  5. Is this a KAY guitar.
    Slyhook

My mother bought a guitar from Houck’s Piano in Memphis around 1934. It was used at the time so I assume it pre-dates ’34. She’s always called it her Gibson but I cannot find out for sure. I have people who say it is a Gibson and others say it’s not. Still others say it might be an Epiphone or Kay. It looks like the picture of an old 1934 Gibson L-5 but the dots on the frets are diferent. There absolutely no markings anywhere on it and we have looked inside the best we can without taking it apart.

I would post pics but don’t know how. If you’d like to see it, email me and I’ll send you some (or tell me how to post them here).

Thanks for any info. My email is [email protected]

  6. Kay K520R
    Amy Stuart

Today I picked up a Kay American Heritage series #K520R at the Goodwill for 100 bucks. I don’t know that I got the best deal –as i have since learned it is not an actual “Kay” but a korean-made guitar from the 80’s or 90’s. However, for the money, it is a GREAT sounding guitar! Really nice ring and clarity–especially in the mid-range, with great resonance. And, this is with the old strings still on it…can’t wait to put on a medium gauge set and hear it pop.

Anyone know what this guitar would sell for?

  11. Kay Acoustic L7099
    James

So looking through my stuff I stumbled up an old Kay acoustic i traded a broken computer for in college. I have been trying to get a model name and date, but looking into it finding this info out on Kay’s is a challenge. Found a few similar on ebay, but my pickguard and headstock logo don’t match what I have seen.

Thought I would put it out to this fine community to see if anyone knew anything.

Some fun cheap building techniques the luthiers on here might enjoy:

Pickguard is directly SCREWED into the top

Bridge seems to have been traditionally glued, but looking inside it was also BOLTED in from the bridge to the body (bolt and nuts still on surprisingly)

Only age clue is that the tuners are open back 3 on a sheet Kluson’s (Says "Kluson MFG Chicago Ill.")

Number Stamped inside: L (space) 7099

    Thanks all!!!

This guitar was found at an auction by my grandmother and was given to my mother. I have been enlisted to find information about it but haven’t had much luck so far. We didn’t even know the brand name until I started my search. The logo is a gold circle with a k inside of it which I have identified as being a Kay. It has a flat top, 6 strings, mother of pearl inlays, and the wood on the back of the guitar almost looks like what is called zebra wood (green and orange striping). Also, it has a floral pattern on what looks like black plastic on both sides of the opening on front. Sorry I don’t know the names of the parts. 🙂 Inside the hole is a small white tag that says model no. k 300. All my research so far on this model # says its an electric but it clearly is not! I have pictures, if anyone can help.

Have you looked at the numbers under the pickup? It appears this is a 1964. I have True tone arch top acoustic electric . The serial number accessible through the F hole is L7496 ,and the pickup 51864

  14. Would like to know the year and Value?
    Theresa

My father passed away and he had a Kay acoustic. The numbers inside are K 6150 5756. Can anyone help me? Thank you.

    1. I found the same guitar.
      Anonymous

Hi, I realize your post was three years ago and its farfetched that you’ll get this, but just in case. I have found an old guitar in a dumpster with the exact same serial numbers on the inside, I was just wondering if you’d found any more information about it. Thanks!

      Desiree Street

I have an acoustic Kay K570, and I was curious to see if anyone would have any information on it. Company info, year of the model, how many were made, worth, etc.
It is in ,for the most part, perfect condition.
Has Black pick guard on Both sides of the sound hole with painting of flowers and vines.
Pick guards have phillips screws[from what i understand the phillips screws might indicate that it was Post 1952(ish)]
Has Mahogany(?) back with engraving of flowers and vines.
Has a Gold Sticker with K(in black)on the head of the guitar(didnt know if this would indicate a special series)
Has the Model number K570 inside the guitar with the serial number 300326 inside the body.
Under the Model and Serial number is the word "second"
But it doesnt have any info as to where it was made(from what i understand if it was a Korean model(after the company sold) it might indicate that as well inside where the Model and Serial Numbers would be..

I have been searching all over the internet and I can only seem to find tiny bits of info here and there. I cant even find any pics of what other K570s might look like.
The Kay website was not very helpful as it doesnt even say that this model number(K570)exists(?!?!?)
Any information on the guitar would be wonderful.
      Thanks so much.

      1. Kay Guitar Model K570
        Kari

I have this same guitar. It was purchased for me from a pawn shop around 1978-1979, for $100.00. It is exactly as everyone is describing it. (Dual pick guards, with flowers and vines, engraved vines around the back, etc.). Inside the hole, is a sticker..Model No. ‘K570’, Serial number 300376. I looked further, up toward the neck area, and came up with ‘1976 3 15’, which I believe suggests it was made March 15, 1976. My bridge is cracked, and was thinking about replacing it, versus getting a new guitar, because everyone I have spoken to indicates that it is a worthless guitar, however pretty. Now that I have read these comments, I think I will spend the money to get the bridge replaced! Thanks! Kari

: How old and rare is this guitar
If you find out, I have the same guitar, very unusual, single cutaway, jumbo, bell shaped soundhole, flat top acoustic. I can date this one to 1957 or 1958. Have a picture of the previous owner and his son taken in 1959 with Dad playing the guitar. Son says, Dad got it thru the speigel catalog in either ’57 or ’58. It is in great condition and still very playable. I am trying to establish a value on this.

In response to your post. Go to http://www.kayguitar.com There you will find catalogues of Kay guitars according to the year the guitar was made. I too have a K6102 N-3. It is listed in the 1967-1968 Catalogue. There is a picture too, so you know for sure. It is called the Kay Country II Model Flat Top Guitar. It sold for $79.95 back then. Check it out to see if this is your guitar.I can’t believe I finally found some info on this guitar I bought in the late sixties!……..Jan

    1. Kay Model KDG70S
      MAXBARN

Hello – I see this is an old post but wondering if you ever found out anything about it. I bought one exactly like yours – Kay model KDG 70S – also with the double pickguard. Not sure but I know back in the day a lot of company’s denoted special order with the leter “S”. That’s about the only thing that makes sense as I’ve researched this model and also can’t find anything else about it. Happy to find this so that I know someone didn’t hand stamp the S on there and it was a true production guitar. If you’ve ever found anything else about it, I’d appreciate a heads up on it – my email is [email protected]. Thanks – Max

My Father-in-Law has a Kay 12 string guitar that has Steel Reinenforced Neck made in Korea stamped on the back of the neck. I would like some information about this guitar and am not sure how to go about getting it. The guitar belonged to his mother and was believed to be purchased in the mid-late 60’s somewhere in Chicago. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

  19. Kay 3599 Acoustic Guitar
    John Pluma

My cousin bought a K3599 for 20 bucks. It appears the neck is pulling towards the top, causing high action. He has steel strings on it but it seems to have classical bracing. My question is, could this be a nylon string guitar? We’d appreciate any info you can give us on this guitar.

Rply: Yes, they are classical guitars meant for nylon strings. You may want to refurbish it a bit too ^_^

  20. kay starter series?
    Ryan

I have a guitar I got prlly around 1990, but I’m not sure on the year. It says Kay starter series, model number K-72. It’s in mint condition. How much can I expect to get from it? Also anyone know the year?

  21. Kay Guitar L419 6868
    Melinda Boyd

This guitar belonged to my husband’s grandfather. He carried it around, playing for the troops during WWII. I am hoping that someone could tell me, please, how much the guitar is worth. It’s in pretty good shape as old as it is; the only thing that isn’t original, to my knowledge, is the strings and the bridge. His grandfather hand-carved a new one for it years ago. We’re not really looking to sell it as the memories it holds are priceless, but are wondering just how much it may be worth. Thanks for any help you can provide!

I believe that you have (Kay model 553 HCS or Hummingbird) what is referred to as a “High Burst Finish” guitar. As best I can tell, the retail value of same is between $140 & $150.
