Gibson

The home of Gibson electric guitars today is “Gibson USA,” built in 1974 in Nashville specifically for the production of Gibson’s Les Paul guitars. Although the entire guitar industry went through a slump in the late ’70s, the spirit of innovation remained strong at Gibson. In response to a growing demand for vintage stylings, Gibson tapped its rich history and reissued the dot-neck version of the ES-335 in 1981 and the flametop sunburst Les Paul in 1982. At the same time, two legendary guitarists joined Gibson- B.B. King in 1980 with the Lucille model and Chet Atkins in 1982 with his new concept of a solidbody acoustic guitar.

I would be willing to trade it for an Ampeg AMG-1 in mint condition or a 1968 Gibson/Epi Es-345/Riviera project, or a combination of the two.

      Hi Colin
I happen to have a 1998 Hellfire Red Gibson SG which is hardly played. I was wondering if you’re still searching?

If you are right handed..holding the guitar…take a flashlight and look in the lowest.. F-hole opening…and scan around the opening for a BLUE number on the back of the guitar…something like S 27**…that would be the serial No.

I’m a little confused? You say it is in mint condition yet the serial number is chipped off the head stock? I have a 1960 confirmed, I gigged with it for many years and it is in very nice condition for it’s age and use. I have the original case as well, beat some on the outside, but the inside is very good. I would not take less that $5,500 for the pair if that helps you. not having the serial number will hurt considerably. You would have to pull the electrics out to get an idea what year it is.

i used to have an es330td with bigsby and hardshell gibson case , bought in memphis tn around 1963, it was a late 50’s model. my guitar was lost in a fire in 1987, it was the first electric guitar that i had ever owned, bought it as a teenager for just over 100.00 used in memphis
if you have not sold your guitar or would consider selling it to me then please let me know at [email protected]. i have not been able to find one at a reasonable price as it seems that japanese collectors of gibson pay a great deal for this kind of guitar. thanks for your time Riley Fowler

I also have a ES330 TD with factory fitted Bigsby. Its approx 1962/3 very good condition. I have had a collector look at mine (Bernie Marsden) he thinks it would fetch between £2000-£3000. Has original Selmer Crocodile case. Serial no is on the back of the head. Mine has all original parts including machine heads. no mods.

I’m looking to buy basically any (fully functioning) vintage gibson solidbody guitars that have been discontinued (and pre 1990) for under $750. For example, I’d be interested in the challenger, invader, corvus, futura, marauder, melody maker (double cut in faded cherry, not D version), moderne, rd, s-1, or sonex… Please email me at [email protected] if you’ve got something I might be interested in.

      Paul

I am surprised that there were no comments or feedback. In the small town, on the Big Island of Hawaii where I live, I have heard from three people that know of the same story of refinishing guitars or Mandolins without even asking. One old Gibson mandolin belonged to a pretty well known player Bluegrass player. This upsets me much more than the poor workmanship.

      Paul

I bought my J-45 Deluxe #678603 new in May 1972. I have taken great care of it over all these years. I was pleased to hear from Gibson that the waranty was still good for the Bridge that was starting to lift. I sent it to them in Nashville, TN. When they saw it they said it could use some work on the neck as well that would not be covered. I agreed to the work which would included the neck be reset. When I got the guitar back 8 months later the first thing I notice was the complete refinish of the entire guitar. I was amazed! The origanal finish was in not good, but Excelent shape. The Second thing I notice, the action was higher which I lived with for a while then I took it it to a local Guitar shop to see if the truff rod could be adjusted which had NEVER been done before. The guy at the shop went nuts at what had been done to my guitar. He said he had never seen that bad of a reset before and he could not adjust it enough. He was realy upset that the Guitar had been refinished. Gibson had me send it back in and agreed the neck reset was a very bad job, they are resetting it now. They don’t know why it had been refinished. Not that I ever would have sold my Baby, buy anyone know how this has affected the value?

      Hi Steve
I bought a ’76 Marauder Custom (inc. hard case) off ebay a month ago for £361. It’s in good playable condition for it’s age. Obviously quite a low price, considering what you get for the money. The Custom is a prettier version of the standard model, but the sound is just the same. I used to have a regular Marauder in the early 80s.

I bought my S1 in 1979. It is a 2 piece (body & neck) solid maple and has wild action (in my case) – 3 helixcoiled pickups. I had to change the machines on it as it would not stay tuned with the originals. I find it has a blues to rock sound and can be raunchy depending on where you strum and what setting it has and how hard you strum or pick. : : : it has three clearish single-coils in it. the controls consist of one tone, one volume, a switch type (pickup selector?) that only goes down (two settings?), and a rotary type switch that has six or seven settings and looks like an oversized amp chicken-head knob??? anybody know anything about this guitar? is it a marauder or related somehow? what sort of value for these gibsons? Gaz

The S-1 was made from 1976 to 1980.
The rotary selector had 4 positions up to 1978. If you can select the bridge pickup on its own then it is probably early 1978 as later in 1978 the pickups had black covers fitted. If the selector has 4 positions then it is probably a ’76 -’78 model.

What… No… Black covers… thats an L6 you mean. The L6 deluxe has black covers. The S1, Marauder and the L6 are made in te same series. The idea being to apeal to the fender market. The L6 is the only one designed by Bill lawrence the others just have his pick ups installed. S1 has 3 single coil pickups wich can be selected to run in 4 different configurations (one being all together thats why they called it ‘humbucker and a half’). Later they added a coil tap switch to also have only the neck pickup selected. Though very versatile these guitars where never very popular except for the L6 which was used by Santana for a while.
Funily enough the S1 was actually endorsed by Ron Wood. (google)

i want to find more of them. they are listed at max $500 for pristine, orig., condition. mine was $300 (Can.!) paid three times that for my SG….lol

never had a git that i wasn’t always pissed off about the sound in some way.

this is a nice cheap fender/gibby cross.

          cheers all….rock on! M.

      matt

it has three clearish single-coils in it. the controls consist of one tone, one volume, a switch type (pickup selector?) that only goes down (two settings?), and a rotary type switch that has six or seven settings and looks like an oversized amp chicken-head knob??? anybody know anything about this guitar? is it a marauder or related somehow? what sort of value for these gibsons? (S1s, marauders) are they rare? i know they’re not expensive and are sorta low-endish but i haven’t come across one before. the six digit serial number starts with a ‘0’ so i guess 1973?
thanx for any more specific details that might be out there. M.

  15. '63 Gibson SG Jr. Value
    Tim Hagerty

I have a ’63 Ivory Finish Gibson SG Jr. in original case w/ original Tube Maestro Amp. The guitar is in Very Good condition, the alligator style case is pretty beat up. It has spent most of it’s life under my Mom’s bed since my Dad bought it in ’63. The serial # is 101906. Would anyone be able to provide me w/ a ballpark figure on what it would be worth. Thank you for your time.

  16. Les Paul 7 sound mod "The Stinger!"
    Dwight Listmayer

I just modified 2 Les Pauls with a switch that gives you 7 tones instead of just 3. Now that’s 2 more than PRS and it’s wild. It’s not on the market, but you can have one custom made by Emmett Brown at http://www.deaf-eddie.net. He provides instructions and full technical support. There’s not much else to say. These axes are amazing! Strat Man and Les Paul Hotrodder Dwight

7/24/2010 I am the original owner of a Bicentennial Reissue 1976 Gibson Thunderbird bass. I am trying to find out the value of it, as I may need to sell it. It’s the natural (mahogany?) finish, not a sunburst or colored. Very COOL! One in good condition, should run around $1,500, give or take a few hundred. Let me know, and play it low. Martin

      Hi ted,
great little gutiar – but definitely not from 1950 because these flat body version of the ES140 had been made in the second half of the fifties – yours should have a silver caped P90 Pickup – the early fifty models had a balck plastic cover and a thick body – yours therefore mght most probably be an ES140T -for thinline – check the serial number on the gibson homepage.
      have fun

      Ted

I have a vintage Gibson ES140M, it’s a 3/4 size, sunburst, Serial number 3131 5. So far I can’t get much information on it except it was made in 1950. It has the original case with a plate on it from Kesting Music in St. Paul MN. If anyone has any info I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Ted

Just starting to find out how to sell this GIBSON VINTAGE 1968 ES-335 12-STRING- It’s almost mint just a two little nicks. I dont want to give this away its is 35 years old and I need the best price I can get. I look on the web and it can fetch form $ 2,500 to $ 4,000. But obviously going about this is a pain in the ass. As you can tell I am trying to not get ripped off.thanks for your help

        : Gibson 196(7-68)? ES-335-12 W/ 6-way VeriTone & Bigsby Vibrato tailpiece was apppraised around the $18-$30k range!!!!!!

My Daddy had one of these when I was growing up in the 80’s. My grandparents gave it to him when he graduated high school in Southeast Texas. He used to play the Beatles and Elvis to us when we were little. My Dad now lives overseas…we think he sold it, leaning a slight bit into the paranoia, believing all of us to be only after his money…(we aren’t). but God does the thought of it provoke such strong happy childhood memories. I wish I could hear him play it just one more time. And for a certainty… it was beautiful.
