: I use an extensively modified 1976 hayman comet as one of my frontline guitars. I cant get on with zero frets so my comet has a squier tele neck,it also has a P90 in the neck position and a static strat bridge. The result, although sacriligeous to hayman/shergold/burns
afficionados, is a lightweight, highly playable, tone monster, a fraction of the price of an early fifties tele.
Despite the frankenstein specs, the guitar looks like a design classic. Where can I get a 10/10?

Hi, interested in your Hayman Comet mods. Any pictures or specs? I have a Hayman Comet and I want to develop a prototype hybrid etc.

Hayman was essentially a continuation/extension of Burns guitars London, which then evolved into Shergold guitars. Go to the only site available (excellent by the way) for all this info which is http://www.shergold.co.uk Hope you find what you’re looking for. Good luck

I have a Hayman 2020 semi acoustic. I’ve had it since 1971 and it is in excellent – almost mint – condition. I haven’t got a clue what it’s worth – all I know is it is a very individual guitar and one that I have been proud to own for 30 years. It is sycamore with a maple neck – a really beautiful guitar…Mark Harvey

  2. Cortez Les Paul copy ?????
    Bill

I recently bought a Cortez Les Paul copy at a garage sale for $30. It was manufactured in japan and looks exactley like a gold top. Does anyone know anything about this guitar? Is it good quality? is it worth fixing up?Is the manufacturer still in bussiness ? ect.

I’m not sure how long ago your message about the Paul copy was posted, and whether or not it’s still relevant. I’ve actually been looking for a Cortez copy to use parts for one that I already have. Even if it isn’t in your possession anymore, I’d love to see pictures of it if you have any. Thanks

  3. Dean Acoustics Guitar
    Jim

Looking for some information on the Dean Acoustics guitar. I found a shop that says the Dean Tradition One is the "high end" guitar for someone like myself that is a beginner. The guitar sounds great from the other lower cost end guitars that were demonstrated.
Knowing nothing, and being a true beginner, I asked for a good guitar to learn on and I wanted it to last andnot have to worry about it falling apart.
Any help from those who are more than a beginner would be appreciated. Buy the way the dealer said he would give me a carrying bag, book, video, humidifier, picks, tax out the door for $380.00!!!

I have the Dean Tradition — but the fancy model with all the Vine inlay on the neck. I have 20 guitars. The Dean is impressive even among top of the line Martins and Gibsons. Many play my guitars and are impressed with the Dean. Go for it!

      2. Blade 1 created by V.M.I. Sebring
        PhilSanchez

I just picked up a Blade 1 by V.M.I. Sebring (for free!) and I have read up on anything I can find about the guitar. Its got great potential for a fun player and I am re-building and refinishing the whole guitar. I believe Sebring was a knockoff guitar company located in Southern California in the early 90’s and went out of business in 94 or 96, sometime around there. V.M.I. helped distribute the guitars, while the guitars were actually made in Korea by an existing guitar manufacturer (I read somewhere that it was Hondo). I plan on preserving the guitar to the best of my ability and preserving its history, so if you know anything about the guitar or company, or if I’m incorrect on any of my details, I’d love to hear from you!

"Gherson" is an Italian manufacturer that produces guitars and basses until the middle of ’80…

: I own an old Italian Guitar. I bought it new around ’65 and have had it ever since. The only identification it has is a small logo located in the top left hand corner on the body that says "FM". The back of the neck has a small label that says "Made in Italy". Thats it. Any idea as to the origin of this old boy? Its white with a red pick guard. Very pretty. 3 pick-ups, volume and tone controls, a four position switch to select pick-ups and an on/off switch. Any idea as to its value? I’ve never seen another one like and neither has anyone else I’ve shown it to.

I bought an eko guitar (italian) 6 string acoustic with 14 frets free of the hull, like the country guitars, but otherwise like a classical with steelstrings. The sound quality is beautiful but not very loud.

I was given on the same time a broken Eko 12 string accoustic guitar. I fixed it in my own way and it is the most reliable guitar, you can imagine.

Through this experience i have found that Eko guitars have an excellent neck which basically does not bend with age. They have a nice sound, but are so reinforced that the sound is not very loud. The only argument other than possibly the volume that I have against eko guitars is that the varnish cracks. The six string had three or four long cracks on its whole front and the varnish on the 12 string that was ready for the tip looks like a broken window that hasn’t fallen out yet.

Value. about 1995 I bought the 6 string eko for $145 Australian = maybe present value $190 Australian = maybe $85 Us. The neck is the most musical part of the guitar and I think the value of the guitar for the real conoisseur rises and falls with the reliability of the neck. Anybody can make a hull and many make them well but not necks. So I think if the hull is uncracked put atleast $500 Australian = $250 Us on your guitar. If it of course sounds good and you have no problems with the bridge and other things.

But bear in mind I am only an amateur too.

          Good Luck

I just bought one today. Serial # 1055. I’m told it’s a 1962 model. It’s cream coloured and everything else sounds identical. It has two controls near the top and one at the bottom of the strings in the middle. I paid $588.00 (Canadian) at a pawn shop. Sounds great!

Wow that is a hard one. I used to play with the les Paul alot and I really enjoyed that solid feel.
I used a fender strat now and could not give a ya or na on either both great axes. That would be like comparing two very good pieces of art.

: could anyone reply to this,,,,,for disadvantages and advantages…..etc…
I saw this question and felt it was my duty as a guitarist to reply. If you buy a strat over a paul you’re an idiot!
Les Pauls have better everything: set neck for better tone and sustain, humbuckers not cheap ass singles, carved tops, stop tail pice for tune stability and the list keeps going.
The only reason to buy a strat is if your toilet’s out of order! (gotta piss someware)

      1. Re: A Gibson Les paul OR A Fender Stratocaster??
        Lord Ickenham

What you have to say is stupid, ignorant, and just downright mean. The Stratocaster and the Les Paul are both wonderful guitars, (among many others), with their own unique features.

        1. Re: A Gibson Les paul OR A Fender Stratocaster??
          alan lee bond

well said. it is virtually impossible for a Strat or a Les Paul to replace the other in its own pure sound. Especially true when playing a vintage tube amp without effects processors. Music would be the poorer if either had never been made.

        1. Re: A Gibson Les paul OR A Fender Stratocaster??
          dan

: the Gibson is a classic & a better investment(if resale becomes necessary) however, the strat is a much easier to work on and because of the bolt-on neck it allows easier neck adjustment and changes of set-up(heavier strings, etc.)
: playing style, pickups, & feel of the neck are most important
          : the strat has single-coils which are brighter, more "stinging" and (unfortunately) more prone to background noise and feedback; the les paul’s humbuckers, by contrast provide a classic clean mellow sound with greater sustain;
: ultimately the feel of the board under your fingers and the quality of the fretwork should be your guide

          1. Re: A Gibson Les paul OR A Fender Stratocaster??
            dan

to be honest both are of equal quality they both have been the industry standered so they will have equal oppsers on both sides of the coin my true suggestion is to try them both out for yourself and make your own personal choice as to wich you prefer there are alot of other guitar manufactures as well out there that produce some real sweet playing and hot sounding instruments as long as yer hardware woods and tuners are good it can be an awsome guitar no matter what the name is if yer a good guitarist er want to be perhaps shoping fer feel of the instrument is in yer best intrest if yer a collector collect both dont listen to slobs saying one over other thats oppinion an both are great collectors pieces

Gibsons have set in or glued in necks, this makes for a very exspensive service if the neck ever has to be replaced!
Also the Gibson Les Pauls are heavey compared to a Fender Strat! Fenders of course are bolt on necks and lighter ! BUT, the sound of the Paul is without equal! Except for one! Try a Paul Reed Smith bolt on!Best of both worlds!
      good luck!

Just trying to research my father inlaws martin coletti and this is all i can find.
I know he brought it between 1957 and 1960 somewhere in america, i’ve never heard of any others, hope this might give you some idea of the date, i will look into finding the ID number and post that as well.

      Pete Skinner

I’ve been looking at buying a Coletti (not marked Martin Coletti just Colletti" looks late 50’s well made with ebony fret board and line’dot MoP inlay the headstock has a loveley MoP design inlaid plus the Coletti "plastic" oval with the name engraved. It’s still in it’s original blue lined case and apart from the action lokks good – flat top small bodied with 14 frets to the body. Scratch plate looks as though it was added later! Standard bridge with straight through string attachment (no bridge pins) THe machine heads are strange as they have a ivoreen barrel over metal centre making it look a bit like a classical guitar head!

anyone any ideas, I also have checked my "blue books" etc,, and checked the net to no avail!

      Pete

        Chris Keevill

I had a Martin Coletti as a Christmas present from my parents in about 1959. It was a sunburst finish,’F’ hole archtop cello six-string guitar. As I progressed with guitar playing, I acquired better guitars and in the late 1960’s I lent it to a relative, who took it on gigs in folk clubs, and managed to LOOSE it!!!
I also have a four-string Martin Coletti which my father bought in the 1930’s. It’s a full-size guitar, finished in tobacco sunburst, the body and fretboard bound in white ivorine, with a triple-ring white rosette. The fretboard and bridge are ebony. The fretboard has mother-of-pearl ‘flower’ inlays on the 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th & 15th frets, and the word ‘Coletti’ in script mother-of-pearl inlay on the headstock. It has a tortoiseshell scratch-plate which has white binding. These instruments were popular in the 1930’s (probably because they had less strings) and were known as Tenor Guitars. They could be tuned either to the top four strings on a normal guitar or as a banjo/ukelele.
        Hope this is of interest.

          Jacek Agopsowicz

I have a Martin Coletti which I have been trying to find something out about for years. It is a small bodied flat top with a spruce table, ebony looking finger board joined at the fourteenth fret, and a shield on the headstock bearing the name. Inside is a label bearing the legend American Model. It has a very sweet tone and beautiful action. The build quality is superb.

I also have an f-hole sunburst guitar with no maker’s name, about 60 years old. The art deco mother of pearl on the headstock, and general style make me think this is another Coletti.

It is amazing how difficult it is to find out anything about these lovely guitars, whose makers also produced at least one Spanish model, and one tenor guitar that I have come across.

          Let’s keep on trying.

from the original owner. He had bought the guitar new in
1936 from a music store in Plymouth, England for £12. It has
a pine or spruce top with maple back and sides, and is
finished in French polished sunburst. Fingerboard and bridge
are ebony, and the only unusual aspects are the width of
the neck and bridge and the extreme camber of the
fingerboard. My father also owned a blonde flat top model in

Its condition could be better but with big signatur of Hans Albers , pearl inlays and Coletti in Pearl, ivory bridges, and "polished glass or diamants in the tuners

            Hey,
I have a Martin Coletti guitar also. The model number is G60 and it is also signed by the maker. I bought it for a tenner off a chap who obviously didn’t value it’s charms.
It has a mother of pearl star inlay on the headstock and little m.o.p flowers on the spotted frets. What surprises me is that the neck is a good 2 frets longer than most spanish guitars, which made me suspect that it may be steel strung – however, there is no truss rod so I shan’t try this.
The label reads: "Martin Coletti-American Model Guitars(foreign)"

Any more info would be greatly appreciated.

I live in the north of England and take my 11 year old son
to guitar lessons once a week. I’m learning with him and
decided join in on the fun and buy a guitar. His instructor
who’s been playing for about 50 years mentioned another student had a Brunswick acoustic which he thought sounded very nice for the price (a little over a £100.00). He went to the local guitar shop and tested out a few guitars that I was considering, and he like the Brunswick acoustic/electric (£179.00) the best out of the three.
The other was a Takanimi (spelling?), and a Windsor I believe. Hope that helps. Cheers, Steve

        Matt

I bought a Brunswick electro-acoustic from my shop a month ago and it is superb to play, smooth fret exchange etc etc. Looks nice, smooth machine heads, nice sound, not too spritely, and all for the unprincely sum of £195.00. I haven’t played the full acoustic version of the maple cutaway, but the one I have is nice, even the fretboard is quite narrow, but then most electro-acoustics are greater barre control. Curved back looks nice as well, and contributes to the nice sound, which isn’t too spritely but spritely enought to be deep also – go for a brunswick if you like it, but mine isn’t too good for picking – I’ve got a hohner for that! Good luck.

I’m a bit out of touch with guitar prices(20 odd years!) but I’ve been looking at a Brunswick 12 string-sorry can’t remember the model-priced at £260,does this sound a reasonable price?

      1. Brunswick guitar
        Tony T

I had a few days away in York and decided to pop into a music shop to have a quick look at the lovely guitars on sale.
There’s this young lad strumming away on a few of the well known names like Martin and a £750 epiphone which was rather nice.
They were good sounding guitars, then the shop assistant asked him to try a middle priced Brunswick and the sound that
that came out of that guitar was great, the lad couldn’t get over it.
Just goes to show you don’t have to pay loads of money for a decent guitar.

        craig180881

I got a beautiful Brunswick Dreadnought 550 sunburst acoustic yesterday for £37. It’s in excellent condition and when I looked at the value I was super pleased. Worth £300 brand new. And I promise you, astonishingly good sound. I love it.

      3. Brunswick Guitars
        PaulC

I bought two Brunswick guitars (Model:FL ??) for my teenage children back in 2002 for circa £80 each, and they are quite marvellous guitars for sound and playability. Nice tone, and superb necks with a low action, and well-finished frets. Very good value for money, and I pick up and play them all the time. Much better than far more expensive “name” guitars, which I have been disappointed to try after these.
Would recommend Brunswick guitars without hesitation to players who can’t afford to shell out hundreds – and even they should compare first…..!!

I have a Greco "Blues" Model F100 Guitar that I recieved on Oct 5 1975 it was a used guitar then. "Greco" is inlayed in mother of pearl as well as the fret markers. Like everyone else here, I have not been able to find anything much out about it. I was told at one time that it’s value would be determined by the number of rings and what color they were.
Does anyone know anything about this , these guitars? I have been allowing my son to use it. He takes care of it, but it is suffering some! It is in excellent condition.

      Eric Neuman

Hey… as far as I know… Greco guitars are hard to come by. I’m pretty sure that they’re made by some old
guy in NYC name Alex Greco. I bought pickups from him 2 months ago, and he had a vast array of guitars
with the name Greco on the headstock. I know the pickups are phenomenal. They’re hot, but retain their
tone. The store is at 165 w.48th street in New York (for those in the area). I’m not positive that he makes them,
but I’m pretty sure. The pickups say "Alex Special" on them, and they’re a hideous tan color.
I’m gonna call the store and find out anyway because I want one of the guitars….
      Adios…

I havebeen looking for info about Greco guitars for a while. I had a late 60’s or early 70’s "s" style solidbody and it was misplaced by my brother. I still hope it pops up somewhere. I read on a site that they were built by a Japanese "copycat’ company which later became Ibanez guitars. The copies were so close that lawsuits ensued and thus caused many styles to become rare as thay were taken off of the market. I now own an Ibanez Talman with HB pickups and it feels very much like the Greco but the HBs aren’t as "biting" as the single coils on the Greco.

  17. Question
    Thomas Puzzo

    To who it may concern,

I am a professional classical guitarist of 36 years. In 1995 I invented devices for all style finger-picking guitarists that my friend Laurindo Almeida examined. He stated by letter>"I praise you for inventing something so different and unique for someone who would want such a sound in their guitar". I have inspiration to get it manufactured, but my finances do not allow me to afford a patent.

Do you know of a manufacturer who may be interested in manufacturing my invention? One who would hold-off on a patent?

Your reply would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Thomas Puzzo

  25. Thomas Guitar
    Chris Walker

I have recently inherited a Thomas (italian organ manufacturer) Guitar form my late Uncle. As far as I am aware it is the only one left. It was made in approximately 1960-70 and has "made in italy" pressed on the back of the pegboard. It has built in a number of guitar effects including: E Tuner,Wah Wah,Treble/Bass Boost,Distortion and repeat. These effects all run from a 9v Battery situated in the back. The serial number is "357940." It has two humbucker pickups, and is a telecaster shape. The finish is sunburst to to black with gold trim around the edges.
If anyone can tell me anything about this I would be very grateful.
    Thankyou.
    Chris Walker,England.

Greco guitars (Fuji Gen Gakki, or Fuji stinged music co. in Japan) was a guitar manufacturer that made EXACT replicas of famous Gibsons,ie LP’s, Thunderbird, Firebird; Ricks, Hofner (German) Bass, (lots of American made expensive line guitars). They were one of the companies that were sued by Gibson and had to cease production of the American guitars. they are still in businesds and have changed their headstock design for their Greco line. They manufacture the Japanese made Epiphone guitars for Gibson. the older model replicas are SUPERB! I have purchased a LP standard replica, a 335 copy and a Thunderbird Bass copy and will buy then as I discover them. Hope this helps to answer your question. : : : Hello I would like to know about the history of the guitar brand "greco". If possible pleas send me and information about that.

            : : : :
I play greco guitars and have little official info for you, But I do know that GRECO is a Japanese guitar manufacturer that makes some reasonable copies of expensive Guitars. My Rickenbacher bass copy and my Beatle Bass copy are so similar that I can’t tell much difference at all. The Rick copy actually fooled a player one night and he offered me 750 for it. Then I showed him that it said grecoguitar on the headstock instead of Rickenbacher. The greco cost me 150 in a pawn shop. The real thing is about 1000. So, since I have very little money, greco has made it possible for us to get a good classic rock sound and look like pros instead of Peavey players on stage. I have played the real thing and I am not impressed with the difference. Good luck finding the company though. I have scoured the net looking for them.
