  1. Yamaha Model 20 Classical
    Brett

I’ve bought an old Yamaha "Dynamic Guitar Model 20". It looks at though it’s from the late 1960s or 1970s (Yamaha started making guitars in 1966 apparently). Inside it says it was made by the Nippon Gakki company (Yamaha). It doesn’t have the usual Yamaha logo on the headstock, but does have "Yamaha Dynamic Guitar" and "9202" there. Although a little bit scruffy, it looks good and plays very well (solid spruce top etc). When were they made? How much is it worth?

Brett, I tried to e-mail you but I got a returned mail. I still dont know when this guitar was made but it sure looks like the 60’s. If anyone knows a search engine for Nippon Gakki serial #’s please let me know.

I too bought an old model 20 yamaha.
At a yard sale in Los Angeles I saw this old guitar and I knew it was old. I asked the lady how much and she said it belonged to her son and he was asking $250. At first I thought 2 hundred and fifty dollars and it may be worth it.
I took a chance and handed her a five dollar bill. She said "Let me get your change" when I said, "Thats ok, you keep the change" So the guitar has always been the Keep the Change guitar. It plays great and has a wonderful sound.
When people come to my house they pick up this guitar more than any of my others. I bought it in 1987 and still play it everyday. I have searched for info on it all these years and this is the first time I found anyone who had one.

I too am interested in finding more information about this guitar company. I do know that it is a Korean Company. I found a Sebring Hallow body electric. [ #8120678 ] Which has the look of a late 70’s early 80’s Guitar. While not constructed of high end materials or mechs., it has a good tone for jazz, bluegrass or light blues.

I’ve got an acoustic Sebring, it’s called "the Windrose" model# WR-28AS. It’s got a synthetic back with a built in pickup. I have searched and searched and found nothing about this guitar. I paid $200something for it. I wouldn’t sell it even if it was worth a grand. I sure wish there was more info about this thing though. But for me it is perfect: awesome sound, feel and look. Sorry I don’t have any extra info But at least your not alone in searching for info. Not a cheesy guitar to say the least.

        Axebender

Hi, I also have The Windrose, it is the same as yours except for the model number. Mine is WR-28BB.
I haven’t been able to find any info on it either but your right about is sounding great. I play blues and blues rock and I can tell you after comparing it to a Taylor my friend has….no diff. Growls better than the Taylor.
I got mine from a dude in New York and he said he bought it there in a small guitar shop in the 70’s, I know that they don’t make them anymore so we both have a collectors item. Hang on to it and keep strumming.

      1. sebring 335 copy
        joseph shepherd

made in Korea 9030200 black with off-white trim and chrome hardware.Great little guitar .Much lighter on the shoulder than the Gibson .Rescued from under the bench of a stained glass artist getting spattered with solder. It stays in tune and is as true as the day is long. A few of my colleagues who are professional guitarists have wanted to relieve me of her [I’m really a vacalist] and they agree with me she is a little gem, easy action nice neck and sits just right.Sure shes had a life but she came out singing.

        Anonymous

V.M.I. Industries guitar and brand used on Korean hard body (1980-1990) after purchased from small hand made custom jazz arch top guitars. The Sebring had a “nickname” in 1960’s of the “See me Bring it” guitar. A zillionaire purchased the logo and fired all the craftsmen to flood the market with inexpensive guitars; still, the old imports Sebring’s are better then 90% of todays market if in good shape. Internet is all over the boards on guitars, if the experts don’t know they always blame the Asians. Best thing about them is they are “real” wood and metal, not sawdust resign and plastic. Seen a clarinet, flute or saxophone lately? OMG we are a plastic band.

      3. Sebring copy of L5
        Anonymous

Being older then most people here the Sebring was a custom 1960’s guitar. Looked like the L5 Gibson jazz model arch top F hole. They also made special order solid body guitars. Most their guitars were pre ordered then hand built. Not a Korean factory or Japan copy and more special ordered by jazz artists. German I think?

        redStorm

i have one that is about 4″ thick, long neck, block inlays, black, and used it verse the L5 gibson
and it sounds good. not thin, but very medium bodied to compart the thick, woody & bright tone
of the L5. its not have the sensitivity of the ES175 but it can easily hold it weight verse the ES175.
i paid $300 for mine. that was 20 years ago. they are worth collecting for play ability!

    3. Re: Are Marlin Guitars good???
      Brett

Some people think they are. But hey, it’s only a guitar, and they’re useless unless you can play. So buy a cheap guitar and get some lessons instead. In 10 years you’ll be ready for a Maton or Takamine – maybe.

      1. Re: Are Marlin Guitars good???
        Len

They continue to live of their rep but few of the Martins currently being manufactured have a nice balanced acoustic sound, imho. And some of the peculiar models the factory is churning out these days must have old CFM spinning in his grave. For a better sounding instrument made with better materials look to Larrive or Tacoma, both of whom use all solid woods and don’t compromise construction on their less expensive models.

    1. Re: EKO Bass guitar
      Brian Garfield

      New Eko owner;

Depending on the condition of the wood, front and back, would depend on how much you would want to spend to refurbish the bass. I used to own a 1964 Eko violin bass, and it was the most beautiful maple wood that was in perfect condition. The main problem with old Eko’s is their problem of having their necks twist. It isn’t always a fixable problem, but sometimes they still play alright. If not, and you can’t straiten the neck, then I would not put a lot of money into refurbishing it. Good luck.

        1. Re: Alex-Axe Guitar Info?
          Rick

Check it out and play it. What it is worth is how much you love it (or not). Some of the top end Alex Axes were unequaled in craftsmanship. They failed however to catch the popularity train and quickly dissapeared from the landscape. You would find one occaisionally in Jimmy’s or some such used guitar rack selling at ridicullously low prices (thinks me). I picked up a ‘Les Paul’ Cheiftain back in the early eightees and I prize it above all my other axes. As for the market prices I have not seen anything selling. They are hens teeth and usually prized by the lucky owner as an Ford Edsel would be.

      Dave

RE: "I have a six6 string starforce bass guitar.I want information on the manufacturers, and details about the actual bass guitar itself.I will also like to get an E-mail address or a webbsite for the manufacturers."

(Starforce) Instruments previously produced in Korea. Initially exported by Tropical Music of Miami, Florida prior to their purchase of the Dean company.

The Starforce company was started in 1988. These medium quality solid body guitars feature designs based on the original Stratocaster, as well as the superstrat. With the introduction of models such as the 8007 with its more original body design, and several bass guitar models, Starforce seeks to expand its market niche, but apparantly isn´t producing any guitars at this moment, (Source: Tony Bacon, The Ultimate Guitar Book ).

I own a red 4-string Starforce Bass guitar. It has star inlays on the neck. I bought it for that reason. I figured no guitar designer would bother with the expense of inlays unless they really liked the design quality of the instrument. For $125, I fell I got a great deal. The neck is dead-on straight, the action is very comfortable, and the electronics are smooth after all these years. My only complaint is that it only has one pick-up which was put in the bridge position. Regardless, a very nice bass sound is easy to get. Cheers… Dave

      Doug

I have one of these too. It’s red w/ cream binding. As you already know these things are heavy, so I put strap locks on it.

In addition, mine came with an extra toggle switch (only two positions) in the area of the volume and tone knobs. I think it’s a pre-amp. All I know is when it’s on the geetar can get real loud, and it really sucks the juice out of a 9 volt battery.

The only way of dating mine was, on the back of the tuning pegs it says made in W. Germany. So all I can figure is, it was made before 1989.

They were produced by the Matsumoku company (chinese or japanese) they made lots of pawn shop guitars. They currently make Aria guitars, if i’m not mistaken.

All I know is everyone who has played a LP likes mine better than theirs.

: Hi, I, too, have a Vantage Les Paul copy, yes, it’s very heavy, but it’s my favorite guitar. I love it, it has two humbucker style pickups, four dials, and a three-way switch. I’m getting ready to have the electrical components and humbuckers replaced, because, although when I bought it from a pawn shop about a decade ago it was already beat up I can’t bear to lose the guitar. It has an awesome deep jazzy sound. Great for hard rock and blues which is what we play deep down south.

I also have a Vantage, the 718GDT model. It’s not a Les Paul copy, though. It is a funky looking guitar, not too expensive, I think about $300. Bought it six years ago in the Netherlands. It’s tuning needs precision, and it’s easily detuned, especially when using the tremelo. But it sure does play great. I just can’t find it anywhere on the internet. Brett

Wow! So many Vantage LPs out there. I bought mine in 1983 in Australia. I paid about AUD$350 (US$250 at the time), I think. It is a "limited edition" with a nice piece of timber on the deck. As the other guys said; it’s a heavy guitar. I set the action high and use it for slide. The little rocker switch is to connect the coils in the humbuckers either "in" or "out" of phase (full vs sharp sound). Cheers.

      Hi all,

I also have one of these guitar. But mine is a lefty. I bought it new in 1981 in Montreal. If I remember well, I paid $350 back then. Haven’t played for more then 14 years but I just can’t let it go. I take it out from the old case from time to time and the feel is still great… Heavy (but it is a Les Paul copy right?), and stay in tune pretty well.

There are two double pick-ups, one switch for rythm and treble, and another switch on the potentiometer side that was for phase or something like that (I can’t remember on this one). Hope this can help.

      1. Vantage Les Paul Copy
        mwf511

I have a Tobacco Sunburst, bought new in ’81, Gotoh tuners and 1 switch to split coils. As soon as I bought it I started modding it. Put a DiMarzio Dual Sound in the neck of all places, brass nut, long travel brass bridge. When I re-wired, I put splitters on each p-u, and an out of phase switch. It can imitate many guitars. Like you guys have said, heavyyy. But it is my absolute fave! Bought and sold many, still have this one!

      2. Vantage Les Paul
        Mojolightnin

Around 1974, my parents bought me a cherry sunburst Vantage Les Paul for Christmas. It was used, purchased from Chuck Levin’s Washington Music in Wheaton, MD. So, it is an early 70’s model. They also gave me a small Peavey amp. Time to rock.
It has 2 cream humbuckers, a coil tap switch, and cream binding. Mine is not really heavy at all. 41 years later, I have had to replace a broken nut, and half of one of the pickups died. The neck pickup now sounds very weak by itself, but with the coil tap switch on, it sounds normal, I usually tapped the neck pickup anyway, to get a Fender-ish sound, so it’s really not a big deal to me. Playing mostly hard rock, metal, and some blues, I used mainly the bridge pickup.
I have always absolutely loved this guitar. It sounds great, and it obviously built like a tank. You can see through the red finish on the back and neck that they are mahagony. The tuners are good; it stays in tune very well. I changed the pick guard once, but I have since put the original one back on. I had to tighten the cord jack a couple of times, no big deal. I did put on a Scaller Straplock, but I still have the original strap buttons. It came in a really nice form fitting case.
I now have about 20 guitars, including Strats, Teles, an ESP, a Schecter, a Danaelectro, Epiphones, Ibanez, Charvel, Jackson, Taylor, Etc. I also have about 10 acoustics, and 5 basses. This guitar can hang with any of them. It has the best action of any of them.
I wouldn’t sell this guitar for any price. It is the one that got me started, and over 40 years later, it is probably the one I would grab and run with out of a burning house if I could only take one.

I have restrung it and started to use it again, I go to allot of folk clubs and it sounds fare better then the new ones they have there. I bought mine second hand, 23 years ago. It looks great, but isn’t! As another postee has said, it is very quiet which is not what is wanted from an acoustic guitar. I only bought it because I used to own ther smallest Spanish style fender acoustic, and I used to look ridiculous on stage with it as I’m quite a hefty bloke. But the sound on it was perfect, which is something that cannot be said about the Eko ( Ranger ) Six’s. Sorry, I know this is supposed to be all about how good they are, but at least one dissenter does provide balanced view points. JH

I bought a Vantage avenger in 1983 they were around for a few years around that time. It was white and I expected to get the same quality guitar as the VS695. The guitar cost at that time about $320. But I was extrememly disappointed that the intonation was terrible and due to the floating bridge it just would not stay in tune very well. So I sold it to someone pretty cheap.

        Hi Marie,

The serialnumber (most likely 6 digits) and model number are usually stamped on the end of the headstock. Ex: I have a Model 28 from 1952 which is stamped "XXXXXX 28". If you look here http://www.gitarren.se/radotips/sernr_levin.html you will find info on which year a certain serial number was produced. I have seen guitars similar to mine, and they were worth around 3-4000 SEK here in Sweden ($3-400). I won’t get rich by selling my Levin guitar, but it is a nice collectible anyway.

        Good Luck

I just bought a Bently Series 10 Flying V guitar (used) at a local music store. It’s pretty awesome for the price I paid for it ($125.00). Three way pickup switch, 1 volume knob, & 2 tone controls. Black/Burgundy sunburst type finish, 1 humbucker, & 1 single coil pickup. It has a great sound, but I can’t find any info on these guitars! Does anyone know anything about them or where I can find some information on them?

      1. I bought this cool little guitar in 1995 when I wanted a thin-line acoustic / electric. Paid $199 for it and have been using the “stuff” out of it ever since. It’s white with Black trim has an oval sound hole and you can’t hurt it. It plays well (with a little adlustment ) and sounds great. It’s been a tough, faithful old pal for a long time. I like that it’s 5150, just like me.

          Anonymous

I have the same guitar (Bently 5150) and have been playing it for over 20 years. Mine is black and turquoise. It’s easy to play, meaning my hand and fingers don’t get tired fretting the strings. None of the strings “buzz”. It’s taken a beating over the years and has required no maintenance at all. It’s a great little guitar, and sounds awesome with a new set of strings.

: I just purchased a National "Telecaster" on Ebay. I have searched the web for any info. With no luck. There is a "Made in Japan" sticker on the back of the headstock and the numbers "ft 440-2" and #8-5-1 appear on the neckplate. A National decal is on the headstock and it runs vertical. It has an "ashtray" PU cover. Any Help Is welcome. Mark

: : Mark, I have a Les Paul copy made by National, had it for 15 years. Has the same sticker on the neck plate and but mine has LP457-2 and below is the serial number 1671 The LP stands for Les Paul, 457 the style and -2 is late 1968 which is when National went out of biss. as close as I can tell anyway.

I have one of these-the plate on the back of the headstock says FT 440-2 No.23.The National label on the front is mother of pearl inlay-not a sticker!I am missing the ashtray cover however and doubt I will ever be able to find one!I actually bought one from Fender but it is too short. This is one of my favorite guitars!I know it was made in Japan but it is not advertised anywhere on the instrument.Could this be one of the first ones they made before they went “cheaper” with stickers?

HELP!!! I have an Ariel acoustic guitar purchased in 1971 in Van Nuys California at Studio City Music. If I remember correctly, I believe the gentleman there said it was an off shoot of Yahama. However, I cannot find it anywhere on the internet. Has anyone heard of Ariel guitars? If so, how can I find more about them, and maybe even what the guitar is worth? It is made in Japan, and the model number is C303. Thank you!!!!!

        DalTex

I also have an Ariel C303 acoustic that I purchased at a yard sale 10 years ago. It needed new machine heads and bridge buttons. The finish had house paint splattered on it. After a lot of work it now looks and plays like brand new. No one has ever been able to tell me anything about it except that it’s probably very early 70’s. With all of the guitar data bases it’s amazing that there is no information to be found.

: I am after a 12/6 string doubleneck any make will do. Price has to be reasonable.

In reply to Mr. Tim Kelly:

      Dear Mr. Kelly,

I have two 12/6 double necks that you may find of interest to you. The more expensive of the two is a beautiful solid body Ibanez Artist. This guitar was manufactured in 1981 or 1982. It is a beautifully grained dark walnut color. I believe it is made of solid mahogany. It has all gold appointments. Both necks are equipped with ’58er humbuckers with mini-toggles on both necks to switch out to single coils. Fret inlay markers are abalone in a rosewood board. I will do a little more research on this guitar and let you know if I can tell you a little more about it. Included is the original plush lined hard shell case. Now, I don’t know what your budget is, but I am asking $1295.00 for this gorgeous, unmarked guitar with case. If this particular guitar is of interest to you, I will certainly consider your offer.

The second 12/6 I have is more realistically priced, just as clean, and also includes the original plush lined hard shell case. The guitar is manufactured by Hondo–don’t be put off because of the brand. I believe it to be of special manufacture by Hondo and is no "el-cheapo." Pick-ups are gold plated DiMarzios, great sounding units. The other hardware on this guitar is either gold plated or solid brass (solid brass bridges as well). Sorry I cannot furnish photos, but as far as the Hondo, think vintage Danelectro double neck, off-white with the copper-burst. Again, very pretty and a great player. By the way, the Ibanez Artist is quite reminiscent of a 12/6 Gibson (although solid bodied). I am asking $595.00 for the Hondo with the OHSC, and again, am open to a reasonable offer.

I am a collector and not a dealer–these are the only 12/6s in my collection and will part with one or the other. I hope you may be interested and would definitely enjoy hearing from you. Please accept my best wishes and kindest regards.

      Yours very truly,

      John

        Hope you can help.

        Dave

Hi there. I was just surfing the net and I thought I would search for Marlin Guitars. I also have one, a copy of a Strat. I bought it incredibly cheap at a second hand store(£30) and totally rewired it, refinished it, stuck a Dillon Wittman Jack Tuner on it I also got for next to nothing in a sale, and I have to say I was quite impressed. I bought an Encore guitar when I started and I have to say, the pickups on the Marlin are far better than the Encore. Whether they are original or not I don’t know, but the middle pickup is what I believe is called ‘reversed polarity’ or something. Apparently it does the same thing as a humbucker. Unfortunately the frets are knackered and so I need to do something about it.

Anyway, I once read an advert for another Marlin guitar in a paper, and it said that it was a ‘Marlin by Hohner’. Whether this is true or not, I have no idea.

        Keep Well

I have a Marlin electric which I’m about to trade in, thankfully. I think Marlin is just another name for a very cheap copy company buying in cheap guitars and sticking their name on them. If you look at other very cheap Strat copies they are all identical, no matter what they are called!!! I’ll be glad to see the back of mine.
