I have an old Kay archtop with a wood mounted, speed-bump type pickup, and controls on upper bout made of faux-tortoise bakelite. A nice player & electrics work perfect. Serial is K34-4XXX. There is also a date inside in pencil, 1947. Is this really a 1947 Kay?

I just got a classical guitar from my father-in-law that says Model No. CL 465. He said he has had it for over twenty years and it was old when he bought it. I am looking for more info as well. If I find anything I will post it here. Mine has the Star of David on the plate that holds the tuning pegs. Does yours?

I bought this new at a music store in Ravenna, OH in 1969. It was $25 and for the most part has been sitting in my closets all this time because it was to time consuming for me to take the time to learn how to play it. I’m now 65 with a whole host of medical issues behind me and not he but free time a head of me. So I’ve got several decent guitars and a nice little Blue Jr tube amp I’m pleased with. And I started taking lessons from a very patient teacher. I’m 65 and can’t remember last week !!! He is good. If nothing else it’s good therapy to talk about the old times.
Any way I have this Kay CL 465. Nylon string classical in pretty good condition. Paid $25 new in 1969. Never really was able to find out anything about it. The back and sides are all colored wood. Very light material. Wide neck. Hated when I bought it love it now. Plays and sounds great. No serial numbers to be found. Haven’t been able to find any info on it all these years. Doubt it’s worth much. Anyone know anything on it. Can you put pics on this website
Hi, I have a blue double pickup bass with the gibson EB style solid body, and double pickguards, one of which is elevated and has a flower-like decoration. Made in Japan. I’m assuming late 60’s, probably early 70’s? Any info appreciated.
I have a guitar that was totally stripped of its finish. It has alternating one/ two dot pattern on a rosewood fingerboard like Kay guitars, spruce top with maple veneer sides and back, rosewood veneer headstock, but this is a cutaway model. White binding on top, back, fingerboard and sound hole. serial # L9436 6118…..any info would be very helpful. Thank you!!!!!
I have an old Kay guitar that belonged to my grandmother I know that it is over 50 years and I can see the serial number on the inside. I was told it was a jazz guitar but not sure. the number inside is 13957 6858 if you know anything please let me know!
Thanks, Autumn

I have a Kay Guitar with k12 0112 stamped inside. I’m just learning on this guitar (passed down from family and thought to just be a junk guitar for kids to play with until now) and any info about this would be great, thanks!
I bought a guitar on e-bay. It’s seem to be a Kay but I don’t have the brand name on headstock. There is 3 small screw hole on headstock to fix the logo. This is an archtop guitar and the serial number is L 1656 . Please help me to confirm if it’s really a Kay guitar.
Regarding a Kay vintage acoustic guitar. My son just acquired one that was made around 1960 and is wondering what it is worth as he was told that this model is no longer made (not sure of the model).
Look on ebay under kay guitar, just scroll until you find a similar guitar. They made literaly thousands of guitars a month, so the value may not be very high, depending on the condition. good luck.: Regarding a Kay vintage acoustic guitar. : grandpa got it in the war been sitting in the case for along long time how much does this acoustic go for ?????????????????
I hate when people do this but have you heard anyting on your kdg88? I stumbled across one the other day and wonder what it’s worth. (sounds great!) [email protected]
i bought a kay a while ago it, its got the serial number W020185 and a made in china sticker on the back of the neck anybody know any info. is it made ’85?
its a strat style, bolt on neck, red, 2 white single coil pick ups, no pickguard, 6 in a row batwing headstock and 3 knobs.
the headstock logo is a gold ‘K’ in a circle underneath it says ‘Kay established 1890’ and then ‘ELECTRIC GUITAR’
I bought one yesterday, used of course, from a local music store for $100. It plays well, but it has seen better days. I have wanted a travel guitar, and this way I don’t have to worry about being the person that gives it its first dent.
Mine has three single-coil pickups like a Strat, but all of the other ones I have seen on-line have dual humbuckers. Mine also has a pick guard where the ones on-line do not.
Can any kind soul identify a Kay solid body guitar I have here? It is a Strat-meets-Burns shape, Fender shaped headstock, body basic sunburst with a single pickup on a black plastic scratch plate. Bridhe stop reminds me of an early telecaster with the chrome cover. Obviously very budget and without a serial number. There is a photo at http://www.strathbeg.com/pics.htm bottom right hand corner of the page.
Any help much appreciated, esp model and age.

Black Les paul Copy, Mother of pearl(fake?) Logo and fret markers. Stock #2244…Serial #526. Anyone know the birthday and value. Looks great and plays great.
Your Custom Kraft Les Paul Copy was made in Japan from 1969 to 1971 for St.Louis Music company and was the same model 2244 as the Electra with the same model number. It was discontinued in 1971 just before the Electra line was introduced.I have seen a few of these and none has a serial number over 3 digits long.Very few were made.Value is what someone is willing to pay.Probally $200-$400.
I have been given an old Kay Kraft guitar. It has the neck bolt, X bracing, Mother of Pearl head, gold leaf, arch top. The finnish is crassed, but it is in good shape for a 70 year old insterment. Can anyone tell me what it is worth? It needs a replacement pick guard, are they available?
I have one of these too, I brought it for £1 at a car boot sale, I’ve tried to research it a bit, but I could not find anything. The only thing I did find, is that they are not made any more.

Im trying to find out more info on this……i dont see any model number on it, all there is in the Kay vintage series since 1890 on the top and on the back there is a sticker that says made in china H.S. Choi and then handwritten is 947078. HELP.
I recently purchased a Kay guitar from the music store down the street from my house, and I would like to know some information about it. I know that it was made sometime in the 1960’s by Kay, and that’s all I know. It is a solidbody electric guitar with three pickups and six control knobs. (3 for tone, 3 for volume)It has a red tint to it that fades to black around the edges. I think that a big clue to finding out the year may be the fact that the control knobs are black with a gold face. On the face is a black triangle. If you have ANY information about this guitar or any questions, please reply.
Thanks,
Cody
I just bought this guitar at an antique shop. had it cleaned and restrung and it sounds wonderful. The guitar shop guy told me it is not a "modern" guitar as it lacks a neck adjuster. The only description is inside: L9866. A few inches away from that, and upside down, is stamped "N3". The guard is colored deep rose. On the handle, is an Art Deco inlay with the word "KAY" spelled out below the Kay logo. The body is a light chestnut color.
Any information would be appreciated.

Why doesn't Kay Guitar have any info about THEIR OWN products?
Hello Kay
Every post in here is asking for information that KAY GUITAR should have on their website. What is so hard about at least letting people know what year their damn instrument was manufactured?
I’d suggest everyone here send them an letter (to the address on their site) asking them to include a link where this can be found.

The best way I had found to identify my Kay was to go to http://www.vintaxe.com/menu_catalogs_acoustic.htm and actually look at each catalog they have. I matched the looks to what I have to what was available. For my guitar I found out it was a K6838 built either in 1959 or 1961.

Yes– but no Kay Catalogs are listed on the vintageAxe site:

I just got one. Its a nylon string hollowbody guitar. Its in terrible shape, looks like its been through WW2!!
The sticker inside reads:
Around the border of the circle "Veb Musikinstrumentenbau Markneukirchen"
Middle of the circle there is an "m" underneath which it says "musima"
Underneath that it says "Made in German Demokratic Republic"
I know nothing about this guitar. Please share any information that you might know.
Hi Eraj,
I have exactly the same thing. I think mine probably did go through WW2! I’ve had to glue bits back together, but a friend did learn classical guitar on it. It’s fun, but sadly I know nothing about it either. Good luck.
i have the Musima Classica guitar from ’81 i think. It’s a very good guitar, but when it’s that old i have some problems with tuning. contact me for some pictures

I am the proud owner of a MUSIMA nylon strung classical guitar. It is over 40 years old and was built in the old German Democratic Republic. I bought it from a music shop in Dartford around 1967. I had been saving sixpences in a whiskey bottle to buy the instrument I had seen in the shop window for many weeks. £13.00 10shillings or there about in old money.
: I am doing some research on this type of guitar. I’ve gone on the internet but don’t seem to get much info. Have called several places in New York to see if I can appraise it.
: Would you possibly have any info. on this type of guitar? Would it be considered a beginner’s piece?

I am looking for some information on a "NASH" acoustic guitar. The label inside says it was made by the MUSIMA Co. in Germany. It is in pristine condition and with my limited knowledge of guitars I believe it to be a high quality instrument. It appears to be Model MW65. The Serial # is 95 No. 11927. I don’t know if the 95 indicates the year it was made or what. Can you give me any information as to the quality or value of this guitar. I have some pictures that I will send along with this e-mail.

I use to work for JR Music Supply, and i can tell you that Musima built these classical guitars in late 1999, early 2000/ They were sold under the Calvin Cramer name. The letter’s CC were on the head stock. They sold 3 models. Two were laminate and the other was made of Ash. The tag on the inside read Musima, and had a unique serial number. They sold for $100 back then.
I just got a MUSIMA "Nashville "Made in Germany" serial number 95 No 11831, with a handwritten "nw61" written by the serial number.
It is a steel string acoustic narrow neck guitar. Seems very well made. The strings are VERY old and it is hard to tell about the sound. Any information anyone might have? "Made in Germany" means after the Wall came down in 1989.

They were typically aimed at the budget market and predominantly made of laminated timber. Like many things from countries behind the old "iron curtain", they had an agricultural feel to them and seemed to have been designed by a commitee.
Cheap materials used throughout. You would never see a Musima with rosewood back and sides or an ebony fingerboard- prerequisites of good quality classical guitars. They made some better quality instruments after 1989 with solid pine tops but they were up against budget models from Japanese makers such as Yamaha and Suzuki and Spanish manufacturers such as Admira and Alhambra.

Still, they put up a good fight for quite some time before finally folding a few years after the millenium – I’m not sure exactly.

I have a Musima classical guitar. I still play on it nowadays. Its sound is good having a warm tone. The finishing has been changed since it’s about 40 year old. I love it much and it always follows me wherever I go. I spent my first scholarship to buy it when I was there, in Tashkent, during former USSR time.
I also had one of those, and also bought it in Tashkent around 1986-1988, at the GUM department store, paid 100 rubles. Years later, in mid-nineties, left it at a friend’s place in the States, meaning to return for it later, but never did, which I now regret. Nice guitar, good memories.
Musima was one of the largest providers of stringed instruments to the former soviet union. The 200,000 sq ft factory (very large) was in the former eastern part of Germany. After the fall of USSR, a US importer of student grade instruments took them on as a supplier – JM Music Supply. They marketed them in the USA under the Calvin Cramer (CC) and NASH brands. The company made upright basses, cellos, violins etc. as well. I put together a fund to purchase Musima from the Treuhand in the late 90s. We were successful to a point. I represented them as interim President at the ’97 NAMM show. Renowned Philly-based luthier John Zeidler was to be the head of design and production. In the end, we couldn’t justify going through with the purchase due to entrenched corruption. We backed out and the company was sold off for its land. It’s a shame because there were some very skilled workers there. This was the town that CF Martin’s ancestors came from. The town has a long history of musical instrument making. A gem in the black forest. I remember my trips there fondly.
i have a musima classical guitar it is really cool and a awsome guitar , it was for my grand parents now its mine im playing on it for about 5 years great job musima

Hello,
I have a Webster archtop very similar to the Kay you described with the same number inside.
K1 8901. This was my father’s guitar he bought new in Pennsylvania during the 1950’s. I can’t find any info on the Webster name? Any info will be appreciated.
: My friend has in his possession a vintage Kay soildbody electric guitar. It looks like a maple body (kind of shaped like a fender strat, but with a shallower cut on the treble side of the neck) and a maple neck (3-on-a-side tuning keys), rosewood fretboard, 19 frets, kind of a natural burst, two pickups mounted on an off-white pickguard… I think they’re like soapbars, and have metal covers… the bridge is made of wood, with a metal stop tailpiece, both of which are covered by a ashtray-style bridge cover. Any information that someone might have on what the hell this thing is would be much appreciated. thanks!

l too own a KB 24 bass you are right it’s early 70s. Worth? l paid 70 pounds recently for it and have seen them ebay for 130 to 150. My one is sunburst with what looks like a 2 tone pick guard and maple neck. For a 40 year old bass it still sounds great.

I own a vintage Kay Bass guitar and I am wondering how much it is worth? The model is KB-24 and i think is from the 70’s but I’m not sure. Anybody please help me figure this out, and your help is greatly appriciated!!
Hi,I have a Kay KB-24 bass and stamped on the neck..when removed is a date stamp 68/3/31 (USA dating). From Wikipedia I found that they were made in USA from 20’s-60’s! Not much on nett except a few that have been stated as 70’s..which well may be..depending on how long they ran.
I always thought Kay was an Asian Co. originally but now see they were USA.
Would love to know for sure what this date stamp could mean!
I need help identifying my guitar. It is a electric with three pickups three nobs whammy bar. It is red with a black inlay. On the back of the neck in says made in Korea with the number KE34TMR stamped on a sticker. I have tried looking online with no avail. So any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Nichole
I bought a old Kay archtop on ebay awhile back and have had a hard time figuring out just how old it is. The number inside the f hole is N2 just wanted to know.
In about 1980 I bought a Kay guitar from Hesseys music shop in Liverpool, England. It was a Fender Lead shape and I think it only had one single coil pick-up but it may have had two. It was a black body with a black scratch guard. Does anyone here know of this model and what it was called?
Sunburst body, white plastic guard with black pencil thin trim, single piece above body bridge with straight bridge bar with 2 adjusting screws. Has wooden bar, 1.25" long under the "B" sting that stands about 1/2" high with slight cutaway, assumed to postion fingers. Head piece has silver "K" oval marking. Neck is fully laminated plywood, with maple finish, chrome tuning keys. Single (awesum) pickup single wound, with tone and volume controls only.

So, I have a Austin Hatchet…I find out that it is a Kay Guitar. I want to know a little more about it…Value, history.
Thank you very much…
This popular thread has been given its own page : Autin Hatchet?
I bought one yesterday, used of course, from a local music store for $100. It plays well, but it has seen better days. I have wanted a travel guitar, and this way I don’t have to worry about being the person that gives it its first dent.
Mine has three single-coil pickups like a Strat, but all of the other ones I have seen on-line have dual humbuckers. Mine also has a pick guard where the ones on-line do not.
Can you describe yours?
Hi, if you want to sell it, Ill have it. Im in south wales. Where are you?
I used to have one and loved it!

It depends on the fret markers; double trapezoid from 1955 to 1962; otherwise a 1952 to 1954
Is a K 22 a ladder braced, or X braced?

I got a sweet deal on a used AX, but I need to know the

Cheers

Hi Eraj,
I have exactly the same thing. I think mine probably did go through WW2! I’ve had to glue bits back together, but a friend did learn classical guitar on it. It’s fun, but sadly I know nothing about it either. Good luck.

: Thank you.

I remember my trips there fondly.

l too own a KB 24 bass you are right it’s early 70s. Worth? l paid 70 pounds recently for it and have seen them ebay for 130 to 150.

Regards,
John.

I bought a old Kay archtop on ebay awhile back and have had a hard time figuring out just how old it is. The number inside the f hole is N2 just wanted to know.

: If you describe the headstock very thoroughly, I can tell you, say, "Late ’50’s."
In about 1980 I bought a Kay guitar from Hesseys music shop in Liverpool, England. It was a Fender Lead shape and I think it only had one single coil pick-up but it may have had two. It was a black body with a black scratch guard. Does anyone here know of this model and what it was called?
Thanks
Sunburst body, white plastic guard with black pencil thin trim, single piece above body bridge with straight bridge bar with 2 adjusting screws. Has wooden bar, 1.25" long under the "B" sting that stands about 1/2" high with slight cutaway, assumed to postion fingers. Head piece has silver "K" oval marking. Neck is fully laminated plywood, with maple finish, chrome tuning keys. Single (awesum) pickup single wound, with tone and volume controls only.
