international prize winning classical guitar hand-crafted by K. Yairi and it gives a model number of Y-100. Stamped or burned into a block of wood inside the guitar are the numbers 49 337. It has a few minor scratches on the outside but is in incredible condition otherwise. And also has a beautiful, mellow sound for an acoustic classical guitar. It did not come with a case and I have been keeping it stored in a cedar closet in a soft gig bag for years. Can anyone tell me what the value would be today in the open market if I should want to sell it? I am pretty sure I bought it in 1965 or 1966.

My mother just gave me my old high school guitar, an Alvarez Kazuo Yairi dreadnought model DY 57, serial 6317. I still play and perform. I remember when we bought it, brand new. I now play a Mossman that I bought new in 1984. I’m wondering how much the Alvarez is worth. It’s in mint condition.

      3. Hi, I have a 1991 Alvarez Yairi guitar DY-45. The paperwork says it was completed on 6/91 Inside it has the serial number and it is signed Kazuo Yairi. Also, it’s in excellant condition. Does anyone have any idea what its worth?
        Thanks

Hi Valerie. Sorry that this response is so late to your questions. An email from Russia concerning this guitar that I still have has prompted me to look at where it had been listed previously! I’ve lost track truthfully! Anyway, woods are: solid one piece spruce top, mahogany neck and strip/inlay on back, dark indian rosewood back and sides, ebony saddle-fretboard-headstock surface, plus mother of pearl and ‘ivory’ details. Gold tuners. Has passsive piezio inner mic (no controls). Great seasoned sound…really sings! IF you end up getting this message, send me an email and I can send photos if you like.
