I am a science teacher and have students working on a project investigating the "chemistry of guitars"...or what are the strings made out of and why? If you could direct us to any information, we would appreciate it. Also...if you have any string pieces (scraps) that you could send so that they can run tests (such as exposing different strings made from different metals to an acid that is close to our skin's pH), they would be THRILLED. I encourage my students to explore the chemistry behind any subject that they feel passionate about. Two of my 7th grade students are avid musicians...the guitar being their favorite instrument.
