  1. Looking at a DY75DCB 1991
    Shawn M.

I’m looking into buying a 1991 Alvarez by Yairi DY75DCB serial # 47117 with 0303-033 at the base of the neck. It is in pretty good shape, but not perfect. I was wondering what it is worth, so I know if I’m getting a fair deal. Thanks for any help.

I’m not sure what you have, because if it is a classical model the number wouldn’t include a DY (which stands for Dreadnought Yairi).. he did make a Y 70 model, I know because I have one.

: I bought my K.Yairi DY 70 L (classical model made in 1977) in late 70´s in Turku, Finland. Haven´t played this guitar for many years and now having a plan to adjust it by some pro. Beautiful and well built instrument, still like new, but strings are a little bit too high and neck is not precise (needs adjustment). Has any body experience or further information about this model ?

Hello. I’ve got a DY 46 that I picked up at a pawn shop about 5 months ago. I’m trying to find out any history on it as its apparently not a very popular model. As much as I know, it is about a 1981.. Thanks.

      1. yairi dy 46
        hawk

i was lucky to find a (new)1980 alvarez yairi dy 46 at a columbia ,Sc. guitar show..it is an amazing guitar!!!! i have martins, gibsons, and several others, but nothing compares to the full sound of this yairi…the finish and handmade qualities are evident which i think adds to the awesomeness of this guitar….replaced the pins with bone ones and some new martin 12’s bluegrass strings and it BOOMS !!!! can’t say enough….the rest are put away in the cases..lol.

      2. I have one of these. Bought it in spring of 79 I think. I love this guitar. It is beautiful, and carries a wonderfully full sound. Not sure why it wouldn’t be popular. There were two in stock at the time. One with a dull finish, that was even more beautiful, and the one I got with a shiny finish, but which just had a bit better sound on the low end. I paid $400 for it at the time, no idea what they go for now.

I have an unusual Alarez Yairi that I bought in 1981. I was told by the dealer and later confirmed with St Louis Music that it was built as a display piece for the 1977 Namm show. It’s model YM600G. It’s actually got a ROSEWOOD top and tons and tons of abalone inlay. I understand that it’s featured in a 77 or 78 Yairi catalog, but I’ve never been able to lay my hands on one. Does anybody out there have a catalog of that vintage or possibly know anything about this? I can post photos if that would help. Thanks.

    1. Re: unusual old Yairi
      yairi_luvr

These were made as K. Yairi’s, not Alvarez Yairi. They do show up in older K. Yairi catalogs, and are all laminate models.

Probably a YW600G, y for yairi and w for western style (dreadnought). The YW designation was for markets outside the US market. The DY in the US market was for Dreadnought/Yairi

    3. Re: unusual old Yairi
      Chip Owens

By the way, it does sound and play EXACTLY the way you’d expect a guitar with a rosewood top to sound and play. This guitar had a slotted headstock and "ALVAREZ" done in inlay on the headstock rather than the traditional A Y logo.
      I also have a double neck DY87.

Hi, I have a 12 string. Its a pretty guitar, I played it for years but not much recently. Not sure how much in demand they are, or what it would be worth. I’ve been told by guitar stores that its valuable, but haven’t pursued it. Anyone able to give a price range? I still have all its original paperwork, stating that the guitar was completed Dec. 26, 1975. It probably needs some upkeep, polished, new strings, and such.

  7. Re: Alvarez Yairi DY50 limited edition Kazuo
    T Yancy

The DY-50 was a fantastic guitar. It was a gorgeous instrument with amazing playability and a piano-like tone that was extremely rich. It was released in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the company and came with a commemorative gold-toned belt buckle (which I still have somewhere still sealed in plastic – and would be willing to sell to the right buyer).

The lightly stained top was of the most uniform, narrow grained spruce I have ever seen and the amazingly beautiful knurled mahogany back sides, with their deep walnut coloration, made the instrument stand out in a crowd. Obviously, the wood pattern varied between guitars, with some falling in the "attractive" range and others being tuly stunning. They were a limited production. I can’t remember how many but it was a low run. My original DY-50 (see below) had a serial number in the low thirties (38, if I recall correctly).

I later bought a Martin D-28 but compared with the DY50, the D-28 sounds like it came from Sears. The difference really was that great. Now that the Martin has aged ten years it still can’t come even close.

Hit an open A on the DY-50 and there was so much richness and sustain that you could have sampled it to create a Steinway patch. It was a fantastic lead and blues instrument, its frets were just the right size for serious grinding, it was great with downtunings, and it sounded particularly good with steel finger picks. Once, when searching for an earthy tone for a bluegrass number, I swapped the low E string for a high E and set it to a modified banjo tuning. It sounded really, really good.

I owned this masterpiece of an instrument from 1979 until 1992, during which time I spent five years carting it around Europe and Africa. When shipping it back to the states, it ended up in a crate in a non-climate controlled environment, resulting in a cracked bridge due to freezing. This annihilated its superior tone. I should have taken it to Charlie’s Guitars in Dallas and replaced the bridge but I didn’t do this, due to a combination of being broke and being an idiot. I later wrecked some tendons in a recording session had to sell it along with all my other gear but. I still miss it after 17 years.

The Alvarez-Yairi brand is virtually unheard of by most guitarists these days and, if anything, has been undermined by the forgettable quality of their budget-oriented Alvarez brand. I encourage everyone to visit http://www.yairiguitar.com and take a look. Unfortunately, the site doesn’t do a good job of showing these guitars in all their glory and I can’t directly vouch for their current quality, although little seems to have changed in their attention to craftsmanship. The DY-50 is and always shall be close to my heart. What a fantastic instrument!

I purchased S/N: 619/900 of the DY-50 in December 1979 for less than $600. This month marks 30 years of owning this fine guitar. It is indeed Cedar top with Burled Mahogany back and sides.I must say that mine has the best looking back of the other 3 DY-50s I’ve seen over the years.

Quite honestly, I really don’t think this guitar matured until the past 5 years. Many thanks to D’Addario for their EXP strings. These strings saved this guitar from a corner in my closet.

What can I say…30 years of great sound, still with the factory setup. Compliments from every player that has played this guitar. Palm mutes so sweet…

My only complaints about this guitar are, wish it had a pickup and I wish the bass was a little better.

It’s hard to beleive that the DY-50s don’t seem to have a lot of value left on the market. There is absolutely no way I’d sell this guitar for less than $2K. Unfortunately no one would probably pay more than $500-$600 for it. Other than that, God willing I’ll still be playing this guitar for many years to come.

The DY50 Commemorative made in 1979, had a solid Cedar top, with Burled Mahogany back and sides (laminates). It was a LE model with 900 being made. I also have the 1979 gold tone belt buckle.

By popular demand Kazuo reissued this model as the DY51, same guitar just not the commemorative one.

        1. Re: My earlier comment praising my DY-50
          Anonymous

I happened to stumble upon a DY-50 on eBay and grabbed it. I sold my original in 1992 after an over-athletic studio session (too many takes of a shred) that wrecked my tendons (now, if I could ever come across my ’63/’54 hybrid that I’d had for 15 years, I’d buy it back – but that was before 30% of the population got into vintage).

I used my DY-50 for acoustic blues and it had both a great tone and the ability to handle serious digging in. I also used it for a fair amount of downtuned Kottke-style stuff. I currently have a 16-year-old D-28, which I bought when it was around a year old. I have found that unless I used heavier strings than I like, the life goes out of the guitar when I am fretting around halfway up the neck and have fallen back to playing it only in a modified Stills EB tuning so that the resonance will support the sound when up the neck. String life is also down to around a week before it loses personality. (On the other hand, it smells to great that I take a whiff nearly every time I pull it out of the case, but that’s not saying much.) The Martin also has the typical thin frets, which make it a lot less blues-friendly.

The replacement DY-50 that I just picked up has all the life that I remember from before. It has a couple of dings and strum marks on the finish (from some buffoon who obviously had no idea what a nice guitar he was playing) but otherwise is in great condition and plays great.

My DY 50 was stolen in the 80’s. It was perfect for me so I’m looking for a guitar with similar qualities. The sound was outstanding! I am a female with small hands, the neck and action were surprisingly easy. Is there another Yairi with these attributes. I don’t want to spend more than $500. I would also consider a Baby Taylor, Guild, or a Takamine and am open to any suggestions. I seldom check my e-mail so a text message would work better. 360-591-4848 Thanks!

I know your post was a while back, but……I have never played a DY 50, so I don’t know how suitable of a replacement this would be, but based on your price range and requirements, I recommend an Alvarez MDA66shb. I love the one that I have, it is very playable, sounds great, and is a looker! I had one and my neighbor came over, tried it and , after 3-4 minutes of playing it pulled cash out of his pocked and offered me $100 more than I paid for it. I accepted, bought another one and we are both tremendously happy! It also comes with a very nice wood case, classy looking.

        4. i have the #057 i bought it in 1978 new in pensacola fl. it has some nicks and dings but thats what makes it real.it has been all over the usa and eastern europe.it has the original case that came with it (or i brought for it) everything on it is original. i have put a bridge pick up in because i need the ease of ampalcation.not that i would sell it but i would like to know what it is worth.and yes i also have the belt buckle.any way if someone has an ideal of its worth please post it. thanks

  8. Alvarez 5009 Artist series.
    Charles Berlow

    Hi.
About 6 months ago I bought an Alvarez 5009 classical guitar.
The 5009s are now called the Professional Series. My 5009 is called the Artist series. I saw Professional 5009 advertised as a 1997 guitar with a 90xxx serial number. Mine has a 49xxx serial number, thus I assume much older. Any Ideas of the age?
    Thanks, Charlie

Why are these models so difficult to find info on? I read they were for export from Japan not to the US but possibly to Australia/Canada?

        Conrad

I have a 1984 signed K.Yairi AR333, complete with a signature guitar case. It has satin finish and has a beautiful, crisp sound. I purchased it in Canada from a friend about 30 years ago. And I only paid $200 for it! I feel your frustration at not being able to find information on the AR models. The more I search and the more I keep coming up empty on attempts to find information about this guitar, the more I can’t help feeling that I have something rare and valuable in my hands. I just took it to a luthier yesterday to have some adjustment done on it, and he was amazed. He is an Alvarez-Yairi dealer and has never seen anything like it.

Since the Alvarez MB has been down since March , I’ve been getting a lot of e-mails from those hoping to find information on their guitars~ I spoke with several people at Alvarez and it doesn’t look like the board will be up and running any time soon (if ever)!

So, I started a Yahoo Group in the hopes that those that used the old board, will have a place to continue to ask questions and share info on their guitars with others.

        Anonymous

I have a K Yairi classical guitar AR570, handcrafted 1981, signed, cedar top, rosewood back and sides, solid neck with ebony strip, ebony fret board. Excellent condition, well-played. I purchased this guitar in 1983 in B C Canada. Does anyone know the market value (2019) of this guitar in Canada?

        Anonymous

I am looking to purchase the above noted guitar from a person I have never met before. I had not heard of these guitars before so I am wondering what it is worth. It is in good shape and sounds great. it is an electric acoustic. Anyone out there have any idea what it might be worth. The owner says it is signed by Yairi

      3. K. Yairi AR-382 Signed
        Bruno Madsen

I’ve had this model since 1984 when it was produced. I’ve owned a lot of guitars and this is still the nicest acoustic/electric I’ve ever owned. Great action, nice cutaway, and the pickup is excellent. No downside to this guitar whatsoever.. Not looking to sell, just confirming that some of them are still out here. Played it for over 30 years and hardly a scratch on it. Treat it like a baby…

Sorry to bother you. Can you tell me how much the AR- 382 cost you when you bought it in 1984 and possibly how much it is worth today ?
I recently bought a AR-382 and I’m trying to find out if I got suckered or not. I can’t find anything online about this guitar. Again , sorry to bother you and thanks.. Jim

      4. K. Yairi AR570 classical
        blackp

I have a beautiful, though beat-up, AR570 classical guitar, hand-crafted in 1983 and signed by K. Yairi. This surfaced in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada a couple of years ago and I was lucky enough to purchase it for $555. It has a cedar top (cracked a bit, but repaired); Brazilian rosewood back and sides (I think that at least the back is solid,) as well as bridge, and headstock veneer; a one piece (no splices,) quarter-sawn mahogany neck with an ebony reinforcing strip; ebony fretboard. As you might expect, it has a rich, vibrant tone that makes $3000 Ramirez models sound like plywood by comparison.

I have a 1983 AR 570 also signed by Mr. Yairi.
Beautiful Cedar top with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, with Ebony fretboard.
The guitar is an exact copy of an A-1.
It sounds like the exact guitar described above.
No cracks or repairs on this one.
I would like to sell it.
If interested, please let me know as it will go up on ebay soon.
          Best Regards,

We have two AR-516’s and have found the same problem — no information anywhere on them. We have had them since around 1984 and love them dearly. We live in Canada and bought them new in Vancouver on Hastings Street from a store that no longer exists.

        1. I have the same problem getting information. It’s an AR-516 (1986), purchased from a store in Calgary that’s long gone. Shortly after I purchased a Yairi flamenco in 1992, I heard Yairi stopped selling in Canada because of a very poor exchange rate.

          1. AR 516
            Chris Ryan

Yes, also, around that time I was told by the sales clerk that we bought ours from that Yairi was no longer selling direct to North America, because of a deal with Alvarez. The ones we got were in transit at the time the deal was inked, allowing us to get them for only $250 each! A steal at 10 times that price, I’d say.

The tone and volume are outstanding and they are very playable instruments. From what I can see, they are much like today’s Alvarez CY116, but offer a 664 mm scale length instead of the CY116’s 650mm. We will never sell ours!

I tried writing to the K. Yairi company for more information, but have heard nothing in reply. That was about 2 months ago.

  9. K.Yairi guitar model AR373E
    Dano

I was wondering how many of this model were made. I bought mine in 1985 and still have it and will always have it. I paid $500.00 and worth every penny. I only saw one identical to mine in a Irish pub, the gentleman told me to keep it since it had triple in price. For me it’s not the price that matter’s it’s the quality and sound that I enjoy. Cheers!

I also own a 5047, and mine is NOT laminate — you can see the rosewood pattern is the same on the inside and outside of the back, which isn’t true of a laminate back. Mine has an awesome tiger stripe pattern that is just gorgeous. Mine is a 1975 model, so perhaps the older ones are more valuable. I paid 350 for mine, and consider it a steal bec it is a 000 size (also called concert model by other manufacturers.) Mine is essentially an exact copy of Martin’s Eric Clapton model (though it predates same by many years).

*I have a Guitar as described above, it is in nice condition and has the letters ‘D’ ‘E’ in gold letters on the main body just below the sound hole, and about 2″ high. The Guitar was hand made in Japan according to the label, and the letters
look the same as other gold embelishments on the Guitar that I feel suggests it may have been made for the person with these initials. I may sell and would also be interested to know its value. I would be greatful for any information from anyone with any advice or information on the Guitar.

These are all laminate models..top Spruce, back and sides Rosewood depending on the year made, older models may be worth a little more, or less. Usually sell for less than $175 on EBay, just depends on who is looking at the time. Not bad considering they had a MSRP in 1980 of $220.

I can tell you it is an all laminate model, spruce top, Flame grain Rosewood back and sides. Have seen them for sale at silly prices that you’d expect to see for an Alvarez Yairi model, and incorrect specs listed (solid AAA tops, Brazilian back and sides, etc.)~

: I own a Model DY74 – 1990 with Serial # 44524, and my question is how much is this guitar worth at this time and will increase much in the coming years ?

It has a lot to do with the condition of the guitar, past repairs, needed repairs, cracks, dents, dings, etc. Also the newer version isn’t as popular as the original, so would probably bring in a little less.

If in excellent condition, around $500 to $600, average condition, $350 to $425.

These guitars are more popular now than 10 years ago, but there’s no way to know if it will increase or decrease in the future.

It depends on what year, and the serial number isn’t much help, if you haven’t already bought it and can post the numbers found on the heelblock (inside at base of neck) I can give you more info.

The original DY77 is from the 1970’s.. later versions are not worth as much~ but, they should be marked DY77N or DY77NEQ.

$900 IS a bit on the high side, and certainly NOT a deal~ and unless it’s in MINT condition I’d wait on another one.

She’s been with me from the day she was born. It is signed by Yairi and made in Japan without a scratch, I was wondering she’s worth anything. NOT TRYING TO SELL!!! Couldn’t part with her, I bought her when I was 21 in 1983 and she goes with me everywhere. I am poor due to living on disablilty after working 23 years. But I was curious and bored today so I was playing and looked at the serial number to cover for insurance when I noticed it was signed and was wondering how much I should insurance to put on her along with the rest of things. She maks the most beautiful sound I have EVER heard. I went on line having no idea what a Yairi was and found this note.

      Sincerely,

After looking through half these posts (most without an answer) I thought I’d try to answer a few~ but, it would be much easier if anyone wanting info on their Yairi’s (or Alvarez Yairi, etc.) Ask your question at the link below. At least that way I’ll know the person will GET the response (since most of these are very old) and I’ll get notified via e-mail of new questions, as they come in. That way I don’t have to spend a lot of time looking through the posts here.

        Mario Thiel

        Dear Yairi- Team,

my name is Mario Thiel, I’am living in Germany. For a few weeks I’am a proud owner of a brand new Yairi-DY 62 C (2001) – guitar. It`s a wonderful instrument, I love it. The processing-quality and the sound are magnificent. The pure sound (without the pickup) is absolutely perfect.

And now my question/my problem: The sound of the built in pickup (Yairi 500 T) is not perfect. It`s too hard, not soft….not naturelly… I’am am musican in germany. I often play live on stage. I need a perfect pickup-system, to him sounded of this wonderful instrument also does justice. I have read from Alvarez – T600 MK II. I can combine the sound of the piezo-pickup with that of a microphone.

It`s possible to exchanged the pickup ? Can I insert in my guitar the pickup with the Alvarez Mikrophone ? Does this make sense, would this be a sound improvement ?
Can you help me, that to procure this Alvarez T 600 MK II – System with the Mikrophone ? A high price is o.k. for me.

Many thanks in advance and the best greetings from germany.

      2. Alvarez guitar- Signature Edition
        anita k kastorff

        Hello,

Thank you very much for offering to answer some questions.
I bought an Alvarez Acoustic Signature Edition in 1985 and am the original owner. The whole body is made of Rosewood and has turned an orange like color over the years. This wood is inside and out and has no lamination. It has abalone inlays and solid abalone tuning keys. It has the signature on the bottom. It is a DY 61 model and the serial number is 58340.
When I bought it, the salesman told me the guitar had a solid top and would one day be a collector’s item. I hated it when I first bought it because it had a tinny sound but that sound is gone and now it has a lovely rich sound. I have not seen this particular guitar any where and was wondering what it might be valued at these day? I paid a hefty $550.00 for it in 1985 in Mobile, Alabama. I have played it all over the south in nightclubs, churches, tent revivals and beach bon fires. I’ve used it to write over a hundred songs. I gave it to my son who was a great guitarist and took it back after his suicide. This guitar has seen some things and played some songs.
Thanx for taking time with me.
        Regards, AK

Hey, I have a K. Yairi guitar. I know some stuff about it but I am interested in how much one of these guitars are worth. I wouldn’t want to sell it but, it would be nice to know how much my baby is worth. If you know anything about this guitar please help me out!! Thanks a lot! 😀

Hi, is this guitar still for sale?

: This was the flagship of Kazuo Yairi’s classical guitar line in the ’80s as shown on a page of a catalogue of which a picture can be provided. Materials: cedar top, brazilian rosewood back/sides; scale: 65 cm; neck: ebony with ebony piece going through it for stabilisation; condition: very good, only one 2 cm long scratch on the top and a few small ones on the back; the neck is totally straight (very easy playability) and has new frets with a zero fret; sound: amoung the most powerful guitars I ever played – there are many guitars with a strong bass, but this one keeps its level up to the high registers. Price and Photos can be provided on request – please understand that I will ship only within Europe.
