For more than four decades, Fender electric guitars and amplifiers have had a tremendous influence on the way the world composes, plays and listens to music. While guitarists in the early part of this century played country, folk or blues on acoustic guitars, in the 1930’s, jazz musicians experimented with amplifying traditional hollow-body guitars so they could play with other instruments at the same sound level. One problem was that the speakers and pickups tended to generate feedback when played at a high level.
In the 1940’s, a California inventor named Leo Fender had made some custom guitars and amplifiers in his radio shop. Eventually, Leo would create the world’s very first instrument amplifiers with built-in tone controls. More importantly, though, was Leo’s vision of better guitar. With his knowledge of existing technologies, he knew he could improve on contemporary amplified hollow-body instruments . . . and improve upon them, he did. In 1951, he introduced the Broadcaster, the prototype solid-body guitar that would eventually become the legendary Telecaster. The Tele, as it became affectionately known, was the first solid-body electric Spanish-style guitar ever to go into commercial production. Soon to follow the Tele were the revolutionary Precision Bass guitar in 1951, and the Stratocaster in 1954.

I have a Lead II that fits your description.

Lemme know.
Its nice to finally find some proof of the LEAD II existing other than by just telling other guitar players that I own one. I have had people tell me for the past 20 years that Fender never made a LEAD model, I have even had other guitar players dispute its authentisity while holding it in thier own hands. I bought mine barely used in 1980 for $400 the guy I bought it from said he gave about double that for it in 1979. Its a deep cherry red with a black pick gaurd and a maple neck, still all original and in mint condition. I feel its one of Fenders best guitars and has been short changed as a true collectible that not only looks great but sounds even better.
I also can vouch for it’s existance… I have one sitting here in the ohsc ready for offers.

: I also can vouch for it’s existance… I have I too have one I got In 1980. I guess you could say its not in orginal condition though,- early on it came in contact with some superglue which ruined the original finish {transparent red} so a friend of mine who painted cars painted ita sort of pinkish/purplish color that I guess only a girl or a punker could love. I also put a brass nut on it when the orginal broke.Other than that it’s stock, and I love it but its noisy and I’m trying to find a better way to shield the little bastard!Anyone have any ideas?
Put noiseless pickups in it……
i also just purchased a lead 2!!
could you tell me a little more about
this guitar?? i’m still searching and
it’s hard to find any info.
The Lead II’s were made between 1979-1982. At first only in black, but then they added colors to choose from (so if yours is a other color, it was probably made later). They were made with two single coil pick-ups, but by now many people have screwed with them and put in humbuckers or bar style pickups. There was also a Lead I and III, the bodies were the same as each other and the II, but the I had a bridge humbucker, and the III had a bridge and a neck humbucker. They really are great sounding, cheap (for a vintage Fender), and they look pretty cool. Hope I helped you out.
