I have just picked up a Marlin State of the art too. I’m interested in finding out about history. Looking at new Marlins they seem to be a budget guitar made by hohner. Mine doesn`t have a budget feel to it, I guess it must be older. I like the red ‘Marlin – fish shape’ inlay in the Fret Board. I have just restrung the guitar with Rotosound Pinks and it is sounding good. Two of the little switches need replacing.

: I’ve got a Bently electric bass guitar and would like to find out more about it. It’s a left-handed intrument with an all black body, three dials and was made in Korea. I don’t see any other info on it, ie, stock number, model number, etc.
I would like to know how old it is, is it a good bass, what is it worth? I acquired it about 10 years ago from a guitar shop in the Portland, OR area. Thanks.

I bought a Bently bass about 17 years ago. I paid $400 for it. I still have it. I need a new neck but can’t find one because everytime I search Bently Bentley shows up. I messed the neck up it wasn’t Bentlys fault.

I recently picked up a Bently 5150B from eBay. I was able to determine that the Bently guitars were made by a division of the St. Louis Music Company, and were produced in Asia primarily during the 1980’s. The website vintaxe.com has a few catalogs of Bently guitars (there is a fee for the site), and I’ve been able to determine that my 5150B was produced in 1987 and ran for about $300 when new.

=i have a bently 5106 and i did some research on it they are a martin guitar made in korea to save cost. the 5106 is made of mahogany that is what gives it such a deep rich clear and incredible sound so if you own one take care of it and keep it around

I have a Bently acoustic guitar.I got it for X-mas in 1995.It had a very clean sound to it when I got it and it still does.If you want a guitar that feels good to play,Bently in my point of view is the best.I have a few other guitars but none sound like this one.It seems to give the user a better feel for what they are playing.

Ive got a Bently Model 5146 too. Made in Korea. Havent been able to find out much about it either, other than Bently being a St. Louis Music company. I can tell you that everyone who plays it loves it, I sold a $1300 Taylor, kept the Bently, and have never looked back. Great guitar.

I have one too, and Ive been looking for info on it too. My grandpa is a real collector for good guitars and he gave this one to my bro (who gave it to me) so I have a feeling its a pretty sweet guitar (if my grandpa had it)

I’ve got a bently 5106 that was made in ’84…my dad bought it new and gave it to me when I was eight. I’ve had it ten years now, and I still love it…I’d compare it to a martin, but with more versatility. I still play mine everyday, and I’ve got fender strats, teles, and les pauls.

    8. Bently Classical
      Donze

I just bought a Bently, it has a classical head and a steel reinforced neck. It looks like a steel bridge too. I have only seen a few pictures. I’ll have it in 2 weeks though. I’ll let you know how that goes.
Any one know anything about the quality of their classical styles?

I just bought a Model 5148 for $50. A few minor marks and a scuff on the back, but not bad. Dirty as hell though but that can be dealt with. This is an acoustic-electric. I have to remove the strings in order to replace the battery and check the wiring. The guitar plays well enough. I will do a better write up on HARMONY CENTRAL later.

It is in almost mint condition. I found that using D’Addario EXP string No. .011 80/20 bronze is the best by far. Other than that I don’t know anything else about this wonderfull guitar. Thanx

      5. My Bently
        Chicago Bob from Waikiki

        : :
I had my Bently for almost 20 years. Played pro with for close to ten.

This guitar is pretty darn good. You will find it hard to replace. There are guitars that sound as good but you will be surprised at how much they will cost. I have had mine since 1988 when i won it in a card game (pot value $65). It always sounded ok and filled its purpose the emergency guitar as I always kept it in my car (3 years).

Now that i Live Hawaii I have had the occaision to play prfessionally with it and have had nothing but good comments about it.

I have had some work done on it. around 1997 it the guitar was dropped and the fretboard separated from the neck. During that repair job I had the bridge lowered and the frets filed. Now it takes a low end Martin to surpass its quality.

I use fender medium strings. As such this guitar has unbelievable low end. It will occupy all of the mid range. Its a tough slog for leads, but its perfect for the rhythm playing front man

One of the odd flukes of the Bently is that the sound hole on the body is only 2 and 3/4 inches, as such most pick ups do not fit (the are mostly 3 inches) worry not this Bently oddity actually saves you monry. I use a Radio shack clip on mic to amplify ($30) no fuss no muss no buzzing.

The bently is great little guitar that only a handful of people know about. It is worth restoring if necessary

This is a low-end dreadnaught style acoustic guitar. I also have a Yamaha FG830 which costs about $299 and is far far superior. However – I really enjoyed playing the Bentley when it was the only one I had. It take a tune and stays tuning a good while. If your intention is to practice and improve on some basic acoustic songs, riffs, etc, this is a fine guitar. If you are planning on actually making it a real pastime and devoting some real effort to it, you will probably want to upgrade. I can’t blame my old Bentley for any flaws in my playing – its plenty good to learn on.
          Enjoy!

        2. BENTLY WORTH
          String Lover

My friend collects guitars. He has a Bently 5106 from 1988. Its worth between $400 and $600. These models are no longer made and the quality is superior.

: I have a bently 5150R too and am looking for a bridge and any info i can find on it. Thanks anybody.

Drop in any standard replacement bridge… shim it to preference and play the hell out of it til’ that bridge breaks. I have a 5106 bently acoustic, and just got my bridge reglued… over 10 years, that’s the only repair that’s been done to it, and it sounds just as good as a dreadnought that would cost 10x as much. the sustain is bold, tone is rich, and can’t complain about the overall balance. everything on this thing is factory, minus the nut and bridge — which i just got OEM martin/gibson parts, and filed down to suit. The bridge i’m using now is a bit shorter than the slot, but all it’s gotta do is support the strings and hold them up for no buzz.

            Don

Hello, I too have a Bently and I too know very little about it but I will share the story I got from the guy that I bought it from, I dout that he was telling me the truth, the model # 5118(on a sticker inside the guitar)and it also has this number on the back side of the headstock, the sound hole measures exactly 4",The name Bently on the headstock is just a sticker, I would like to remove it to see if it said anything underneath it but figure I had better leave it alone,It doesn’t say where it was made on the inside sticker,
I bought it from a music store in Alburn Ala. 26 years ago, I paid him $200.00 for it, he "said" that it was made by Epiphone and it was even in a Epi hard case,(still is) rather this was just a sales pitch or not it did work and I bought it,I think now that I got took but if you are happy with what you bought I guess it don’t really matter, like the rest of you I love the guitar,I don’t want to sell it but more info on it is always welcome, thanks, Don

    12. Re: Bently guitar info please
      Charles D Cesare

I have the same question; recently seen an acoustic electric in a pawn shop for $199.oo It is a thin line like the fender "stratocoustic"; the strings are a little high off the fretboard which makes its playability in the low price range type axe. I have no idea about the electronics, but expect fairly cheap string balance. I was going to offer 150.oo and work on the string height to have a toss in the back seat acoustic electric. Let me know it you learn anything about the quality of the instrument company thanks

        Andrew Thompson

Bently no longer makes guitars with the name bently they changed there name to austin, Bentley guitars are very good i have a series 10 les paul copy and it sounds better than my friends 84 les paul custom. There basically a working mans guitar and the finish is way better than gibson gibson needs to learn a thing or to about finish from austin/bently but i just wanted to clear that up and give you the info i know Bently’s are very rare so if you find one be sure and get it like i did and i now have the best axe i’ve ever had. Again anyone who sees one get it because they are rare.

Yeah i love bentlys too! i have one my brother gave me but its real old and sounds horriable. he took it to his guitar teacher a few years ago and asked him how much it’d be to get fixed and he said it’d probably be cheaper just to buy a new guitar then fix that one. so im gonna get a austin vintage rock. awesome guitar!

:We have a Bently guitar also. It is a Dreadnaught Accoustic, I was told years ago that this instrument was actually produced by Martin during a time when they were having some financial difficulties and needed a less expensive way of producing thier product. They had the Bently and others produced outside of the United States at a cheaper price. They did not want to put the Martin name of them so they gave them other names like Bently. I am not sure if this is true but I have been offered large sums of money for my guitar. I was hoping to find out more about it but… Any information you may have would be great.

      1. 5106 Bently
        Corn Pop

I have a Bently 5106….love it….has a great sound…also have an Alvarez Yairi….the Yairi has a richer, fuller range sound….the Bently is a little light on the bass side….the Bently’s neck is nice and wide for my big hands…the Yairi has a narrower neck which is harder for me to play…I compare the Bently to a Martin…in fact I painted a logo similar to Martin’s on the headstock of my Bently….It says Marvin instead of Martin….I also replaced the tuners and the bridge….put a fixed bridge instead of the one that came with it that had screws to raise or lower the bridge….the Bently 5106 is a great guitar!!

      10. Bently tenor guitar (I think) info needed
        beachlover

I’ve had this Bently 4string for about 35 years. Is it a tenor guitar? The model number is faded, but I think it is: I1710. It has a “made in Korea” label on the neck. I can’t find any information about it. I’ve seen that the early models were made by the STL Guitar Company (or something like that), which is no longer in business. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

      11. bently guitar model 5106
        Anonymous Joe

I got mine from an old picker that had an extra guitar just lying around that he never played. I paid a whopping 40 dollars for it. Replaced the strings and cleaned it up a bit. Someone else in their review stated this box is a true road warrior. I totally agree. While it’s a cheap brand, these guys must have been serious in their quality control. I have much nicer guitars, but this bently has the warm rich tones that get better as the guitar ages. My pro playing friends keep begging me to sell it to them, I just can’t. Love this thing, might have been made in Korea, but was obviously made with love of music in the craftsmanship.

I do not know how to tell which model I have. I paid $125.00 delivered, from E-bay. It was well worth the price. I have some very good guitars was meant to use as a practice guitar, so as to save my valuable guitars from damage during practice, but i was pleasantly surprised. The finish is outstanding and looks like a much more expensive guitar. It sounds very good and I consider it a good practice guitar, meaning one that I use in lieu of scratching my high end guitars. Also, I would not hesitate using this to gig with. Overall, an astounding value for the price.

Black with lawsuit headstock says The Samick in pearl script. Has full binding front and back and headstock. Set neck ,rosewood board with large (fake) mother of pearl block inlays. Looks like a real Gibson. Heavy and plays great. I have NEVER seen another like it anywhere.Just looking for information on years they made an exact rip off of Gibson and what it might be worth.Ther is no s/n that I can find and Samick USA is of no help at all. I got it for $225 but have put all new hardware and pickups in it. I use it for playing out when we’re playing in a dive and don’t want to take my real Gibson there.

I am looking for info on the Tama guitars, today is the first time I’ve checked the internet for anything on them. My husband has a 3560 it’s in really good condition but we don’t know much about them. I found it on http://home.t-online.de/home/pjs.hufschlag/3560.html and that’s the only info we’ve found. Does anyone know how much or how to find out how much this guitar might be worth. He traded a cowboy hat to his uncle for it about 5 years ago, and he also didn’t know anything about it, except it was pretty. We’d be glad to get emails from anyone who knows about them.

      Kerry

I bought my Tama new in 1977, it is the top of the line "Renaisance" model with the "tree of life" inlay running down the fret board. These guitars are extremly rare and if you have a Tama, hold on to it! in years to come they will be worth a lot of money as they are already sought after. I would even put my neck out and say they could quite possably be the best one of the best guitars ever made. Players of every model and make of guitar have fallen in love with my guitar when they have played and heard it.

I have a Tama which was played professionally for about 25 years.
I bought it earlier this year after it’s previous owner died, and fell in love with it instantly.
It sounds and feels as good as(or better than) my friends’ Taylors and Martins.
Unfortunately, the neck was recently run over by a truck at an outdoor gig.
I cried like I had lost a child.

I wish Tama would start making them again with the same specs. I would surely purchase a couple.

I also have a 3558 -S. I bought it used in 1979 ( I think.) I was comparing it to a Guild at the time and loved the sound. I didn’t know much about guitars, and am happy to know that so many people love them. I looked at the Tama site when they had the museum, but never downloaded the info and am sorry to see that they no longer have it. I also have not found a guitar I like as well. What is the difference between Jacaranda and Rosewood? Is there one? Also, where did you get the price list? I have only seen one other Tama and was amazed to find this conversation about them!

I have a TAMA 3558/P which I bought new in March of 1973. I paid $300 for the guitar and the hardshell TAMA case. (The case has the TAMA Logo Printed on it)
The guitar has a solid spruce top. I’ve added a Martin thinline pickup and the sound is awesome thru a Fender acoustic amp. The luthier that I have the guitar checked each year says it’s every bit as good as any Martin and he’s an authorized Martin repair person.

I bought a Tama 3565 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada around 1977 for three or four hundred dollars. At the risk of sounding zenish, the guitar seems to have a spirit unlike any other I have owned. A solid "working" guitar from campfire to stage, it still looks great. Definitely a survivor from a transient youth! Stories to tell! A bit "tinny" on the heavy strum but perfect for my style of plucking. The neck is a dream. The action equals any thing else out there. Other more well known names have come and gone from my possession but I will never sell my Tama. It is my guitar! Strange to have this discussion. Totally Cool! Peter (Canadian Rocky Mountains).

              Anonymous

I’m considering selling my old 6 string classical guitar. It is a Tama 3550 – serial number 41131106. The bridge came off a few years back but it seems like it should be an easy repair? Does anyone have any guesses as to its value. It’s in good condition otherwise with original tuning pegs.

My mom bought this guitar a long time ago. (80s?)

              1. Tama Guitar
                Kermit Johansson

It should be an easy repair for a luthier but it is not something that you should attempt yourself. It should go back in the exact same location and it may require some lacquer treatment to seat itself visually. The lacquer is a cashew oil derivative of some kind. If is is in good condition with original case about $600 if perfect and declining based on needs for repair or nicks/scratches.
                Are you interested in selling?

                chipsotoole

                Hi Rachael,
Your Tama was made sometime around 1974-1976. 3555 Tamas of this era were mostly laminate spruce tops and laminate Rosewood back and sides. Not sure about the C..If it was an S, that would suggest the top is solid spruce..P suffix denotes plywood top.. There’s one that’s been on reverb for over a year and the owner has just placed a price drop on it down to 630 Euros. IMHO that’s still pretty high for this model as it is a no frills budget laminate from nearer the start of production. That said, Tamas were incredibly well put together by hand, and laminate or not it should still be one sweet sounding guitar and far superior to any budget guitars churned out today. Higher end models like the TG and TW solid wood series do indeed command prices 700-1200 UKP, but significantly less in the states. Do an advanced search to see what i mean. With the wind behind it you might see 350-500 UKP I reckon.

The serial # is on digit short from a complete serial number.
I think the C is most likely an incompletely stamped ZERO 0.

                  Serial # 512443(0*) stands for 1975 December, guitar 4430.

            6. Hello to you all, Yes, I
              Anonymous

              Hello to you all,

Yes, I know 13 years after the last posting but remember: People are still searching
these wonderful guitars and often do a research concerning their model.
I have to make a remark regarding the pricelist and the descriptions here and there
as not all TAMA guitars from this first batch ( The second batch are the TG and the TC
series) are equipped with a solid top.

E.g. The 3558S which I own, has a solid top but not solid sides and back. The model
3558P has a plywood top (The “P” stands for plywood) and I suppose there was
also a price difference. Regarding the laminated sides and back. The inner layer
also consists of this so called Jacaranda and it even could be possible they made this
move on these guitars for a kind of protection against warpage during transport.

As for comparison with the more expensive Martin guitars: Martin owners tend to laugh
at the evaluations of people only owing a Tama and are not in the position of buying such
a costly instrument as a Martin. I owed two Martins’ form the seventies: A D28 from
1978 and a D35 from 1979. I now still owe one: The D35. I liked the TG 120 more than
I did my Martin D28 and I didn’t need the money at the time of selling it! So indeed!
It is possible that you come across a Tama that is sounding better than a more expensive
Martin. So my advice is: Always keep your ears open and be honest to yourself.

Another interesting point is that at first my TG 120 sounded the best and was superior
to the 3558S model in a way that it has richer overtones and a real deep bass support.
On both guitars I’ve mounted a bridge plate saver: The plate mate. The results were
not the same on both guitars: The 3558S got more volume, added high frequencies and
that resulted on this guitar in a Martin-ish silky sounding high end. Moreover the bass
response now possesses those very deep bass fundamentals. So a great improvement
on its’ sound as a whole. The effects on my TG 120 with exactly the same plate mate
were much lesser improving. The high frequencies are in fact even a bit too much
but the volume improved as well. Strangely enough the bass response didn’t improve.
But I think that everybody involved in making his or her guitar sound better, should
give the plate mate a try!

              All the best,
              Noud (GreatGuitars)

I have a tama 3560 6 string that I have had in storage for many years and now my son wants it. It needs the bridge repaired. Just wondering value of this guitar and if it is worth repairing?

              1. Bridge repair TAMA 3560 worthwhile ? YES
                Gemberbier

The value of a well repaired TAMA 3560 is higher than the cost of a bridge repair, so: YES, it’s worthwhile if your luthier is honest and doesn’t rip you off. If he asks €40-60 per hour, it’s reasonable. It shouldn’t take longer than 2½ hour, so €100-150.

Got a beautiful Tama guitar 3561- I found these TG.160 in a bad condision. Take a lock at: http:gitarmaker.blogspot.no/2012/11/hard-medfart.html Got a lot of acoustic gitars, but Tama is the best.

I have my hand on an older acoustic with the brand "Global" on the head stock. There’s no identifying sticker on the inside, but the number 506 is stamped on the back of the head.
Any about the brand? Should I get this thing fixed up or pitch it? Is it worth saving? Any ideas?

    1. Re: Anyone heard of Global guitars?
      Larry Hicks

I bought my Global, the acoustic one with the hummingbirds, from Speigal in the mid to late 1970’s. It is a 12 string and I made the mistake of leaving tension on it for too long and ended up pulling the neck away just a tiny bit. Removed 6 of the strings, secured the neck and it is still one of the best sounding guitars I own.

I’ve got a Global as well…but it’s more of a Les Paul style. Dual Humbuckers, and one of the heaviest guitars I’ve every played. But the sound is amazing, and it plays like a dream, apart from the fret board needing to be filed. I’m continuing my search to find out about these guitars. (I’m not sure if it’s been settled on here yet…too lazy to read it. :S 🙂 ) I will post if I find out anything.

OkAY,this may have come a little late, but here we go. I’ve just purchased a "Global" guitar from a pawn shop and it is by far the greatest guitar I have played on up to this point. The only guitars passing it up are Gibsons, Epiphones, and Washburns. I love the body shape which is replicate after an Gibson/Epiphone "ej200" and has what I consider great sound. Mine is a Jumbo acoustic from around 1977.

      Dan

I’ve got a Global Bass Guitar I bought in 1980 from the Montgomery Ward chain of department stores. From what I’ve learned about them over the years, the Global brand is an clearinghouse name for several different manufacturers of cheaper guitars, and they generally sold as the house brand names for discount retail stores (like Montgomery Ward, or Wal-Mart, or whatever) It’s not really the type of axe you’d like to take on stage with you, but then again, it was extremely cheap to buy. Don’t know if you’re still searching for info. on Global guitars or not. I’m searching, and not having much luck.
I picked up an electric guitar at a garage sale, and the only I.D. on it is the word Global. Apparantly there was a sticker on the back at one time, most of which is gone, but it looks like whatever was on there ends with 50. We’re thinking about putting some money into fixing it up a little, but not sure if it’s worth it. Any help we can get would be great!

The Global guitar is mostly a generic brand worth nothing and was sold to those beginning guitarists. They were like a "starter-offer". It is two tone sunburst. There is no information on this guitar about the date and so forth. It play quite well. My guess is that it is a 70’s Japaneese guitar.

You’ll never believe this, but I just purchased a Global SG bass. I paid $250 for it, but that was because it had been refretted, the nut and the tuning machines were replaced, and the action and intonation was adjusted magnificently. The thing looks like it’s been through hell, and it certainly doesn’t sound great, but for my style of music, it’s absolutely perfect. Well, it beats the hell out of a Samick P-Bass copy I’ve been playing, that’s for sure. In other words, find yourself someone who just absolutely loves "vintage" 70s busted up crap that barely works… like me. But, I do already have one, so… notice; someone LIKE me as opposed to ME. Uh, hope this helps…

I own a Global Made Guitar too. It was given to me by my German Landlord and has a humingbird pick guard on it. When I first received the guitar it had steel strings on it and was said to have been owned by an officer in the military. I have since improved on it, put nylong strings because I believe it to be a folk or parlor guitar. This has not only improved the sound but allowed it to remain in turn. I would say that judging by the wording on the inside of the guitar it is either an Italian, Spanish, Portuguese made guitar. I am still trying to find the company so that I can see what they have.

Don’t know where this thing came from but it looks rather vintage it has a marking tag on the back 0402N. Bought it for my daughter at a pawn shop she fell in love with it. Reminds me of the 60’s design with the hummingbirds and roses on it.

i have a galveston resonator that i just recieved from online auction. i have been playing it exactly two days. this is my first resonator but i have many other guitars.
this axe is a little rough in terms of the finish but appears to be very solid. it has a fairly high action for slide playing and a very nice clear sound. so far i am very happy. it was modestly priced on auction and i am sure i got my money’s worth. i don’t know much about the company or there guitars beyond this. i would also appreciate any more info anyone might have.

Galveston is 1 of the many brands that are made by Samick (at least according to a rep from a well respected music shop) They make the Epi’s, Squire, Washburn, blah blah blah. I’ve had 2 Galvestons, 1 resonator that literally had parts fall off when I took it out of the box (long gone) and a set-neck LP copy that had such resonance and tone I kept it in spite of the screwed up wiring. I gave $109.00 shipped. Beats $700.00 for the same guitar, from the same manufacturer but with the Epiphone name. Just looked at a resonator by Galveston at a music store solid as a rock and comparable to a Fender they had. Maybe the assembly instructions at their Chinese/Korean/Indonesian plants are written in english or something but if you can wire switches etc. and change pups (factory set-up sucks too) then you can havea pretty nice guitar for a fraction, unless you’re into names on the headstock. Karera is another Samick clone I’m told, but has a little better quality control.

I have a Galveston "Brother of the Dobro" (non-resonator) hollow body chrome electric guitar. The body is etched with a lovely island scene. It has gold hardware, two covered humbuckers, mahogeny neck/rosewood fretboard, and more mother of pearl (on neck and headstock) than I thought possible. The action was perfect when I received it (off e-bay). The sound was beautiful both plugged and unplugged. It played like a dream. That’s the good stuff – here is the bad. There was a screw but no strap button on the bottom (none on the shoulder or neck). EVERY SINGLE SCREW on the entire guitar was loose. The pick-up switch was mounted backwards, and the holes were too big for its screws, so I turned it around and got some lock washers for it. The volume and tone knobs kept falling off, until out of frustration I crazy glued them on. And (my personal favorite), the weld under the bridge broke three weeks after I got it and the bridge collapsed! My hands have spent more time inside this thing than playing it.
In short – I think it is (or at least could be) a very nice guitar that was not put together well at all.

a friend brought over and left a galveston electric guitar that has a basic singlecut(les paul) profile. the neck is shite as hell with a big ass bow around the 5th fret that could not be removed turning the truss rod…only really cool thing about this piece of s**t is the body is see through

      Lloyd Richey

I was recently given a Conqueror acoustic guitar by a man who had no use for it. He said it is very old. It is an EXACT replica of a 1960’s Gibson Hummingbird. Exact. Except for where it says Gibson on the headstock is has a metal Conqueror emblem bolted to it. The sticker in the sound hole has worn off beyond any reading. It sounds great. If you find out anything, let me know.

      1. Re: Conqueror Guitars
        Terry Walker

Hey dude, I have that exact guitar I think. The one I have is a 1972 model Conqueror Hummingbird Copy. Flat thin neck, has a real midrangey tone to it. My guitar was bought back in 72, or 73 when a friend of mines brother returned home from Vietnam. So I’m fairly sure of the guitars date. The sticker in the soundhole is in great condition, but doesn’t give any info as to it’s date or anything. If you look up the soundhole towards where the neck enters the body, right around the neck adjustment, their should be a serial number, and I was told that the last two numbers represented the date. My hummingbird copy is in great condition, although the pickguard is pretty worn. I’ve been searching for years on info about this guitar. It’s headstock is almost identical to Gibsons model. I sent an email and pic to the Gibson Company, and they just said lot’s of japanese, and foreign guitar makers all copied the hummingbird once it became a popular guitar for Gibson, and they didn’t think it was very collectable or anything. But of course would they have actually told me if it was? Doubt it! But anyway, nice to hear from other Conqueror players. I just stumbled across this site by accident. Thanks to whoever started this board..Good Luck

I have a Conqueror Guitar bought in the 70’s which sold in Boston under the name of Sonora. The label said it was made specially for the Boston Music Company, , but under the label was the Conquerer label saying made in Japan, and a serial number, model number. I personally bought this guitar for my father (perhaps when I didn’t know better) but now 30 years later, this guitar sounds wonderful, plays wonderful, and the workmenship is excellent. I’d not part with it.

I too have a Conqueror however this is undersized which was great when I was a young child in the late 60’s. I too have wondered what to sell it for because its justs too small. I should mention, a professional musician purchased the guitar so I know it was purchased for the quality not the brand name. : : : Does anyone know if Conqueror guitars are any good? I just bought one at a garage sale. It needed keys and strings. It plays wonderfully with a rich deep sound. The neck was completely straight and the finish was in good condition. Just a few nicks on the back. The front looks great! I don’t know how much they orginally sold for but it would be interesting.

I have a Conqueror guitar too! Bought around 1975-76. Model PN-5. Made in Japan. I have not played it in 20 years. After I left for college the younger kids must have had a good time with it..(There are a few nicks on the edges) but is still in excellent shape. It’s a beautiful guitar. It needs new strings of course.
I was thinking of selling it but have no clue as to what a fare price is. Any ideas? Thanks, Sally

: Hi I own a Grimshaw GS33 solid electric guitar. Can anyone please give any informationon this maker.thank you Eric Phillips

I also own one, deep red like an SG,in fact I reckon it was modelled on an SG/LP type guitar. Ive had it since 1972 bought in Lewisham London . My pal also bought a Grimshaw (a GS 3??) this was a different colour (white ?) and had single coil type pickups making it sound (and feedback !) like a Telecaster. The Grimshaw company was a well respected small buisness based in London until at least the 70’s but you never see them around now, so I reckon they could be worth a bit – to a collector. But the trouble with mine (and my pal’s ) was the wood for the necks warp and really need a new neck or some work done on them. But the sound when I purchased it thro a Marshall stack in the 70’s was pure Gibson – I was going to buy a used SG standard but this was much cheaper (£125 at the time). But with the neck problems I wish I got that SG.

: I have two Lyle Guitars. The 12 string I play the most. model 714. I have had both of them for over 30 years and I would not part with them. The only other Lyle guitars I have seen have been electic. I still play at coffee house arround Minneapolis.

Yes I have a lyle 12 string that a friend gave me that someone kicked the back in. I decided to make it a project to see if I could repair the back and to my surprise I did. It really looks sharp, the problem is Im missing the metal part that the strings hook into. I would like to see what piece looks like so I have something to go by when I try to make a new one. Or do you know where I might call to get one. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  17. Lyle Hollow Body Guitar
    Bill Knittle

I’m looking at buying a Lyle ES-335 type electric from the 60"s. I’ve been looking for a semi-hollow for a while, and this one’s pretty cheap, but I don’t know anything about the company, the guitar. Are they any good, worth the money, what should I be wary of? I’m not crazy about buying on line, this one was on Harmony Central. Any thoughts?

  18. Any info?
    Sarah

Hi, I have a second-hand Marlin Baracuda Slammer, in fire-bird, and I was wondering if anyone could give me any information on them? I gather they’re no Fender-quality guitar, but is there an official site for them anywhere? I only paid £100 (about $200 US I believe) for the guitar and amp, so I assume they’re not worth much? I’m not thinking of selling it, but I’d like to know an approx. value for insurance purposes.

    Thanks in advance!

          Héctor

Hi, I write from Venezuela and I have a starforce guitar. Its totally black, 3 pick ups and Floyd Rose tremolo. My grandmather gave me. It sounds very nice. Only I Know that Its made in Korea, But its distributed only in U.S.A by Starforce Miami Fl. I Like my starforce guitar because it sounds as a Fender Stratocaster. Excuse but my english is not very good. Regards.

            T. Star

I write from Switzerland and I have a starforce guitar too. I bought it from a cousin, whose father has many special and expensive guitars. Mine is really cool, but it sounds a bit weard. It has a flying thing(I don’t even know how to explain in german)at the end of the strings, right after the three pick ups, I mean, where all the electronic stuff is, right above it, where the strings go into the guitar, that thing isn’t fixed on the guitar. If you put simply your hand on it you can push up the sound up to two tunes. I know its hard to understand, but actually, all I want to know is: Are all starforces made in Korea? How can I find out where mine was made? Well, so long, star

      1. I have one, since 1991
        Javier

        Hi all!

I have a black Starforce since 1991. i bought it brand new in Spain. They were made in Korea, a small golden sticker said so in the back of the neck. The guitar has been played since, and I know I’ll never sell it.

        The only problems I’ve had:
        1) The bridge cracked! I used the whammy bar quite a lot, ala Steve Vai 🙂 But a luthier in Madrid got a replacement and now I care for it more than before.
        2) The volume pot went loose and now I can turn it 360º if I push too hard. The cool thing is that I can go from 0 to 10 and vice versa pretty fast! 🙂
        3) One of the tuners is starting to fail. Since the guitar has micro-tuning floyd rose and locking system the tuners are not much used, except for when replacing broken strings.

I’ve read that many people have upgraded the hardware resulting in a very decent guitar.

All I can say is that it was well built, since it has been played almost everyday, has traveled a lot with me and never went loose or needed for readjustments. I love it 🙂

        Dan

From what i understand Starforce guitars was a brand made by “tropical music” out of miami FL in the late 80’s to 90’s i understand they do not make guitars anymore but i herd dean &co. bought them so maybe under a different name but that STARFORCE was marketed in south america never in the US,
they don’t seem to be highly sought after but jelously guarded and prized by their owners

i have a cherrywood finish 800 single “box”pickup no guard and not one ever afixed same thing i’m told in US it was never marketed here but “tropical music” in miami FL had it made for export to south america i think they said 88-95 not sure but thats the ball park, and i hear of them all over aus, UK ,lots in south america and a couple here in the states

      4. Starforce 8000 series
        Anonymous

I bought one in 1989 second hand from a guitar store in Glasgow
Still have it today. The original trem died and with a bit of expert surgery put a firstgrade TRS floyd rose which made a huge improvement.original pickups also got swapped for Mr. Duncans finest ! Awesome guitar. I would not sell it.

: grandfathers stella guitar ,have no idea where to find out when it was made and how much is it worth?Thank u

      1. Re: STELLA guitar
        Hank

Stella was a low-end guitar made by Harmony. My first guitar was a red Stella 6-string I bought in about 1970 for $35 new.
It was ok as a beginner guitar, not real easy to play but ok since I only play country ‘rhythm’ anyhow.
Probably not worth much money but sentimental value is somethinmg else. Play it and enjoy.

I’d seen these advertised new for anywhere up to $625. I found a new one for $420 from BarbarasGuitars and bought it and I’m very happy with it. I played it some played as a bottleneck slide and fingerstyle and it worked well that way, but I bought it to use as a bluegrass "dobro" and it works really well for that. I love the thing. If you can get one cheaper, I say go for it.

Bellini guitars were truly endearing old boxwood guitars made for a.mass market in good old SA in the 50s, 60s,70s & (possibly) the early 80s.
Every old joller had one or knew a maat who did & some truly amazing times were had on the beach with some Tassies, OBs or even DeePees & a battered old Bellini with Black Diamond strings…

Hi.as a former Durbanite now living in switzerland,I remember the Bellini very well.yes,it was the poor man’s guitar costing like 10 rand in the 70’s,but we learned to play on these guitars.our people were from zululand, and all zululand used these guitars.the Zulu’s especially loved them.they were ideal for zulu guitar playing.the guys placed 2 coins under the bridge to lower the string action, and they used a piece of wood as a clave.you should have heard traditional zulu music played on these guitars in the 70’s! so this brings back lots of beautiful memories for me!

  24. Vantage Guitar Lovers, I Have a Problem!!

Hi everyone, I came accross a mysterious and cherished Vantage guitar. However, when I got the guitar the wiring was not up to par, and being the dope I am, I am now trying to re-wire it. The problem is I can’t find a schematic for it anywhere, and as we all know, the website isn’t very helpful. I have a two humbucker, one tone, one volume, three-way selector, and a two-way mini-toggle switch. If someone could please email me a diagram or simple instructions, that would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have an opportunity to purchase an Austin Hatchet and actually came here to see if there was information on them. It has an older, more Victorian label than another I have seen and a more blocky body. It looks to be in great shape and I estimate it to be about 40 years old.

        Lance Stevens

I have an AUSTIN HATCHET mini guitar. I need any information about it I can get. I purchased the guitar several years ago from a local pawn shop. It was in "brand new" condition with the original soft zipperd case and all the orig. paperwork, cord etc. The guitar is a neck-thru design with light wood stripes and what looks like a mahogany body. satin finish and "gibson V" style head stock, two humbuckers (cream) and gold hardware it looks to have a coil spliter or somthing. because it has a couple of mini toggles. I cant figure it out. I dont think the electronics work properly even though the guitar seemed new old stock. It’s a well made guitar and the perfect travel elect. much smaller than modern mini’s, I can email photos to someone who might be able to help. Since I stumbled onto it I ahve tried in vain to locate another, as of now it’s the only one I have ever seen.

        The Rock

Hi, I can offer some info about Conrad guitars. I played a Conrad 12 string (Gibson ES335 style) when I was in a rock group back in 1968. It was a wonderful guitar, well built, easy to play, sounded incredible and unfortunately I sold it when our group broke up. In 1997 I decided to take up guitar again and have been looking for one eversince. I found one yesterday and learned that they were made by Ibanez and marketed under the name of Conrad,Greco and Orlando because it was thought that the Ibanez name was too strange for the American market. Now that I have my beloved Conrad to play, I have decided to find out all I can about Conrad guitars and their lineage. I will investigate as much as possible but any help anyone has to offer would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached by E-mail at [email protected] . I will update this site when I have verifyable material or by request thru my E-mail.

        1. Re: Please tell me about my guitar
          The Rock

Back again, but I have to say I was missled and passed on some incorrect info on Conrad guitars. They were never made by Ibanez, they were in fact made by Shiro Arai Co. in Japan. They produced many brand names such as Lyle, Aria, and Univox. This company was even associated with the production of some Japanese Epiphone and Japanese Washburn guitars, so it stands to reason that there was some sort of quality associated with the manufacturer. My experience with Conrad guitars seems to bear this out. I currently own a Seagull, an Ovation, and a Fender and I believe my Conrad is as good as any of them and certianly far better than the Peavy Raptor I once owned. I imagine there were poor examples of Conrad guitars around, this is borne by some of the articles I have read, but the good reviews far outweigh the bad, so I would not be concerned about quality. Just keep making music and enjoy.

How long is a piece of string? DEFINATELY get a guitar-playing friend to help. Often a second-hand guitar is good value compared with cheap new ones, but get an expert to check the neck, frets, etc. If you start with a fairly basic model, you can learn to play and learn what you like and upgrade in a few years. Remember that a good player on a shit guitar sounds better that a shit player on a good guitar. So keep a few bucks in store for lessons, too.

        joe I'm from england

I have a starforce bass guitar. It has little moons on the fret board. I have had it for about ten years and it has always played well. Recently I have replaced the pickups wit emg active that has made it sound quite amazing all in all it is a great little bass. I know very little about it, I do know it was made in Korea and it has something to do with a company called Tropical music in Miami. I would love to know more about it as it has been with me for a long time now, if anyone knows anythig about it pls drop me a line.
        Tar very much Joe.

I am trying to find information on an old Electric Guitar Japanese made: Kawai 4 PU’s, two solo/rythm Control Buttons, 4 booster on/off control buttons, Tremolo Bar, 4 volume control buttons and one Bass/treble control button.I will need a picture catalog from the makers so I can Identify my model and verify it’s price. I will also like the history of Japanese made Kawai Electric Guitars.
