    Tony T

I had a few days away in York and decided to pop into a music shop to have a quick look at the lovely guitars on sale.
There’s this young lad strumming away on a few of the well known names like Martin and a £750 epiphone which was rather nice.
They were good sounding guitars, then the shop assistant asked him to try a middle priced Brunswick and the sound that
that came out of that guitar was great, the lad couldn’t get over it.
Just goes to show you don’t have to pay loads of money for a decent guitar.

I bought my Tama acoustic around 1980 and have forgotten what I paid for it. I’ve no idea what model it is…it just says ‘Made In Japan’ inside the hole!! I’d love to know what it is worth now. (I’m not selling it…just need a valuation) Can anyone help me if I send photos?

I bought a Sebring L-5 with a TKL soft case that was set up at a Guitar Center in NYC.

paid $200…..I can’t believe how well it plays and how well it is finished. The serial number seems to indicate it was made in 1976….it has only one slight scratch omn the back which I polished out.
This guitar lack nothing looks, feel, or sound. I’ll have it for the rest of my life (I’m now 66)

I wish I could find some liyerature about this model. The Korean’s got this very right!

I have been playing 47 years.

I have the dark brown sunburst copy and I also had the light maple copy (My buddy owns it now). I feel that the Sebring is a great jazz box. I put heavy gage flatwounds on it. The guitar is made in Korea & I don’t remember the name of the company but it may be the "Kaman Company", who makes most of the guitars from Korea.: I have an L-5 copy of a gibson made by sebring it is maple and plays quite well. Anyone with any information about Sebring?

yes i have a little info on sebring. the parent co. is vmi industries. they no longer make guitatrs. i once owned a sebring blade bass. cheap, but played ok. i’m sure your sebring is a better quality instrument simply because oif the copy of an L-5 which takes more time and craftsmanship then the generic styled p/jazz bass i had. good luck on the L-5……rock er i mean "jazz on"

        Bud

I received this as a gift after drooling over it for a time. I had a Gibson 335 ,walnut colored, at one time and the Sebring plays and sounds every bit as good. The only problem is that the neck is too far set into the body making access to the higher frets difficult. But its a great guitar.

      Steve V.

I have a Global Bass and I love it. My parents gave it to me in the late seventies for christmas. It was bought out of the J.C. Penny catalogue. My friend liked it so much he used it some while he lived in Nashville in the studio. It may have been bottom of the barrel dept. store but it is one of those thing that happen to be more than what you pay for. Mine cost $89.00 also.

      JoHnNy HaWk

Hey guys. I looked up Global Basses in Ebay tonight and found the exact Global Bass my mother bought me as a kid in 1979. I did a Google and found this mesege board. I noticed a few of you very interested in the Global Company. I don’t quite remember the exact origin, but I can tell you that they were sold by WOOLWORTH’S stores in the 70’s. My mother paid $89 for mine back then. They were bottom of the barrel cheap Dept. store guitars, but I liked mine. It really brings back memories though as my amp bought at the same place was $25 and my lead guiatr player had an old Sears Silvertone. WOW!! Let me know if you have any further questions and GOOD LUCK!!!

    5. Re: global guitar

Yeah I also have a Global acoustic that sounds like what Matt describes. My mom bought it for me when I was younger, so I too have no clue about the company or their models.

Wow. I have an old Global acoustic modeled after the Gibson Dove. I Call mine the Global Pidgeon LOL. Would like to know more about this company as well!

      1. Re: global guitar
        Dean Bailey

Well, I’m not sure if this is correct, but Global Guitars might have been a subsidary company of harmony guitars. I am not 100% sure, not really even close, but it’s all that I could figure out from looking at some old harmony acoustics, they have a sticker on the inside that says Global on the inside. Might be the guitar model name. I have a global guitar that has a sg type body, strat neck, and a single p90 pickup. It has a pickguard with a volume and tone, plus a pickguard mounted output jack, along with a tune-o-matic style bridge, with an ashtray style tailpiece. This guiatr plays excellent and provides the perfect punch and tone. I love the way the neck plays( it’s got some fake ebony fretboard, that’s white colored under the epoxy or whatever it is that’s covering it). The action is a little high, but I love it.

My grandfather just found a guitar in his attic & asked me if I’d like it, he was just going to throw it away. Just looking at it it appears to be a Gibson SG, I still have to clean it up & see it it’ll still play. If anyone finds anything out about their guitar, I’d like to hear about it.

Hi, I have a Global Guitar, that has a Les Paul cutout, and I can’t find any information anywhere. Its good to know that I’m not the only one with one. I found it in the basement of my parents house, and I really would like to know how much it is worth. If I find any info on it I will be sure to tell you guys. Hope you’ll do the same. See ya later.^_^

          Jason

I have a Global Guitar that is a model of a Gibson E335 Semi-Hollow Body. Looking for more info just like you guys. I found mine for $10 at a Thrift Store and I like the way it plays. It is also in GREAT Shape. Someone told me that it was sold through Sears Roebuck Catalog in the early 70’s. I have not verified this though. Any information that you guys find would be appreciated.

        David Monteleone

I have a Global thats is pretty much a Gibson LP knock-off, I really like it though. I put a SD 59 in the bridge position and now its my main guitar……it is really heavy though. I would also like to know more.

      1. Global Strat Copy
        jmz

I have a Global electric guitar, bolt-on neck, Strat copy with sunburst paint. Bought it in the early 1980s from a friend for $50, still have it. The ashtray-style tailpiece mentioned above is on this model, too, and whatever kind of bridge it has, really sucks and is kind of rusty. It needs new hardware badly, like some pickups and keys and I would love to replace the bridge with something with a whammy bar.

      Hey Y’all,
I got what I think is a 1969 Greco Bass, I know its a Greco but think its a 69. It is shaped like a Hollowbody SG. Dark wood,"Mahogany" with black sides. I am not sure what its worth but I think its about 250-400 range. I would love some more info on grecos but all I find is Japanese Language sites. WEll I am looking for money or a possible trade for a guitar. I am pretty open to suggestions, as my tastes are pretty eclectic But I am not interested in 75 dollar specials. I will tell ya pretty quick if I am even interested.

Yes, I have one, bought from a man who bought it 23 years ago. What does the serial number inside say?
A wonderfull guitar to look at, and a pleasure to play I have to admit. It takes some strength and attack to get the most out of it, to make the harmonics rise and shine. I am glad I bought it.

Hi Tim…I have a 32 and am also having difficulty in getting good info on Sanchis. Try Google search for London Guitar Studio, I think they advertise 31 at around £250. As at 19oct2005 there are 2 Vicente Sanchis on UK ebay. Seems to me that late 30s the 40s are big money…£500-£1000. What we have got is a really fab very serious student/gifted amateur guitar that has lotsa great write-ups. Funny but I cant find a photo of a 32 that looks like mine. Have you tried the London distributer? I am tempted to put mine on ebay and hope for anything over £100. Good luck, Ross

He had this guitar for years. It was a really really sweet sounding guitar. As I recall, he told me it was hand made by Billy Grammer, from Nashville and he bought his there in the mid 60’s sometime. I have an acoustic Aspen Landola cutaway. There is no seriel # that I can find. There is the LA insignia on the headstock and in the soundhole it says Aspen Landola, Made in Finland, use only light or medium light strings. Does anybody have any knowledge about these guitars and their value. I bought mine about ten years ago. I don’t remember how much I paid, couldn’t have been much more than $200.
It is a nice guitar but I want to sell it and I want to know how much to ask for it. Thanks

      paleobibliomaniac

I also have an Aspen – it’s a 12-string, model D28 12, cause I think it’s a Martin Dreadnought 28 knockoff. Only thing is, it’s much better! The sound is excellent, it frets like magic, and the tonality has improved with age (I’ve had it now since 1975 – the year it was made. The serial number on it is 58750616. I paid just over $175 for it brand spanking new, and it’s going to be the guitar I have when I die.

I have an ASPEN D-28 N°58760093 which I bought in London in 74/75 (I think !!) I’ve just repaired it as I hadn’t touched it for about 20 yrs after it fell from a wall suspension. At the time a local Paris lutier didn’t want to do the job as he was afraid he might not make a successful repair. So recently courageously tackled the job and have at last fixed the instrument. I’m glad to be able to play it again, I’d quite forgotten what a great sound it had and still has.I have no idea what it might be worth now though.Does anyone ? But I don’t intend selling it.

    3. Re: Aspen guitar
      Maggie

my husband just bought an Aspen 12 String Acoustic at an antique shop. It needs strngs, but looks to be in good shape otherwise and has been autographed by Gary Stewart. As best I can tell from researching the internet, it’s a Martin copy. Might have been marketed by the American Music Company, but I don’t think the company is still in business. Looks to be late 70’s, but would love to find a way to date it.. but can’t find a site with any serial number information.

      1. Re: Aspen guitar
        Norm

I have an AD3512 but the serial number starts with a 6 where a lot of others start with a 3 (65760314). In any case, I’ve owned a couple Martin 12 string, played the D12-42 and currently own a Guild F512 and this Aspen sounds as good or better then they do. I don’t know how they made the AD3512 but it’s the best cheap acoustic I’ve ever played, period. I also own a bunch of Martin 6 string guitars including a D-45 Koa and the Aspen is right up there with them.

      2. Re: Aspen guitar
        jr

I have an Aspen AD-35 ("A" for Aspen, "D-35" for the Martin which it’s a copy of) which I bought in 1978 for, I think, $125. I ordered it from a place in California. I can’t recall the name of the place, but I’m pretty sure it’s defunct now. I love the sound, and the look of the 3-piece rosewood back. The Grover tuners keep it in tune wonderfully. for what its worth, i got my aspen from my father who i think bought it in the early 80s or late seventies. Its a ad15, I also own a martin and to tell you the truth if my house were burning down and I could save only one thing its this guitar. The tone is unreal, if I could i’d buy a hundred more just to have back ups in case something happened to the first 99.

Aspen AD-30, Ser# 30760219. Hummingbird clone. I can’t believe how nice this guitar plays. Action is nice. A real good fingerpicking guitar. Great shape. I think it’s worth Grovers and a bone saddle and nut. I was looking for a beater and I got a keeper. See oneBuy it. Any more info out there? E-Mail

Changed Nut and saddle to bone. put Gibson Grovers on. Had setup for 12’s. The only thing this guitar lacks is the sustain a Gibson guitar has. decay time was compared to J-50

I have a Japan model AD2912. Bought it new in 1978, It’s in new condition and I still have the original hard shell case which is like new as well. Its a 12 string and plays great, sounds wonderful.

              Tony Amburn

I also have the AD2912 and got it brand new back in the 70’s. I have yet to find a 12-stirng guitar that equals its’ sound quality. When picking songs of Croche, John Denver and other acoustic greats it is equal. I got to play with John Denver once as I was very ill, thought to be terminal. We played "This Old Guitar", "Annie’s Song" and "Grandma’s Feather Bed". He commented on how well my guitar sounded, and just being nice how well I played. Being so sick I knew better. He may have had some problems later in life, but he was a great man.

So, with the memories and the sound, I still play and wouldn’t trade it for anything. I say hold on to it.

I’ve had my AD-800 (made in japan) serial number 80750010 since I was 14 (1976). I won it in a contest at a local music store. It came with Grovers, spruce top with herringbone inlay. Rosewood neck with inlay on the sides and mother of pearl markers (looks like a Maltese Cross?). Headstock has an Aspen logo and leaf logo, both in pearl inlay.

                  1. Aspen AD 800
                    Tom

Just picked up a basket case AD800
Cracked top, split and pulled up bridge tec.
Paid $75 including a stand. Because it had a set of Grovers
On it and they cost more than that. and my grandson needed a stand.

Well I thought I had nothing to lose, so I started fixing the problems.
Everything went well and now I have a great playing great sounding guitar
                    This was made in 1975
Saw price list on line and this was their most expensive model
                    Listed at $490

This is my second Aspen, my wife bought me a 1976 AD25 new in
76 for my birthday (yes I am that old). Was a cheaper model list $139.00
When the nut broke I put it away for years. Finally fixed and could believe
What a great little guitar it was.

                    1. I have an AD800 that I picked up here (UK) it had a crack in the front and vintage strings on it. After repairing the crack in the front and putting a new set of strings on it I was pleasantly surprised , it sounds great but I have no idea of its value over here as Aspen was only imported to the U.S . I have looked online but have found very little info on this particular model. These threads have been the most informative and I was wondering if any one knew anymore about the AD 800….? Factory it Japan ? What other guitar brands were made there? what these guitars are worth now?
                      Thanks

I bought an Aspen AD35, serial #35760679, in 1976 from Whittier Music, a defunct music stoe in Whittier, Ca. I still have it and enjoy it. Does anyone have info about the woods used in the guitar’s constructin, or info on the company tht made it?

              jr

Since I have the same AD35 model, I can tell you that it has a spruce top and rosewood back and sides. I can’t tell you what kind of spruce or whether it’s Brazilian or Indian rosewood, but I’m guessing it’s Indian rosewood because of the straight grain. I’m also guessing the neck is maple and the fretboard ebony, but I am not a wood expert by any means. Mine was ordered from a company in California. (See my earlier post for serial number, etc.)

I also have an Aspen AD-35, also purchased in 1978. It always sounded great, with a high end ring & harmonics that would go on forever. Stays tuned great(love them gold grovers) However, it developed a buzz in a couple of frets so I had it gone over & the frets leveled, nut trimmed & now it plays as good as it sounds. I have no intention of ever letting go of it.

      1. I have a Aspen D-38, cannot find a serial number on it but it is certainly a solid top guitar, has a beautiful tree of life inlay on the neck, an unusual larger soundhole than the AD-25, sounds very nice and plays like butter.

I do have photos as well

      2. Some clarifications
        Mr. Toad

I have a 1970’s Aspen AD-28, made in Japan, as well as lots of other guitars. It’s a great guitar, and I’ve been very pleased with it, but I’d like to clarify a few things.

        1. These were not “lawsuit” guitars. At one point in the 70’s, Martin sent a cease-and-desist letter to Takamine because they were using a headstock logo that was very similar to the the traditional Martin headstocks. The lawsuit myth has grown since then, but Aspen was NOT put out of business by Martin.

        2. In general, these are laminate, not solid wood guitars. I have frequently seen these advertised as solid spruce tops, please know they are not! I’m not saying laminates are bad. I previously owned a Martin HD-28 Shenandoah Series, which was a Martin made with laminate, and the sound was virtually the same as a “real” D-28. I have not seen an Aspen D-35 up close, but I’m pretty sure they are laminate, too. Laminates provide a means for guitar makes to offer lower priced products, and when done correctly, they can be great sounding instruments.

        3. Let’s not kid ourselves about the sound. Aspens sound great, but you’re not going to get a Martin D28 or D35 sound out of a $200 MIJ laminate guitar! However, I’ve played a few 70’s MIJ Martin-knock offs from other companies, and none of them sounded anywhere close to the Aspen.

With all that said, I do agree that Aspen guitars are terrific! My Aspen stays in the living room for easy access. I take my better guitars to gigs, but the Aspen gets played daily, and I’m continually searching for the elusive AD-35 (which is how I ended up here!). I see them on Ebay and Reverb periodically, but the word seems to be out now, so I don’t think I’ll be finding one for cheap 🙁

        1. ASPEN AD 35G
          RON FLOYD

I read your post. I have a ad35g since 1977. My late father was a teacher and got several for students when he ran into the Aspen rep. were he was a teacher in Washington DC. I got one of them. Still have the sales slip and papers on it.

The question of the woods used to make it have always come up. Several years ago I had a will regarded Luther look at it and he said it was not laminate but soild rosewood back and sides. The top was soil sika spruced.

He said it was a drop dead copy of a Martin D35

He said to tell if the top was soild wood, look at the edge of the sound hole cutout. The wood grains rapes around and smooth, were as laminate is rough and looking closely you can see the center of the glue up on the two woods.

I also keep this AD35 in my office and living room and play it most everyday. I do have Martins and Taks but this is my most favorite. Maybe because I have had it the longest and my father gave it to me.

        1. Your guitar is a model 28
          Bruce Jackson

Your guitar is a model 28 (copy of Martin D28), made in year 1975, the remaining four digits are probably the individual serial number. It’s also possible that number is two pairs. 05 may mean something else and your guitar was number 17.

      3. Aspen guitar
        Jamie Robb

Hi I’ve got a Aspen A118 serial 000121 it’s got a great sound very pleased with it does anyone have any Info on this model if anyone can help me it would be appreciated very much

      4. Guitar love
        Wyomike

Got my AD-35 in 77 or 78 from Musicians Warehouse. I have really enjoyed the way having a guitar that I have been able to give something really meaningful to my kids. Music has been a great past-time with my kids and it was nice to have the old Aspen from my college days to pull out and sing some worship songs with and then just recently a bunch of Jimmy Rodgers songs along with the pastor from the other side of town in a public setting for entertainment. His wife on bass, my wife and two pastors on vocals. Sometimes I get a little guitar envy when I see and hear a Takemine, a Taylor, a Gibson, etc. But then I remember how I adopted my old guitar. Not looking at it but with my back turned to it while a friend played various guitars in the store we went guitar shopping at. My ear and my heart made the choice. The 3-piece Rosewoood back, spruce-top, ebony fingerboard have not lost their character. I quit looking at those new guitars. I am totally content with the joy the Aspen gives me even at my lower-level skill at playing it. Christ has made the difference in my life and the Aspen has made the difference in my music.
Good to have a community where others found this golden nugget, the Aspen guitar. It plays well.

      5. I have an AD35 my wife bought me in 1977 from Musicians Supply, in El Cajon Cal. The only paperwork I have is the original set-up checklist that shipped with the guitar. It’s a beautiful, great sounding guitar. It is made in Japan, and has a “I Saigo label on the neck block. It is constructed of all solid tonewoods. Spruce top, mahogany neck, ebony board, rosewood back and sides. I’m sure Martin was really pissed. It’s beautiful, and sounds great. I think it likely is Brazilian rosewood. Lots of nice wavy grain, and I cannot see the builders following the international ban so soon after it was implemented. As another commented, they still haven’t stopped hunting whales over there have they. I believe they are far more valuable than what they are selling for. Hehe, still have the wife too.

      6. I have an AD25 with serial #:25761255. I’ve had it since I was about 7 I’m now 28. Got it off of a trash trailer from my grandpa’s rent house. Trying to get some info on it. It does have pickups in it to hook it up to an amp.it has some ware n tare from life ie moving, kids, but since I saved it from being trashed it’s in pretty damn good shape.

      7. Ventura Aspen 12 string
        Joe

        Hello,

I have an C. Bruno and Son, Inc., Ventura Aspen 12 string guitar. The numbers I find inside it are: 8006068 and AD 3512. The research I’ve done is that it is probably a Japanese made Martin clone. I bought it used years ago from the original owner, paid $100 for it. Can anyone help me with info about? I’m not interested in selling it, just like to know more of its history..
Thanks for helping me find out about this old sweet 12 string.

        Joe

      8. ASPEN A118-12
        Grplans

Just bought an A118-12 12 string on Ebay.co.uk. It seems to be an early Korean-made model, serial number 000112.

This instrument is in really excellent condition for its age – I can find only one tiny mark on the back and sides and a small ding on the top near the bridge. It has a spruce top, a chunky D-profile mahogany neck and mahogany back and sides. I’m guessing that the back & sides are laminated but the quality of the finish appears to be excellent. I’m unsure of the hardwood used for the fingerboard – it could be rosewood. The brass frets are in excellent condition. The bridge seems to have been replaced fairly recently. The instrument has great tone and the action is reasonable. The strings are past their sell-by date but I intend to take it down to our local luthier in a couple of days for re-stringing and to have the set-up checked.

        1. Amazing !!! I have number
          Bengt

Amazing !!! I have number 000109, which I bought in East London, South Africa in about 1986.
it really is the nicest sounding 12 string I have ever played !!!!

Hi..I have number 000154 which gas been sat doing nothing for years..it needs a new set of strings but is in very good condition in general.
It’ll be going on ebay later as I need to make some space here at home.

      9. Aspen Guitar AD28 Made in Japan
        Carolyn Clements Lamb

I own an Aspen AD 28 that my husband bought me in 1973 or 1974. Told me it was a Martin but had the Aspen name. I have played this guitar for 45 years in Church. It’s a Martin Remake. It has a great base sound and is in very good condition with the exception of a few nicks. These are “Lawsuit Guitars.” The company that made them was put out of business because they were Martin remakes. I love mine and all those I have played with says it a great sounding guitar. I love my Aspen and will put up against a Martin one any day.

        1. Aspen AD28
          JohnG

I’m glad to find an up-to-date site with a current discussion on Aspen guitars. The story of the lawsuit is known but some only know of the Korean made ones that came on the market in the 1980’s. I’ve had two acoustics (Made in Japan) and the sound and tone is incredible. Both had some damage when I bought them. I had a D-28 which had a warped top and the string height was high but not unplayable. The other one, a LC5 classical which my dad got for me at a garage sale for $20. The bridge plate had come out of the body and a very bad repair was made. I was able to make a good repair and I still have it. I recently installed a piezo pickup with volume control in it. Hopefully I didn’t do much damage to the value but I can’t find any info on it anyway so I’m not worried about it. I bought a very expensive Martin a couple years ago (a goal) but I like the Aspen just as much.

      10. Aspen numbers
        Ralph Lodovici

Inside my Aspen 6 string are the numbers 51.3.22. Could anyone help me? These numbers were underneath a label that was peeled off. Thank you. Your help would be greatly appreciated. (That same number was stamped twice)

      11. Aspen AD-27 M
        Ralph Lodovici

Could somebody help me out please? I’m trying to help a friend and I might buy the guitar. I CAN’T FIND ANYTHING ANYWHERE ABOUT THIS MODEL NUMBER ! I’m almost sure it was made in Korea and my friend raves about it.

The MODEL NUMBER IS AN AD-27 M. It doesn’t seem to exist. I cannot find that number anywhere. I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you. My friend says it is one of these “lawsuit guitars”. Were those guitars made in Korea? I read that the quality of Korean Aspen’s diminished. It’s a 6 string acoustic.

          1. Aspen Guitar Info
            Rob

Hello, I am trying to find information on the following Aspen guitar. AD-35, S/N 35780199. Made in Japan. Inspected by K Saigo. Anyhelp would be appreciated.

            1. According to what I've found
              Anonymous

According to what I’ve found it goes: 35= model, 78= year, last four digits are individual instrument number. I have a ’77 AD35. Love it.

              1. You are correct. I have one
                Bruce jackson

You are correct. I have one too…solid wood, full body sound. mine is 35774454, so they are made in the same year. I bought mine new in San Francisco in about 79/80

                1. Aspen AD35-G
                  Jimbob

I have a 1977 vintage AD35-G. Can’t remember where I bought it other than somewhere in Orange County, CA. in the late 70’s. Mine has a serial number of 35774476. It looks to me like the materials are first rate-very nice, tight/straight grained solid spruce top, mahogany neck and rosewood back and sides. Workmanship is generally quite good for a mass produced guitar.

        Manny

Does anyone know how many Aspen ad – 15’s were made? I can’t find anything on the Internet about them. My fiancé gave me one and I just dropped it off to get a little work done to it. How does it compare to the Martin and what year were they made?

        Todd

I have an Aspen ACE-600 guitar made in Japan. It is a dreadnought acoustic, and we were thinking thinking the CE stood for cutaway electric but this looks very much like the D28s. My father bought it used sometime in the late 80s or early 90s. Anybody have any info on this?

      14. Aspen Guitars. Looking to Trade
        Matt

Hi all. I am an Aspen fan, like most, I came across my frist (an AD-35) by chance in a used music shop. I now have a DR-35, two D-28s and a D-26R. I am interested in trading one of my D-28s for a D-28-12. If anyonehas any interest, please contact me and we can exchange photos and info.

          Jack

I own one I have had since the 70’s. Still plays & sounds great. Has been mostly in the original case all these years. I can send pix if you like. What kind of trade do you have in mind ?

      15. Aspen AD2812 12-String Guitar
        Tony

I got my Aspen AD2812 Guitar in 1975. I was very sick and my parents asked if there was anything I wanted. They couldn’t afford it at the time but they got it. In all that time, and as many 12-string guitars I have played, I have yet to find one that is a clean and smooth sounding as the Aspen. This guitar I still have after all this time. I had a 6-string Alvarez tha came close but not quite. If you can get one, hold on to it.

      17. Aspen 12 string guitar
        Lee

I have an Aspen 12 string model 2812 that I bought new on 8/11/75 (I still have the original sales receipt) for 127.00,and I
paid another $40.00 for the hard case. The tag inside the guitar says it was made in Japan. It is still in mint condition, and,
like the other entries for Aspen, it sounds GREAT! I have owned two Gibson guitars and a few others including a Yamaha
folk guitar, and this is the only one I’ve kept thru the years.

      D T Ellison

I have a T90 which I bought brand new in 1982 for £120.00. I knew at the time that it was a cheap guitar but it was all I could afford. I’m intrigued that there is interest in these instruments as although since I’ve had a succession of Ibanez’s etc I actually still like this guitar, it’s neck is straight & the intination is pretty good with a low action. The p/ups are a bit crappy as is the selector switch likewise the frets have got some worn flat spots but it seems to have potential as a fixer-upper!
It’d be interesting to see if anyone has more info’ on these guitars.

    3. Re: satellite guitars
      Gareth

The info I have, is I own one, cherry sunburst, mine now has epiphone pickups as the pickups went.. as for age I have asked in a local music shop and they said they started making them in the 60’s.
They had a black one which he said would retail at about £100.00 second hand.

As far as I know mine is around 20 years old maybe more.

        Victor Wild

I have 3… 2 black Satellite les pauls from 1977 and 1978 and a Satellite fat strat with tremalo i’m not sure on the age of that one. I paid £70 for both of the Les Pauls they are in mint condition apart from having a new bridge put on the 78′ version and the strat i rescued from a skip… i’m looking to buy more and parts from these guitars if you have any Satellite guitars or parts email me at [email protected] I would be intrested in buying them.

      2. Re: satellite guitars
        chalky929

Satellite 90/t, the gibbson les paul copy, was imported from asia around the 1970’s, the black ones have mother of pearl in the frets, but the sunburst ones (i have one!) dont seem to have them. I "aquired" mine from a house i was gutting out for the council. Thought it would be worthless and that id use it as a spare (for when that annoying friend who thinks he can play wants a jam, type thing). Ive just seen one on ebay, for £19. Bargian, the guy dosnt know its real value. Remember, these guitars are now in the Vintage bracket! Reckon the £100 mark could be a bit of a bargain!

: Satellite 90/t, the gibbson les paul copy,….

The 90/T isn’t a LP copy…it’s a double fat strat style guitar. I have one so marked….and is included in the catalog at vintaxe. jd

      David

I own a Bently model 5118 12 string acoustic guitar. Bought it for $275 in 1999. Picked it up played it for 10 seconds and had to have it. I am yet to meet a guitar player that didn’t remark WHAT A SMOOTH PLAYING 12 STRING !!!!!!!! NEVER FELT A 12 STRING THAT PLAYED SO SWEET!!!!!!! Regardless of the monitary value this Guitar is by far the best feeling, playing & sounding 12 string that my fingers have ever known, wouldn’t sell it for the world. I never cared for a 12 string prior to owning this one and have never felt another acoustic or electric 12 string no matter the price that feels and plays so good.

    2. Re: Bently Guitar Info
      Thomas Coykendall

Any suggestion that Bently guitars are somewhat higher end guitars like a gibson, martin or taylor are non-sense. I bought one approx. 4 years ago for $15. Not a bad deal in a pinch to have an acoustic guitar. I was offered a Bently last month for $30 and walked away.

    3. Re: Bently Guitar Info
      Chris Williamson

I bought my Bently 5135 new in 1988 at Bibb Music in Macon, GA. It is a flat-top acoustic 6 w/dark finish and a generous cutaway. I bought it becuase of the cutaway so I could play acoustic leads. It has been my only acoustic and I have played it exclusively ever since. I love it and everyone who tries it out loves it too. Great neck, great action, wonderful sound, just an outstanding guitar overall. I shaved down the bridge so low that the neck started to warp so I had it serviced a few years ago, and it came out sweeter than ever. I just put new strings on it today and it’s nearly good as new. They aren’t worth a whole lot as far as I know, so if you find one in good shape and you like it, snatch it up and you won’t be disappointed.

After all these years,it still has a great sound-mine needss repair to the bracing around the sound hole, but i just use a capo. As far as "value", the "blue book" ‘value is $40-$80!! WHAT A CROCK!!!

I just bought a Bently 6 string guitar today at an Auction for 75 dollars. I was wanting something to be able to "abuse" a little more than the guitar that I have right now. Did you guys that bought your guitar for ~250 buy it from a store new or was it a pawn shop. I am also interested how my "new" guitar is worth.

      3. Re: Bently Guitar Info
        Mike

oops! I ment to be a follow-up- (first timer at this sight sorry!)
I own a dozen gutitars, from an 8-string classical to a five string frettless carvin bass. I too, have never gotten into 12 string gtrs, nor heard of Bently untl yesterday. Though not a 12 string (which sounds like they make a great 12er, I’d like to try one!)& a buddy owed me $30 & came by with a Les Paul style guitar. I owned a heavy version of a copy of this type of axe in the past, but it broke. And after a friend of mine bought an Epiphone one which sounded great, I said to myself I need one for my collection(I give all my guitars equal play, not just dust collection). Coincidently I got the phone call about settling the debt & said I’ll check it out. The neck alone on the thing is beautiful. Mind you, most of my guitars are custom built, but this one plays well. -Just need to drop some new electronics, but worth the investment. I’ll probably play some Death Metal on it. Any suggestions as to restoration of pick-ups anyone?

        oops! I ment to be a follow-up-
I own a dozen gutitars, from an 8-string classical to five string frettless carvin bass. I too, have never gotten into 12 string gtrs, nor heard of Bently untl yesterday. Though not a 12 string (which sounds like they make a great 12er, I’d like to try one!) A buddy owed me $30 & came by with a Les Paul style guitar. I owned a heavy version of a copy of this typr of axe in the past, but it broke. And after a friend of mine bought an epiphone one which sounded great, Isaid to myself I need one for my collection. _I am writing to you because I too, have a Bently, inside it reads Model 5123. I’ve no clue if it is a good guitar, a starter’s guitar, or whatever. I am learning toplay now on another guitar, but I want to fix the hardware on the Bently, because I like how it looks, dark, and mysterious. It may sound good. Any information you have will be helpful, and thanks. _______________________________________________________

I have turned down an Ovation, Ibanez and a Yamaha over this guitar. It is my favorite to play. It has an awesome sound to it probably will never get rid of it.

        Hello!

I am here to share my research as it seems a lot of people are searching for more information like myself.

I acquired mine for free, actually. I helped a man move and he gave it to me. I’ve seen others get them from garage sales and what not anywhere from 5-40$. At auction for 70$ and I’ve seen two online: one for 90$ and another for 150$ – The seller of that particular guitar said that he bought it new in Austin, TX new for around 320$.

This guitar was meant to be a cheaper alternative but its still an easy playing and great looking guitar. My electric function doesn’t work, need to check out why yet, but a fine guitar to have as a back up or practice guitar! The size of the body is conducive to my play style, its very unique in that way and worth every cent of the 0.00$ I spent on it just for that alone.

I cannot find a model no. on this guitar the serial no. is 2226 and it says it was made in Korea

It says series 10 by BENTLY on the head stock I bought this guitar in the mid 80s it still has the

of the music store where I bought it all of the comments I have seen on this website have said
nothing about a solid body Bently series 10 electric guitar if anyone knows anything about this
guitar or where Imight find the model no. I would greatly appreciate it there is a off and on switch
and two black knobs at the lower bottom and it is six strings I bought this guitar in the mid 80s
and it has never been played .

i picked up this six string for 5 BUCKS!!! got it a yard sale of course. But it is really beautiful. Unfortunately I am guitar illiterate, and am just now about to self school myself on how to play.(at the ripe old age of 49!! ha!) I am sure that I got a great deal on my guitar. I’m just not sure just HOW GOOD I don’t know. I just knew I had to have that pretty thing for 5 bucks!! Now I’ve got to learn how to play me some “Sweet Baby James”! (for you youngsters out there, that would be James Taylor.HA!) If anyone knows the true value of a 5106s in exellent condition, please let me know. Thanks. ROCK ON!!!

        1. I just picked up a Bently 5112 at a thrift store for $8 to use as a beater around the house, and for my grandson to play on, so I don’t have to worry about him nicking my good guitar. I am thinking the original value of mine was maybe $100 cause it has nice gear tuners. But I cannot find much out online. I was just gonna say that 49 is not too late to start playing. I am 60 and, tho I have been playing on and off since I was a kid, I am taking lessons now. It is so fun to be able to play. Keep at it and good luck.

I have a an old VS for which I can’t identify the year of manufacture. However, even tho I purchased it having had a repair to a neck break at the bottom of the peghead, this old spanish guitar rocks! Here’s the way I look at it. Your first reaction to ANY guitar should be the sound! How does it stack up to other guitars? Great sounding guitars sometimes go beyond price bounderies. It it is reasonable and you can afford it and it sounds great, buy it! Flaws are inconsequential to the player looking for quality sound!

I had one myself, and the nylon 6 strings guitar was a 1960’s model, handcrafted in Spain, ebony finguerboard.
Very nice guitar, sound and confortable to play. In my opinion, Vicente Sanchis was back in the days one of the best guitars made in Spain.

On the other hand, a 1980’s model I am not sure if this will be a massive production instrument or a custom hand made one.

      Phillip Hides

      Hi John,

I know it is some time since you posted, so if this reaches you well and good.

I purchased a Mountain in 1976 from a guitar shop in Brisbane. It’s a Martin D45 copy and I still have it.

The story I got at the time from the sales assistant was that these were made by Sigma Guitars in Japan, and that Sigma was owned by Martin. He also said that they were not hand made but were the best quality factory produced acoustic guitar on the market. I can vouch for the quality, but like you, have not been able to find out anything on the brand or verify what he told me. It’s the story I tell when ever anyone comments on my Mountain which sits beside my Fender Telecaster, Martin J65 and Washburn D60W for gig work.

People comment everywhere on its sound and appearance. If these guitars were just el cheapo knockoffs they would not have lasted so long let alone mature with age as they have.

I may never find out what I want, but I do know I have an excellent guitar.

      Steve Bolender

I also have a Mountain guitar. It’s a M-37 model. I found it used in San Diego. Interesting story but I won’t relate it just now. Sounds great to my ears and it’s beautiful for sure. Here is a description I found for the M-37 "Full-Bodied Acoustic With A Solid Spruce Top And Rosewood Sides And Back. A Rosewood Fretboard With White Shaped Inlays. The Body Has One Large Ding On Top Edge And Some Scratches, But Has A Great Feel And Tone." This is an ad for one I found online. From the image on the site it looks exactly like mine, but without the ding. The address is: http://www.freedomguitar.com/description.php?II=12554&UID=20070926190518160.33.43.65 in case you are interested.

    3. Re: Mountain Guitars
      Brian

They were distributed by "Music Imports Ltd." in San Diego. I have one in my shop for adjustment and that’s what the label says. It sounds pretty good and plays a lot like my HD-28. The top looks a little wavy, and the heel of the neck is starting to show a bit of a crack in the finish where it joins the body. Anyone can commission an overseas guitar builder to make a guitar brand with "your name here" and they mostly come from the same factories. So, an importer had a bunch of these made with the name "Mountain" on the headstock. There isn’t really a company by that name. I would never pay more than $500 for a guitar of this type, because the woods are not good quality, and the construction doesn’t warrant a higher price. You’d be better off saving a little more and buying a used Taylor or one of the inexpensive Martins now available. You get what you pay for. A used one of these for $200 (in good condition) would be an ok deal.

My Mountain Guitar also has San Diego Music Imports LTD it has a model number of M36 and also a serial number. I purchased it used at a guitar store somewhere in Southern California way back in 1993 with set of strings cheap case a tuner and a capo for 230 dollars. It is great! It’s traveled with me all over the place and my young boys sometimes rough around with it. It’s stood up is in great condition with no cracks. The sound is great according to my BF who’s a professional musician for whatever that’s worth but its soild and well constructed. And after owning it for 20 years I feel it was a great buy. Hope someone finds this info useful

I received a new Mountain M 38 as a gift in 1989. It was purchased in San Diego, probably at Guitar Trader. Probably made in Korea. It has a solid spruce top and I think laminate mahogany sides/back. Solidly built. It looks like a copy of a Martin D 18 or D 28. I’ve played it fairly consistently through the years. I recently gave it a little DIY overhaul, replacing the tuning heads, nut, saddle and bridge pins. I also took the time to set it up properly, which has improved the playability quite a bit. Some of the frets are getting worn, I’ll get to those eventually. It has a pretty decent sound, boomy bass and mellow treble, brighter with new strings. Good for fingerpicking and aggressive flatpicking. My Taylor sounds better overall, but this one is an excellent beater. I hope to still be playing it in another 25 years.

I have one of these, and bought it in San Diego back in 1983. Has an actual Martin spruce top on it and flower mother of pearl inlay on the fret board. Been sitting in the closet for almost a decade, but just got it refretted an refitted. Sounds great.

it seems hard to find info on mountain guitars. mine was bought by my father in brisbane australia in 72 and was traded for a clean swap of a 64 fender tele. man id swap that guitar for this mountain any day. she has a 3 peice rosewood back mahogany neck and mother of pearl inlays everywhere even around the bindings. an exceptional instrument and plays to this day like a dream. like others have said only getting better with age. i had an offer from a luthier for $8000 a few years ago but quickly turned it down as it is apart of me witch i will pass on to my son… i know that the japanese instruments pre1990 were made just as good or better than usa guitars of the same era. would love to know the history of these guitars. apparently they are rare as rocking horse shit.

I have a Mountain guitar (D-45 copy with Mountain written vertically and identical inlays around everything )with just the mention "made by hayashi" carved inside and "made in japan" sticker behind the head, which I bought (already second-hand) in 1975 (I was 14 then) … Now I’m … (forget about it) and it seems that I had beginner’s luck, as she is the folk guitar of my life. It plays better and better every year. I rarely found such a warm and deep tone on a folk guitar, and certainly not on new instruments (except maybe Taylor) . I actually had another one Mountain , this one a Gibson dove copy (the famous one with dove on the pickguard, used by the stones I believe )which I bought from a friend at the same time and offered to my brother. I remember that at that time in France you could find Mountain guitars even in some general stores -sounds crazy but true.
It seems to me that this company focused on making high-quality clones of famous guitars of that time (Gibson, guild, Martin … and doing so well that even sound was identiacl or even better.

No one seems to know anything about Mountain guitars – mine says established 1948 on the head so it seems like an actual company. Would love to know more as well.

I bought my Mountain here in Adelaide (South Australia) about 30 years ago – still using it and it does sound great – especially when I remember to put new strings on it !! A colleague who does a lots of gigs ( and knows her instruments) recently bought a Gibson "Hummingbird" acoustic – second hand – and brought it into work..As soon as I clapped eyes on it I saw what Mountain had cloned, so the post about mountain making copies of other popular makes rings true. Still a beautiful guitar and I still play it regularly (and I’m over 50 y.o)
              Cheers guys.

I got my 500D in Hawaii. It has the loudest cleanest sound of any acoustic I’ve ever heard. The neck is true and the three piece back and woodwork is beautiful.I’d never trade or sell this gem. I had a Gibson J45 and this thing kills it!

Does anyone know where I can find information on Mountain Guitars? I’ve heard they are a Japanese imitation of Martin guitars. Where does one go to get some insight on its construction / value?

On a whim, I thought I would see if there were any comments on Mountain guitars. I have found some interesting conversations about them and I will add my two cents. I bought a 12 string from Oxbow Music in Chapel Hill in the mid-80’s. I have a Martin D-18 and a Taylor 514ce which I mainly play but took the 12 string down the other day to play it. I have to say, it really is not that bad and the action is decent up to about the 5th fret. I believe I paid $200 for it back in the 80’s and am holding on to it just to fill the 12 string gap. It is definitely a Martin knock off with herring bone trim, grover tuners and spruce top. I have no idea if the Rosewood back and sides are solid or not but figure they are not. However, the sound is impressive and almost loud such that I have to temper the strumming. So, I have had this thing for over 30 years, the neck is still straight and it stays in tune once tuned up. I just have not played it very much but will break it out every now and then for songs like Change Partners, Peacefuly Easy Feeling and Hickory Wind. I will have to try others. ( I used to play Eagle and Hawk but the highs are just tooooo high these days. )
        Cheers

I have a C F Mountain WST 13 made in Japan. I purchased it from a friend because it is so easy to play and sounds beautiful. Even played by me as a fairly new player. I don’t see it listed anywhere on the net or on this blog. But it my favourite and definitely sound better than a Martin that he also has.

If you can get a c.f mountain – get one. I have bought two of these recently and they are amazing for the price you can currently get them. Still around £100- £200 for essentially a vintage Japanese guitar. Laminates, maybe – stable – therefore. The sound you get is far superior to anything you could buy new for £150. A few touches like bone additions or a Mitchel plate mate will make it a great guitar for such a low price.
Apparently there are rumours that Martin parts were being used by Mountain – I assume from Sigma? But who knows. I also think the Yamaha labels from the same period have a great following – again Japanese guitars, often using laminate – but the technique in building was far superior to mass produced instruments from different era’s and origins. One of mine even has a bit of a belly , which I’ve managed to reduce – but the action, with the belly is still 2-3mm at the 12 fret. Some have Brazilian rosewood bodies. If you can go for the higher numbers as going of some websites they essentially put better materials into them. I have a w120 and a w240 – the 120 is mahogany body (laminate I think – but haven’t looked in detail) and the 240 is brazilian rosewood and maple back again laminate – but it looks and plays as good as anything else I have and only cost £170. I wouldn’t sell it for less that £1 million. In keeping with the appreciation of similar Martin, Gibson and – Kalamazoo?!??!?! Another manufacturer to look for if you can get them is Morris – these go for a bit more, but still can be found around £300 – the next step up is Yairi – £1k.

I was looking for a decent smallish bodied acoustic for my niece as she had moved beyond what she could do on a £5 junk shop classic. On ebay (UK) I saw a Mountain guitar which was an obvious lawsuit era Martin copy of what looks like a 000. Not much bidding, so I kept an eye on it as it was made in Japan in the 70s, and the seller said it had lovely tone, low action and solid spruce top. I bought it for £122, in June 2016, having never seen or heard it. Another reason was it was in Ludlow, where my niece lives, and my brother could collect it – at a Parent teacher meeting as it turns out, his daughter and my niece were in the same school!

When I got up to Ludlow to have a play on
it, I couldn’t believe the tone and playability. Really sweet and loud, with good separation
and sustain. For her Christmas present in 2017, I took it with me to Cardiff, where I know a
good luthier (Dave Dearnely, if you ever need one). He put a nice set of Grover open tuners on
it, and bone nut, saddle and bridge pins. It’s now a amazing sounding guitar. I’ve got some
pretty expensive guitars, but the only one that I think is better is a Santa Cruz 00 shape with
Brazilian rosewood and Engelman spruce, made by Richard Hoover himself. Now that would cost £5
-6K. And all for a total outlay of £222. I’ve lent my niece a nice small guitar with pickup and
amp in the meantime, but I’ll have to give it back to her one day! Oh well…….

I don’t know how to attach photos on this site, but if anyone is interested I could email them.

I too have a Mountain and according to the label inside it is a Model: K190J Serial Number: 00922. I bought it in the mid eighties for around $400.00 Cdn. It looks and sounds great. It has mother of pearl inlay along the fretboard and Mountain done in an arch on the head also in mother of pearl. All brass fittings, in a blonde style. It sounds great even after all these years.

        1. C.F.Mountain

I bought a C.F. Mountain from Goodwill of Nashville. It is best described as a OOO-18 knockoff. I bought it to practice repair and have a playable beater guitar that I could leave in the music room in the Church where I play. I have a real D-28, Harptones, and other good guitars that I don’t care to leave somewhere.
The soundboard was entirely covered in red fingernail polish! I sanded that off, and saw that someone had previously sanded through the top layer of laminate in two places, covering their misdeeds with the red guck. I replaced the tuners with good Grovers, refinished the top, and compensated the saddle. I then fitted it with a Seymour Duncan woody pickup. The results were surprising to say the least! It actually sounds far better that it has a right to. I think that sanding all that stuff (and a bit of wood) off the soundboard made the top thinner, and it is louder and more responsive. That’s my story, anyway. The present saddle is of the wrong curvature, so I will replace it soon.

And the work was worth it to see the look on other guitarists faces when I point out the “C.F. Mountain &” logo.

I bought one of those about a year ago (full story in my post of 17 Feb 2018). Grovers, bone nut, saddle and bridge pins, and it’s at least as good as a Martin!

      10. C F Mountain

I agree with the comments made about these Martin copies!
I have a W230 which has a solid spruce top and rosewood back and sides, it’s well used and looks it! But it sounds brilliant
with a deep bass and sweet treble. It has the original nickel tuners but had to change the buttons which are now made of an ivory lookalike plastic from China, the neck appears to be maple and has a super profile making it very comfortable to play. The build has stood the test of time with no bellying of the top or any sign of separation of the neck/body joint.
I refretted it a couple of years ago which took a little longer than normal because of the bound fingerboard. It has a serial no.53.1.27 stamped inside on the neck block!
If you find one of these hang onto it as they seem to be pretty rare now.

        1. Hi, do you still have your W230? I have bought a rather poor one that someone tried to make look like a Martin. I’m trying to get a good photo of the original label. Mine has been ripped off and covered with a rather unconvincing Martin D28 one.

I have a Mountain guitar that has a W400 number on it. It is a large dreadnought and appears to be a knock off of a Martin D35. It has an awesome large sound with great tone and sustain. I had a 1969 Gibson J45 that was stolen in the late 80’s. The Mountain sounds as clear and has a bigger sound than the Gibson. I am totally happy with this guitar. I have not played a Martin, but have heard a few played and I would put the Mountain right up there with both the Martin and the Gibson. I have been told that the luthier Momose was the person who built this instrument I am trying to find out more about the man and the guitar. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      14. I have a Mountain M400 that I bought in the early 90’s in Los Angeles. It was hanging in a small music store and I was told it was the last that the owner had bought some 10 years earlier. It appears to be modeled almost exactly from a Martin D-35 on all points except the pearl inlays that are identical to the D-45. I have had a luthier do a fret job on it recently and it now plays better, louder and cleaner than any other of my 6 acoustic guitars including a Martin. I have played mid70’s D35’s in vintage shops and any difference between the two goes to the mountain for having more punch… Which says a lot..

About 3 or 4 years ago, a cousin who is a frequent traveler from japan brought back with him an old looking acoustic guitar. He called me up and told me that he is going to give me a guitar made in Japan. I thought that its a brand new guitar. But i was almost dismayed because he is giving me and old guitar which looked so wasted. I cleaned it up and bought new sets of strings.

I was surprised when i heard the sound. Loud from afar and just loud enough for the player. The engraving says: CFMOUNTAINE – EST.1949

I bought my Mountain Guitar in Fresno, CA in the mid-1980s. The sticker on the neck says “Made in Korea”. In the late 1990s I lived in South Korea for a while and was looking for a new guitar. With a friend, we went to a guitar store/market that made Cort guitars. I talked to the guitar maker there and he knew about the Mountain Guitar brand and said it was related to Cort…can’t remember the details of the conversation – wish I had paid more attention. It’s the best full sounding guitar I’ve heard –

Follow-up to my post on 11/05/2012.

Chris Kinman here. I found Mountain Guitars during a visit to Japan in 1974, I was half owner of Sound Stage at the time. We thought so highly of those guitars we imported them for the next few years until the demise of the company in the late 70’s due to financial stress.

I don’t know who the manufacturer was because in those days makers sold their products only through Export Agents who had English language skills and it was through one such agent that we procured our supplies. I seem to recall they might have been made by Matsumoka but I’m not sure after all these years.

We imported many different models, some less expensive with laminated tops, backs and side and some top of the range with solid spruce tops with laminated backs and sides and one or two with solid backs and sides. I don’t know much more about them that that.

It’s good to hear you are still enjoying you Mountain guitar in 2012, it seems I was a good judge of quality in 1974.

        Regards, Chris Kinman

          Hi Chris,
I remember Sound Stage! I bought a Mountain in there in 1976. You gave me 10% discount because I was a friend of Sean Mee who took me in there to buy a good guitar (I had been saving for a while). It cost $250 which was over 2 weeks wages then but I kept it for 38 years before I gave it to my niece’s son who was showing great promise as a guitarist. 37 years in the tropics didn’t do it any favours (even though it was always stored well) but if was a fantastic guitar and still has a great sound. He plays it all the time and loves it.

I have a Mountain Dreadnought style acoustic that I bought in Brisbane in about 1976 from a musical instrument store (name long-forgotten) which was co-owned (I believe) by Chris Kinman, who went on to be one of the best luthiers around and for some years has made and sold high-quality pick-ups (mainly for Fenders). I recall that Chris personally selected all guitars they imported. Mine is, I believe, a Japanese made Gibson Dove copy – down to the scratch-plate shape and design of all inlays, except that there are no inlays on the scratch-plate. Like the Dove, construction is Spruce top (possibly ply), book-matched Maple back, Maple sides, Mahogany (with truss-rod) neck. It is fully bound. Being a ‘blonde’ guitar, its colour has aged to a beautiful gold. It has always had a lovely bright sound, typical of the woods used, and has always had a great, fast action – well suited to electric guitar players. The name ‘Mountain Guitar’ is embossed on the inside-back directly under the sound-hole and the word ‘Mountain’ is inlayed in mother-of-pearl, in a semi-circle, on the head-stock, where the Gibson name would normally appear. It has had many admirers over the years – for its look and its sound. I recall it cost me about $200 which, for its time, was quite expensive for an unknown brand acoustic. In hindsite – a great buy.

My specific CF Mountain acoustic guitar is a beautiful example of the fabulous “copy” of the CF Martin D35-D45 model. Actually I bought my “Mountain” at Jim’s Guitar Shop in San Diego, CA. It had the best sound of all the displayed guitars (and there were many) in the entire store…strong mellow and very pleasing. I’ve kept it all these years since the mid-1980’s even though I never took to learning all that well. It’s one of my “investments” which will not lose value…but gain in appreciation in value and quality. Made in Japan as I recall to compete with CF Martin (overpriced) but very good guitars. I’ve even compared mine to comparable ones at the Breedlove factory in Bend, OR and I’d rather have my CF Mountain…by far.

I got mine at Jim’s Guitar Shop in San Diego too! I’ve played it daily for over 30 years. It’s a terrific guitar. The sustain is unbeatable. The only work I’ve had done is a new bridge saddle and action adjustment. I’ll finish writing now and go play it some more. Enjoy your Mountains everyone!!

I just invested $200 for a case to protect mine. The fact that everything is in perfect working order is a testament to the build quality. After nearly 50 years it sounding beautiful with warmth, depth, clarity and sustain. My mother found it for $20 Australian. It’s Rosewood and spruce and neck looks mahogany.
Only acoustic people can understand the quality and sound is comparable to much higher priced instruments

Winston – I found your post purely by accident after I googled ‘Mountain Guitars’ just for kicks. I have a six string accoustic I also bought at Jim’s House of Guitars in San Diego (still havea couple business cards in the case) in June of ’86. As it was a gift I couldn’t bear to part with it, but like you, I haven’t really learned to play it. I’ve had a few other people play it a bit, and like you said, the sound is incredible. Inside on the paper tag it says ‘M 37’, so I’m assuming that’s a model number. Since it is cased all the time it’s in pristine condition. I keep promising myself I’ll learn to play it, but then the ADHD kicks in. Tomorrow, I’ll do it tomorrow….

Funny as I also have a Mountain M37 I got from Jim’s House of Guitars in San Diego in the 80s. I was assistant manager of the store at the time. I was going to buy a Martin and Jim told me to try the Mountain and I loved it. I still have it and its still in great shape. Only thing I have done is add a bone nut. Awesome guitar.

Interesting comment by you Michael. Sorry it’s taken me til now to revisit this site (3/3/2015). The “M37” is likely the comparable to a similar Martin acoustic model. Actually, today I took my CF Mountain W400D model to a local guitar and piano store in Boise, Idaho for a valuation. The owner said (after perusing various websites on the CF Mountain acoustic guitar comments and background information), “after reviewing the history of the CF Mountain copies of the Martin guitars, and settlements of the infringement lawsuits back in the 1970’s or so, this guitar is a solid wood (no lamination) and so very well made that it is considered “RARE” and a collector’s dream; I’d hold onto it as a heirloom quality.” He found a British valuation in “Pounds” which was about PD 799 or US dollar equivalent = $1220. Not a bad investment. Funny you said, “ADHD”, same here as I get easily distracted and learning to play was a huge issue, not to mention my shorter stubby fingers. LOL

Not all Greco guitars were made in Japan. Before about 1965 or so Greco’s were made in the US or Europe. The logo on the headstock of non-Japanese Greco’s looked like it said GNECO, but the N is really a styalized R. I have a non-Japanese Greco 4 string Bass. Information of these early Greco’s is hard to find. Early Greco guitars were sold by a company in New York City. Hope this helps.

MAde in Japan most likley in 60’s-70’s(I’ve got a ’78 Ric 4001 copy) in MATSUMOKU (I think thats right –Matsumuko??) Factory- which was eventually bought by Fender & became Fender Japan- apparently as they were making SUCH great basses etc thay The Major USA co’s were not having a bar of that- so they bought it ’emselves!! So I’ve heard.
Ibanez, Greco, Tokai, & a few other names were used!
          AFAIK.

Hi, I had the same situation, I have a GRECO guitar, a copy fro IBANEZ ICEMAN, it’s just great, it has an wanderfull quallity. the information i have is that it was a instruments Factory in Japan, the made instruments for Gibson and Ibanez, Ibanez used GRECO as a trade mark to oriental market, an other name to Europe.
Please send me information (pictures, comments) if you find something. I have seen a GIBSON Les poul, very nice finish and just the same as an original. I’m in Dominican Republic (caribbean near Cuba and Puerto Rico.) it’s a long ride from Japan.

Hope to have news from you soon.

  26. Fender Heartfield RR9 info request
    James Raynor

Hi! I’m looking for info on a Heartfield RR9 guitar I bought used about a year ago. I remember finding a website with some info on these guitars a while ago, but it seems to have disappeared. The one I have is a dark blue with brighter blue metallic fleck finish and a pearloid pickgaurd. Anybody have one for sale? I’d like a matching pair. Thanks, James.

        Paul

Let me know if you ever want to sell yours. these were made from ’89 to ’93. Ibanez made them for Fender back then.

: Hello, I have a black one with a pearl pickguard that I bought about 10 years ago. Do you know how to tell from the serial number how old it is?
