Back in June 1978, I was given a Suzuki 12 string guitar F-180 for my 18th birthday. I found the receipt for it, she paid $180 . I put that poor thing through hell, for most of the 80’s and 90’s and then finally in 1997 i put it down for a while. Blink of an eye later,,,20 years later I get the itch and pull it out. I Play way different now days, put her in OPEN D tuning and MY MIND IS COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY!! It always was brighter than others in the room, but now in open tuning it feels perfect! This guitar means the world to me, I will never part with her. Thanks for reading. Peace.

I have a six string classical guitar that has been in our family for 30 years. It has a solid cedar top, rosewood sides, and back a lovely inlaid rossette and plays beautifully. The lable inside says Kiso Suzuki Violin Company. It is Model 70. In additional information would be welcome.

Great to hear about other Suzuki guitar owners out there. I have a model W-30A 6 string that I bought in 1981. It has a violin finish and dreadnought body. Was my "battle axe" for over ten years and still plays and sounds awesome. In 1992 I purchased another Suzuki 6 string model W-35. It has a maple front, abalone inlays and a three piece back and is also a dread. I have owner several other guitars over the past twenty years but have always stuck with the Suzukis. I love the sound, the playability and the feel. Great guitars. I too am looking for information on the value, on replacement parts and whether or not the company is still in business so that I might buy a new one. I, too, have been unable to find any information on the net for these companies. I say "these" because my first one is a Suzuki 3S that was made by the Suzuki Violin Company (est.1887) and my next one was made by the Kiso Suzuki Violin Company Ltd. I found out during the 1980’s that the Kiso was manufactured by the grandson of the founder of the Suzuki Violin Co. Since then this is all the information that I have been able to gather. If you are interested in selling your 3S 12-string I am very interested in purchasing it. Please stay in touch.

        Peace,
        Chris

I recently puchased an F-180 for $45 AUS. I took it to Merve & James Cargill, renouned guitar craftsman, and spent $150 AUS getting it straitened out. James estimated that is was worth about $500 AUS. More if in very good condition. Mine is is a little bowed at the body because it was left strung in a workshop for about eight years.

I was given a Suzuki Three-S made by Suzuki Violin Company that says F-200 on the inside. Like others who have written, I ahve no idea of the value or age of the guitar, but it is beautifully made and sounds wonderful. The volume of this guitar is extraordinary. Would appreciate any info anyone has about these guitars.

      1. Suzuki 3S or "Three S"
        Walt Frazier

I recently repaired one–needed tuners and some work on the neck. The guitar is laminated (this one in the 70’s?) but back then laminates were often favored because they are more resistant to problems with atmospheric change (that is humidity/dry air).

I was blown away by the sound the instrument produced…tones were solid and the volume was amazing.

Yes the six string version is exactly a visual match to the D-28 Martin.

I have seen some 12-strings; but I don’t know many who play these instruments today. So, I have no idea what they are worth.

Suzuki ended there guitar business — not exactly sure when — and stuck with their role as the largest maker of violins in the world.

I am looking a 12-string but can’t put a price on it. Any help is appreciated.

I have just purchased an EKO Ranger for $273. It sounds great and has a pick-up fitted over the sound hole. I would like to find out if they came from the factory that way, or if the pick-up was installed after market.

    1. Re: Conrad LP copy
      jeff

I have just bought a Conrad copy of the hollow bodied es350 copy myself. a little research shows it is a japanese import, the Conrad name was trademarked to the american importers. All the looking i have done puts a pretty low value on it, 200 to 350 but the thing shounds good. And that is what i was after. I have considered ripping off the neck and finding an epiphone or Gibson neck for it, and swapping the pick ups for some humbuckers , but it do sound good, so, hmm, why mess with it. (i did have to tighten all the pots which are pretty small and i suspect not of very great quality) the head stock on mine is a pretty ugly shape, and it has all this weird reddish laminated plastic throughout, but it still sounds good, heheh,
The Conrad trademark was a brand name used by U.S. importers David Wexler and Company of Chicago, Illinois. The Conrad product line consisted of 6- and 12-string acoustic guitars, thinline hollowbody electrics, solid body electric guitars and basses, mandolins, and banjos. Conrad instruments were produced by Kasuga International (Kasuga and Tokai USA, Inc.), and featured good quality designs specifically based on popular American designs.

I recently bought a second hand 12 string guitar, it’s a fine example of good workmanship, it’s made by K and that’s all I know, it has crushed pearl insets, my question is, "is K any good, I think it is because of this lovely guitar, I would just like to know if it was a good buy as I can’t seem to find anything to do with K on the net".

Hello, and thanks for your interesting pages. A good friend just bought a nice playing guitar, a large light colored, dark backed "flat top", guitar, and is curious as to who "Jantz" is. That name is at the tuning end – looks like their "Logo", where you would find, "Martin", or "Gibson", on other guitars. Can you help me find some info on such a company ?

    1. Re: HYAK BASS GUITARS
      Paul Klouse

Hyak Guitars was formed by two engineers, one chemical, one electronic, from the Seattle / bellevue area of Washington. Production each unit was handmade, even the pickups (my college girl friend wound pickups for them). One of the founders was Harry Mathewson. I can’t remember the other. As you said, the bodies were laminated solids, with the "black pickup, natural laminated body" look. As far as I remember, this style was originated by Hyak, not Alembic.I haven’t seen one in years.Hope this helps.
: According to my sources; HYAK was formed by a former employee of ALembic in the late 70’s. The company lasted about a year making some 100+ basses and guitars. The basses were influenced by Alembic with mult-laminated necks and bodies, active electronics. Has anyone heard of them? If yes, do you know anyone who has a bass for sale?

Hello, I am looking for more information on Hyak guitars. About 8 years ago my best friend a lawyer, passed away
and I was given a Hyak bass guitar. At that time my research led me to Alembic. I went there and toured their facility
and was told that the guitar was made by a former employee Brian Smith. My understanding is that their was about
100 made and that mine was in excellent shape. My friend’s wife gave me the guitar, their son is now going to college
and I am trying to find out the guitars worth. I was given an approximate value then and I’m sure that value has changed
and it’s now time to sell. I want to give the proceed’s to their son’s college education. So, with that said, can you help
me with where do I go to sell this guitar and find the value. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you, Bobby

    Mister Anytime

I see that others have questions about them, too, so I thought I would pile on. I just inherited an EKO model E85 (the label inside the body has that stamped on it) that is at least 20 years old, and it is in decent condition. It sounds nice enough, but the cosmetics are lacking. It originally had two pickguards, but both are missing. Any idea how I can replace them? I’m not too hopeful. Also, anyone ever heard of this model and have more information as to how to have it appraised?
Thanks very much, and God bless.

            1. Eko E85 original matching set of pickguards - mint
              Dave

              Hi folks.

I have a spectacular 1980 E85 that I bought new. Hated the double pickguards so I carefully removed and stored them. They are the original matched set in perfect condition. I’m open to offers if someone needs them and they wouldn’t cost much to ship anywhere in the world.

I said mine is spectacular because of the work I’ve done on it over the years and having done now. Years ago I had the neck reset and at the same time had it thinned and V’d, similar to what you can order for a Martin guitar. I’ve replaced the nut with a nice unbleached one and last year replaced the tuners with new gold plated Grover Imperials which look fantastic on this large size headstock. I’m having the bridge removed, filled in and a new wide unbleached bone bridge installed with the correct intonation carved into it. The original plastic pins are also being replaced with new unbleached bone ones, with the black dot in the centre. This new setup is to make the bridge optimal for installation of the LR Baggs Anthem pickup/microphone combo system. I string this with D’Addario Flat Top Extra-lights and with this guitar’s low action and wider, thinned and V’d neck, is a fingerpicker’s dream set up. I’m going to be playing it through a beautiful Ultrasound AG 100DS2, a rather incredible acoustic amplifier I’ve been using for my ’95 Ovation Folklore.

Years back I took this Eko to the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society convention in Nashville and every pro player I had play it said it had the best feel and action of any guitar they’d seen. Several of them borrowed it to conduct on-stage workshops as well as for performances. It was quite a hit!

I hope someone can use these pickguards and perhaps my story of modifications I’ve had done to my guitar will inspire another player to do this for their E85, as they’re worth the trouble.

              Cheers,
              Dave….from Canada

                Hi Dave,

I have just inherited an Eko E85 from my late Uncle, it plays a treat and looks great, bar the missing Double Pick Guards.

I would love to see photos of what you have done to your Eko E85 (and the pickguards too).

The machine heads on mine will definitely be the next replacement and the pins too.

I would definitely be interested in buying your unwanted ones. I live in Ireland, if you want to email me directly, we can get the ball rolling.

I own an Eko E85 accoustic guitar in very good condition and would like to sell it. Unfortunately, I have no idea about it”s value. I was told by one dealer about £250 and another dealer told me it was a limited edition, hence all the mother of pearl and gold plating, not many around and worth between £1200 to £2000 depending on condition. I remember paying about £109 in the early 80″s which was quite a lot of money then. Can you help?

  10. Vantage Guitars - are they no longer making guitars?
    Stephan Williams

I have a "strat" copy, made by Vantage in the late 70’s or early 80’s. It was made with a one piece neck through the body with all brass hardware. The saddles are starting to wear out (no kidding!) and I would like to replace them with the original equipment if possible. Anybody have any ideas? I haven’t had much luck getting any answers so far. Thanks in advance.

I own a black and white vantage guitar………no idea what year, what model, original price. I bought it cheap off a friend who wanted to get rid of it. His uncle gave it to him. The strange thing about it is that someone signed it in gold permanent ink, an i can’t tell what the name is. I doubt it’s worth anything but there is that slight chance. Really, this thing is a piece of junk, the pickups and plug are falling apart and its nicked up a little. It sounds terrible. I don’t know what I’ve got on my hands an just hoping anyone can give me any info about where to get more info on vantages…. -Jordan

hi i have a question you might be able to answere, you see about three years ago i baught one of you Vantage Bass Guitars, and not long after i baught it i noticed a number printed on the back of the head of the guitar, it is: 012051, i have no idea what it means, it just made me wonder, could you tell me what that number means if you can that would be great, it’s a bass guitar, solid wooden body and neck, neck goes all the way through the body, four pick-ups, 6 switches, all in all it is the best guitar i have in the house. thanks

        1. hi there fellow guitarists…i own a faded black and orange vantage guitar..it seems like it sounds great but when you play it some distractions come unto you..the sound suddenly dissapear when you hit the metal thing on the center of it..im so stupid that i bought this guitar..hehe

        2. Re: Vantage Guitars - i have a question that you might be able to answere
          matt

I also own a Vantage electric guitar… The only number on the whole thing is it’s serial number – except that on mine it’s on the metal plate backing where the neck joins the head.

        1. Vantage acoustic
          depp604

I bought a Vantage model VA28 , made in Japan with hardshell case back in the mid 80’s.The last time I played it was around 20 years ago, then I put it in storage. I took it out to-day, put new strings on it and was pleasantly surprised at the tone, and how easy the neck was to play on.

I think I payed around $200 – 250 for it. I was going to sell it but I am reconsidering depending on it’s value. Does anyone know how to price it.

HI THERE! I’VE GOT ONE VANTAGE GUITAR AND IT SEEMS IT HAS A PROBLEM: WHENEVER I’M NOT TOUCHING ITS METAL PARTS( STRINGS, TREMOLLO, KEYS A.S.O.) IT MAKES A BROOM SOUND.WHEN I TOUCH THE STRINGS OR THE TREMOLLO THE BROOM IS NO LONGER THERE. I TRIED TO OPEN THE GUITAR TO SEE IF THE CABLES INSIDE IT ARE ALRIGHT AND THEY ARE. WHAT IS THERE TO BE DONE. HELP ME OUT HERE… THANKS!

      1. Re: vantage electric guitar problem
        garry

The problem is either in the jack(as stated in another reply) or, your amp or part of the speaker set up for it (if you dont have a combined amp) has a bad ground connection. Try the guitar in another amp.

      2. Re: vantage electric guitar problem
        chris

sounds like you have a bad ground somewhere. most grounds go to the vol. pot. check what metal parts stop the noise when touched. its probably a bad ground on the jack or switch. if the strings also stop the noise when touched, then the bridge needs to be grounded. its actualy simple to fix.

        1. Re: vantage electric guitar problem
          alex

about that ground thing.. my guitar does the oppisite. the guitar isnt noisy UNTILL i touch the strings. what does that mean?

The saddles are starting to wear out (no kidding!) and I would like to replace them with the original equipment if possible. Anybody have any ideas? I haven’t had much luck getting any answers so far. Thanks in advance.

Vantage guitars are made by Samick now. Vantage is a division of Samick.

Hi there, I´ve got a red Zero Sette that you wrote about.
I found it at a second hand market in stockholm, and it costed me 400 swedish kronor.

The tailpice and pickguard is missing, and the microfones aren´t so good either. I´m not planning on selling this one,
but if you give me an offer I can´t refuse….

Im no expert, but i came across this site while looking at tanglewoods myself. I dont know if this helps you, but the finishes avaliable to the rebel 4k are:black, red and blue. these are what they call ‘see thru’ finishes, basically u see the wood grain through the coloured finish. About the pickups, all i know is its a jazz/p-bass config. this includes a jazz style bridge pickup, and a split p-bass setup. Dunno about the quality, but i have this config on my bass, and you can get a wide variety of styles and tones out of it. I know its not much but i hope it helps. Happy bass playing!

Eko’s were made in Italy in the 60’s. Your fathers’ guitar is definitely not 50 years old, for several reasons. One being that the first electric guitars were just beginning to be produced about fifty years ago by Fender. Second, Eko’s just aren’t that old. I’ve heard that there are some Eko collectors, but I don’t know where any of them are. I wish that I did, I have an Eko 12-string acoustic that has what is apparently a factory-fitted pickup in the soundhole. At any rate, Eko aren’t worth a fortune or anything, so don’t get too excited. Hope that this helps.

: I bought a Black Maya Les Paul copy off ebay. It has "Les Paul Custom" on the truss rod cover, but i doubt that it is the original cover. The Machine heads have been replaced and is as beat up as, i probably payed to much as it needs a fret file ($230 AU), but this thing sounds unbelievable. In fact i have not pluged it into my jcm 800 yet (due to my jcm 800 needing a new input socket) and have just played it through a small crappy $50 amp and i already know it is a better sound than any of my other guitars! It has got the tone!
The guy that i bought it off seem to think that it was out of the ibanez factory, but i don’t know as there is bugger all information on it. The only thing disapointing about this guitar is most of the fretboard inlays are not quite square with the frets, but the bindings are perfect. I will keep looking for more info and will post any that i find. Sim.

        Keith Meredith

        Hi
I bought an El Maya EM 1500 Guitar in 1975 from a shop in Bristol UK and I have to say its been the best guitar i have ever owned used, I am a professional singer guitar player playing for over 40 years and i still use it every day its been gigged all over Europe although looking a bit tired now it plays and sounds like the day i bought it
The guitar has active electronics that must have been new technology in those days it gives you all the tone variation you could want it sounds superb.
I have retired the guitar many times in 35 years changing to Fender,Gibson and many others I own a Fender Strat and a Telecaster but nothing that i have played can touch the EL Maya , my big fear is that the electronics will fail one day and the parts may not be available but the chances are Ill be dead before that.
If there are other El Maya fans out there please contact me.
        Thanks Keith.

        1. Hi Keith, I have an El Maya through neck strat, bought it second hand in the 90’s. It isn’t fitted with a scratch plate and has three micro switches as opposed to the normal strat 5 way switch. It’s a hard tail model, all hardware is brass including the nut. The finish is absolutely beautiful as is the wood. The pups can be selected out of phase through the micro switching.

The guitar hasn’t been used much by me, and I don’t think the last owner did either. There is barley any wear of the frets or fretboard.

I’m in my late sixties and content myself playing my acoustic or battered telecaster, so if you know anyone interested in this gorgeous El Maya, please drop me a line.

          Kind regards
          David

        2. I own an ELMAYA EM-1200
          cyrille

          Hi Keith,
I live in France,I recently acquired an EL-MAYA EM-1200, and I must say it has raised great expectations: as is, the sustain is unbelievable, even with 15 year-old strings. I re-strung the guitar with what I had just at hand, I put a set of strings that are obviously to light for what this wonderfull player can take (9-42). I guess I’d better go with a set of 10s.

I’ve owned a number of medium to high end guitars over the past 30 years, and I’ve recently developped a special taste for Gretsch guitars. But I must say that this one is the most pleasant neck I’ve ever put my hands on. It is just incredible.

Concerning the sound, the original DImarzio copies had been replaced by the previous owner. So I did the soldering job to have it as close as possible to the original. The pots are extremely reactive, I mean you get get a large range of sounds just with a slight tweak. Yet I feel these humbuckers do not do justice to the overall quality of the guitar, they lack definition. I am mostly a clean sound player now (I play mostly jazz, funk, rockabilly).
Right now, I ‘m considering a pickup replacement because I’d like to make it my main solid-body.
I had an old LP a few years ago, and the El maya compares well with it. The neck shape is even more pleasant.

I was happy to read your post and to see I’m not the only one in the world to rave about this rare guitar make.

          Cheers

          Cyrille D

        sami

        Greetings from Finland!

I have a black/cream coloured El Maya EM-1000, it’s one of the best guitars I’ve ever tried. I paid 500 FIM (about 85 USD) for it. That’s been a great surprise for many people, they have thought my guitar would been cost at least six, even ten times more. Just because it’s very good and easy to play… I’ve tried a 1500 USD Modulus (I was told it’s real state of the art -guitar) but found my El Maya much better.

EM-1000 has cutaways in both sides of the neck-body joint (bolt-on neck with rosewood fingerboard and pearl dot inlays) and also a cutaway in the end of body. Bridge is Fender-style fixed bridge with brass bits, strings go through the body. Two pick-ups are both original, humbuckers without metal shields. Sound is just great, much of bottom but bright and airy with enough output to get distortion more than I will ever need. Real multi-purpose guitar, I’ll always find a right sound for all styles I play.

Shape of the body makes EM-1000 perfect to play when I sit, but it’s also balanced correctly for stand-up playing.

But nothing’s perfect. Neck is not properly assembled, it’s about 1/8 inches too close to the bridge! Some worker of the Kobe factory been celebrating too much during the weekend? Just joking… Frame of the neck pick-up is bent and I had to cut the spring of 6th bridge bit to make enough room for setting up intonation. Not so big troubles, I still love my El Maya.

And something almost off-topic. The only band I’ve seen to play with El Maya is Finnish girl rock group called "Thee Ultra Bimboos" (I think it’s only famous in the Europe). Their guitarist have an instrument similar to mine (might be EM-1200, I’m not sure) and even their bassist have El Maya. Almost same body shape and look as EM-1000 has, but only four strings tuned octave down…

I have a MAYA FRETLESS BASS GUITAR. I would like to find out what year it is and a rough idea of it’s value as I would like to sell it. It is a brilliant guitar and I’m reluctant to part with it, but sadly I must.
If there’s anyone out there interested in buying it (I’m in the United Kingdom, South Wales).

: I’ve got a Maya accoustic that I bought from a friend almost 20 years ago when he was strapped for cash. I don’t know much about guitars and my dog plays better than I do, but in my opinion, the Maya is by far the best accoustic I ever played – great tone, great action – I love it.

Well, I bought a 3/4 size Maya Flying V for my son about 25 years ago! It has a single humbucker, one volume pot, no tone controls and it looks, plays and sounds great! It cost about £100 GBP in the 1970s and came with a brown leather fitted gigbag. The guitar body is black with a white pickguard, it looks like a rosewood neck. My 6 year-old granddaughter started learning on it last week!

Can anyone help me with some recognition, perhaps a picture or some info? I look at it and wonder, just how much of a bargain was it!

Hi Yes El Maya was the top of the range handbuilt guitars from this company and are in the opinion of many far and away superior to any Gibson,PRS or Fender of today. I have an El Maya EM1200 in abolone (Mother of Pearl)inlay and naughty 1970’s ivory bound fully body and neck and headstock – it plays like no other guitar I have ever had the chance to play upon. I wouldn’t sell it though for the world.
El Maya was made between c. 1970 until 1995 when the earthquake hit the city. I am trying to get more details from the Japanese government and local Japanese guitar clubs – will let you know how I get on.

              Hi

I bought my El Maya Les Paul Custom with a Sunburst finish new in 1979 new much has changed in my life but this Guitar has stayed with me throughout. I Have a Fender Strat which now gets used more than the LP as I am afraid to damage it as it is still mint with virtually no damage.

The sound is on the LP is beautiful and the action as good as any Gibson origonal I have played

I wouldnt sell it for any money it truly is a great Guitar

Like many getting information about the guitar is difficult and would love to get feed back from anyone who has any information about where and by who it was made

It sounds great plays great and the sun burst finish is beautiful I will not sell it.
Anyone out there can give me some history not bothered about price but just would like to know more about the guitars history

This is a unique instrument i own, a El Maya SG (as described on your text), made in the early seventies, (1970 – 1974), an original El Maya. Its tone is PERFECT. And as many guitar-tech friends of mine said: it’s BETTER than a Gibson. I consider selling it or trading it for an Ibanez, Vai model.

                david

Hi, I have a beautiful El Maya fixed neck Strat. All hardware is brass, the body, neck and fret board is in excellent condition. There is no ware to the frets or board as this has only been played occasionally. The three pups are selected through three micro switches that can be selected out of phase if required, giving lots of different sounds and tones. Let me know if you’re interested.

                regards David

I’ve got a Maya. It’s a copy of a Gibson Marauder. Beautiful burgundy finish. The body is made of really thick, heavy wood (pretty good sustain) the neck is real smooth. that’s about all the info i have.:

: I have a Maya semi acoustic based on a Gibson E-175. My father brought it back from the middle-east (Saudi Arabia) in the mid-80s. Generally a nice guitar in terms of construction although p-ups, machine heads are pretty cheap but work OK. No idea what happened to the company, they were never big here in the UK but the guy at my local guitar shop remembers them (but not with any great affection). It would be interesting to find out more about the company and range of instruments they made in their hey-day.

: I have got a Maya Les Paul copy. But like you trying to find stuff out about Maya has not yielded much information. At the moment it is minus strings and bridges as I have only recently started learning to play on an acoustic. The plan is to get it fixed when I can play more than 3 chords!!
A guy at a local guitar shop in Bristol (England) had heard of Maya when I made initial enquiries about getting it fixed however I didn’t have it with me when I went in, so he was a bit non-commital. I will go and see him again soon and if I can get any more info I will let you know.

Not much – I’m trying to find info myself. They made good quality copies of Les Paul and others.

I have an El Maya carved top, through-neck two-pickup electric which was (allegedly) hand made at
the factory as a one-off for the 198? Frankfurt Music Festival. It plays really well with huge sustain.

      Good luck in your quest.

in the bay area. One real goodie was their attempt at the serious guitar market with the El Maya EM-1200 (I bought one in Singapore circa 1983). As stated, a carved top, through neck, dual humbucker pickup axe with great sustain
and some classy looks. Two cutaways in front and one in the back to keep it from looking too much like a Gibson. Nice Mother Of Pearl inlay too! I once saw the same body design on an Ibanez "Musician" guitar don’t know the model. Pics on request.

Not much – I’m trying to find info myself. They made good quality copies of Les Paul and others.

      : i have an eko guitar…acoustic/electric…modello 100.
: any info on this???? year??? value???
      : please e-mail

I can tell you that is a mid 60’s EKO. They were quite a pricey guitar for their time. EKO’s were imported
from Italy. The EKO slogan of the time was "EKO, the Italian Dream".
depending on the condition, you could be looking at a current value of $250-750.
Good to very good condition…~$600. Poor condition…~$300. You have a very cool guitar…Hang on to it.
      EKO Rocks!

I bought it new about 1964 or 1965 and I’ve had it ever since. Any idea what kind of guitar this is? Ever seen anything like it? Does it have any value except as a keep sake for me?

A friend of mine has this model of guitar that his father bought sometime in the 30s, it is sunburst in colour has a sheild, not a star at the headstock. IS there anyone out there who has information about this model such as origin, year of manufacture and price etc.
Thanks very much for your help.

Does anyone out there know any history at all about martin coletti guitars.I have a model no 2776 and am wondering how it should be strung i.e. steel or nylon and was the chromed metal tailpiece originally there. It is a beautiful little guitar comparible in sound and build quality to a pre war Martin and I’m very pleased with it, but WHO,WHERE and WHEN were/was Martin Coletti.Somebody please tell me.

      Dear Terry,

Over the last 30 years or so, I have come across four Martin Coletti guitars, all of them cello or "f" hole types and all to the same design. Each and every time I have tried one, I have been struck by both its tone and potential. About a year ago, I finally took the plunge and exchanged a Maccaferi type guitar for a Martin Coletti which clearly needed a good set-up and a refret. I’m glad I did for it is a better instrument than the Mac. Age I don’t know but would guess early 1950’s. My instrument is an acoustic cutaway, has a 16" lower bout, is 3" deep, is one and three-quarter inches at the nut and has three parallel, diagonal white plastic (?) stripes at the fifth, seventh and twelfth frets.

As for origin, those in the know suggest that, despite the name, these are not Italian made instruments but were manufactured in eastern Europe …. East Germany, Czechoslovakia or, possibly, Munich

Hope these notes may be of interest,

      Regards,

      Mike Wilson

          Hi

I have a Martin Coletti guitar which I bought from a friend for £5 in the sixties. He was given it by his dead uncle’s wife when we started a skiffle group in the 50’s. The uncle was the guitar player in the orchestra on the Queen Mary on the New York run.
It has a round sound hole and unusually for the time, a curved fret board. It got a bit tatty & unfortunately I left it with a well known expert restorer in the ’70’s at a guitar shop in Newcastle. The shop was sold & I went back for the guitar to find it still in bits with the tortoiseshell pick guard in 3 bits & fag burns in it!! My son is currently considering having it restored. Some of the original purfling was also damaged – but the thing still has a super sound & action. I spoke to Ivor Mairantz when I originally decided to restore it & he seemed to know a lot about the Martin Coletti name. Some were built by craftsmen working independantly in Hungary & places like that, but there was a factory somewhere which eventually in the late ’50’s started to knock out £5 classical style klunkers for Woolworth’s, under the name of Coletti. – Don’t know any more. Do you still want pictures? If you have any info I’d be glad to hear it. It’s a lovely little guitar & sounds great. E-mail me with any info & if you want pics.
          Cheers
          Kevin Bond

Hello, I also have a Coletti guitar with only 4 strings. Model G62. Is it a type of Ukulele? Any help appreciated.

      Russ

      Hey,
I also have a Martin Coletti guitar. The model number is G60 and it is signed by the maker. I bought it for a tenner off a chap who obviously didn’t value it’s charms.
It has a mother of pearl star inlay on the headstock and little m.o.p flowers on the spotted frets. What surprises me is that the neck is a good 2 frets longer than most spanish guitars, which made me suspect that it may be steel strung – however, there is no truss rod so I haven’t risked this.
The label reads: "Martin Coletti-American Model Guitars(foreign)"

Any more info would be greatly appreciated.

I am in a similar boat to yourself, having come into posession of lovely little Martin-like guitar clearly at least sixty years old, bearing a shield on the headstock with the legent Martin Coletti, but all it has on the label inside is ‘American Model’. Your message is the first reference I have come across to this make in four years of searching, so I can’t help you yet, but if I find out anything I’ll let you know. Please do likewise!

Had a Martin Coletti archtop orange sunburst cutaway a distinctive white floating wooden bridge white block position markers on rosewood board .bought at Heaps music shop Blackpool late 50/early60’s.fitted a pickup and used it in beat groups in the North west. Have a photo somewhere My feeling is that it was made in Italy & I bought it new for approx 50 guineas.Eventually went to a chap called John Fyffe who had some success in a group called the’Settlers’. My main group was the ‘Trespassers & we did ok once appearing with the’Beatles’ , but thats another story!

I have an Alpha A69(or g?)05(or s?)acoustic guitar which I bought new around 1980. I was told that it was one of around 1000 imported from Holland, made, I was told, at the Vega factory. I too recently acquired a Suzuki W-150 six string. Not a WT-150. It has a beautiful action and sounds awesome. The neck, housing an adjustable truss rod is as straight as an arrow and fits my hand like a glove. There are perloid inlays across the middle base and rear of the guitar. It has a maple top with binding, rosewood fretboard with dot inlays and the headstock carries the Suzuki & Co. Est. 1951 logo in gold lettering. The label inside has Kiso Suzuki Violin Company printed on it.
